2002 Sentra Temperature Control Repair

  • The temperature control knob in my 2002 Nissan Sentra stopped working. The knob turned but the air coming out the vent was always hot. Much like the brakes on a bicycle, the knob controls a cable that slides within a shroud and moves a damper for the heater control. But the clip that holds the cable shroud in place broke leaving the cable unable to slide through the shroud. This resulted in the heater being stuck in the "on" position.

    Dear r0petrick - THANK YOU. This video here today cost me $4 in Gorilla Glue, but saved me an estimated $860 in repairs from the dealer.
    TH-cam was created for kind souls like yours, and I cannot thank you enough.
    Happy driving!

    Thank-you for explaining the process!!! I have a 2004 and hot air was coming out even when off and with AC on. I was unable to zip tie...so put a lot of Gorilla glue around clip. Let dry for about 4 hrs. Like magic...worked like a charm!!! Thank-you again for taking the time out of your day to film this!!!👍

    I am so grateful for your video - while my 2000 Sentra is a bit more complex, your video gave me most of the solution and saved me $$ hundreds in repair costs (used 2 zip ties to replace the broken cable stanchion, because I like redundant redundancy).A gracious Thank You!!!

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. The heater in my wife's 2002 Nissan Sentra had the same problem yesterday. I followed your directions and was able to fix it. I will say that I had one heck of a time holding the cable in the proper position to apply the epoxy.......but, 4 hours later it was fixed. If I had taken the car to the dealer and been quoted $863 as below, that would been almost all my money for Christmas presents. You saved our Christmas........Thanks........Paul

      I'm glad this worked out for you. Thanks for your comment. I had a similar bit of difficulty when I applied my epoxy, although, it set in about 15 minutes. One of the comments below suggests using a zip tie. I wish I had thought of that before making my repair. Maybe I can incorporate it into the video somehow.

    Thank you SOO much. My 2004 Sentra AC was blowing hot. Hot. And nothing but hot After attempting to recharge the AC (pressure was reading low) with no success at all, and being back at square one, I searched all the forums for an answer. Then I stumbled across this video.
    Sure enough, the plastic molding was broken and the cable 'free floating'. Two zip ties later and I have cold air again. Brilliant!

    I just fixed the controls on my daughters Sentra GXE . I tried super glue on the clip and it would not hold. I used a cable tie from Harbor freight but it was too stiff to cinch down with out breaking some thing .I ended up using hot glue on the clip and and now it holds . Daughter said the shop wanted 600+ bux to fix this so thanks a bunch!

    Thanks so much for this vid, it was a total lifesaver. It turns out the cable had the temp fixed on 100% heat since I got the car a few months ago and I had no clue what was wrong. Used a file to create a little U-shape in the hardened steel bracket to keep a zip tie in place and strong as possible. Got everything re-assembled (had to remove stereo per another video), and experienced true air temp and air conditioning for the first time ever in this car, and it's amazing!

    My heater was on all the time as well along with the fact that my air would only blow through the front facing vents. Turns out both cables snapped for both the air control and the vent control. New assembly is 383+. Epoxy will be my lover today.

    Perfect video. I had to fix the vent selector on the other side. The only vent blowing air was was by the pedals, so I had no defog/defroster. But it's the exact same cable/clip set up as this (only underneath the unit) and the issue from this video was the exact problem I had: busted clip so cable was moving freely and would not change vents. Thanks for the video!

    This trick also works for the HVAC mode selector(the one that lets you direct the AC/heater air to head/feet/defrost). This cable appears to also be prone to having the plastic that holds it in place break. Unlike the air temp blend cable, this cable is on the right-hand side of the HVAC control panel, and attached to the BOTTOM side. i just fed a zip tie through the holes already in the plastic around the head of the cable, placed the inner part of the cable in its groove, and cinched the zip tie around the cable, behind the silver ring that's at the end of it so as not to let the outer sheath move back & forth. Works great so far! Before this my blower air would only come out the main(head) vents no matter where the mode selector was set. Good luck!

    The air flow control knob on my 96 sentra stops when I try to turn it to full defrost or full face. I can move it from face/feet to feet/defrost with a little resistance, but I'm afraid if I try to force the knob to full defrost or full face, I'll break something. The knob controls a cable, similar to the problem in the video. The cable is being pushed/pulled, as I watched the other end move back and forth above the accelerator pedal… I'm not sure why it gets stuck… I can't fix the problem, but I've been needing full defrost lately because it's getting cold and rainy.

    Thanks a lot for this. It saved me and my daughter $863.00, not including the taxes and other BS shop fees. The only difference with my daughters car is that she has the Rockford Fosgate stereo with a 6 disc cd changer. I had to go to another TH-cam video to get this stereo out of the way. I also used a nylon zip-tie to hold the metal retainer clip down. It works flawlessly now.
    Thanks again, my freind.

      Pardon my ignorance but did you use one of those black thin zip tie like some people bind audio cables with or more like a garbag bag zip with the bigger teeth? I'm guessing the smaller ones.

    • @capncraigagain
      @capncraigagain 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      gronesy I used a 6mm tie, Now that you mention it, I'll have to anticipate replacing it if it fails. No problem, quick and easy fix after reviewing the videos.
      But thanks for the insight.

      gronesy No problem. I thought you were going to tell me that the ones I used were not tough enough for the job based on your experience doing the same fix. The ones I used are generic, no frills nylon zip ties. I think they will do the trick. If not, it's a simple, quick fix to replace them with something more heavy duty.

    • @JeffJones-dl2sm
      @JeffJones-dl2sm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      capncraigagain I got it secured with two ties and I think it will stay. And you're right, it's easy to get apart. Just a bitch to work inside. Wife reports she can turn the heat all the way off and back again. I just told her to do it slowly-LOL! Did you get it to stay with only one?

    After you get the hot/cold, fan control and face-defrost-feet controls out are the bulbs visible to replace? Reason I ask is my 3rd knob light is out, the other 2 are fine but the third is no good. Can you shed some light please?

    • @r0petrick

      Honestly, I don't remember whether I could see the bulbs in there. I think it's worth trying, though. It only takes about 10 minutes to remove all the panels and screws to get there. Just give it a shot and you'll be surprised how easy it is.

    I had to wrap the tie starting at the front and curling it under the plastic bracket area. Pre-bending the tie helps with that.

    • @elderj1639
      @elderj1639 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here, Chris. My temp control knob is fine, but the vent control knob broke years ago (I remember when I felt something "snap"). Now it's stuck on blowing from the feet and the dash at all times. I plan on performing this same technique to see if I can't figure out the problem. Dealer didn't even bother quoting me a price, stating that it's a special order unit that would run well over $1,000.

    • @retroguy1976
      @retroguy1976 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @elderj1639
      @elderj1639 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I see why the dealer didn't want to fool with it. The vent control mechanism is encased in a plastic shell, so I can't get to it. I'd have to have the whole module replaced, so I'm thinking I can live with the current air flow for the remainder of the car's life.
