Mark, Nice detailed video. I got CSR in 2016 and cancelled in 2020 after fee increase. Accumulated UR points using Ink and other SUBs. Got CSP for SUB a few months back at 6/24 due to them being lenient. 2 days ago had to book international travel for $2.3k. To make most use of UR points I upgraded my CFU to CSR (proving you can have both CSP and CSR at same time but not SUBs for both) and instantly made the chase travel portal flight purchase using 1.5k ish points. CSR annual fees paid for itself. I have other travel redemptions too in coming months. If one has a lot of UR points to redeem for travel including from P2 makes sense to upgrade to CSR and redeem with 1.5x boost. Best option for family economy traveler like me.
CSP effective AF $95 -$50 hotel credit = $45 is very easy to do so without staying at the hotel. Here is how ... 1. Book the hotel through Chase travel portal that cost $50 or more ... - Make sure you choose a refundable reservation. - Some hotels would have a cancellation due date. You should plan a reservation far out. 2. Wait for $50 credit post on your statement credit, then cancel a reservation. $50 hotel credit will stay. You're welcome
If you’re thinking about going from Sapphire preferred to sapphire reserve, and you still carry the minimum $5000 limit credit on the preferred you have to go through a credit check and inquiry to obtain the minimum $10,000 for the reserve credit card. If not, then you cannot product change. If you’re chase sapphire preferred have at least a $10,000 credit limit given to you. Then you can product change to the reserve without a credit check.
Hmm not sure about that. The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card has the same $10K requirement when upgrading from a lower-tier Marriott credit card. I was able to achieve that by transferring $5K from another Chase card. No credit check. No inquiry. That said, if you don't have $5K to transfer over, then you'll have to request a credit-limit increase. Historically, Chase has required a credit check / hard pull for those. However, more recently, that has changed. Source: www.doctorofcredit.com/chase-allowing-credit-limit-increases-via-app-without-hard-credit-pull/
right before I made the comment as I was looking at your video, I called Chase and the representative inform me of it. He said it would be a credit check and everything that come with it to obtain the other amount to be equal to or over 10,000.
@@ctbt1832 - A good data point to know, thanks. All I can say is that was not my experience and representatives may have inaccurate information. Perhaps things have changed recently.
CSP if I was to grab a Chase card, with my Amex Platinum I have travel covered fully the slight chance Amex isn't accepted the CSP Visa would come in handy. I may look into the CSP in early 2026 but for now I will enjoy the Amex Platinum and my other 49 cards hahahaha!
That $300 travel credit would be very useful for when I am forced to get a hotel due to mechanical issues. My employer repays hotel expenses when the truck has to remain in the shop overnight, if I cannot stay in the truck. That singular $300 statement credit would translate into upwards of $600 in value for me, paying for the card by itself. (And I have not had a single year where I haven't needed to get a hotel for at least a couple nights due to some mechanical issue.)
I think the CSP is the better deal but I’m going to opt for the CSR because I want more premium travel benefits. The effective AF for me would be $250 vs the CSP’s $95 because I wouldn’t be using the $50 hotel credit just for the sake of using it (Airbnb enjoyer). So paying an extra $155 would warrant the additional benefits that the CSR brings.
I'd say the CSP is one if not the easiest beginner travel cards to justify for my personal use case. However, I've definitely considered product changing it to the CSR in the near future. It really all comes down to how much you travel and how much you'll be using that 50% point boost on the CSR compared to the 25% point boost on the CSP in my eyes. Nice video as always Mark!
Depends on what you value / care about. If I were to say "use the CSR for an expensive tech purchase," but someone didn't care about insurance protections & the claim filing process, then that suggestion wouldn't be valid for that person. Fortunately, there's not much of a difference between 1X vs. 1.5X.
My issue with the Reserve is for big purchases you would loose out on points say if you use the Freedom flex. Say I want to buy a $2000 dollars TV, I would love to use the Flex and get 3000 points, but if you use the Reserve to prioritize purchase protection then you would only get 2000 points, so you need to factor that on your purchase decisions.
i’d say it also depends on how much you spend in total and how long it lasts per travel. i recently took a cross country vacation and i spent nearly $8,000 and most of them were flights/amtrak, rental cars and hotels. if i travel again this year i might get the CSR straight but i’m still waiting for the elevated offer
As always, a great rundown. The CSR would be even more compelling if their non-portal travel earned a higher multiplier- as it stands now, their non-portal 3x is equivalent to the $150 Amex Green
I have the preferred card and I have four authorized users. I would totally upgrade to the reserve if they allowed me to get authorize users at no cost even if they only let me keep them as preferred with no benefits, but I don’t think they do that.
I have the Amex gold and blue preferred. I have the chase freedom unlimited and I’m thinking of getting rid of the blue preferred for the chase sapphire preferred. I believe the points stack correct? Wondering if this is a smart change
Points from the Freedom Unlimited & Sapphire Preferred do stack. Only you can determine if it's a smart change based on your spending habits & rewards preferences.
For earning points, yes. You'll earn 2X (CSP) or 3X (CSR). For redeeming, no. That is, you won't get the 25% or 50% boost in redemption value because you can't do an award booking via the Chase portal.
Got the CSP, rarely see any use but like most is a must have to transfer points. Not a fan of the Sapphire cards, they need a refresh. Great information and video! ✌️

Besides that groceries at x3 online solidifies the choice. Not a fan of the portal. Use it when you must (No restaurants, higher airline prices and seat choice is a PITA.
I was having such a hard time deciding and then I remembered that's what your channel is for haha. Definitely getting the Reserve, but have some questions. 1. Does the AU get all the same benefits of the card and can the same benefit be used by more than one user? For example, AU and I both want to use the lyft benefit, whereas AU will be the only one using Doordash and Instacart benefit. 2. Does that travel accident insurance replace regular travel insurance you would buy or should you still get it? 3. Does Chase have a list of items that would count for the travel credit outside of airfare? 4. What credit score would you recommend having to apply for the Reserve? My credit score is like 690 due to a high 0% interest balance with a high utilization, so I'm trying to see if I need to wait a couple months to pay that off before applying (although ideally I'd like to apply within the next couple of weeks since I have some big item spend to make soon). Thanks again!

Congratulations on your approval while being over 5/24! I’m curious how over 5/24 were you? I’m 6/24 right now and currently have the CSP, OG Freedom, the Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited. Thinking about pursuing the Ink Preferred too!
@jordan23ww I was 6/24 but I only had the Freedom flex. And it was during an elevated where approvals are somewhat more lax. If they do deny you, you can always call and transfer over some limit from other cards to get them to open.

The portal is undeveloped for me to rationalize the CSR. No restaurants within 100 miles, Atlanta as a connection (favored over weather cancelling DFW/Denver) means Delta, and hit and miss Marriot opportunities keep me in the CSP realm. 3% CSP grocery solidifies the deal. CSR is simply to portal dependent and minimal lounge perks not worth the spend. Yes it has 1.5 but CSP is the better card.
By the way, great video. Detailed, simple layout side by side comparisons, along with extra explaination makes a very confusing topic so understandable. Thank you.
Hey Mark, just wanted your opinion, which card duo do you feel would give you the most in return: chase freedom unlimited + chase sapphire preferred or BOA cash rewards + BOA premium rewards given you have the platinum honors status with BOA? Thanks
The concept of must using the Chase Portal automatically gives the Reserve card the last place as those points are valued at 1X to me since I’ll never use it. Plus the Amex Platinum is far more valuable. I’d go with the preferred.
Does Chase require you to have some sort of existing relationship with them before you can get either card? They're really popular but their entry requirements always seemed steep.
Hi, I have a question please help me. I have my oldest credit card, which is five years and two month old and that card is still open and I have another card which is one year old which I opened last year I want to close that account close that card I’m not gonna close my oldest card which is five years old so if I close the card which is last year one year only will it effects my credit
I will keep oldest account open and need your suggestion or your thoughts on, whether if I can close my last year credit card because I’m not getting benefit out of it. Please help. I will close my last year account. Closing newest account and leave it open the oldest one will that still effect my credit

Can you make a video comparing insurances between premium cards (Amex Plat, CSR, Venture X)? It was intriguing to see the insurance difference in this video
Mark! I am coming up on 2 years on my Sapphire Preferred. I have maintained a $0 balance and paid in full each month. Should I be thinking about cancelling this card in hopes of getting another welcome bonus? I do not have any other Chase credit cards, and this my 2nd youngest account.
By far the best and most comprehensive comparison between the two cards that I've seen on you tube. Makes it so easy to decide which to choose depending on a person's situation. 👍👍👍
My CSR paid for itself within two months this year. I traveled to 11 different countries on my global drinking to tour. That said, I don’t see how I could possibly make it work next year.
Just getting into redeeming for travel and got the CSP. Might upgrade to the CSR next year but not sold just yet. Would honestly love a total revamp of the CSP between rewards and credits even if it bumped the price to around $150
if Chase opens up at least 10 US lounges that can rival Centurion & Capital One, then AMEX is in trouble.... travel credit over airline incidental credit anyday
Perhaps in part because the standard Venture card has been around for a lot longer. Already did that comparison video, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/ZF37kE21tJ4/w-d-xo.html
@@MarkReese Wow thank you. I work retail and that's what I see the most. Just never understood why not upgrade to the X when it's practically the same annual fee when the $300 is returned. That's how I saw the CSR before they bumped up the annual fee +$100
Another informative video🎉 Question for you, If you’re travelling outside the US for a few months, would you use the CSP or CapOneVentureX? Basically which one is better value for accruing points via travel spend?
Awesome update! I was looking for a detailed updated 2023 comparison on these two cards. I have CSP but have always wondered about getting to CSR. I still can't justify that annual fee on the CSR. Its alot of work to make sure you get the maximum values that make the CSR worth it. In terms of the non-travel uses of the cards, I think the CSP is a better, more versatile card. I don't have the bandwidth for a card like CSR in terms of maximinze benefits. Can you maybe do an updated video on your best cards for dining? What is your opinion as to the reasonable expectation on dining rewards, especially outside the Amex ecosystem? With my CC set up, I have tons of 3% back on dining, but I can't find 4% or 5% card for dining for the life of me. Thanks again so much for your amazing videos.
For me, my choice was and still is the CSP because I’m not traveling enough to desire lounge access and the better travel insurances. The $95/yr is perfect at my level. With that said, Chase needs to revamp these cards like yesterday! Their reward categories are generally weak and this needs to change. 🤦🏾♂️
As always, the content here is very informative! Am I the only one who takes screen shots? (You might insert your channel name in the upper corner of these slides.) ❤😉 I have a request. Can you PLEASE break down WHAT purchases are included and excluded to qualify for the Chase welcome bonus points????? The site is pretty vague. I need to know my spending will justify the application. (Home and auto repairs, medical bills, etc) Thank You!!!! 🎉
Thanks! I don't plan to include valid purchases vs. invalid purchases. That's because nearly all "regular purchases" are valid. Home repairs, medical bills, auto repairs, etc. are all fine. You can view all the exclusions in the offer terms, and they're nearly always the same for all cards. In the case for the CSP, "purchases" do not include: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable

By the way, great video. Detailed, simple layout side by side comparisons, along with extra explaination makes a very confusing topic so understandable. Thank you.
Glad to help!
Hey Mark, just wanted your opinion, which card duo do you feel would give you the most in return: chase freedom unlimited + chase sapphire preferred or BOA cash rewards + BOA premium rewards given you have the platinum honors status with BOA? Thanks
For travel, I would never consider a BOA setup at this time. Chase wins all day every day ✈
For cash back, I'd choose BOA 💵
The concept of must using the Chase Portal automatically gives the Reserve card the last place as those points are valued at 1X to me since I’ll never use it. Plus the Amex Platinum is far more valuable. I’d go with the preferred.
💯👍
Can you make a video on the latest changes to the Amex Platinum AU, thanks!
Just posted! Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/4vzqcHvNPdc/w-d-xo.html
Does Chase require you to have some sort of existing relationship with them before you can get either card? They're really popular but their entry requirements always seemed steep.
No preexisting relationship is required.
@@Gurwinderparmar - The decision is up to you. If I wanted to close the card, I would close it. Here's a link to another video you may find helpful: th-cam.com/video/UcWqixdQk30/w-d-xo.html
I would like to close it because it’s annual fee card and I’m not getting good value out of it. I will keep my oldest account which is five years ago. I will keep that card and close this annual fee card which I opened last year since I’m not getting good value out of it, does it sound good?
@@Gurwinderparmar - Sounds good to me.
Can you make a video comparing insurances between premium cards (Amex Plat, CSR, Venture X)? It was intriguing to see the insurance difference in this video
Perhaps at some point!
Mark! I am coming up on 2 years on my Sapphire Preferred. I have maintained a $0 balance and paid in full each month. Should I be thinking about cancelling this card in hopes of getting another welcome bonus? I do not have any other Chase credit cards, and this my 2nd youngest account.
No, if you want to get another Sapphire-card bonus, you'll need to wait 48 months.
@@MarkReese thanks for the tips! Keep up the great work
By far the best and most comprehensive comparison between the two cards that I've seen on you tube. Makes it so easy to decide which to choose depending on a person's situation. 👍👍👍
Glad you found it helpful!
My CSR paid for itself within two months this year. I traveled to 11 different countries on my global drinking to tour. That said, I don’t see how I could possibly make it work next year.
What a fun trip that must've been! 🍻✈
Just getting into redeeming for travel and got the CSP. Might upgrade to the CSR next year but not sold just yet. Would honestly love a total revamp of the CSP between rewards and credits even if it bumped the price to around $150
💯👍
if Chase opens up at least 10 US lounges that can rival Centurion & Capital One, then AMEX is in trouble.... travel credit over airline incidental credit anyday
I'm looking forward to seeing the Sapphire Lounge network grow!
Love the CSR.Definitely value it over the CSP. The CSR was my 1st Chase card.
Awesome to hear!
I've seen a ton of venture cards being used vs the X. Can you do a venture vs x card video?
Perhaps in part because the standard Venture card has been around for a lot longer.
Already did that comparison video, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/ZF37kE21tJ4/w-d-xo.html
@@MarkReese Wow thank you. I work retail and that's what I see the most. Just never understood why not upgrade to the X when it's practically the same annual fee when the $300 is returned. That's how I saw the CSR before they bumped up the annual fee +$100
Another informative video🎉
Question for you,
If you’re travelling outside the US for a few months, would you use the CSP or CapOneVentureX? Basically which one is better value for accruing points via travel spend?
I'd probably use both. CSP for travel booked directly & dining. C1VX for anything else to earn 2X.
Thanks 🫡
Glad it helped! Thanks for the suggestion on an updated dining video 👍
Use Flex and transfer points
Great way to do it!
For me, my choice was and still is the CSP because I’m not traveling enough to desire lounge access and the better travel insurances. The $95/yr is perfect at my level. With that said, Chase needs to revamp these cards like yesterday! Their reward categories are generally weak and this needs to change. 🤦🏾♂️
Haha they already did change recently, and I agree, they need to change again 😆
@@MarkReese Yh, they did like back in 2020/21, but that revamp was laughable at best IMHO.
As always, the content here is very informative! Am I the only one who takes screen shots? (You might insert your channel name in the upper corner of these slides.) ❤😉
I have a request. Can you PLEASE break down WHAT purchases are included and excluded to qualify for the Chase welcome bonus points????? The site is pretty vague. I need to know my spending will justify the application. (Home and auto repairs, medical bills, etc)
Thank You!!!! 🎉
Chase is pretty liberal on the spend requirements for bonuses. Almost anything counts except cash advances or peer to peer payments
Great video! Thank you for the information! I always love and appreciate how much you dig into the ins and outs of these cards in your videos! That is so helpful!
Thanks, glad you like the presentation format! 🎬
In my case it’s neither
