Hey guys, in this video, I do a full comparison of the Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Chase Sapphire Reserve, explain why I personally upgraded my Sapphire Preferred to the Sapphire Reserve, and show the full upgrade process with my live call with Chase Customer Service.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the most overlooked cards in the credit card game, but I personally believe it can be one of the best credit cards on the market for the right person. So to put that thought to the test, I figured what better way to do it than getting the card myself? Now maybe you’re someone similar to me who has had the CSP and has always kinda questioned whether or not the Chase Sapphire Reserve is worth an upgrade. Or maybe you’re looking at the CSR as an option for you on your search for the best premium travel credit card for your needs. Or maybe you just wanna learn something today… Either way, this video is for you.
By the end of it, I hope you have a better understanding of who this card is really meant for and whether or not it’s worth its hefty annual fee for you and your personal situation.

Congrats on thew new card Spencer! You are certainly building up your premium travel credit card collection! The CSR is incredibly underrated, but it also desperately needs some kind of refresh since it's been the same for so long. Great move on getting that CLI first before the PC and glad I could help you out with that 🤩. Looking forward to your CLI video - I know it's going a be a banger!

I'll be the first to welcome in a card refresh, don't get me wrong, but luckily I'll still get positive value without that refresh, so I'm looking forward to getting some use out of it. It's always cool to see others make use of a card that I wouldn't! Seems like the CSR is a great fit for your usecase, especially when it comes to your redemptions and your home airport though! Maybe I'll consider whe my next 48 months comes up, but will stick to my Amex Plat + VX til then! Who knows, a TON will have likely changed by then. Awesome video as always Spencer!

Absolutely love the 3x travel category on the Reserve. It definitely seems like the Sapphire Reserve makes a lot of sense within your travel preferences, and being able to take advantage of 1.5 cents/point guaranteed especially for domestic travel. Such impeccable timing as I am coming up on my one-year anniversary for my CSP and am really thinking I want that CSR. The 50 percent bonus is amazing plus actual lounge access worth something is sounding better and better. I just wish Chase offered something different like the VX does with the bonus anniversary miles each year or some other kind of annual fee reducer. I don't really use Lyft, or any of the other perks that the CSR offers but, man that 50 percent bonus plus the 300-travel credit will go far in helping to offset the CSR annual fee, great video!

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Haha that's awesome how that works out sometimes. I do wish that the CSR provided direct credits that offset the annual fee each year and I'd be happy to see them refresh the card, but like you said, even with just the annual travel credit and 50% redemption boost, this card makes a lot of sense. I'm excited to let y'all know how much value I get from it!

I heard the agent remind you to sign up for Priority Pass, which made me wonder, how does that work, if you already have a Priority Pass membership but then get additional cards with that perk? Do you link your account somehow with each eligible credit card? I have had Priority Pass through the Amex Platinum for a few years but now just got a Venture X that also has it.

For airline travel hackers who buy one-way tickets (usually last minute international award tickets) the CSR is the only card that I know of whose insurance covers the one-way trip. All the other premium travel consumer cards require a round trip ticket for travel insurances.

Great video Spencer, I recently upgraded from the csp to the csr. My reason was a little different, i have a ton of points ans the extra 0.25% made a difference larger than the annual fee of the card. Travel partners did not make sense for this trip. I also switch 6 months into my second year. The 300 dollar travel credit does not get prorated and you get the full value right away. I heard that the travel credit will be based on your switch date and not your card renewal date.

I recently travelled to Houston to see a buddy from college and only had the VX priority pass so wasn’t able to get the credit at IAH’s restaurant. CSR PP would have definitely came in handy lol. I whole heartedly agree about choosing the right card based on your home airport. My home airport is Denver and that mainly only have 3 options. That being, the newly opened C1 Lounge, the Centurion Lounge, and the gigantic United Clubs. But since I am not loyal to an airline and mainly go for the best fare, that just leaves me with the Centurion and C1 Lounges. And the Platinum card doesn't fit my spending habblits since I would make use of almost none of the credits other than maybe the travel credit. The C1 VX just made the most sense and I think it was the right choice. I would have definitely chosen the CSR if Denver had any priority pass lounges but, for some strange reason, they don't. So the C1VX was the best option for me. That being said, if a priority pass lounge opens or the priority pass restaurants in Denver are better than the abysmal choices there are now, then I can see myself jumping ship to the CSR over the C1VX. Regardless, the C1VX lounge in Denver is actually quite nice. I fully recommend it to anyone, the food is really good. 9.5/10

Definitely feel you on airports affecting your lounge access. I just downgraded to the CSP as the CSR wasn't giving me much more than the VX. Our home airport is Dulles, so they have quite a few priority pass lounges and the new C1 lounge.

I do get your point as to why CSR works better for you than the Platinum. Most cards multipliers/points earnings has everything to do with lifestyle and demographics. I wouldn't go with a card where the main multiplier is gas since I live in the city and don't need or have a car. I do however have the Platinum which works for me and I use the Centurion Lounge often at my airport here in NY.. Great vid Spencer 💥

Spencer, I seek to upgrade to the CSR from the CSP. I know I cannot have both, so my dilemma is how to get the CSR card with its sign-up bonus and at the same time keep the CSP points I’ve heretofore earned.
I have been under the impression that when one Product Changes, I.e., from CSP to CSR, you do not get access to the welcome bonus of the upgraded card. Is this true? During your Upgrade Video with Chase Sapphire Customer Service, I may have missed discussion on that topic, along with any references to what happens to the points I’ve heretofore earned with the CSP?
Relevant Background: I have had my CSP for over 2 years and feel there is more value to me in the CSR. I foolishly missed the son-on bonus and am probably at 4/24 with no other non-name- branded Chase Cards.
Any guidance would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Mike

I have both the CSR and the venture x. I’ve been traveling the world this year and both have their places. I actually used the CSR for two major appliance purchases for the warranty extensions. The capital one lounge in Dallas. I’ve used the CSR Priority Pass lounges in Australia, USA, New Zealand, Austria, and Ireland. Unfortunately, LAX is a wasteland for CSR benefits.

Austin with 4 lounges...meanwhile my home airport is Pittsburgh...they have an American Airlines Admirals Club (which I can't justify the card to get into it) and a very outdated, small, and dirty Priority Lounge. But at least since I have to connect somewhere pretty much every time I fly too out of Pittsburgh, I still can use lounges in other cities at times.

Prefer to book directly with airlines or hotels not through their portal (and most likely would use Marriott or Hilton cards for hotel bookings), so 5x or 10x on those doesn't really appeal to me. The $50 credit on the Preferred is easy enough to use (glad they didn't go all Amex on it and make it $5 a month!) for one stay during the year and $45 effective annual fee is a lot easier to justify.

Since I just product changed, everything with the account stayed the same other than the card itself, so the points are still all on the same card account!

Frankly, I became disenchanted with your channel after watching the Mac Book Pro video. I commented at the time "The saved points and the travel credit alone would make up for the difference between CSR and CSP annual fees." I am glad you are learning.
