I currently have the Venture X as my first travel card and I love it! I use it to pay for everything except food and groceries. I just used the $300 travel credit and it definitely helped lower my vacation for this year. I usually only take 1-2 trips and I already feel like this card has helped with one of them. Generally feel like you can’t go wrong with this card if you are an average person who goes to 1-2 vacations a year.

I think the main reason the AMEX Platinum doesn't have a middle category is to cross-sell folks on the Gold (I admit to having both). The Gold is a great points earner for day to day spend with 4x on US groceries and 4x on global restaurants. The Platinum is the card you carry for the perks such as the extra/elevated insurances, CLEAR, lounge access, the concierge, etc.

Good one on Lyft. I agree . LP reduced service fees. I use Lyft mainly on trips but those service fees reduced almost $2 each ride. To add probably for all three cards I'd guess have the use credits that pop up. A certain gas chain or resturant coffee house 10% off with card use. My use triggers $2 to $3 a month but has been up to $5. Lowering effective annual fees for all the cards presented.

This is all true! As much as I love my Amex Gold and Platinum, I wish the Amex Platinum card could raise the annual fee by $300 and add permanent x5 multipliers for grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations. That way, I can ditch the gold card that I'm paying 250/year for anyways and have less cards.

As someone that travels 11 months out of the year, the CSR is the best travel card. As a Visa I know it will be accepted in practically every place that accepts credit card…which is one of the knocks against the Amex Platinum. CSR has better transfer partners, better insurance coverage (it covered my Emergency room visit) and better earnings categories than the Venture X. Something you didn’t mention is at a valuation of 1.5 cents through the Chase travel portal, airfare purchases count as cash purchases which yield airlines miles and qualify for airline status.
With that said, I think the CSR is the best travel card overall for international travel however instead of paying $75 for an additional CSR I opted to get the Venture X as it worked out to be positive $5 and now I have 5 Priority Pass accounts to gift to family and I can use the Venture X as my catch-all.

    Just to provide more clarity...
I have both CSR (primary) and Venture X (backup card). One of my friends use Amex Platinum. We compare our feedbacks.
I would prioritize CSR first, Venture X second, AMEX last for the following reasons, starting on year 2:
    1) Access to multiple airport lounges are nice, but you will ultimately settle with ONE 3 hours before your flight over time. CSR is the only card of the 3 to offer restaurant credits.
    2) I don't think the video mentioned that AMEX Plat car rental insurance is secondary, not primary like CSR or VX
    3) When travelling (within US), UBER (Amex) or Lyft (CSR) is usually more useful to me, which is 10x points, discounts, and get priority. VX is lacking.
    4) VX is a good backup card if you use $400/year in travels. Also good to add members to Priority Pass (CSR is $75 each)
    5) I see AMEX has too much "coupon" books. CSR is good for everyday use, VISA, and is more widely accepted than AMEX.

I think the biggest perk that we are missing here for CSR is the trifecta. Unlike AMEX or Venture X, pairing it with Flex and Unlimited make it worth it with all the points you can gather in the UP system. But just the card alone, Venture X definitely comes out on top.

Before watching: The Amex Platinum provides the most upside value for frequent travelers if you know how to use it. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is for folks who travel a ton domestically and utilize the 1.5cpp value through Chase's travel portal. The Venture X is the easiest to get value from with just one booking per year.
After watching: It sounds like we agree on each of them! I don't think there's an objective best card for everyone, but instead, that decision has to be made on an individual basis based on what you value the most. Great video John!

Wife and I only travel 1-2 times a year internationally and we are not the bougie kind of people so all the added fancy lounge perks and whatnot, are just not for us. I know a lot of people look at these cards for aspirational trips with one other person but I mostly travel as a family of four. Unless I want to violate my happy wife policy and leave her outside of the airport lounge I have to make her an authorized user which is $0 on the VX, $75 on the CSR and $175 on the Amex Platinum so I would automatically have to factor that into the annual fee. That and the VX having an effective annual fee of +$5, primary CDW (not on the Amex Platinum if I recall correctly) makes this an easy choice for me.

I have the VX and love it. The travel portal is easy to use, and I love the simplicity of it. Although it doesn't have dining, or groceries, that's very easily fixed by picking up the SavorOne or Savor card.
I also picked up the CSR for the welcome bonus, but plan on downgrading to the CSP. With the Cap One duo, there's no need for the CSR. I think I'll downgrade to the CSP, then pick up the freedom flex to get the 5X rotating categories.
I know Chase has Hyatt, but my wife and I don't really care about hotels, we go with whatever is cheaper. We prefer to splurge on flights rather than hotels since wherever we travel we're not in the hotel that much anyway.

The $300 travel credit on the Venture x only works by booking through Capital one travel portal. Because you have to use the travel portal in order to get the credit that credit should be discounted in your evaluation. In fact, you discounted 10x and 5x respectively on the cards because you only get that multiplier through their respective travel portals. So you need to do a re-evaluation on the venture x's score.

@@darkness919 glad to hear it and thank you for the reply ! I’ve currently got a gold card for dining. Looking for a premium travel card. Would love access to the Centurion lounges as they have one in LAX and no priority pass lounges at LAX according to the Cap1 website. I travel either from SFO or LAX. My biggest concern is I’ve heard it’s hard to get into lounges with priority pass and lots get turned away if lounges are too full. Makes me think the lounges owned by the card companies are the most important lounges, of which Amex has the most compared to VX and CSR. But I wouldn’t use the other credits on the plat so it wouldn’t be worth it. How is the VX lounge access? Any luck with it? I’d say that’s the biggest perk of the card.

I'm not really eager to jump on Chase's products because they're notorious for all their rules (i.e., 5/24) and their pre-approval tool is down right now, and Capital One can be pretty stingy with their cards (the more cards you have the less likely they are to approve you) and credit limit increases.

Luckily I have access to enough options nearby that offer pickup so I get the full amount credit and not wasting on fees etc. I’m coming out positive $110 for the year (with the $300 travel credit) and that’s before you factor in anything else like tsa pre check or the airport lounges/ restaurant credits and all the other benefits etc. I am not as frequent a traveler as most that have this card but its still worth it to me, considering I’m essentially getting paid $110 to use this card! I debated getting the Amex but when I was reminded that it is not as widely accepted overseas, that made my decision for me. I wanted a travel card that I could use everywhere I traveled, since I don’t travel enough to justify getting 2 cards.

Capital One travel portal is not that great, if you were to ask me. I just got the Venture X card and the first thing I thought to use the card on, was for international to count towards the $4000 in 3 months.
But the prices are quite higher compared to if you were to book on the airlines website directly, and the selection was limited. I called Venture X’s customer service and was told that yeah they may not have the same amount of flights. Ultimately, I booked my flight with a travel agency, and the difference between the price on the travel portal vs the travel agency was quite significant.
It is still a good travel card, but the travel portal is nothing to write home about on my first go at it.

@@dennisvargas7719 while in theory this sounded pretty good, one of the qualification criteria is to have the exact match of the original itinerary that you made within the last 24 hours, so if you see another flight that’s cheaper, that’s from the airlines’ site, you won’t be qualified for the price match, as the C1 travel portal does not have that exact flight. That’s part of the problem.

Some of the benefits that you mentioned for the other cards like Return protection, Purchase protection and Rental insurance also apply to the CSR. I've had the CSR for almost a year now and it's been great! I tend to travel more than average and was able to redeem some of my points at more than 4 CPP with Air France this summer. After seeing those kinda returns, the CSR quickly became my everyday card. There's a ton of small benefits like $15 credit per month on DoorDash and Instacart as well which work best with my spend. The AMEX credits are way too specific. I am probably gonna get the Venture X this year only because the card is paying for itself. Will probably still continue using the CSR for most of my spending.

It also gets you elevated status with Avis, but I'm not familiar with their product so I don't know whether that benefit is as good as National's.
