As one who had both cards and has been traveling full time for the last 4 years, Chase is the one to go with world wide! I dropped that Amex because it's not accepted in most countries. It's great for booking hotels and flights, but for dining and daily expenses, the Amex is not useful for the expense. If you stay in the states and travel occasionally, then Amex would be fine. But if you travel the world a bunch, or full time like me, then the Sapphire Reserve card wins hands down.
It’s funny because I just recently got the CSR and had this same thought. I’m holding both since I can get value out of both, but the one thing is when it’s time to travel internationally, the Amex is going to collect dust. The peace of mind of knowing your card works is immeasurable.
Just got my CSR finally and the platinum going bye bye have to get my saks $50 and the final $75 from the airline benefits...ohhh my final Uber eats .....I do get about $940 back but could only use the card for airline tickets and car rentals ..... with the CSR I could get the $300 in one booking ......so its a $250 card
@@omarjames11 And the value of not having to keep track of a bunch of credits is priceless. For now I'm going to continue the mental gymnastics of the Platinum while I have energy, but I know one day I'm going to get sick of it and cancel it, then stick with something simpler like a CSR or Venture X.
1. Team Amex Platinum 2. Deciding factors: LAX and PHL lounges (since I’m at these airports the most), Equinox credit (was a member over a year before I got the platinum), and the other credits for a lot of the expenses I already have. 3. I would switch to CSR once they have lounges in LA and Philly (Dallas and Atlanta are important cities too). Overall it has better multipliers.
Super important travel perk that I had painful lesson on: Chase reserve has delayed baggage insurance. Amex Plat doesn't. Chase will pay you $100 per day your bag is lost. Airlines usually give you a measly $50 while you wait for luggage.
Ive had both and got rid of the platinum. Centurion lounge is great but very rarely do i fly into a place that has one and neither does my home airport. You also can't bring in a guest which sucks. Also the plat charged me money for transferring points which ticked me off. CSR gives you access to priority pass restaurants which is very nice and with my wife she gets in with me. Its accepted throughout the world because its visa as Amex i was always told we don't take amex....very annoying.
🥤I’m team both. Amex for flights (especially ANA for non-JP flights). Chase for Hyatt. My spend breakdown is: - Flights (direct): Plat (duh) - Hotels: CSR x10 - Food: Gold for x4, CFU with x6 if they don’t take Amex. - Lyft: CSR for x10 - Uber: BBP for x2 and $25/mo credit from Gold+Plat - Subway: CSR for x3 - Catchall: (x3 because of double cashback for 2024, but otherwise would be x2 with BBP) I also put my tuition and HOA on the CFU for 3x back this year. Next year I’ll probably go back to what I was doing before which was churning Ink cards, or may switch to BILT on rent days for x2 (even with a 3% fee on tuition, BILT points are so valuable to me I’ll easily get my money’s worth). For me to switch Amex would need to lose ANA, Chase would need to lose Hyatt. That or some crazy change to the lineup that gives a way better redemption rate on everything I use the other for.
🥤Currently going towards year 2 with CSR. I was looking at the Amex until they started doing couponing. If they want to treat high-end cards like coupon books, I will treat them like coupon books.
🥤I went with the preferred and platinum. Since the CSP has more bonus categories and also has primary CDW. I do get use of some of the platinum coupon credits
Team CSR. Just watched your other video that CSR will stop Priority pass “restaurant” access benefit July 2024!!! We have used this often at SFO so gives us food for thought to change. Recently visited the CSR lounge in Boston which was super nice!
GOOD info- as always. I love the schwab plat and transfering MR @ 1.1 CPP to my brokerage. That has really helped me kick start my portfolio. The CS Prefered seems to be a good match with the Plat with only a $95 fee and 80K UR points I got in a flyer the other day.
Also Delta Skye lounges are unlimited on Platinum if you spend 75,000 dollars within the year and it will be good for the following year. So you can get more than 10.
Hey Sebby! I’d love to see your two player strategy and how that plays out with the cards in the current market! Your last video was over five years ago and would love to see an updated one:)
I have the CSR and really did not see the true value until this past Christmas flying home my flight got delayed due to weather overnight. I had over 125000 points racked up and logged into the chase portal through my phone reserved a room at a Hyatt paid with points and it took me like 10 mins. It made a bad situation so much easier to deal with.
Now that is a good way to deal with being stranded. Nothing as frustrating as standing in line at the counter waiting and HOPING they have a hotel voucher, transport and meal vouchers. I was in line and the hotel rooms were out and I had to sleep in the airport
Overnight stay due to delay qualifies you for CSR's trip insurance: reimburses you up to $500 for meals, lodging, toiletries, medication. Get those dollars and points back :)
🥤 always keep CSR and only close in the 3rd year (so I can reapply for the bonus) and only open Platinum when there's additional incentive now, ever since they changed their lounge rules.
DONT GET THE PLAT FIRST. If you don’t already have a gold or green card, get AT LEAST the gold card first. You will not be eligible for the SUB for each if you get the Plat first.
🥤 I am team chase sapphire reserve I live in Boston and they have a sapphire lounge here. Interesting question about the AMEX platinum. They don’t have a centurion lounge in Boston 😞 It seems like a lot of work to maximize all of the credits. Thank you Sebby! ❤️
🥤I was definitely looking into both of these to get to our family. I decide to go with The Ritz Carlton since we are in the Boston area, it does give us better lounge access and we are more focus on a hotel type of card at this time. I might gonna get the platinum in the future, but for now the math doesn't work in our favor. Great video as always Sebby. 👍
Since I used to happily pay the $95 for the CSP, I add that cost to the amount of value I get back from the CSR. So my CSR gets me $395 in upfront value because I was going to pay that $95 anyway to have access to Chase UR for travel. Makes it easier to justify that annual fee or authorized user fee. I make up the rest of it with my Priority Pass eating credits.
🥤I'll probably wind up getting both. But if i could only choose one then it would have to be the CFR for 3 reasons 1. Higher acceptance 2. Primary CDW is so clutch! 3. Can be a great daily driver due to better multipliers
I appreciate your breakdown! I'm currently going back and forth about which one to get, but after this, I'm still leaning toward the Platinum card for the lounge access.
Not mentioned in the video.... The Platinum lounge access does not include any guests. If you want guests you have to spend at least 75k/year on the card.
I have both. So far on a net basis I am slightly positive on both I guess, but I am hoping to do a business class redemption that will add a lot of value.
Solid video as always. I noticed the Platinum card can get you into each Sapphire Lounges in the USA once for free. I’m looking forward to trying it out at JFK in a few months.
1) #teamamex 2) Already in the Amex family with the gold card (no Chase cards) 3) 🤔 A game changer/new benefit that’s not offered on ANY other cards on market.
If I would choose, I might lean towards the CSR. Something unrelated to this video. I am thinking of getting the Capital One Venture X & Citi AAdvantage Executive. Even though the Venture X may not be as good, I think a combination of these two may be something unique. Also, the reason I brought up the AAdvantage Executive is that my parents have the Platinum Select & want to give them an upgrade. At the same time, it makes sense for me
I do both. The Chase trifecta is my main earning workhorse, and the Plat is there because my credits more than offset the annual fee for me. I don't really spend on it unless there's a good card offer or I'm buying airline tickets.
You mean to tell me everyone has access to the Chase lounges regardless if they’re CC holders or not? Im moving to Vegas and am looking to get a travel card. Was considering Delta Reserve but there’s no hub in Vegas so am considering another.
🥤I am a fan of both. Platinum Business and CSR have been staples of my wallet for years. I use the CSR for my Priority pass. Thanks for the head-to-head.
Domestically, Priority Pass sucks. It’s much better internationally. However most of the domestic airports I go through have a Centurion Lounge so I’m good wherever I go.
Feel like CSR is stuck somewhere between the Plat, which is the true best lounge access card plus hotel status, and the Venture X which is a better casual traveler card plus has 2x catch all.
I'd love to see a video doing a side by side comparison of AMEX's travel website to Chase's travel website, if you haven't already. A big factor to consider are their websites, and if they aren't any good, it can be a serious handicap for that company's cards.
🥤Amex Platinum has more hoops to jump through, but I feel the upside is a lot greater than the Chase Sapphire Reserve. You have to be a big spender to make the CSR work well. The Amex platinum can work for almost anyone who is willing to put in the work, even if you're not a huge spender
I just got the Platinum and I am actually able to use all tops credit. Essentially brought my card AF to 0. I am super happy with amex customer service so far so I will be keeping the card for a while.
Thanks for the informative video. I tried to apply for the Amex Plat card (Schwab) but gave up when notified that I would not be eligible for the SUB. I think it's because I had the DL Skymiles Amex Gold card previously (canceled in June 2023). Is that right? How long is the waiting period before I am eligible for the SUB for a new Amex Plat card?
One thing that’s worth noting and I’m not sure how the AMEX portal is, but the Chase portal is typically three times more for flights than if you book direct. I’m on the fence right now between the sapphire reserve and the platinum card. The one thing that I really love about the platinum is that you can get 5X points by booking directly through your airline which I think is totally clutch!
I have both and will probably be downgrading the CSR to the CSP as I can't figure out how to utilize it. This is because of my other cards which are the Chase United club card and chase freedom flex. While I like to use the CSR for the Hyatt, there can be better deals out there on Hotwire or even good airbnb options
Whenever people defend the Amex Platinum, I think of that The Office episode where they're trying to win that coupon book because its "Worth $15000!" 😂 The fact Amex Priority Pass doesn't get you into PP restaurants is a massive miss. Edit: 2 days later and now Chase PP doesn't give restaurants either 😭
One of the biggest differentiators in the coverage that almost never gets talked about: chase travel protections kick in if you pay any part of your trip with the card. Amex only kicks in if you pay for a round trip with the card in full. If you buy a one way flight, you are SOL with the platinum
I'm team Amex because I personally don't like anything Chase. I primarily use my platinum card for Lounge Access and Rental Cars (don't have a vehicle) and just pay for liability. I do take advantage of the annual Hotel offer and Airline Offer. That's about it. Thanks for your videos.👍
Waiting on a fence for the next CSP good welcome bonus. Player 2 for 195$ it's a nonsense, if will be reduced - maybe I'll change my mind.🥤 Sebby, please remind me if grandfathered Sapphire prevents you from getting modern Sapphire.
🥤 I travel to Mexico often and most places don’t take Amex (I have the gold one) and I have to take out money in cash! Do you recommend Chase given it’s a Visa card?!
🥤 I'm team Amex, but I currently have both cards in my wallet right now. I need more higher-end experiences from chase to truly swap teams. Amex does a decent job for the YOLO stuff, at least for non-wealthy people like me lol.
🥤Got the CSR a few weeks ago since I travel a good bit for work and already have the Chase Trifecta. I care a lot about the points earning potential of the cards, so the lack of 1. the ability to get a platinum and THEN a gold wit both SUBs and 2. the effective annual fee of the Chase set up vs the Amex set up really swayed me towards Chase. I would certainly like to see the CSR either earn a little better, say 3.5 or 4x on dinning, and/or have hotel status in line with the Platinum though. One thought: Your calculator seems to only compare card to card, which is the easy solution. I would be very interested in a calculator that takes into account other cards in a series. For example, I spend $3500 a year at restaurants, but that 3x is the same back either on the CSR, or on my CFF, so I would be interested in understanding the costs of the setups and then swappings cards between them!
Not related to this video but I was wondering if it’s worth using airline partners or going with another company? Like delta is partnered with hertz but I heard national is better.
🥤I have the CSR, feeling like it should have more everyday reward and loyalty bonuses, groceries and gas bonuses should be included for the price, but all rounder a good card
🥤 I’m considering the Amex plat because I like travel and lounge access. And I think I can easily use some of the the credits to cover the yearly fee. However, I’m hearing the $695 fee is due for an increase in 2025. If this is the case would they include more perks? And I’m thinking of waiting for a better incentive than than 80,000 points currently offered. What’s your thoughts Sebby?
I’ve been team CSR for the past 6 years or so but picked up the AMEX Platinum last month after receiving a 150K bonus point sign up offer. I’m planning on keeping both for now but it seems like the CSR has better utility for most of my everyday use cases. However, AMEX partners with ANA and since I travel to Japan regularly, its definitely make sense to keep the platinum for now.
🥤just upgraded from amx gold back to plat I missed the plat like the clear credit Uber Eats and the companion card option but only to cheap plastic card - I missed the coupon book - any value in product changing from a grandfathered freedom limited to a csr?
I've had a CSR for years and it's great, but lounges in ATL suck. Just applied for both amex gold and platinum today for lounges and points. Managed to snag a 100k points offer on Amex gold and 175k on platinum. About to go on my honeymoon so I'll have plenty of restaurant spend on my gold and I think bills will take care of the spend on platinum. Overall, it'll take away from the value of the CSR, but I feel like the primary rental coverage and easy travel credit will make it worth keeping for me. Amex won't give me good points multipliers on rentals anyways. I don't think I'll cap out the dining cap for points on gold, but if I do, I've got CSR to fall back on. And work won't let me book hotels through amex, so those will go on CSR too.
Regarding Delta Sky Club access -- I keep reading that the one visit = 24-hour period is effective starting Feb 1, 2025. Can anyone confirm whether it is the case now? @AskSebby did it work on your Paris trip?
🥤 I feel like this is iPhone vs android and whatever you start with is the ecosphere you’ll probably continue (expert users aside). I personally never considered banking with Chase because of my relationship with Navy Fed so their CCs were never really on my radar. Subsequently I never really sought after AMEX they started reaching out to me. Now just like with the iPhone we are trying to maximize their ecosphere through watching your videos in our free time. Within the last year we’ve acquired the AMEX plat, gold and business blue cash sadly in that order. Now we’re trying to distribute our 5-7k monthly spend between cards to get the most value. I’m sure you have a past video on how to maximize your relationship with AMEX but a 2024 version would be amazing! 🙏
Sebby, I watched a video of yours from 5 years ago where you showed how superior the Sapphire was to the Platinum for airline travel protections. Have things changed here a lot or did I mishear you in this video?
🥤Hey Sebby, can you still get multiple SUBs across AMEX platinum variants? I had the vanilla platinum for several years and recently cancelled it in favor of the Venture X + Ritz. However I am a Schwab customer and one day may benefit from the annual fee discount. I read recently you can only get the SUB for one platinum variant for life, but I don’t see anything definitive
Venture X is the best, especially with Reserve recently cutting priority pass restaurant access. I also noticed capital 1 expanding their lounge network, they are sponsoring a plaza premium lounge in DCA. The benefits for Capital 1 are so easy to use also it's crazy how good the value is for what you get. I got the venture x recently, used the $300 travel credit and saved $100 from auto price drop protection for the flight and $48 on a $400 hotel booking using the 24h price match, and the call for that took 7 minutes!
CSR seems to not have much of a value. The AMEX platinum seems to be way better in my opinion especially if you combine it with AA Mastercard. I heavily considering cancelling my chase sapphire preferred card

Your guests can still get access if you don’t meet the 75k min, but they have to pay $50 per correct?

I fucked up. I read it was the opposite until about six months ago. I got the plat first.
I only qualify for the 60k sub versus the 90k sub. You think it’s still worth?
Got 70k for the gold 3 years ago and just got 175 k for the platinum

Just got Plat (150k) + gold again (they followed up with 90k offer even though I had it before and canceled in 2021). CSP on the chase side.
Amex no longer offers lounge Access to Delta Sky Club unless you’re flying Main cabin or above. Aka no economy tickets.
I’m just learning about travel CCs but why is Amex plat 5x clutch ?
I don’t have these cards I have the CSP. If DFW had a chase lounge I would consider. Do you have any of these cards?🥤
I have had the CSR for 4 years now and have never paid the AU fee.
Well why would you if you don’t have an AU?
@@juliomartinez9641 Obviously, I do.
How?
@@ConorBradshawVideo no idea. Maybe the waved it because I got it during Covid and never reinstated it is my guess.
Whenever people defend the Amex Platinum, I think of that The Office episode where they're trying to win that coupon book because its "Worth $15000!" 😂
The fact Amex Priority Pass doesn't get you into PP restaurants is a massive miss.
If you buy a one way flight, you are SOL with the platinum
great point
Just because you have primary CDW doesn't mean you're insurer will not find out about it, eventually, as they do pull reports.
🥤
1. Amex, but I have a CSP
2. Partners
3. Pick up Delta for Chase.
Do you use Max Rewards or Cardpointers App? If so, can you please do a comparison/review video? I’m stuck on deciding between the two 😅
I did the Delta reserve plus Sapphire reserve route. Pretty much covering every possible lounge. I'm pretty loyal to Delta and skyteam anyway
I have the same set up.
Most of my Chase points end up transferred to Hyatt
Waiting on a fence for the next CSP good welcome bonus. Player 2 for 195$ it's a nonsense, if will be reduced - maybe I'll change my mind.🥤
Sebby, please remind me if grandfathered Sapphire prevents you from getting modern Sapphire.
Good info and video like always Sebby. 🥤
learned something new.thank you for sharing.
🥤
Is it just me, or is AMEX no longer mentioning the annual $300 Equinox credit on their site? Is this a sign that the refresh is coming soon?
*For AMEX PLATINUM, does the companion card also count*
towards the $8,000 in the first six months to get the BONUS??
Chase has announced they are dropping the restaurant credit
🥤 I’m considering the Amex plat because I like travel and lounge access. And I think I can easily use some of the the credits to cover the yearly fee. However, I’m hearing the $695 fee is due for an increase in 2025. If this is the case would they include more perks? And I’m thinking of waiting for a better incentive than than 80,000 points currently offered. What’s your thoughts Sebby?
Just get BOTH. Ballers
Sure but aren’t ANA flights a better deal thru partner airlines? Haven’t flown to Japan yet
Any real life experience with using trip cancellation/interruption perks with either of these cards?
🥤 I have the Venture X i was torn between the X or the Plat. I decided on the X. Next card will be reserved.
For Amex, how much have any of you save under the premium economy special rate?
Does mortgage payment with the card counts towards the spend requirement?
Thanks
🥤thank for this! Going to stay with AMEX another year.
So that's my reasoning to keep both I guess.
I’m thinking of having a honeymoon in a year or so do you recommend Amex plat or chase reserve for a trip to Europe ?
Regarding Delta Sky Club access -- I keep reading that the one visit = 24-hour period is effective starting Feb 1, 2025. Can anyone confirm whether it is the case now? @AskSebby did it work on your Paris trip?
Capital one venture x!
I chose chase long ago and makes sense for me as i am military and they waive the fee. Would you be opposed to owning both if they are free?🥤🥤🥤
If they’re free I’d go for it, they can complement each other pretty good
CSR, FU, and southwest priority.
Sabby I remember you said your family is from HK , do you think you can make video and card from hk or comparing with us cards ,
Moving to HK soon
Sebby, I watched a video of yours from 5 years ago where you showed how superior the Sapphire was to the Platinum for airline travel protections. Have things changed here a lot or did I mishear you in this video?
It’s been 5 years 🙄
🥤Hey Sebby, can you still get multiple SUBs across AMEX platinum variants? I had the vanilla platinum for several years and recently cancelled it in favor of the Venture X + Ritz. However I am a Schwab customer and one day may benefit from the annual fee discount. I read recently you can only get the SUB for one platinum variant for life, but I don’t see anything definitive
how would these compare to the venture x??? Good video btw!
