31:05 it is very interesting how much this game does make you feel attached to your team. Its sort of like, having the option to make a bad environment, and overwork the pals, the ability to do that, makes it mean so much more when you dont do that.
Quick thing, from 200h gameplay time: Pal's Stamina is different from Players, and varies from Pal to Pal. You can sprint on your Direhowl, and when it runs out, you can sprint on foot while theirs recovers, then remount when you run out and recover.
The original trailers had Palworld running in Unity and did use store bought assets, but PP switched to Unreal Engine (literally just bc they hired a vet UE dev who had no unity exp), then had to make their own assets. Probably a better long term trade off. Though I do hope we get earlier features and art style from said earlier trailers as it was even more stylized. Ties the world together a little more then pseudo realistic maps meets cartoony monster violence, imho
I find it weird people call Palworld souless for the very reason that being Souless cash grabs is exactly the problem I have with current day Pokemon. The way each Pal Has something unique about its animation set or it's Ai behavior in the wild, There are so many layers. Beyond where they could have stopped.
I agree. If anything, it's Game Freak that's throwing passionless cash grabs with their pokemon games. I love the franchise but I hate the games. They need to step it up
Other than Soul-less being a silly buzzword, the game has the Hud of Fortnite with a similar art style, the upgrading of Ark, and the creature design of Pokémon. Nothing on the surface of it look original or anything more than a product riding on the creativity of greater studios. To see the things that makes the game exceptional, you got to play it and really pay attention. The expressiveness of the monsters is beyond stuff than even persona 5, SMT and other creature collector games. The gun animations are better than you expect. It surprisingly stable and content rich. There a lot of thoughtful ideas implemented for player enjoyment. It these smaller touches that give the soul, and the game full of them.
@@HighKnighter The fact that the ceo Personally went in to optimize the game's memory usage just before launch. Is not something you would see out of any major studio these days.
pokemon has been stale for the past decade. people have been crying out for some sort of pokemon mmo or 3d open world game for as long as I can remember (and I remember gen 1). The fact it has been almost 25 years since pokemon came to the us and just for comparison, we're at about 20 years since world of warcraft launched. every kid and young adult gamer in the mid 2000's DREAMED of some sort of mash-up between wow and pokemon. Remember Pokemon go? that came out almost 8 years ago and it took off like a rocket because so many pokemon players craved something different. Palworld hit that gold vein that game freak has been sleeping on completely by accident. I played it, got through most of the in-game content in 20-some hours, and have put it away for now, but am looking forward to new updates. Also, on that note, it might be my age showing, but I kind of miss the days where you bought a video game for 20-40 dollars, played the absolute heck out of it for a couple weeks to a month, beat it, and put it away, maybe to revisit it in a couple years on a slow day. I'm tired of 90% of games out there trying to be the only game you'll play for the next 5 years, usually by making it more grindy instead of genuine fun for the whole time.
I avoid live service games and stick to more traditional releases too. A good single player or couch co-op style experience can form memories that last a lifetime.
that's just it, my friends and I are big fans of the EDF series of games and can still laugh about stuff we did in them couch co-op years after the fact. no one except the terminally online cares about your 30 hour grind in the latest "open world survival craft mmo" that got you a hat with 3 horns instead of 2 and 3% better stats
You should've mentioned the Engraved in Myth track. It only plays during fights against the legendary pals, and perfectly reflects the importance of them.
It's amazing! I actually realllly love the beginning theme too. The soundtrack (and some fan made remixes too) are on Spotify. The memories created in this game flash through my mind whenever I hear them.
I used to gaslight myself with the newer games' graphics by thinking they were just trying to be as modest as possible, to make a humble statement that you don't need hyperrealistic grahics to make a good game and to pay respects to their roots of a simple 2D sprite artstyle. I do believe that a game doesn't need perfect graphics to be good and I can understand wanting to have a consistant artstyle, but obviously I don't thonk thats the case anymore. I do think the style of palsbeing more simple compared to the human and environment models clash a little, but maybe that's the intention if pals aren't part of the worldin the same way real animals are. Besides, maybe the pal models that have just flat textures for eyes and mouths will get updated someday to have more 3D form. The current flatness is isn't gamebreaking or a dealbreaker and it's the least of their concerns right now anyway. I don't mind less realistic or low-polygon graphics in games, but Pokémon graphics as of late feel so soulless and careless. It has this uncanny valley of effort and carelessness that's hard to describe. There's just enough of an upgrade from previous gens to notice but not enough to actually be good and I think part of that is from how untouchable the franchise has become, making it complacent. They'll get millions of dollars no matter how low quality it is, so wouldn't that mean putting in more effort for more quality than "needed" is a waste of money to them? That's the kind of soulless corporate giant logic that only comes about when they become untouchable.
You don't need hyperrealistic graphics, because "graphics" are simply the execution of the game's art direction. Technological fidelity *can* help with the execution depending on the art direction, but obviously it isn't always necessary; so it's always felt silly to me when people point to games like Minecraft or Shovel Knight saying that "graphics don't matter" just because they don't require high technological fidelity, the graphics obviously *do* matter because how those games look is a big part of why they're so charming. The early Pokemon games are a great example of that, Gens 2-5 look fantastic because the art direction is solid, and the execution of that art direction is tailored extremely well around each generation of hardware. The art direction of the Switch games wasn't necessarily a *terrible* foundation, but the execution is so haphazard that it's actively distracting and pulls you out of the experience. Palworld is maybe a bit more generic in terms of art direction, but the execution is done significantly better compared to Game Freak's offerings.
The reason palworld doesn't have evolution is they take more inspiration from games like Dragon Quest Monsters(Dragon Warrior Monsters) with there Breeding Mechanic(Was later changed to changed to Synthesis).
That's pretty cool, especially since that was also an influence on Pokémon itself. I haven't played any Dragon Quest games yet so I totally missed that connection.
2:02 the seamless "GldSrc Cavern" popup got me bloody cackling lmao fantastic video essay all around, I didnt know much about Palworld so it was fascinating to hear about its finer nuances
You forgot one thing about Legends Arceus- you can mass release Pokémon to get the items to enhance the Pokémon you keep. That is one thing I kind of hope they add to Palworld- the ability to mass release (or condense) to get Pal Souls easier.
Yeah imagine having a special extra base like not a base but a "camp", They could do enriching work benefiting the Fatherbase and It would make a really great SOLUTION to all our problems.....
I gotta say this is a spectacularly well put together video essay, especially from a small channel. The editing in place is subdued and not constantly in your face like a lot of newer channels trying to replicate the comedic timing of a short form content. The pacing of it is also abnormally good, as each point is given enough time to breathe while not lingering or repeating things ad nauseum. Although I really do hope Palworld takes full adavntage of being early access instead of cut and running, I've already put about 60 hours into a 30 dollar game and enjoyed it the entire way, so no matter what happens concerning the continued development of the game, I've already gotten my moneys worth with it. Thanks for making this video, I'll be looking forward to whatever you end up uploading in the future!
31:20 It's a little bit of an exploit, but there is a way to "quick revive" KO'd pals. Pals on the base who are KO'd for any reason can be picked up by other pals and thrown into a bed to rest, instantly reviving them and letting them quickly recover HP while they sleep. You can just put your KO'd pal onto the work force (which unceremoniously dumps their body in front of the pal box) and one of your other worker pals will take care of the rest!
I hope for not only Palworld's success the emergence of even more creature capture games that go big, go 3D, and beat Pokemon at it's own game. GF hasn't had a real rival in decades and Palworld, while a good start, won't put a dent into GF's pocketbooks enough. A large part of Palworld's success is that they emulated Pokemon's art style which they can't copyright. That immediately made Palworld stand out and draw people in with the familiar. Other creature capture games try too hard to look completely different from Pokemon that they wind up just being in its shadow. Pixel games are cute but not what the general audience is looking to play and Temtem looked 3 generations behind in their 3D models.
IMO it's the turn-based gameplay that most Pokemon wannabes try to copy. That is the BIG reason as to why most monster catcher games just don't get peoples attention. If the success of Palworld sets a trend on NOT making a turn-based monster catcher game, THAT may entice TPC on releasing something close to what Palworld did. Palworld's sales figure is more than enough market data for TPC to take 'risks'.
What a find. A well thought out review of a game that really needed one is just what I've been hunting for. And it's from a fresh face to boot! You're earning yourself a sub friend.
25:44 heck yeah! Having your flying mount get obliterated by a gang with rocket launchers in the desert and having to walk it back out on foot and find a new fast travel spot is so desolate and epic. Makes for memorable gaming experiences - the event actually becomes part of your story and adds to the immersive experience.
you can really tell that modern pokemon devs have absolutely no clue about gaming, this occurance might as well mark the beginning of the end of the entire franchise
Can't tell if they don't understand because they don't really try but for sure they don't even try with their games because there wasn't any competition in the market up until now and the (presumed) monster games that'll try to follow palworlds success
I have this long running theory that Pokémon fans don’t want a better alternative to pokemon so much they don’t care about any alternative “pokemon clone”
This is exactly why many of my friends "hate" Palworld. They won't even try it because they are afraid it will hurt Pokémon. I told them that I don't think anything could kill Pokémon and IF it did it would be totally deserved.
I don't think Palworld will simply be a quick flash and gone. The cult following is strong (and I'm right there with everyone) if anything. I actually really love the Pal designs more than the recent Pokémon gen. They've really captured my heart while I was capturing them.
31:20 There is. Deploy them out into your base (replacing a working pal, if you have to) and they'll be unconscious, but any pal with Handiwork stat will go into Rescue mode and carry your downed pal to a bed, where they gain at least one HP by sleeping and go from Incapacitated to Major Injury to Minor Injury to No Injury, but as long as they have a sliver of HP the message on the top left will probably say they're "in good condition!" despite the little orange injury banner. Edit: As someone else says lower down (though I haven't tested it), Viewing Cage revives pals instantly.
You bring up a good point about the gameplay loop designed to keep players playing. It's kind of why I am not a big fan of so many games not being ale to have a pause feature. I get it; there are some games and instances where the devs can't impliment a pause feature even if they wanted to like a multiplayer server and the lack of a pause means that the addiction cycle of seeking gratification or reward for an action can continue its stimulation that keeps someone playing for hours on end. However, at some point, I do think it can feel disrespectful of the player. To me, not allowing for some means of a break suggests that the producers who made this choice don't have faith that you'll ant to return to the game on your own or that they rely on this addiction feedback to maintain engagement. This is why I hardly play video games; my arthritis doesn't allow forme to play for long periods of time, even if engaging gameplay or addictive feedback made me want to, which imo leads me to not want to chance engaging in the first place if a game doesn't allow me to have human limits and needs. It's a big reason why I've played mostly Pokémon games up to this point: the turn-based gameplay is easier on my hands. I don't need every game to have a pause button or to all be arthritis friendly. I am just sharing my opinion on the gameplay loop in modern games.
I found it cute how you refered to foxparks as Mozilla firefox which is exactly what I named mine after. It just seemed too perfect not to 😄 He was my first pal ever and though Mozilla is such an obvious joke name I got so attached to them haha Very charming video, I hope it gets out to more people.
I love how Pals don't undergo metamorphosis. I preferred Marill to Azumarill and Sentret to Furret for cuteness, and always thought both Dragonair and Dragonite were wonderful designs but had no business being the same creature. A lot of Pokemon advancement outside of the likes of caterpillars turning into butterflies or moths is just some combination of "it gets bigger" , "it gets uglier" , or "the tiny bobble head baby was added to give you something to advance from into its actual base form" . There are _some_ Pokemon "evolution" concepts I liked, but I think way too many Pokemon did that which didn't need to. I also think only about half or maybe a quarter of the creature designs in a given generation of Pokemon are good, and the chaff of needless evolutions or pre-evolutions often make up the bulk of my "Why did this need to be here?" lists. Especially cross-generation retroactive trash like the babies from Generations 2 and 4 or evolutions like Magmortar, Electivire, and Roserade. Roselia was a perfect little rose monster, and Roserade's roses are objectively worse looking in terms of art because the games continuously look more plastic and artificial with each iteration of the style. I wouldn't mind a couple critters here or there permanently transforming into a stronger form under certain conditions, but turning a Beegarde into an Elizabee should take rare and hard to find royal jelly and not just combat experience. I think _temporary_ transformations would be even cooler, for the most part.
I agree with everything on your post except for temporary transformation. Mega evolution was one of the worst mechanics in pokemon and I don't want it anywhere near my pals. I wanna ride jetragon as jetragon.
22:16 You can also use tools/weapons whilst mounted by holding the aim button (and reload weapons as normal). Really, the only thing you *can’t* do on a mount is open certain menus like the palbox interface or npc dialogue.
You might want to rethink your position on the Music, as I'm not sure if you've gotten that far yet, but. The Legendary Pal theme "Engraved in Myth" is an absolute bop that as a Pokemon Gen 1 Old Timer myself is comparable to some of the great Legendary Pokemon tracks. It's a theme that will catch you off guard upon stumbing into Jetragon, Frostallion or Paladius and Necromus.
@@BlueChessboardRook Fur-st Contact really grew on me. It's such a different take on the combat state bgm you hear in Pokemon. I think the seamless encounter with the Pals is the root of it's composition.
Bro, engraved in myth is already haunting me for days now. I swear I still can hear the echo of that strong choir near end of the track even when I tried to think something else.
Engraved myth is great but "Bosses" gives "The End of a Thought" Vibes to me. God I wish Midi Music came back Orchestra music just lacks Power behind it.
Another excellent video man. I haven't gotten to play Palworld yet but your discussion was very thoughtful. Happy to see your channel is starting to pick up subs and more views as well!
How I see Palworld, this is just my opinion, it's sort of parody BUT at the same time makers have passion for it and do things with players in mind. Like progress and overall mechanics are fun. I think it's good that pokémon company gets slap on their fingers. The latest two games and their pokémon designs have been horrible and lazy.
Ok, I wont defend the state SV was released in, but I'll definitely defend the designs as they're still 1 of the best parts of Pkmn to this day just like the music.
@@lipika2841 I liked older generations, but some of these new just are so lazy. Like the mouse who "evolves" and just have same kind of mouses holding hands. Or that pokémon who is literally like olive etc. Like cmon pokémon company, you can do better. I don't defend palworld designs either, you can clearly see mix and match designs, but as I said, palworld feels more like a parody with their designs (like that first boss and her pal looks like that one sword/shield boss and their pokémon). Pokémon music is good, palworld music is kinda forgettable, which I don't mind 'cause I have a good reason to play my own music on bg.
I have been catching an unhealthy amount of Cremis and Chikipi. The chickens will come home to roost, and the Fluff of my armies shall lightly smush my enemies!
At this point, they have added the ability to warp back to your nearest base from anywhere other than inside dungeons. But, it's not free. You have to unlock it in the ancient tech tree. And, it's a consumable you have to craft so it's not just unlock it and use it as much as you want. It's unlock it and craft one for every time you use it. It requires Dazzi clouds, electric organs, and ancient civ part. So not too expensive, but not cheap per se either. That stuff isn't hard to get, but it's not readily available either.
I have been keeping up with the game although I am not actively playing it. Seems like they are doing a good job, having an emergency fast travel option like that will make it easier to deal with raids. I plan on making another video about Palworld once it reaches 1.0, assuming that happens.
Honestly, there should be a Pal that can make electric organs when placed in farms, just like how Flambelle can make fire organs, specially because a lot of new items in the Sakurajima update requires plenty of electric organs. I know you can buy them from the wandering merchant in the small settleman, but you will most likely not have enough money to buy enough so you might as well just go to the Dessicated Desert and farm.
That's fair . I play hard mode and I like the stress of exploring and getting lost needing to find a fast travel point before I die and drop all my stuff and pals . It makes it slightly more hardcore and not a cake walk the whole time . More exciting
@@drewdabrew4745 They've also added a pal now that does that as his partner skill. I've not used it, I hear it's a very long cool down though. Dogen or whatever his name is. The new fire type that some kind of dog sage or monk.
For quick pal recovery just put them in worker slot in your base. The other pal will put them to bed and revive right away. Keep in mind that you need a pal that awake at you base to do that.
I hate to be the one to say it, but gamefreak just go "doesn't matter if it looks scuffed, kids will just look for the creatures"(marketed to children) Palword is basically just pokemon marketed to adults and survival crafter players. Gamefreak know parents will give in to their kids begging, while savvy adults see the declining quality. This may be one reason for the major differences and is only one observation out of many to consider, despite it being an obvious one.
You are right. That being said, the fact that it is a "kid's game" or a "family game" doesn't give them a pass. The Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin games on the Switch are aimed at the same demographics and they're still good enough to get "Game of the Year" nominations from adult fans and gaming publications alike. They chose to go all out with Mario Wonder and Tears of the Kingdom by polishing them as much as possible even though they were going to sell well no matter what.
My main issue with Palworld (outside of it being a survival-crafting game) is the combat. I like that you can fight beside your Pals and ride them, or perform some kind of tag-team option with them (like Foxsparks' flamethrower), but outside of that, I hate that you have very little control over what moves your Pal performs. They have a bad habit of using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to catch a Pal, and not using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to kill a Pal. The AI is also horrible in that they'll frequently get stuck on terrain, or completely miss attacks often. I feel like I'm doing much more of the work sometimes during fights. On top of that, I really don't like the lack of evolution. It basically makes early game Pals get far outclassed by more late game Pals. Sure, there are some ways to make sure the early game Pals can keep up, but it requires a lot of work and time when I could just, ya know, catch a more powerful Pal instead. There are other issues I have too, like the overly simplistic type chart, 3 moves instead of 4 for each Pal, and 5 Pals on a team instead of 6, but the other issues I feel play a bigger role into why I find the combat lacking.
I get what you are trying to say, but 1) You CAN choose which moves you want your Pal to use and which one you don't and while the AI still needs some improvement, you have to take into consideration the cooldown of your attacks cuz the stronger it is, the longer it will be. The strategy here is that you have at least one decent move with less cooldown as possible so your Pal won't be defenseless during a fight. 2) The lack of evolution complain doesn't make too much sense when as you progress the game, you naturally get stronger Pals. Hell, if you actually put some time and effort, you can actually get some end game juggernauts like Astegon and Shadowbeak, but that's mostly recommended when you are in the mid game as you have access to level 3 kindling Pals like Blazehowl and Ragnahawk and preparing Breeding cakes doesn't take too long. 3) The overly simplistic type chart is actually at the game favor, as it makes every type balanced and even having some perks like grass moves greatly slowing down your opponent with the vine effect or some Dark moves being able to poison your oponent, unlike the type chart in Pokemon where lot of types like Ice and Rock are very shitty while some like Fairy are very OP. As for the rest, I think you are making an unfair comparation as naturally you shouldn't expect stuff like this to be exactly like Pokemon. Sometimes, for better or worse, you need to adapt to the game mechanic which is why other games in the same genre like Yokai Watch are different in this regard.
I kinda understand what you're saying... but at the same time. I have to disagree. In Pokemon, I feel the majority of the time, I can just tap the A button mindlessly without thinking, and I will basically win. There's very little moments where I actually have to focus, because Pokemon is so easy, it's kind of insulting at times. The main game is basically elemental rock paper scissors; if you have a Super effective move; you basically will win unless the Devs specifically set things up to be slightly harder (things like Cynthia, where the challenge is high because her team is actually competent and makes you think). Because so many trainers in Pokemon just use 1 type; as long as you build a team with coverage, you will pretty much never lose a fight, and if you do... you can just try again. Palworld meanwhile, makes Combat more freeform and dynamic. You yourself dictate how combat goes, but because you are the primary commander, if you get KO'd, you instantly fail the battle. This is balanced with you having one of the highest DPS' but also being the most important to protect. Your Pals, are more or less supporters who can offer a distraction, fight up close to draw fire, offer supporting fire; or allow team up moves for massive firepower. Some even buff your attacks with different elements. The Combat is also more universal, since while Pals can only know 3 Moves, you can change them on the fly, and even during combat (if you find a safe spot) and all Pals can learn all moves via the fruits you find. Which majorly helps with engagements. The simplified Type Chart helps Palworld; since Pokemon's type chart seems built on the "I thought it would be fun" idea rather than a balanced idea. Many types are undercooked and not worth using; while others are OP as heck. Each type in Palworld is neutral except the weakness cases; but outside of combat, each element of Pal also dictates how useful they are for different jobs around the base. The Pals value extends beyond just gruntwork in your party, which is also a major reason I like Palworld more. Instead of jamming all the Pals into a PC Box, I have most of them aiding with construction and building things. In comparison, most Pokemon just sit in the PC collecting dust.
@@kazoorion7993 1. I know you can pick what moves your Pal has in their moveset, but you can't dictate which of their moves they use at any given time. Sure, you can change their moves at any time, even during combat, but that's not feasible most of the time. It'd be nice if there was a way to temporarily disable some of your Pals' moves to avoid accidently KOing Pals you don't want to. 2. I probably should've elaborated more on this point, but the main reason I dislike the lack of evolution is that it means you can't form any kind of attachment to your Pals in the same way you can with your Pokemon. In Pokemon, ones you catch early on can be viable for the entire playthrough, but in Palworld early game Pals you catch get quickly outclassed by newer Pals you find. It's admittedly a more personal point. Palworld's lack of evolution isn't wrong, per say, but I just simply prefer Pokemon's system in this case. 3. In theory, you're right, but there are 2 types in Palworld that aren't balanced; fire and neutral. Fire is the only type in the game that's strong against 2 different types (grass and ice). Meanwhile, neutral is objectively the worst type since it's weak to dark, and not strong against anything. Hell, neutral doesn't even have it's own status effects or side benefits (like how normal types in Pokemon have larger than usual movepools to make up for the type kinda sucking otherwise).
@@RednekGamurz 1) While that sounds good on paper, it would become less prudent as you progress the game due to the need to keep up with the most powerful enemies and which Pals you want to use when each encounter. You can still choose which move you want your Pal to use if they are rideable tho. 2) I can see why and it's a very valid point. No harm done. 3) I think it's more about how residual damage works as burn (and poison) are needed when dealing with some of the strongests bosses in the games (Legendaries and Raid bosses one included). I would say the biggest problem with Palworld's type charting would be the lack of options of cercain types like Electric, Ice and even Water (this one being the opposite problem of Pokemon as there are way too many Water type Pokemon lol), as well as the overabundance of Dark type Pals, which just worsened with the Sakurajima update. The latter isn't a big deal since them being able to keep doing their task in your base during night without having to make extra beds for them or wasting an entire slot for the Nocturnal passve for them, but it makes me wish there were more Pals that had a type that really needs more of them, even if it's a sub species. Of course a lot of these problems can be solved via future updates so it's up for us to wait and give them constructive critiques and/or tips and wait.
Nicely covered. I like the points and observations you made. and yeah, looking back pokemon really has been downhill for a while. it feels like they've been unrivaled in the creature catcher for so long they got lazy. but no one was able to rise up...until now. Will Palworld replace them? not likely....but Palworld has shown pokemon can bleed. And hopefully either this cut draws enough blood for pokemon to wake up, draws enough blood for a different predator to come and replace it.
Hurts? Draws blood? Did palworld hurt Pokémon’s sales numbers? My understanding is that Pokémon is currently on an upward trend from a prior low. Just cuz palworld had some success doesn’t have any negative indication for game freak. Just cause you’re happy another game was able to ride on the success of Pokémon doesn’t mean game freak is bothered by it in any way. In fact, the Japanese entertainment industry as a whole is notorious for being out of touch and ignorant of anything outside of the Japanese market.
@@campomambo It didnt hurt pokemon's sales. pokemon did that to itself card sales are in decline due to end of lock down, and the controversy of 2023 minors US National championship (the person winning 2-0 got disqualified right as he won game 3 because "he didnt give his prefered pronoun to the judge 2 hours agp" VG Tournaments are rather unpopular atm after the disaster that was Japan Pokemon Worlds where 80% of North Americans, 60% of european, and 30% of Korean players all got disqualified due to a change in what pokemon were legal or not (they were legal in home regions, but in jp they decided no they not anymore) and SV, besides being the first game in pokemon history to be FORCED to give refunds, has flat out stagnated at 23million sales (this is when they had to start giving refunds, and they have refused to announce updated sales after. so either they never got above this point, or they never recovered this after the refunds nintendo forced them to give), and is STILL being hammered left and right as a poorly made game rushed by greed. Palworld made pokemon bleed, by showing that pokemon fans ARE WILLING to play other creature catchers. they aren't blindly loyal like during Temtem or Yokai Watch. They are aware pokemon games are in a bad state and are looking for other games to give them what they want. Pokemon bleeding just means that they don't have as secure a fanbase as they had in past years when the playerbase was reliably positive to them. Now the playerbase is generally neutral to negative. and lastly....the anime......which STILL has not released in english at all released in france in december and has seen viewership drop like a rock from its opening. and even the japanese release of the anime is starting to show signs of stagnation as JP tubers talk about how the characters arent growing. Pokemon Direct is coming up in 10 days. we'll see if pokemon has a plan to regain its fandom's trust. or if fans will start branching out even more. tldr; Palworld making Pokemon Bleed just means that Palworld showed that now is a good time for creature catcher competitors to try their luck, as Pokemon Fan's loyalty is shakey
Pokémon Legends Arceus is my favorite Pokémon game but it felt unfinished. I'm glad that Palworld expanded on that formula, plus I love survival games as much as monster taming games so I wouldn't have asked for better.
glad to see people love this game so much i was a fan of Pokémon since the early 2000's and yes ever game for the last however many they released the past 10 years are crap or just updated version of old games and every time they take away features and make the Pokémon do less like you know interact with literally anything or even give them personalities. so, I'm so happy when this came out what sold me was the fox spark cooking on the fire and just the personalities of all the pals i was like man can't wait to see what other details or interactions are in this and yup love it have played like 30 hrs. so far and i think infinitely better then Pokémon because it actually utilizes pals as actual livening breathing things with personality's and movement, interactions they all interact and do stuff differently not just oh look you can feed them curry and all have the same reaction and spray a 2d hose on them then brush a 2d brush on them oh look it kicked a ball like the other 30 kick the ball and the drama around the game can be summed up as don't care, who tf asked , stop crying it's a fun game.
I'm very mixed on the lack of Evolution in palworld. On one hand, I wish i could improve my early game pals into stronger versions of themselves, turning like my Foxparks into a more powerful fox, or even evolve it into a Wixen or something so I could keep using it well into the endgame rather than replacing it... but at the same time, the POINT of Palworld is that pals are expendable, so it makes sense.
You actually can improve your pals through breeding (to get different combinations of passive traits) and through condensing (to improve their stats); the pals just don’t change their appearance. You can also use the skill fruits to give pals new attacks and change what attacks are active at any time. As far as late game is concerned, there’s a guy who bred and optimized a Lamball that can take on all five tower bosses and all the legendaries, so if you’re willing to put in the hours you can make any pal viable late-game.
people still playing main game Pokemon? I mostly play community mods or actual games from third parties that make bigger and better Pokemon games with insane story
That was really good. I enjoyed hearing your commentary on how much more engaging Palworld was that made it a smash hit. Make sure to bob and weave some information about Pokemon and Palworld together in the future because my idiot brain made me forget something you were talking about 5 minutes later, lol. I also appreciate the pro-competition message at the end.
Its simple, Nintendo/Gamefreak doens thave to polish their games, it is more lucrative to crap out a lackluster new mainline-title game every 1-2year, just to stay in peoples minds. The money doenst come from the games or anime itself, it comes from all the merch they sell due to the exposure via these mediums...
If it was up to me, id take neutral out of the type chart (normal isnt strong or weak against anything) and id make fire weak to dark (2 strong, 2 weak)
Time for gamefreak to relinquish the Pokémon IP to game companies that actually care about their video game development. They’re incompetent and aren’t able to improve in time - which is embarassing considering they’ve had a 20+ year head start to give everyone the ultimate gaming experience. Instead they chose to be greedy and CHEAP.
ill start by saying that i diidnt grow up with pokemon games, i grew up with theyre predicesors and betters games like final fantasy 7, final fantasy tactics, and legend of the dragoon, games that genuinly reached the very peak of what rpg's could be at that time and even some years after, pokemon is whats called a beginners rpg, light on mechanics story and characters that could overwelm the toddlers that played them, sadly pokemon never grew up with those todlers... and even sadder, by the sales numbers of there most recent and worst games... they never had to grow up... the fans will eat the slurry regardless of quality... i dont know whats more depressing, that gamefreak will never have to try... or that the fans will never care to force them to try.
As someone who did grow up with pokemon, you hit the nail on the head with its problems, for me personally at least: the games and world didn't grow up with me. I loved everything about the world from its characters to the cute pokemon as a kid, but as I grew and they stayed the same I moved away and moved on. I bought Pokemon let's go Eevee as well as the diamond and pearl remake more for nostalgia reasons than any other when they released. Playing those two felt like my way of saying goodbye to the world of pokemon one last time since I know it's forever stuck in the past. I said for years that the best way for pokemon to really be a success again would be to grow up with its core audience, and palworld proved that to me.
Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game ever, I played it for the first time when I was 10 or 11 and it definitely overwhelmed me! Struggling to see the credits of that game for years is one of my formative gaming memories. I remember being very excited for Pokémon Conquest back when that came out since it was in the same genre and being a little bit disappointed with it even though it was a pretty good spin-off title. I don't think all hope is lost for Pokémon, there is a hint of passion in Legends Arceus that just isn't being given enough nutrition and time to bloom into something great.
Thinking about art. Wasn't there someone whom successfully submitted a toilet seat to some form of art expo under a pseudonym as part of a critique/protest about what art is? The one thing about art, it is almost always up to the viewer to define what art is, because it is nebulous by nature, defying attempts to try and objectively define what is or isn't art.
its actually far above average for an up-and-coming channel like this. the channels that blow up to 100k+ views in a single video are the very, very rare exceptions (survivorship bias) Rook thought it'd take 18 videos or so to get up to 200 subs, now it seems like it'll only take just these first three
"I don't think Palworld will beat Pokemon." As of today, Palworld has more players across Steam and XBox than Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, the best-selling game in the franchise.
And? The amount of current players means nothing if PKMN continues as normal. They sell gigantic amounts of merchandise, they'll continue to release profitable games, the TCG and competitive scene is one of the best on the market, etc etc etc. Something good that can coexist with it means nothing at all.
@@Big_Dai Pokémon is going to sell well no matter what, I don't think even one or two viable competitors would change that. It's firmly rooted in global pop culture. Palworld (probably) won't scale up to become a mega franchise like Pokémon is, but its success definitely won't go unnoticed by the industry at large. There is a demand for quality monster collector games on several major platforms that isn't being met and everyone, including Nintendo and Game Freak, just saw proof of that.
"Decline" doesn't mean "commercial failure" here. It's referring to a decline in the quality of the media, which you can't really measure with sales metrics and profit figures.
Pokémon isn’t in decline. It’s more than just the games, it’s a house hold name. One of the biggest ips with stuff everywhere probably coming in second to Disney and any of their ips. Palworld is now finished and people moved on, especially after the reveal of Pokémon legends az and the return of mega evolution
How is Palworld finished when it's still on early access and they have already started they will announced news about their first big update during Summer Game Fest?
"It's massive, so it can't fail." This is the problem with Pokemon. I don't think you've realized, that when something ends up like this, and has 0 competition, there is also 0 reason to improve the thing, because "They'll buy it anyway." The argument regarding the merchandise also makes 0 sense, as the Pokemon Company regularly drops tons of merch NOT tied to a new generation all the time. And considering Pokemon's popularity, they are raking in a fortune off plushies, trading cards and the Anime alone... so why justify them rushing and releasing the games unfinished if the gravy train is still pouring money in whether the company has a new game or not? Also, Palworld is far from done. The game is still in Beta, and just announced a free content update with a ton of new features; new Pals, new Construction kits, new items, a new island to explore and even new gameplay mechanics. Pokemon also did this in S/V, but that was DLC you had to pay for, and the new content was exclusively restricted to the new area.
Palworld will be here for the next 5-10yrs. Assuming they do not make a Palworld 2 or extend the franchise in some sort of way. Pokemom HAD it when they made PL-Arcues, then dropped the ball. Palworld is here to stay and I am so glad I got AC. LETS GOOOOOO!! 🦾🦾
Lets all be honest here. Even if you love Palworld over Pokemon. We wouldn't cling to this game so much if Gamefreak didn't at least try to make more incredible games. And Nintendo is just as responsible. I was led to believe that a rushed game would be awful forever compared to a game that took time, and passion. But here are the executives rushing these releases for a quick buck.
I wouldn't say that, though I do believe that the numbers would be lower. pal world is a diffrent game from pokemon. And would have still attracted a lot of people who like other aspects of the game. Or people like me who don't like or care for the turn based combat.
Maybe to some degree, but I think if that were fully the case, games like Coraemon or Cassette Beasts would be doing a lot better than they have been. I think part of what makes Palworld stand out in comparison is that it doesn't just seek to recreate a status quo like the other two games, but instead evolve past it in a far more ambitious way. And that would still shine through even if Game Freak weren't in such a dire state; you can still see the preserved optimism in the comments of Palworld's initial trailer back from 2021.
Disagree. I outgrew pokemon over ten years ago. I have good memories with it but I moved on. Palworld is something different entirely and that's what I like about it. If I wanted pokemon, I'd play pokemon.
Remember Gamefreak is grandfathered in despite nintendo owning 2/3rds of pokemon. Nintendo has Creatures and TPC Gamefreak is an outsider Thirdparty but due to the unique situation of Pokemon as a franchise cant be boot or bought by nintendo. Gamefreak is litterally the only thing stopping nintendo from devving pokemon in hour or getting other companies to do it for them. The Fact Bandai accidentally in an interview told us the true Asset library of Pokemon during the new SNAP games dev time. was FUCKING MASSIVE to the point "oh we didnt make any assets.... Yes they(Creatures.inc) had provided everything we could have ever needed.... Animations were even done before we got called in." Remember this is BEFORE DEXIT and the Bullshit of New animations for SWSH was why they cut alot of pokemon and moves. Effing New Snap looks amazing and had hyped SWSH up. Just done with Gamefreak apologists. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM.
31:05 it is very interesting how much this game does make you feel attached to your team. Its sort of like, having the option to make a bad environment, and overwork the pals, the ability to do that, makes it mean so much more when you dont do that.
Right if my Pal's bones are broken I can either butcher it, do nothing, or give it medicine and pet it. Each choice has its own outcome
The way Pals are animated + sound makes them feel more "alive" than Pokémon feel. Pengullet sleepwalks and carries objects on its head
28:47 if Rook thinks Foxsparks' weapon is humorous, wait till he discovers Tocotoco
Quick thing, from 200h gameplay time:
Pal's Stamina is different from Players, and varies from Pal to Pal.
The way each Pal Has something unique about its animation set or it's Ai behavior in the wild,
There are so many layers.
@@11Megane23 What do you expect when your game is made by a conglomerate four companies?
@@HighKnighterthe game itself is fun. However people sometimes feels like its a Soulless cashgrab because of how unoriginal it is
Great video.
First time seeing a video from you, but I can tell you are really competent about editing and such.
Another alternative to creature catching is breeding, which might be the most expansive mechanic of this version of the game
pokemon has been stale for the past decade. people have been crying out for some sort of pokemon mmo or 3d open world game for as long as I can remember (and I remember gen 1).
The pizza party is already in the game to some extent, you can just produce pizza for them to eat instead of berries.
Lmao
2:02 the seamless "GldSrc Cavern" popup got me bloody cackling lmao
fantastic video essay all around, I didnt know much about Palworld so it was fascinating to hear about its finer nuances
Remember also that Palworld is early access so maybe once the game is given a full release you could make a new video? Really enjoyed this one.
Don’t get me wrong palworld is great gameplay wise but pokemon’s merchandisabillity will give them decades to catch up.
It's not the Devs, the company itself is has no clue.
Dude I think you're getting over your head. Pokemon isn't goigg down anytime soon nor will Palworld destroy Pokemon
Can't tell if they don't understand because they don't really try but for sure they don't even try with their games because there wasn't any competition in the market up until now and the (presumed) monster games that'll try to follow palworlds success
God I hope so
I love this thumbnail. It's mesmerizing.
I have this long running theory that Pokémon fans don’t want a better alternative to pokemon so much they don’t care about any alternative “pokemon clone”
So Stockholm Syndrome.
This is exactly why many of my friends "hate" Palworld. They won't even try it because they are afraid it will hurt Pokémon. I told them that I don't think anything could kill Pokémon and IF it did it would be totally deserved.
I am a Pokemon fan since Pokemon Red/Blue and I want Palworld to hurt Pokemon lol. Palworld is way more fun
"not allowing for some means of a break" is usually found in games where its not possible lol what?
I found it cute how you refered to foxparks as Mozilla firefox which is exactly what I named mine after. It just seemed too perfect not to 😄 He was my first pal ever and though Mozilla is such an obvious joke name I got so attached to them haha
Very charming video, I hope it gets out to more people.
love your essay, well thought out points contrasted between the two franchises
There are some good tracks for sure, maybe it will grow on me.

I stopped playing with the 3DS games and yeah.. it’s like every gen after that has blended together with bad designs

You can also just go to sleep with the incapacitated pal in your party, and they'll bbe back to full health once you awaken.
Very well put, kudos
I hate to be the one to say it, but gamefreak just go "doesn't matter if it looks scuffed, kids will just look for the creatures"(marketed to children)
Palword is basically just pokemon marketed to adults and survival crafter players.
Thanks for the great video! I look forward to more from you!
Observing Cage revives pals instantly
FR?!
Yoo my ace is a cremis too! They were my first shiny!
I get what you are trying to say, but
1) You CAN choose which moves you want your Pal to use and which one you don't and while the AI still needs some improvement, you have to take into consideration the cooldown of your attacks cuz the stronger it is, the longer it will be.
@@campomambo It didnt hurt pokemon's sales. pokemon did that to itself
card sales are in decline due to end of lock down, and the controversy of 2023 minors US National championship (the person winning 2-0 got disqualified right as he won game 3 because "he didnt give his prefered pronoun to the judge 2 hours agp"
VG Tournaments are rather unpopular atm after the disaster that was Japan Pokemon Worlds where 80% of North Americans, 60% of european, and 30% of Korean players all got disqualified due to a change in what pokemon were legal or not (they were legal in home regions, but in jp they decided no they not anymore)
and SV, besides being the first game in pokemon history to be FORCED to give refunds, has flat out stagnated at 23million sales (this is when they had to start giving refunds, and they have refused to announce updated sales after. so either they never got above this point, or they never recovered this after the refunds nintendo forced them to give), and is STILL being hammered left and right as a poorly made game rushed by greed.
Now the playerbase is generally neutral to negative.
and lastly....the anime......which STILL has not released in english at all
released in france in december and has seen viewership drop like a rock from its opening.
and even the japanese release of the anime is starting to show signs of stagnation as JP tubers talk about how the characters arent growing.
Scarlet and Violet were the worst Pokémon games yet- and might be the worst games I’ve played in general.
You can reset an unconscious pal by placing it in the viewing cage then taking it back out.
Great video!
I'm flattered you'd name a pokemon after me
Pokemon has gone too high for long enough
Same here but we still got plenty of people who never left the reservation of Mainline unmodded Pokémon games.
Technically there is no Pizza Party option, but I'm pretty sure there already are foods which increase SAN or make SAN decrease more slowly.
Such as pizza
@@zealander. Pizza takes a lot of effort to make, but at least it's lighter on the workload than a single cake.
If it was up to me, id take neutral out of the type chart (normal isnt strong or weak against anything) and id make fire weak to dark (2 strong, 2 weak)
I hope this can lead to a 2nd game that is just way better with more unique creatures.

Oh, I'm so used to playing solo, I was like how do you have Ryptro AND Wixen out. But then I saw you had a buddy with you .
A fair video. 👍
That sub count is criminal
its actually far above average for an up-and-coming channel like this. the channels that blow up to 100k+ views in a single video are the very, very rare exceptions (survivorship bias)
Rook thought it'd take 18 videos or so to get up to 200 subs, now it seems like it'll only take just these first three

GameFreak is resting their laurels for too long
"I don't think Palworld will beat Pokemon." As of today, Palworld has more players across Steam and XBox than Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, the best-selling game in the franchise.
The world is kinda cool sometimes.
Nice vid 👍
Ragnahawk looks better than any bird Pokemon does IMO.

Nothing says "decline" like ten million sales in three days...
"Decline" doesn't mean "commercial failure" here. It's referring to a decline in the quality of the media, which you can't really measure with sales metrics and profit figures.
@@jacobgutierrez9642 Guess it's confusing wording then. I would've assumed it was the way I took it since the title uses the word "success."
If we're going by sales, the decline was Black and White + Black and White 2. They came back from that quickly though.
Also, emphasizing the sales numbers of palworld signals that decline is a reference to the sales numbers of Pokémon as well
Emerald was my first Pokemon game too
So where is the Pokemon declining?
the quality. just LOOK at Legends Arceus or Scarlet/Violet and tell me there's no decline lol
You guys forgot smt exist 😅
SMT franchise way older than Pokemon
SMT has a completely different appeal.
No one cares about SMT lol
Ugly a$$ games
Um, you do NOT drop the pals you were carrying when you die, just your items
In hard mode you do. And the devs give you the freedom to configure grindiness and difficulty of the game, which is another W.
@darkomiku8902 yeah I realize that now lol.
"It's massive, so it can't fail."
This is the problem with Pokemon.
I want to see it succeed too. There will definitely be a follow-up video when the game comes out of early access.
Absolutely wrong. I love palworld regardless of pokemon.
And I know some people who never cared about pokemon who are loving the $#!T out of palworld.
