Building a Legacy: The 8-Bit Rise of Castlevania
A detailed retrospective of Castlevania, Vampire Killer, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse with a focus on how the series' game mechanics and design philosophy evolved as the series progressed. I also touch on the perplexing localization of the series and the many differences between Castlevania III's NES and Famicom releases.

    At this point, they have added the ability to warp back to your nearest base from anywhere other than inside dungeons. But, it's not free. You have to unlock it in the ancient tech tree. And, it's a consumable you have to craft so it's not just unlock it and use it as much as you want. It's unlock it and craft one for every time you use it. It requires Dazzi clouds, electric organs, and ancient civ part. So not too expensive, but not cheap per se either. That stuff isn't hard to get, but it's not readily available either.

I know you can buy them from the wandering merchant in the small settleman, but you will most likely not have enough money to buy enough so you might as well just go to the Dessicated Desert and farm.

      "It's massive, so it can't fail." This is the problem with Pokemon. I don't think you've realized, that when something ends up like this, and has 0 competition, there is also 0 reason to improve the thing, because "They'll buy it anyway." The argument regarding the merchandise also makes 0 sense, as the Pokemon Company regularly drops tons of merch NOT tied to a new generation all the time. And considering Pokemon's popularity, they are raking in a fortune off plushies, trading cards and the Anime alone... so why justify them rushing and releasing the games unfinished if the gravy train is still pouring money in whether the company has a new game or not? Also, Palworld is far from done. The game is still in Beta, and just announced a free content update with a ton of new features; new Pals, new Construction kits, new items, a new island to explore and even new gameplay mechanics. Pokemon also did this in S/V, but that was DLC you had to pay for, and the new content was exclusively restricted to the new area.

    I find it interesting how often Castlevania's music seems to appear in other games. Pony Island's Beelzebub track directly samples from Castlevania 1's stage 13-15 music (Heart of Fire), and when listening to the Castlevania 2 music montage at 51:32, I was immediately reminded of Plants vs Zombies' Pool theme (Watery Grave). Makes me wonder how many other composers have taken inspiration from Castlevania's tracks.

    i wanted to mention that the space konami had for tiles to spend on different areas in castlevania 2 vs castlevania 3 actually was a limitation of hardware: while the nes itself wouldn't receive many upgrades for it's lifespan, it did have support for cartridges themselves to upgrade the capabilities of the nes. many iconic games later in it's lineup would have the capability to swap out graphics data on the fly in order to achieve a larger effective amount of graphics, and the total amount available only increased with time

    My main issue with Palworld (outside of it being a survival-crafting game) is the combat. I like that you can fight beside your Pals and ride them, or perform some kind of tag-team option with them (like Foxsparks' flamethrower), but outside of that, I hate that you have very little control over what moves your Pal performs. They have a bad habit of using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to catch a Pal, and not using super-effective attacks when I'm trying to kill a Pal. The AI is also horrible in that they'll frequently get stuck on terrain, or completely miss attacks often. I feel like I'm doing much more of the work sometimes during fights. On top of that, I really don't like the lack of evolution. It basically makes early game Pals get far outclassed by more late game Pals. Sure, there are some ways to make sure the early game Pals can keep up, but it requires a lot of work and time when I could just, ya know, catch a more powerful Pal instead. There are other issues I have too, like the overly simplistic type chart, 3 moves instead of 4 for each Pal, and 5 Pals on a team instead of 6, but the other issues I feel play a bigger role into why I find the combat lacking.

    • @kazoorion7993
      @kazoorion7993 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get what you are trying to say, but 1) You CAN choose which moves you want your Pal to use and which one you don't and while the AI still needs some improvement, you have to take into consideration the cooldown of your attacks cuz the stronger it is, the longer it will be. The strategy here is that you have at least one decent move with less cooldown as possible so your Pal won't be defenseless during a fight. 2) The lack of evolution complain doesn't make too much sense when as you progress the game, you naturally get stronger Pals. Hell, if you actually put some time and effort, you can actually get some end game juggernauts like Astegon and Shadowbeak, but that's mostly recommended when you are in the mid game as you have access to level 3 kindling Pals like Blazehowl and Ragnahawk and preparing Breeding cakes doesn't take too long. 3) The overly simplistic type chart is actually at the game favor, as it makes every type balanced and even having some perks like grass moves greatly slowing down your opponent with the vine effect or some Dark moves being able to poison your oponent, unlike the type chart in Pokemon where lot of types like Ice and Rock are very shitty while some like Fairy are very OP. As for the rest, I think you are making an unfair comparation as naturally you shouldn't expect stuff like this to be exactly like Pokemon. Sometimes, for better or worse, you need to adapt to the game mechanic which is why other games in the same genre like Yokai Watch are different in this regard.

    • @Kohchu
      @Kohchu 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I kinda understand what you're saying... but at the same time. I have to disagree. In Pokemon, I feel the majority of the time, I can just tap the A button mindlessly without thinking, and I will basically win. There's very little moments where I actually have to focus, because Pokemon is so easy, it's kind of insulting at times. The main game is basically elemental rock paper scissors; if you have a Super effective move; you basically will win unless the Devs specifically set things up to be slightly harder (things like Cynthia, where the challenge is high because her team is actually competent and makes you think). Because so many trainers in Pokemon just use 1 type; as long as you build a team with coverage, you will pretty much never lose a fight, and if you do... you can just try again. Palworld meanwhile, makes Combat more freeform and dynamic. You yourself dictate how combat goes, but because you are the primary commander, if you get KO'd, you instantly fail the battle. This is balanced with you having one of the highest DPS' but also being the most important to protect. Your Pals, are more or less supporters who can offer a distraction, fight up close to draw fire, offer supporting fire; or allow team up moves for massive firepower. Some even buff your attacks with different elements. The Combat is also more universal, since while Pals can only know 3 Moves, you can change them on the fly, and even during combat (if you find a safe spot) and all Pals can learn all moves via the fruits you find. Which majorly helps with engagements. The simplified Type Chart helps Palworld; since Pokemon's type chart seems built on the "I thought it would be fun" idea rather than a balanced idea. Many types are undercooked and not worth using; while others are OP as heck. Each type in Palworld is neutral except the weakness cases; but outside of combat, each element of Pal also dictates how useful they are for different jobs around the base. The Pals value extends beyond just gruntwork in your party, which is also a major reason I like Palworld more. Instead of jamming all the Pals into a PC Box, I have most of them aiding with construction and building things. In comparison, most Pokemon just sit in the PC collecting dust.

    • @RednekGamurz
      @RednekGamurz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kazoorion7993 1. I know you can pick what moves your Pal has in their moveset, but you can't dictate which of their moves they use at any given time. Sure, you can change their moves at any time, even during combat, but that's not feasible most of the time. It'd be nice if there was a way to temporarily disable some of your Pals' moves to avoid accidently KOing Pals you don't want to. 2. I probably should've elaborated more on this point, but the main reason I dislike the lack of evolution is that it means you can't form any kind of attachment to your Pals in the same way you can with your Pokemon. In Pokemon, ones you catch early on can be viable for the entire playthrough, but in Palworld early game Pals you catch get quickly outclassed by newer Pals you find. It's admittedly a more personal point. Palworld's lack of evolution isn't wrong, per say, but I just simply prefer Pokemon's system in this case. 3. In theory, you're right, but there are 2 types in Palworld that aren't balanced; fire and neutral. Fire is the only type in the game that's strong against 2 different types (grass and ice). Meanwhile, neutral is objectively the worst type since it's weak to dark, and not strong against anything. Hell, neutral doesn't even have it's own status effects or side benefits (like how normal types in Pokemon have larger than usual movepools to make up for the type kinda sucking otherwise).

    • @kazoorion7993
      @kazoorion7993 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RednekGamurz 1) While that sounds good on paper, it would become less prudent as you progress the game due to the need to keep up with the most powerful enemies and which Pals you want to use when each encounter. You can still choose which move you want your Pal to use if they are rideable tho. 2) I can see why and it's a very valid point. No harm done. 3) I think it's more about how residual damage works as burn (and poison) are needed when dealing with some of the strongests bosses in the games (Legendaries and Raid bosses one included). I would say the biggest problem with Palworld's type charting would be the lack of options of cercain types like Electric, Ice and even Water (this one being the opposite problem of Pokemon as there are way too many Water type Pokemon lol), as well as the overabundance of Dark type Pals, which just worsened with the Sakurajima update. The latter isn't a big deal since them being able to keep doing their task in your base during night without having to make extra beds for them or wasting an entire slot for the Nocturnal passve for them, but it makes me wish there were more Pals that had a type that really needs more of them, even if it's a sub species. Of course a lot of these problems can be solved via future updates so it's up for us to wait and give them constructive critiques and/or tips and wait.

    38:20 It's funny how you mention those genres considering I've heard of Pocket Monsters since the first gen, but I was more of a spin-off person. And considering I've only kept up with the series just for the monsters/creatures themselves and nothing else. Heck, just watching someone play the mainline games to me is boring as freak, and the battling doesn't even help either. My family, siblings and I are more of a mixed bag/variety of genres. We usually don't stick with a specific genre very long as it's more of based on mood. For me, while I did like playing and buying video games, in the long run, watching videos, movies, tv shows, and listening to music were four things that I loved spending time on more often than I did playing video games. And when the internet came along by the time my school did a project on it in September 2005, I completely dropped playing video games altogether in favor of spending hours, and hours, and hours of my free time just searching the web, watching movie trailers I never knew existed, and with TH-cam existing, it gave me content and stuff (ranging from content centuries ago all the way up to the present), it was basically heaven/time machine to be able to discover content that my parents and grandparents watched back in the 20th century, and learn a ton of stuff from centuries ago that my dad would have loved to learn, look up, and read about if it existed back in the 1980s and such. Because of this I ended up going from a person loving and playing video games 24/7, to more of a video/movie watcher and music listener that I prefer to do more often than play video games. Not to mention being a person who discovered 1980s content in October 2008 thanks to Back To The Future long before the nostalgia 1980's trend occurred five years later in 2014, I was so hooked onto looking everything up about that decade, from the mainstream to the underground (and there's still more out there in many decades prior to the 21st century from where we are currently). So I ended up becoming a person who loved Back To The Future more often than Pokemon, but I would absolutely love to see elements of time travel appear in the game at some point, or added more islands in this game for me to explore and such (but we'll have to wait and see). And not to mention the possible court case towards Yuzu/Switch emulators and Pocketpair, this year is going to be one of the second most controversial gaming years (last one being 2004 and 2007) that I've seen in a very long time. As for Palworld though, with many people already uploading mods into the game, it's only going to get better from here, even if they update the game to a new version in the next 8 months or so. But for Palworld, it reminded me a lot of how much time I've spent on the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, 7 Days To Die, and most of all, the endless, ENDLESS amount of hours spent on playing online multiplayer and solo mode of Call of Duty Black Ops 1 Zombies, with the "FIVE" map still being my favorite zombie map of all time (Most people like Kino but I'd prefer FIVE because not only is it a challenge, it's just a lot more chaotic, fun, and waaayyy more intense compared to Kino. But that's just me.) And while Pokemon for me, much like Digimon, were on and off franchises, I feel like Digimon (in Japan at least) was one of those franchises before Palworld that was more on the mature side of lore/story. But again, it was similar in gameplay to do turn based battles like Pokemon did. So seeing Palworld be able to take a stab into not only one of the ideas I had in mind of being able to fight alongside your creatures/monsters you had on board, but also be able to explore pretty much anywhere you like in multiple different regions, whether in the fictional world, or in real life being able to use your monsters/creatures to go around the world from North and South America to even the polar caps of North and South Poles. So for my family and I, we're usually casuals to the gaming side of things, but my sister is more of a person who likes to beat games at her own pace, while my oldest brother and I are more of video game players that just like to have fun and go crazy with stuff (my second older brother still prefers to play on consoles and buy physical/digital copies on his playstation consoles to this very day). Personally, I pretty much love each and every creature in this game, and considering the amount of dragons and birds included in the game, they're all my favorite. Plus, I don't know if Pocketpair knows this, but seeing one of the bird creatures be called "Nitewing" was a very nice but obscure reference to one of the very early TH-cam video game reviewing channels (along with AVGN, Irate Gamer, and Wiiviewr to name a few) being "Knightwing" or K-Wing for short. When I saw that name, I couldn't help but name it "Knightwing" as a reference to one of the very first youtube video game reviewing channels I came across (Not just Irate Gamer which I still love his late 2000s Seasons 1-7 videos to this very day, including his "History of Video Games" series from parts 1-9 that I'm not sure why he hasn't finished the series yet or something.)

    How I see Palworld, this is just my opinion, it's sort of parody BUT at the same time makers have passion for it and do things with players in mind. Like progress and overall mechanics are fun. I think it's good that pokémon company gets slap on their fingers. The latest two games and their pokémon designs have been horrible and lazy.

      Ok, I wont defend the state SV was released in, but I'll definitely defend the designs as they're still 1 of the best parts of Pkmn to this day just like the music.

      @@lipika2841 I liked older generations, but some of these new just are so lazy. Like the mouse who "evolves" and just have same kind of mouses holding hands. Or that pokémon who is literally like olive etc. Like cmon pokémon company, you can do better. I don't defend palworld designs either, you can clearly see mix and match designs, but as I said, palworld feels more like a parody with their designs (like that first boss and her pal looks like that one sword/shield boss and their pokémon). Pokémon music is good, palworld music is kinda forgettable, which I don't mind 'cause I have a good reason to play my own music on bg.

    ill start by saying that i diidnt grow up with pokemon games, i grew up with theyre predicesors and betters games like final fantasy 7, final fantasy tactics, and legend of the dragoon, games that genuinly reached the very peak of what rpg's could be at that time and even some years after, pokemon is whats called a beginners rpg, light on mechanics story and characters that could overwelm the toddlers that played them, sadly pokemon never grew up with those todlers... and even sadder, by the sales numbers of there most recent and worst games... they never had to grow up... the fans will eat the slurry regardless of quality... i dont know whats more depressing, that gamefreak will never have to try... or that the fans will never care to force them to try.

      As someone who did grow up with pokemon, you hit the nail on the head with its problems, for me personally at least: the games and world didn't grow up with me. I loved everything about the world from its characters to the cute pokemon as a kid, but as I grew and they stayed the same I moved away and moved on. I bought Pokemon let's go Eevee as well as the diamond and pearl remake more for nostalgia reasons than any other when they released. Playing those two felt like my way of saying goodbye to the world of pokemon one last time since I know it's forever stuck in the past. I said for years that the best way for pokemon to really be a success again would be to grow up with its core audience, and palworld proved that to me.

      Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game ever, I played it for the first time when I was 10 or 11 and it definitely overwhelmed me! Struggling to see the credits of that game for years is one of my formative gaming memories. I remember being very excited for Pokémon Conquest back when that came out since it was in the same genre and being a little bit disappointed with it even though it was a pretty good spin-off title. I don't think all hope is lost for Pokémon, there is a hint of passion in Legends Arceus that just isn't being given enough nutrition and time to bloom into something great.

    I don't think Palworld will simply be a quick flash and gone. The cult following is strong (and I'm right there with everyone) if anything. I actually really love the Pal designs more than the recent Pokémon gen. They've really captured my heart while I was capturing them.

    25:44 heck yeah! Having your flying mount get obliterated by a gang with rocket launchers in the desert and having to walk it back out on foot and find a new fast travel spot is so desolate and epic. Makes for memorable gaming experiences - the event actually becomes part of your story and adds to the immersive experience.

      And? The amount of current players means nothing if PKMN continues as normal. They sell gigantic amounts of merchandise, they'll continue to release profitable games, the TCG and competitive scene is one of the best on the market, etc etc etc. Something good that can coexist with it means nothing at all.

    • @BlueChessboardRook
      @BlueChessboardRook 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Big_Dai Pokémon is going to sell well no matter what, I don't think even one or two viable competitors would change that. It's firmly rooted in global pop culture. Palworld (probably) won't scale up to become a mega franchise like Pokémon is, but its success definitely won't go unnoticed by the industry at large. There is a demand for quality monster collector games on several major platforms that isn't being met and everyone, including Nintendo and Game Freak, just saw proof of that.

    I'm very mixed on the lack of Evolution in palworld. On one hand, I wish i could improve my early game pals into stronger versions of themselves, turning like my Foxparks into a more powerful fox, or even evolve it into a Wixen or something so I could keep using it well into the endgame rather than replacing it... but at the same time, the POINT of Palworld is that pals are expendable, so it makes sense.

    • @Shaun_Jones
      @Shaun_Jones 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You actually can improve your pals through breeding (to get different combinations of passive traits) and through condensing (to improve their stats); the pals just don’t change their appearance. You can also use the skill fruits to give pals new attacks and change what attacks are active at any time. As far as late game is concerned, there’s a guy who bred and optimized a Lamball that can take on all five tower bosses and all the legendaries, so if you’re willing to put in the hours you can make any pal viable late-game.
