Wow, to see so much amount of efforts put into making this review is amazing. To see more high quality reviews of my beloved game recently is heart pounding.
It is very worthy of dissection and study! This video was a labor of love because of how much enjoyment I got from the game. Easily my game of the year. ❤
I'm loving the recent praise for this game. The Souls community has put From Software on a pedestal; everything they produce is the best that can possibly be produced. Though they have to be credited with the creation of the genre, and fine tuning it, Neowiz have expertly created a game that, at the very least, rivals From Software's best efforts. I actually cared about the characters and the overall plot, the music was beautiful and set the atmosphere perfectly, the weapon management encouraged multiple builds, the lack of re-used enemies, particularly bosses, was something FromSoft can learn from if/when we get an Elden Ring 2. I'm just going to say that as a huge fan of everything FromSoft have released since Demon's Souls, Lies of P is better.
So personally... I don't think it's "better" than all the fromsoft souls games. But I do think, as a single player experience, it is better than... Demons Souls, DS1, and DS2. I think it's on par with Bloodborne and DS3. It does have strengths and weaknesses that set it apart from those games. Notably, Lies doesn't have many optional secret areas. And I was just a smidge disappointed but that. However, the story flows really well, and I don't know if optional areas would have hurt that or not, so it's like... I can't really take any points off for the lack of that specific thing. I do think the lack of multiplayer kinda hurts replayability a bit for me at least, because I prefer playing the souls games in co-op a lot of the time. I can understand why it doesn't have multiplayer though. Bit of an undertaking for a new studio. Lies is really up there for me. And I think it got unfairly judged by news outlets who called it "derivative", despite the fact that it does what it does well. It's been a while since we've had a more linear soulslike, after all. Elden Ring is great, but having the smaller, interconnected level design is great in its own right. If I have a few gripes with Lies, it's that the translation can be off at points. Needs to be fixed up in a few places. And the boss music isn't super memorable. That's not to say that the game doesn't have amazing music. The hotel theme, the records, upper abbey theme, opera house theme... Just a few phenomenal examples. I just hope they get someone to make some amazing boss themes in the DLC and next game.
I think your criticism of them needing to “learn” to have more unique enemies by comparing it to LoP is very unfair. Their games that were comparable in size to LoP which is nearly all of them I’m 99% sure all have more unique enemies. Elden Ring’s size in terms of playable world is MASSIVE even for an open world game. There are many more unique enemies in ER than in LoP, but due to the scale it’s on it’s not as noticeable. It’s just not realistic to have the same enemy variety in a level by level game as you do in not just an open world game but a HUGE open world game. There are other things that make it unique and work fantastically in a soulslike that LoP has, but that’s the point with this genre and would stifle the main uniqueness that make these games more than just clones if they were put into other studio’s games
lies of p is not even close to rivalling any aspect of any fromsoft game barring combat. the atmopshere isnt as good or detailed, the enemy and boss combat leaves alot to be desired, the game is derivative to a laughable degree, the music, barring a few good ones, is mediocre at best, the lore is also mediocre at best and copy pastes fromsoft as usual, overall its the best souls like not made by fromsoft by a gigantic margin, but doesnt close to an actual fromsoft game barring ds2. it doesnt have anywhere near the charm of NPCs from fromsoft, nothing compared to the likes of solaire or height or even the mushroom from ds1. overall the game has no actual character of its own. "the lack of re-used enemies, particularly bosses, was something FromSoft can learn from if/when we get an Elden Ring 2" thats kinda laughable considering elden ring has quadruple the un reused enemy variety, quadruple the bosses, and quadruple the mini bosses, if not more, not to mention literally 99% of reused content in elden ring is optional, all this are better than most lies of p have to offer barring laxasia and king of puppets and maybe the secret final boss, although lies of P minibosses are fantastic, also, newwiz wishes they could makea game even half as big as elden ring with a fraction of the quality, in truth, fromsoft doesnt have to learn anything neowiz, neowiz are the ones that copy pasted the fromsoft playbook lol. "The Souls community has put From Software on a pedestal" as they should, since not even lies of P comes close to any souls game barring ds2. " I'm just going to say that as a huge fan of everything FromSoft have released since Demon's Souls, Lies of P is better." thats alright, we can all have preferences, you prefer the knock off that made things easier for itself by copy pasting literally everything, we prefer the originals.
@@Patrick-bn5rpthe only way lies of P is better than ds1 is the combat, the rest ds1 wipes the floor with lies of p. level design, music, enemy variety, atmosphere etc etc hell same goes for bb and ds3, theyre only better than ds1 in combat and bosses, the rest ds1 is by far laughably better. elden ring is the best fromsoft game by a gigantic margin if you ask me.
I'm sorry what? The lack of reused enemies? There are some 4 or 5 types of dogs, conductor puppets from the 1st level to the last, the same broken/crawling puppets can be found constantly, the exact same 3 gunman are found on every level past halfway.
Thank you for your words! The thoughts on offer give rare praise to the true strength of the Soulsborne design niche: its invitation to iterate. Yes, we see some of what was radical about From's approach waning in their own output as growth gains and scope increases; still, Neowiz and Round 8's debut is a bold Bruce Lee nose-thumb at its peers and teacher alike.
Just wanted to say great video man. I don't play many Soulslike games but have passing interest in them from watching many of Joseph Anderson's videos on the games. It was actually this video's thumbnail that caught my eye - it's very well done. Glad I clicked because I enjoyed the video's content too.
With Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro being my favorite Fromsoft games, it would be no surprise to say that I loved The Lies of P. Can't say I agree with any of your complaints about Sekiro, but I am glad you like LoP. They really achieved something special here.
Gave this vid a like before even watching it because in the first 10 seconds you didn't play "Feel" like 99% of others. a man of culture. the music in this game is fantastic
I used it near the end of the video when I addressed the music instead! Thanks for noticing though, I wanted to draw attention to the instrumental tracks since they are equally great.
Man this was such a good video. By the time I finished I was surprised by how little views it has. Also the first person I've seen addressing the amazing and charming manner in which music is incorporated Not to deviate from the subject, but I loved how your increasing humanity is shown. Like the cat becoming friendly with you, having various different animations for certain humanity checkpoints,. P is mute for most of the game, but after a certain amount of humanity, he will grunt or make some sound when being hit for example. I've also seen someone say your arm doesn't twitch at the start of the game, and only does so, again, once you get some degree of humanity. I haven't been able to check that myself tho, it could be some particular legion arms, tho it makes sense if it isn't, as if your increasingly human body is rejecting the more mechanical arm. Anyways, I absolutely loved the combat in this game, and I'd struggle to see myself playing something without it feeling inferior and making me wish it was like LoP in some ways
I do love the cat in Hotel Krat. I hope somebody goes through and compiles a video list of all of the different effects that humanity has on P, that would be pretty cool to see. The devs handled this part of the story well by using a mix of subtle and obvious elements to illustrate the gradual puppet to human transformation process; those details are what really sell this game's story. This year's Dead Space remake did something similar by showing the main character, Isaac, become increasingly unhinged as the story goes on. He starts off grunting and panting when you stomp, but by the end he'll be shouting curse words and screaming at the top of his lungs. The idea is used to reinforce the downward spiral of that game's narrative, kinda the opposite of how these details are used in Lies of P. I don't remember how much that is from the original Dead Space.
He also gets progressively better at the piano in the lobby and yes ive also noticed that the character starts to breathe normally but i thought i might be imagining it 😮
Thank you for the video! I was really happy you gave such care to discussing the music. I'm not sure how intentional it was, but the fact that you're very likely to be listening to Fascination when you meet Polendina in the garden is my favorite aesthetic bit from the game.
thank you for mentioning the DJMAX series, I didn't know Lies of P would pull music from those games so when I heard Far East Princess after having heard it in djmax respect v and then realized one of the records i got in game was named the same thing i was curious and then elated when I realized it was the same song. This video is the first time I've seen a Lies of P video actually mention that about the music beyond "wow, Feel is really good"
I have played and beaten almost every known soulslike because I just fell in love with them and wanted more after all of FromSoftware’s, yet I still enjoyed the very detailed explanations of game mechanics that you gave in the beginning. Looking forward to seeing your channel grow!
Well thought-out analysis. I haven't played Demon Souls yet, but all the others I have, and I agree with almost everything. I personally think Sekiro is one of the best from FromSoftware, but that's because I like how the game forces you to really master just one thing and rewards you immensely to the point it feels like you are shredding normies in the next playthroughs. I also agree that the 20 blood vials is way too much healing in Bloodborne (at least at the start - Orphan of Kos hits hard enough that you need to maintain full health to survive or risk getting one-shot), and the split healing/mana is one of the primary reasons I really only play magic, pyro, or faith builds in Dark Souls (for which it works really well but as you point out, to the detriment of any pure melee build). I really enjoyed LoP's take on the rally system. In Bloodborne, you could just go nuts on the enemy to restore your own health. In Lies of P, you lose the entire rally pool if you are careless in your attacks to get health back. It forces focused play, and the pool degenerates slow enough that despite being more methodical, you can still recover a substantial amount of HP playing like that. I also thank you for sharing your thoughts on the music. It's true that music is underappreciated in video games, but I don't think it's for a lack of listening. I myself listen to those hour-long playlists of game soundtracks, and both Gris and Ori's music hold a special place in my heart. The fact is that most of the audience is just not musically informed to appreciate the absolute grindset that is the process of creating music, or understanding why certain progressions are put in certain places (e.g., why the opposing treble and bass progressions in Hollow Knight's final boss music is so thematically significant). I play the piano and compose myself as a little side hobby but I am not musically informed or trained either. I primarily picked it up as a source of enjoyment and not as a source of income, but it's really hard regardless. I can only imagine how challenging it is to create original music at the pace that is required of a video game composer. It's also the reason I feel that releasing OSTs as paid to support the composer is fine and should be commonplace. The one decision that does not sit right with me is that the deluxe edition is $10 more for a few costumes. I feel like there should be more like free access to DLC when it releases. But apart from that, LoP is about as perfect as possible. It's one-upped its own genre and the genre that inspired it, and that's a genuinely impressive feat for a studio that just dipped its feet into a genre that is truly the dark souls of game development.
I don't think you should complain about enemy damage in Sekiro when your Vitality is very low for what seems to be NG+ and you have both bell demon and charmless.
Oooooh that’s why when I picked up I think it was dark souls in 2010 when I was in Japan There wasn’t a GameStop so my selection of games was rough on base Didn’t know what it was took it back to the barracks I don’t remember there being a hud or any directions So I wandered around found an a npc in a jail cell Think I killed him Ran from a damn Skeleton that wouldn’t die no matter how many times I downed him Than I found a courtyard with a giant troll who killed me in one hit Took the game out of my 360 Never played it again
You need a divine weapon to permanently put those guys down- alternatively, some of them are 'attached' to a necromancer who keeps them 'alive'. These guys don't respawn so once you go a bit further, onwards and downwards, look for them as a priority...
LoP has incredibly tight hitboxes. That's a major evolution of soulslike combat mechanics.
Agreeed! Had an amazing time with Lies of P!

34:40 there is a P-Organ upgrade that allows for more than 1 Legion Arm to be equipped :)

Awesome video. One small error: thrust is effective against all humans regardless of armor. Think of it like piercing a vital organ
Thanks for clarifying.
Very nice video, you deserve a lot more subscribers!!
I can not imagine the amount of work it took you to make an hour video long!
Insightful video. Thanks
Good video, dude. 👍
21:29 it’s not a grappling hook it’s your arm for fuck sakes. Thats why it has limitations.
Nice work thanks ❤

Did not even know weapons could break in DS3. Great video!
Great vid 👌

I appreciate that dig on Zelda
I hate how often weapons break in those damn games
Oooooh that’s why when I picked up I think it was dark souls in 2010 when I was in Japan
There wasn’t a GameStop so my selection of games was rough on base
Didn’t know what it was took it back to the barracks
I don’t remember there being a hud or any directions
So I wandered around found an a npc in a jail cell
Think I killed him
Ran from a damn Skeleton that wouldn’t die no matter how many times I downed him
Than I found a courtyard with a giant troll who killed me in one hit
Took the game out of my 360
Never played it again
Im enjoying lies of p 😃

Hmm is that why my first skeleton in dark souls kept getting back up? Because I was using a sword instead of a blunt weapon?

Lies of P is somehow very similar to Steelrising. I think they were developed simultaneously but nobody is talking about Steelrising.
because it's complete dogwater compared to lies of p
Lies of p is a better version of steelrising
Never heard of steel rising. Is it good?
I’m one of the weirdos that likes both games.
