      I think for the rest of her life Judy Collins has carried a bit of a flame, appreciation for Stephen Stills. Such great talents both of them. Actually I call myself a Judy Collins groupie. I'm going to yet another Judy Collins concert this September.

    Stephen Stills attended the same high school my son attended, but many decades earlier. He was invited back by the local university to be a guest lecturer, which was open to the public and a free event. I attended, expecting to hear some great stories of his musical composing and experiences in the business. I think all told there were maybe 50 of us in attendance, even though the talk was widely publicized, which is how I heard about it.
    Instead, he took to the lectern and said (I'm paraphrasing from memory, but it was definitely along these lines):
    "I was invited to speak six months ago. I accepted, knowing I could put together an hour or so talk to enlighten you. Last week when I checked my schedule and saw this, I was dismayed to realize time had once again gotten the better of me. So, I'm here to do what I do best."
    With that he strapped on one of his acoustic guitars, and played for nearly three hours.
    One of the most unexpected, but best experiences of my life.

    a suite in music: "a set of instrumental compositions, originally in dance style, to be played in succession."
    The album cover is L-R: Graham Nash, Steven Stills and David Crosby.. The name was because they were never meant to be a set band. Neil Young joined for the next album and they also recorded as "Crosby Nash" and "The Stills Young Band."
    Steven Stills wrote this song about his relationship with folk singer Judy Collins. It was created from pages a pages of lyrics he wrote over months. He plays nearly every instrument and sings the lead vocals. Nash hits the high notes and Crosby floats around in the middle. Remarkably, after nearly dying multiple times, the one member whose voice still sounds about the same today is David Crosby who had massive drug and health problems. This song is from 1969.
    Crosby Stills and Nash was founded after Steven's previous band broke up (Buffalo Springfield which also featured Neil Young), Nash had quit The Hollies and Crosby was fired from The Byrds. Their second live performance: Woodstock. Neil Young joined them for that but didn't want to be filmed.
    Neil Young is a MASSIVE black hole of music. It's had to explain his catalog. Over 40 studio albums, including a few newly released albums that were recorded in the 1970s, plus three Buffalo Springfield albums. three Crosby Stills Nash and Young albums and The Stills Nash Band album. Plus one solo EP and appearing on both tracks of the Pear Jam Merkin Ball EP recorded during the sessions for his album Mirror Ball with Pearl Jam as the backing band. Many of his live albums are must haves. He's recorded rock, folk, country, blues, electronic, rockabilly and a live album of pure feedback. Some is horrendous, a few are spectacular. He's still out there recording and touring and making unexpected turns.

    These guys have a very storied past. All of them came out of great bands before they formed and played in front of 400,000 at Woodstock. Did a great job with this song in the Movie, and it was only their second time playing in front of a crowd!..Now, this is just one version of the group. The other is with Neil Young, which made it CSN&Y..Equally as good, if not better..Young, of course had/has a brilliant solo career, and with his band "Crazy Horse."..All of them can play, sing, and write...Too much on these guys to go on about here. You should read about them, and just listen to everything, and anything they were a part of..BTW, Young performed with them at Woodstock, but wouldn't allow them to film him. You can only hear him...Young's album's "After The Goldrush", and "Harvest" are absolute musts!..Sorry, I grew up with this music.

    I stumbled on your channel, Hi. this album came out in 1970. That is 50 years ago. You mentioned that it has a 'Beatles Vibe' the songs of those days were heavily influenced by the Beatles. If you do some digging, you will find that these three guys came from successful bands.
    This band with the addition of Neil Young played at Woodstock in '69. This band only put out three albums. My personal favorite is 'Deja Vu' and the songs I like the most are the title track (deja vu) and 'Almost Cut My Hair'. Rock and Roll was in a transition in those years, the genre was sliding into a more 'country' feel with soaring harmonies and deep lyrics, There was a split in the music much like you see today. for instance, going from speed metal to grunge. they both existed but different strokes for different folks. With CSN&Y, folks were thrown back by the events at Altamont. The summer of love in '67 ended up being three years later, just a bunch of speed freak, stoned out hippies. We lost our innocents as it were, mainly because people suck. This band was in that transitional period. Some historians agree that the events at Altamont, changed us from a postmodern zeitgeist to a post-postmodern view of life. Great video reaction, keep up the good work. I will sub.

      Correction, wikipedia, emphasis added: "The trio's first album, , was RELEASED IN MAY 1969. The eponymously titled album was a major hit in the United States, peaking at #6 on the album chart during a 107-week stay that spawned two Top 40 hits ("Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" [#21] and "Marrakesh Express" [#28]) and significant airplay on FM radio."

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The modern trend is pretty much the opposite of the late '60's vibe. Back then, fragments of the music scene were being drawn into the mainstream consciousness and being labeled "fusion" music. CSN was labeled "folk-rock", but just as easily have been labeled "country-rock" with the vocal harmonies mimicking those of country music. We had the jazz-rock of Steely Dan, the "psychedelic-rock" of the SF scene, and many more sub-genres being played on the radio.
      Nowadays, variety in mainstream music is disappearing as a side-effect of the internet, where those who love one genre exclusively pretty much insist on purity and seek out podcasts composed of exactly what they want to hear, and fusion sounds are no longer being played. Same goes for radio, too, with stations playing only one genre of popular music and nobody playing all of them like the old FM underground stations of the late '60's and early '70's. It's the main reason that mainstream popular music sucks now.

  • @wilfbentley6738

    It's a "suite" because it is a marriage of three parts with different melodies. As to the members of CSN=>
    Graham Nash formerly a member of the Hollies - a British band famed for their harmonies.
    Stephen Stills - talented guitarist - that's his guitar work that you hear in this song.
    David Crosby - member of "The Byrds" - split from that band acrimoniously.
    Later joined by Neil Young formerly (with Stills) a member of Buffalo Springfield, forming CSNY.

    • @shanna9650
      @shanna9650 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its also a suite as there are three distinct sections of this piece of music... three songs, one suite. There are two voices talking lyrically and musically, Judy and Stephen, which underscores again the suite. It's a masterpiece.

    • @tygerbrite
      @tygerbrite ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Stills said he had been working on several pieces and decided to put them all together and the transitions worked. In this sense, "suite" means medley.
      I haven't read all the comments, but surely someone has mentioned that he wrote it for Judy Collins after they broke up.

    Stills played the bass and all the guitars on this (and most of the album), Crosby later accused him of treating him and Nash as his backup singers (these guys fought a LOT over the years but the music (and the money, if you want to be more cynical!) usually brought 'em back together again, time will tell if that happens one last time (they're in 'off again' mode at present) - other CSN (and sometimes Y) songs well worth checking out are Wooden Ships, Long Time Gone and 4 + 20 (which is just Stills and an acoustic and is sublime - also check out anything from his self-titled solo album - closing track We Are Not Helpless is 50 years old but the lyrics (sadly) still hold meaning today).

    I think the lyrics are the stages of an on-off relationship breakup. First, he blames himself, then he gets more bitter and blaming her (please be gone I'm tired of you/ what have you got to lose?) and then rallies himself to try again to win her back. When Stills played the song for Judy Collins, she said, "It's a very nice song, Stephen, but it's not going to win me back." But he got a career out of it instead. The other thing about CSN (and Y) is that the vocals don't sound as amazing now as they did at the time because virtually every band after them modeled their vocals on this harmony model so it now sounds almost generic. If you compare them to what was out before them - Beach Boys, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane - they were revolutionary. The next thing to try is 'Carry On.'

    I see below that people have told you about the members of the band. In the early 70's when Neil Young joined them they were considered a Super Group. Graham Nash sings with the high voice and the others are highly regarded guitar players. My favorite song by them was "Southern Man" and what I loved was the extended guitar playing in the middle of the song. I used to put on the headphones and crank it up and play it over and over. Neil Young wrote the song and Lynyrd Skinner takes dig at him by name in the song Sweet Home Alabama for writing it. It's a very long song, but since you like guitars I think you would love it (just make sure it's the long version........they put out a short version for radio play).

    The richness of that fat, round, analog sound. Steven Stills playing his guitar through a Hammond Leslie rotary speaker amp designed for organ...foot peddles were barely a thing yet. Their live versions are mostly acoustic, I'm glad the album version is mostly electric. You're picking 'em, Daniel. 👍✌

    A purely technical point, but one that adds clarification, the title is "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." It is a musical suite comprised of related songs.
    Definition of suite
    2 : a group of things forming a unit or constituting a collection : set: such as
    a : a group of rooms occupied as a unit
    b(1) : a 17th and 18th century instrumental musical form consisting of a series of dances in the same or related keys
    (2) : a modern instrumental composition in several movements of different character
    (3) : a long orchestral concert arrangement in suite form of material drawn from a longer work (such as a ballet)

    IMO the whole song is about one woman, sweet Judy Blue Eyes, and when he says will you come see me on Thursdays and Saturdays, he's talking about being in a mental hospital after a breakdown and asking for visitation. At least that's always been my interpretation, but your take is super interesting.

      There are at least three distinct sections of the song, hence a suite. There are two distinct "voices" one being Judy, and the other being Stephen, who are sung by CSN, which also underscores suite. Stills loved alliteration and other wordplay. It's one of best aspects besides his stunning guitar work and arranging.

CSN (and sometimes Young) are amazing. lots of great stuff out there...acoustic and electric. since you play you might find this interesting. the guitar tuning for this song is E E E E B E. fun to play. some other gems from them....first and foremost OHIO. read up on that purpose and the story behind the recording and release before you listen. one of the most important songs ever (in my opinion). other good ones Wooden Ships, Almost Cut My Hair, Southern Cross, Long time gone. each of these guys have done amazing solo stuff as well as the music from the bands they came from to for CSN (buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, the Hollies)

So, CSN&Y. Check out "Ohio", about the national guards shooting at Kent State in 1970 by them and Neil Young's "Harvest " or Woodstock

    These three bandmembers are also members of seminal rock groups - David Crosby in the Byrds, Stephen Stills, the Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash of the British pop group the Hollies. Contextually realize that this sound was the first time these kind of harmonies were mixed since the Beatles and they were a revelation. The later edition of Neil Young also of Buffalo Springfield added even more texture to the group as well as the depth of songwriting. The group has come and gone and come again and continues to tour.

    First, CROSBY STILLS &NASH. WENT ON TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. NOT JUST AS THIS TRIO. BUT IN PRIOR BANDS THAT THEY CAME FROM, AND THAT BEING GRAHAM NASH THE HOLLIES. STEPHEN STILLS AND DAVID CROSBY THE BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. ALSO COLLABORATION OF ANOTHER SHORT LIVED BUT VERY IMPORTANT BAND MEMBER NEIL YOUNG . ANOTHER STUPENDOUS MUSICIAN, & SONG WRITER. STEPHEN AND NEIL ALSO WENT INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME FOR THEIR SOLO CAREERS. FUNNY YOU SAID YOU GOT THE BEATLE VIBE FROM THEIR HARMONIES. I HEARD THEM AS BEING THE BEATLES OF THE 70'S. I've been listening to this song for 51 years (eeek!) and still love it. Stephen Stills was in Buffalo Springfield - chances are you've heard their song "For What It's Worth" - in a lot of movies. David Crosby was in The Byrds and Graham Nash in the Hollies. Ask your dad about those bands. Another one of their songs that showcase their harmonies is Carry On. As with what Richard Ficchi said....yes that's very true. When Stephen wrote the song he brought it right over to Judy Collins house and played it for her. Said she was in tears but wouldn't rekindle their relationship.

    The heart of most of the music of CSN & later Y is the harmonies, thus the Beatles similarity, and tbh The Beatles inspired all of them. But Stephen Stills and, eventually Neil Young, are excellent lead guitarists. All came from other well known bands that emphasized harmonies. Stills from Buffalo Springfield, Crosby from the Byrds, Nash from The Hollies and Young also from Buffalo Springfield. You should explore music from all those groups, too.
