One of the greatest bands ever... made up of former members of The Byrds ( David Crosby ), Buffalo Springfield ( Stephen Stills & Neil Young ) & The Hollies ( Graham Nash ). Some of the greatest singers and harmonizers of their time & also two of the best guitar players ( Stills & Young ). This is from their astonishingly great LP Deja Vu. Another great one from that LP that you might want to do a reaction to is Teach Your Children, with Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead on Pedal Steel Guitar!

This song was written in the Caribbean onboard Crosby's sailboat in the late 60's. Still's is the guitarist, and as this song was recorded and released on Crosby, Stills and Nash's first album. No Young! The song is about sailing away from a war, and surviving without the Silver People on the shoreline. They leave free and easy. Crosby and Stills wrote and provided the main vocals.

Crosby, Stills & Nash were the first super-group more or less. The Hollies meets The Byrds meets Buffalo Springfield. Their first public performance was at Woodstock. Check out their rocked out version of Joni Mitchell's homage to that music festival, the eponymously named "Woodstock". "Ohio" is Neil Young's contribution. "Helpless" is also. "Teach Your Children" and "Our House" are two of Graham Nash's contributions. "Long Time Gone" and "Almost Cut My Hair" are two of David Crosby's contributions. But the song you really ought to check out is "Carry On" -- super tight harmonies and one killer Stephen Stills guitar solo on top of one of the greatest breaks in music you'll ever hear.

This song was co-written by Stills, Crosby and Paul Kantner for the Jefferson Airplane. There is also an Airplane version that interesting, but usually considered inferior, though it has its passionate fans.
Still plays lead guitar. The opening is his Hendrix inspired "chunks" (check out Hendrix opening on Voodoo Child".)
Stills also play organ and bass. Crosby plays the very understated rhythm part.
Still and Crosby share lead vocals in conversation style. Still is the first voice. It is Crosby on the last verse.
The song is about a dystopian world after a nuclear war. Only the seas are safe. They have found some berries that seem to be radiation free. There are "silver people" on the shoreline. These are people on land, in anti-radiation suits. However, on land, life is a struggle. Only on the sea is life free and easy. There is a search for some kind a Shangri- La, that hasn't been touched by war and hatred, and peaceful people will set up some kind of Utopia.
Of course, the song is about hippie fears and hippie dreams, and Crosby's life long obsession with sailing. He is a real sailor, with real knowledge of wind powered ships, and he was famous for the amount of songs written by himself and others on board his boat, especially in the 69 to 72 period, with a group of musicians that included CSN, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane emerging as the pre-pop version of Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger service. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and other Laural Canyon musicians.

Jayvee, someday, for yourself, just listen to the entire "So Far" album all the way through on your headphones while you chill out. It's sometimes forgotten how important entire albums are as a whole, this album in particular was carefully crafted to weave together moods and ideas, much like Beatles Sgt Pepper or Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. Listening to one song is fine but it's a magnificent experience when you listen to all the songs in their intended order.

Stephen Stills is an awesome guitar player, nice jazzy-blues or crazy rock n roll, but he is a perfectionist as is Neil Young which is why they couldn't work together, they both had their own ideas of what that perfection is. I once saw Stephen solo (nice intimate concert in the women's gym at Cal State Northridge) and he had a spiral staircase as his set. On each step were 2 guitars and by the end of the night he used each one of them. He plays on the guitar which he wrote the song. On this song, Crosby was singing lead with Stills answering back. Harmonies are all three of them. The main guitar work on this song is Stills though they all play guitar. They all came together from different bands.. Nash was with the Hollies, Crosby was with the Birds and Stills was with the Buffalo Springfield.

OK Jayvee, I'm going to go way out on a limb on this. This song is a statement pronouncing the end of the post modern era. This statement at this time meant that for the most part the Boomers were leaving behind all preconceived and established norms that society had built. "We are leaving, you don't need us" To what end? To someplace where you can "laugh again" There is no faith in those that seek to rule. The end result is the growth of cynicism as a zeitgeist; and marking the end of the reassessment of the modern era. (the hippy stuff , or counter culture) That was 50 years ago. Where are we now? Well, I'm watching a TH-cam channel of a guy I like, react to a fifty year old song, singing like songbirds about the tearing down of societal norms... LOL. Keep up the good work!!

Brother Jim. I heard the song when it came out and had a similar impression. I didn't like it, because it was sort of saying that the older generation was hopeless and not worth our time. But I have to admit I didn't have a lyrics sheet back then, and was probably reading a lot into it that was just in the air.

Great track Great reaction. Still relevant today. Now contrast it with the Jefferson Airplane version. Paul Kantner from JA was a co writer, Very different approach. Grace Slicks soaring background vocals add a different dimension to the song.

All instruments on this song: Stephen Stills (a.k.a. Captain Manyhands). He overdubbed the instruments, as well as neing a co-composer of this song. Stills was, and is, an amazing multi-instrumentalist. I'm not sure thete is anything he can't play. His is the first vocal on this, followed by David Crosby. He also did the writing and all of the instrumentation on Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.

Neil Young was part of this album. Maybe he was on guitar? He didn’t play with them long at all and went out on His own. Then he became legendary. I dunno who all was on guitar. It really doesn’t matter because this is a great song.

    Some song explanation found online...
The words of the song depict the horrors confronting the survivors of a nuclear holocaust in which the two sides have annihilated each other. A man from one side stumbles upon a man (or woman, as in Jefferson Airplane's version) from the other side and asks him/her, "Can you tell me, please, who won?" Since the question has no real meaning in the circumstances or even at all, it is left unanswered. To stay alive, they share "purple berries", as a result of which they "haven't got sick once" (iodine pills, which protect against radioactive iodine-131 in nuclear fallout).[citation needed] The lyrics beg "silver people on the shoreline," described by David Crosby as "guys in radiation suits," to "let us be."[2] As the wooden ships, devoid of metal that would become radioactive from neutron activation, are carrying the survivors away from the shores, radiation poisoning kills those who have not made it aboard. That grim tableau is described thus:
Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cries
Stare as all human feelings die
We are leaving you don't need us

Check out the lyrics to this : If you smile at me, I will understand
    'Cause that is something
Everybody everywhere does in the same language
I can see by your coat, my friend
    You're from the other side
There's just one thing I got to know
Can you tell me please, who won?
Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now
    Haven't got sick once
    Probably keep us both alive
Wooden ships on the water, very free and easy
Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline, let us be
Talkin' 'bout very free and easy
Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cries
Stare as all human feelings die
We are leaving, you don't need us
Go, take your sister then, by the hand
Lead her away from this foreign land
Far away, where we might laugh again
We are leaving, you don't need us
And it's a fair wind blowin' warm
Out of the south over my shoulder
Guess I'll set a course and go

Still hoping you will do a reaction video of Crosby & Nash’s “Wind on the Water” aka “To the Last Whale”. It’s a beautiful song!
