Stephen Stills, the songwriter, had a great fondness for Latin American music. It’s his influence that led to using Latin rhythms and stylistic flourishes in this and other CSN songs. 👍🏻

I’m 64 and I listen to this song almost once a week since I was 14. It s a very special way of tuning to make a guitar sound so great . I think it’s a G or E open tuning . It took me decades to play it right. If you like this song you should also listen to the David Crosby album « if I could only remember my name ». You will reach the clouds where angels live…

Stills would later say that he worked on this for many months and had various parts that he eventually assembled into this masterpiece of popular music. Illustrates his capacity for poetic lyrics and inventive music, and with Crosby and Nash they elevated harmonies to entirely new levels. One of the first supergroups, bringing together Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), David Crosby (The Byrds) and Graham Nash (The Hollies). Many wonderful songs on that first album. Wooden Ships is a classic.

There was of course the Beatles but then came CSN. This was their first public performance as a group CSNY. They performed this song in Woodstock 1969. They came from 3 popular groups the US Band BUCKINGHAMS (Crosby ), Buffalo Springfield, Byrds (Young & Stills), and the British group the Hollies (Graham Nash). Their songs are the musician's music.

Thank you for this wonderful analysis. I grew up in the seventies and Crosby stills and Nash were my favorite group. They created masterpieces of instrumental and vocal Harmony. I never thought I would hear another group that had that ability. But you must hear Foxes and Fossils! This is a group out of Atlanta that started 12 years ago. Their very first public appearance was in a pub and their very first song was Suite Judy Blue eyes, a very ambitious undertaking to say the least. I have listened to that song on TH-cam, and after the first time have played it 100 more times. My feeling and the feeling of many as you read the comments is that this performance rivals that of the original and there are some that believe it's even better. Personally I won't get into comparisons like that, but suffice it to say that this is a performance worth listening to and reacting to. They absolutely killed this song!
There is a channel called Unhinged Reactions, two musicians from the '70s who played this song themselves. They were real doubters going into this, but upon hearing it, they were floored.

NICE! Love this song 🎸. Love your work. ❤️ The transitions are fabulous 🎶. BTW, I recall that back in the 1970's recording studios didn't have the viable recording technology that we have today or even back in the '80s. Remember quad stereo, 4 channel recording, etc? Well, much of the older stuff I think that was put together by recording or sound engineers couldn't master that overall beautiful blend of sound that we have today. So, I think that sound from the 60s and 70s, for the most part, would have maybe the bass on the left, the vocals on the right or somewhere in the middle and other instruments on one side or the other. It was a mixed bag. So, while it sounds cool, I think if those guys would use our current technology that we have today they would produce a better fuller sound, a richer quality. Something like that. Thank you! Again, love your voice and your work. ~ Rob

The reason I say that is David Crosby and Graham Nash sing with David Gilmour and Richard Wright during David gilmour's concert at earls Court in London in 2006. During that concert they also had David Bowie singing with them and I think it was David Bowie or David Crosby said " hey 3D" cuz of the three Davids!!! One of the original supergroups. Their performance at Woodstock was only their second live performance. Crosby had been a member of the Byrds, and Stills was in Buffalo Springfield until the band broke up. Graham Nash had spent several years with The Hollies but left due to creative differences. Nash had been introduced to Crosby in 1966 by Mama Cass Elliott. At some point in 1968 they found themselves together and decided to do a quick jam session. They found that their vocal chemistry was instantaneous. Nash took the high harmonies, Crosby took the middle, and Stills took the lower end.

One of the greatest rock songs ever! And it was written about the relationship between Stephen Stills and Judy Collins, who is also of the greatest singers ever! And you need to react to her as well! Her biggest songs were her covers of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", Sondheim's "Send In the Clowns" and "Amazing Grace". But she also writes her own songs, and from that group I would recommend "My Father" and "Song For Judith (Open the Door)" But having loved and followed her for the last six decades, I have many favorites that weren't meant to be hit singles, but still knock me on my backside every time I hear them. You should hear her versions of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and the title track from the album "Running For My Life". This song is mostly ignored, to the point that makes me wonder if it is only on my copy of the album and no one else has ever heard it. By the way, Judy is just about to release a brand new album, her first with only originals! (Release date 2/25/22.) All of this is despite the fact that she is 82 years old! Listen to her sing now and you will have trouble believing her age! She has a range that will stun you.

Graham Nash is English, he has the highest voice of the three. He was the one who spotted how their voices would blend and he left the Hollies to join with Crosbie and Stills, also occasionally Neil Young.

I remember the original 1969 version! I was 14 years old at that time. I always liked Crosby, Stills, & Nash. I also remember Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young when the had a fourth member. Maggie, please react to Voice Play's latest (The Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim). It is epic.

If not the longest love song ever done in R&R it is right up there
And by the way one of the very few Love songs I really Like Listen to it often
My play list when I am out working is very random but some tunes have a play more often then others and when I looked up this ones rating it was 68 Which means it has a 68% chance of coming up if it has not been played in the last 72 hr of play time.
the longer it goes un-played its chance of replay goes up.

I love this song. He's singing in Spanish doing a pretty bad Cuban accent. I'm a native Cuban Spanish speaker and I can't understand a word he says. But I love Stephen Stills giving it a go.

Stills spent much of his youth in Costa Rica, Panama C.Z., and El Salvador. He graduated high school in Costa Rica. Others have said his Cuban effort was for a band mate.

Having lost my right ear I just came to the realization that I won’t get to hear the separation of left and right anymore. At least I’ve got 20/20 in my left ear!

Stills had congenital hearing loss from age 9 that progressed even as he was doing this level of work. He is 100% deaf in his right ear and very nearly that in his left at this point. Sad irony.

Long before auto-tune existed. These guys are great at harmonizing. This is a great tune. The long studio version is the best versions on this song, In my opinion.

Stills wrote this for his love Judy Collins. It didn't get her to stay though. LOL. But still a classic. She is the "ruby-throated sparrow."

It is a classical suite, in 3 parts. Hence the name.

That sound is a small drum called a tabla from India/Pakistan. BTW - Spanish was the first European language widely spoken in America, which is made up of both north and south America, and is still the most widely spoken language in the Americas. In the U.S. alone, which many mistake as being America, there are approx. 51 million Spanish speakers.

Okay I checked all the comments before I said anything. Using your fingers to drum on the body of the guitar is a really common way to add percussion to folk music which usually lacks percussion. My mother played folk all the time when I was a kid and she did the same.

Maggie, love your reviews! It seems that when you comment on sounds being in one ear or the other, it is the reverse of what we hear listening to your videos. We can see you have your headphones on right so either cables are reversed in your listening system or the music audio channels are being panned to wrong side in production, channels panned to wrong side in mixing or music input cables crossed or ??? This is very minor but correcting this would help us stay in sync with your reviews about sound locations.

Great Reaction! The album cover photo was taken before they came up with their group name. When they went back to reshoot in group name order, the abandoned house they had used was razed. So, they used the previous photo instead. Not an expert on the subject but stereo, multichannel channel recording could provide for sound effects, a soundstage, and ambience. Finally, any comment on how the song relates to a music suite?

Just discovered your site. Great stuff. Fun watching you enjoying it. You mentioned The Beach Boys. If you only know the early stuff, listen to "Add Some Music to Your Day" (1970) and "From There to Back Again" (2012). Magnificent song structure, harmonies, and pure bliss!

So many great songs - Carry On from the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album Déja vu would be a good next stop.
