This song is so beautiful that it makes me want to weep every time I hear it. There are some voices that were just made to be together, and CSN are an example of that.
This was the song that brought them together. Stills was on his own with Buffalo Springfield having broken up,Crosby was leaving The Byrds and they were already trying to do stuff together with just the two of them. But they knew it needed a little something more. Nash was looking for something beyond what he was getting out of being in The Hollies. They all were part of the Laurel Canyon scene and at someone or another's house (the parties and shindigs jumped all over the place there...Zappa's house,Peter Tork from The Monkees place,wherever...) Nash happened to be around when Stills and Crosby were working on this. He listened in,asked them to play it again and after the second time said something like,"Please don't think I'm crazy, but could you play it one more time?" And this time he jumped in and sang along. According to the way Nash recounts it,and Stills has said the same, they just sat there in silence for a minute, because the KNEW....this was it. Never looked back. Drugs, personal stuff, egos and all that other kinda crap kept CSN,and later CSNY,from being able to be around each other altogether for any long stretches of time. But when they were...magic happened. "Nearly five decades ago, Judy Collins and Stephen Stills sparked a romance that was passionate and volatile enough to enter rock’n’roll lore. Their private connection became public after Stills, rejected by Collins, put his pining into classic songs such as Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Helplessly Hoping, both of which turned up on the first Crosby Stills and Nash album in 1969. Three years later, Stills recorded another piece about their relationship, So Begins the Task, which addressed the hard labor of accepting rejection. Collins recorded and released her own version of that song less than 12 months later. Then, in 1975, Collins wrote Houses, which finds her haunting the places Stills resides in without her." The song "Wooden Ships" would be a great choice. The story goes the song was written and composed by David Crosby, Paul Kantner (founder of Jefferson Airplane ), and Stephen Stills on a sailing trip. Pretty much any version is good but if you have the Jefferson Airplane Volunteer cut it is all three performing the song together.

Now, even the guys dont agree on the actual details. Crosby and Nash say they were at Joni's house, and Stephen says it was Mama Cass Elliot's. Well, about 30yrs ago, they all were saying Cass's house. And I believe that version. Cass had invited Stephen and David over to meet Graham Nash. She was the brain behind this thing. I think she had an idea of what she was instigating. So, Stills tells the others about this song he'd written, would they like to hear it? And of course they said yes. He played them "Carry On" and David started harmonizing with Stills. After Cros and Stills played it the 2nd time, Nash said "sing it one more time" and this time he added his voice. That was the magic moment when they all just stared at each other, open mouthed. As Nash tells it, he said that was the moment they all 3 knew what they were going to be doing for the next few years. And CSN has dedicated every album to Cass because she brought them together. That's why I believe it WAS at Cass's house. So, anyway, there you have the correct story! Cool, huh? I love it! Peace!

Every time I hear it, it stirs emotions without fail. It was such a pleasure to see you experiencing the things I did and reminded me, once again of those early days of my own music discoveries.
WOW that's heaven. They sang as one. DID YOU HEAR THAT???They sang one part, two, three, then four all together. OMG phenomenal! This is gonna make me look for their box set!

Such a beautiful song with the saddest lyrics, yet, like the title implies, hopeful, all at the same time. This song has played my entire life (I was born in '71), my mother's eyes would fill with tears at times when she listened to this. All of my life, this song is one of those handful we all have that literally forces you to stop & listen, to every harmonized word.

The three members were well established musicians from other bands in earlier in the sixties. Crosby was in The Byrds, Stills in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the hollies. Amazing stuff!
One of their best tunes, a fav of mine. I was lucky enough to hear them live in San Antonio 1973. Ravi Shankar was playing sitar. It was the most beautiful concert I’ve ever heard live.

Regarding that couch: The great music photographer Henry Diltz hurriedly took that photo of the boys right before the album came out and before the band even had a name. This was at a random abandoned house. They chose this photo for the album cover but realized they were aligned wrong by name from from left to right. They went back to redo the photo a few days later to correct it and the house had been demolished - so they stuck with this.
@@sassymessmess9110 Also of note, they put out this album before they ever played a live gig together. And their 2nd ever live performance as a band was Woodstock.

So sad that the band members had such a bad falling out they can't even talk about what happened. I love them so much; they've been a household name for two generations, so it's heartbreaking that they will never play again. I was lucky enough to see them in concert with my mom, don't remember the year but I may have still been a teenager, which would have put it in the early 90s.
Neil Young left his wife of decades, Pegi, for Daryl Hannah. Daryl was once with Jackson Browne and when they broke up she accused him of abuse. David said things so nasty about Daryl that none of the others wanted anything further to do with him

Listening to these old gems with you lets me hear them with new ears, the changes, the creativity. The story I've heard is that Crosby & Stills were trying get something going with their harmonies, when Cass Elliot (Mama Cass from The Mamas & The Papas) invited them to her house in Laurel Canyon to meet Graham Nash (who'd just left the Hollies). They began to sing, the 3 part harmony fell immediately into place, as naturally as can be.

My friend got me on to CSNY and CSN about 10 years ago in my early 20's and I never looked back. The first time I heard this song it blew my mind and I felt the way you looked. Every time I hear it, it stirs emotions without fail. It was such a pleasure to see you experiencing the things I did and reminded me, once again of those early days of my own music discoveries.
I would strongly suggest a reaction to the gentle but haunting "Guinnevere"
WOW that's heaven. They sang as one. DID YOU HEAR THAT???They sang one part, two, three, then four all together. OMG phenomenal! This is gonna make me look for their box set!
They're so good at harmonizing, they almostv sound like one voice.
I too love watching a young man enjoy our music from the 60’s-70’s. I saw CSN in the late 70’s and had 2nd row seats!!!! Never had better seats for any other show!!!! Keep listening to and reacting to their music Jamel!!!!! Thank you!!!!
You should react to Van Morrison moon dance
yes please
Into the Mystic.
One of my very favorites!
Yes yes yes!!!
Oh yes. Van the man is a legend.
Great reaction takes me back to when I first heard the song.
This has haunting harmonies. Still gives me chills.
Still get chills from their harmonies!
Man, one of the most blissful moments of my life was being able to witness these three gentlemen singing into one microphone, Stephen Stills playing the acoustic guitar. One of those moments that reminds you how lucky you are to be alive.
Brings back memories of riding in the family station wagon with my mom. She’s gone now but her music remains to remind me of her. Thanks for sharing this.
In the back? You know, the backwards facing fold up seat. The "kiddy killer?" Me too, man. Driving up to Harbor Springs Mi, with my two older sisters. What did you listen to on your private jet with all those underaged chicks you sold on the black market?
The Angels in Heaven have been shaking their collective heads, for 50 years.......In dismay, envy, and incredible reverance, of these voices..
So. Good. And that look at the camera at 59 seconds in is everything. Thank you for the reminder of how wonderful CSN is. I used to listen to this so much, and haven’t in a long time. I appreciate you, and your followers for refreshing my listening choices with great classics.
That is just such a beautiful song...The Harmony is second to none....One of my favorite songs ...and there are many from this group which is among the top 5 great groups in my book.
Love your music videos....I have a request...Crosby Still Nash and Young Called “Teach Your Children” 😃
This is my favorite song by one of my favorite bands. I love the harmony as well as the clever lyrics and all the alliteration. Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.
I 2nd the motion. Next should be their song, "Teach your children well"
exeter1985 yes yes! It is such an iconic song, playing for change has a wonderful rendition, but Jamel should listen to the original. Might be he’s heard it @ Staples Center.
Agreed. Teach your children
Beautiful and emotional. No wonder they were so popular. Goosebumps.
You might also like CSN's "Teach Your Children (Well)."
More tears inside ..its too good for words ..the skill the skill ...and the love .
NEIL YOUNG:
“OHIO”
“THE NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE”
😈🌹😈
Needle and the damage done epic tune man and perfect story
CSNY's version of "OHIO"
I 2nd OHIO
3rd Ohio, one of the best protest songs there is
Yes!
Isn't that chorus just absolutely magical? I've loved this song since my teens in the late 70's.
Takes me back to my college days when everyone sang along with these guys. (Or tried to!) Inspired a lot of us to learn guitar. So happy for you to discover them!
They were absolutely wonderful at harmony. And lyrics !!!
Add Niel Young to the mix and then listen to the magic.
Neil was a sell out, sad
@@ghostrider729 yeah a sell out that got sued by his record company for not sounding like Neil Young.
@@JDKrug lionel trains are about the only thing that I agree with Niel Young about. He is an incredible artist and has followed his own muse throughout his career and has often dragged use along kicking and screaming. My current favorite is "Old Man" as I get old it is even more poignant.
Oh, A FRICKIN' MEN!!!
@@ghostrider729 excuse me???!!!??? Neil is anything BUT a sellout! Where in hell are you getting your information? Dahhhhhh!
This is music from the soul, and it tugs in the heartstrings. So eloquent and beautiful.
I still have that album somewhere stored away....I would listen to this in my dorm room when I was in college in 81-83.....that is an awesome album....”they are one person, they are.......” my favorite part!!! I just found your channel today....you do a great job reviewing these singers....now i have to go back and enjoy some of your other videos....new subscriber here!!
..the production is genius. How one is serenading your left ear, the other your right...and one right in front of you entering both ears equally.. true love.
The three members were well established musicians from other bands in earlier in the sixties. Crosby was in The Byrds, Stills in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the hollies. Amazing stuff!
Goosebumps everytime. Worlds best harmony song.✌
After "Carry On" check out "Helpless" from the Déjà Vu album. Neil Young sings that one.
helpless is such an amazing song.
One of their best tunes, a fav of mine. I was lucky enough to hear them live in San Antonio 1973. Ravi Shankar was playing sitar. It was the most beautiful concert I’ve ever heard live.
This is one of my all time favorite groups. they are just on a whole different level
You do it every time; I can't help but cry. I hear it with you for the first time and your reaction is so pure I'm as amazed and happy as you are. It is amazing the amount of emotion that such joy evokes. Beautiful harmonies always have that effect, but it's magnified when looking at your reaction. All the goodness and beauty is revealed and it's quite powerful to behold. Thanks man. Thanks.
"Marrakesh Express", "Pre-Road Downs", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Wooden Ships" of course.
The vocal blend is magic, and it is a wonderful song.
"Wooden Ships" & Woodstock" will take you right back to those dreamy days....💙✌💙
Great musicians, song writers and harmonizing singers, beautiful music!
Who's looking out the window?
Drummer Dallas Taylor.
I didn't know that.
@@sassymessmess9110 Also of note, they put out this album before they ever played a live gig together. And their 2nd ever live performance as a band was Woodstock.
@@texcoast44
Damn! It's like they were meant to form a group. Well you probably know this but I just found out both David and Graham are singing backup on Jackson Brown's "Doctor My Eyes".
You picked the PERFECT example! NEVER tire of this...
Find The Cost of Freedom by these guys should be your next reaction
Geoffrey Bonham yes to that, even though I said Teach Your Children... haha. Four way Street live version.
And still an appropriate song for our time....
That one always gives me chills. I absolutely love it but it is very short
@@danapaul3216 why not both?!
Just saying he does 1 at a time.... but you are. Correct Sir! Why not both!
Short, and oh so sweet.....! These were the songs that informed, and transformed our lives.
The eagles singing "Seven Bridges Road" are great with the harmonies!
I'll second that!
Please do seven bridges road PLEASE!!!
The single best harmonies in modern popular music. Nobody else should even try.. Absolutely exquisite.Yes indeed, "That's beautiful!"
David said things so nasty about Daryl that none of the others wanted anything further to do with him
Great reaction...what an awesome song. Graham Nash who sings the high parts always was in the British band The Hollies, David Crosby was in The Byrds and Stephen Stills was in Buffalo Springfield (with Neil Young)
I get goosebumps everytime that I hear that song. There is one cover of that song that will also give you goosebumps, by Simply Years Align. Worth the listen, video also on YT.
Thanks for the recommendation. Just watched that video and it was wonderful.
Please try "Carry On" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young! :D
Hands down one of my favorite group. I was lucky enough to see them in Tampa with Neil Young. It's so nice to see someone appreciate their music
The female version of this level of vocal chemistry is Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton). You should really check them out.
When I think Trio, I think of the German electro pop group... Da Da Da.
YES YES YES YES YES.... to Emmy lou, Linda and Dolly....What a great idea.
No group ever has come up with such melodic and talented not to mention beautiful harmonic convergence as CSN.
This is heartbreaking for any man who's ever really loved a woman who told him no.
I used to lie on the floor with a speaker on each side of my head and listen to this song over and over. It drove my family crazy... Thank you for appreciating this ❤️ peace, love and rest in peace David Crosby
