The arbor elf ramp package is the strongest, but it relies too heavily on getting the elf to untap lands. I went with a more simic ramp package where all ramp is also draw.

I've made several jank builds for pauper. I made a dimir hand control, dimir toxic (poison counters) deck, green midrange, black burn, and blue tron. Its a lot of fun on the cheap.
I've tried getting people around my local area to get into pauper , but most of them just feel like edh is more their speed and feel like edh has a lot more room for creativity. All this being said , Pauper is the format of the people ^^
There's a Pauper variant of EDH, too! The 99-card Library is all commons and the Commander is an Uncommon Creature. Add "Legendary" to the Commander requirement, and you can play the deck in casual games of regular Commander, too

I recognize you from dicebreaker! This is such a lovely video to pop in myfeed. You have 1000% convinced me to try Pauper. I feel like I have so much bulk and I go to all these pre-releases/buy booster boxes and now I have something to do with all this extra cardage. I am fortunate enough to live near a small handful of FLGS that do play this format.
I just proxy so I have multiple 10k+ EDH decks and don't have to shit a fuck about anything other then trying to have fun and build what I want. You'd be surprised how quickly you get bored of cEDH when it's just all available to you. I actually understand why Sol ring should be banned now lmao.
The Magic scene a few train stops from you, shoreham, is pretty good. Gary, who runs KD Games might be worth speaking to. I've only recently started playing Commander but pauper sounds cool. Might give it a go, y'know... just for fun.
I stumble upon here by chance and glad to hear someone is THIS excited about a fringe format I have heard of the format years ago from the professor but was not too sure how to start so I did some digging at an LGS bulk box lol after covid I got a job at a game store and when 2x2 release and Gavin forming the PFP I told boss it is the golden opportunity because barely anyone in the country plays Pauper let alone store supporting it took us many quiet months and multiple iterations of league structures and we gradually even encourage other shops to start hosting Pauper as the pauperlarity of the format is also made cards gain financial value and by promoting the format it will increase the demand of these cards even more and yes after 2 years of hard work and support of our community we managed to get some consistent numbers in our pauper events and many of them are extra dedicated to be part of our leagues and yes the metagame in this format is so vast that it is close to impossible to side board against and there is always that one deck just waiting for its time to shine~
I play Yu-Gi-Oh, meaning I already have a cardgame that I put money into. This means one thing: I cant do that for another card game. Oh wait, a deck for 50€ that stays decent for over a year? Nevermind, that is doable and tons of fun!
There’s a format I wish anyone else played called “toy boat mayhem.” It’s essentially 60 card commander except instead of a commander, you can start the game with two rares and two basic lands in your command zone. Your deck is singleton except for 4 copies of “toy boat” which may be played as a toy boat or as any of the cards in the command zone. It’s so neat! Oh also, pauper cube! So neat :)
I built Walls Combo, Grixis Affinity, and Dimir Terror but haven't been able to play them with folks just yet. I'm looking forward to getting some games in after this next tour.

Pauper decks can be competitive, I love to play burn spells in mono red can be fun and effective I also have a slivers pauper deck very competitive a Naya deck.
Hey know you aren't alone. I have yet to meet someone who has played pauoer and hasn't fallen in love with it. Im a long time pauper player and its easily my favourite format for a variety of reasons. I would love to see some pauper content btw from you.
Brewed a pauper goblin impact tremors deck, had like 75% of the deck in my bulk and basically just bought a couple singles to finish the play sets and a play set of lightning bolts
It's so satisfying getting use out of cards that have been gathering dust in other formats and then realising they're decent picks, even staples, in Pauper
I absolutely love pauper! I always laugh when people ask isn't it weak and boring! Uh no! Like you said Lightning Bolt is to powerful for some formats. It has so much variation and the best part is its cheap enough to have multiple decks! Then your opponents won't always know what you are playing and you can play the archetype you feel like playing. Plus opening packs its more exciting because you actually care about the commons and some unsummons!
been playing standard/modern for like almost 15 years. Pauper is the best format they ever released, you can actually collect cards without it hurting your wallet terribly.
for me the biggest appeal of pauper is being able to play with these broken ass older cards like dark ritual and lighting bolt, theres just something so nice and special about using these old piece of history
Definitely keen to try it, I don't have a huge amount of money to spend on TCGs, and I was real into lorcana but there's not enough players local to me so my LGS dropped it as an event. Quite keen on the Foundations set coming in November for building out my collection a bit, I would still say I'm a relative newcomer having only played on and off for a few years
If you're looking for a cheap list to put together I recommend Madness Burn. It's super fun and pretty inexpensive, the only thing that'll set you back a fair amount are the artifact lands and you can probably just play a budget version without them
I've spent the past several months helming a push to get a weekly pauper thing going at my lgs and it's definitely been a struggle. It's got a well defined meta yet still a small enough community compared to it's massive card pool that I feel like anyone has a chance of making a serious competitive deck.
feels like fun new decks turn up every week! Such an exciting meta to be a part of and see ebb and flow but doesn't leave you with a deck you can't play anymore every time a new set comes out
Some of our shops, have started making tier 1.5 pauper decks. That you can borrow one. They do ask for collateral. But considering the price of pauper.

Building a pauper/peasant(commons allowed) is super fun as well. Emma Partlowe has a peasant cube online that we got to draft and we had an absolute whale of a time
Affinity is super fun but yeah probably one of the more tricky decks to build in paper. Here's hoping wizards do some reprints at some point, especially the artifact lands.

Doesn't rotate... Right like modern and commander technically don't rotate. But every 2 or so years a master set comes out and power creeps the living heck out of every format.

@@cronosdimitri4584 I will say at least that if you're picking up all the most expensive cards to stay competitive, those cards should pretty much always be relevant. That's not usually the case with the pricier formats where new cards tend to be just as costly as the old ones. In pauper things are only expensive if they're old and out of print, everything new is usually pennies

My first MTG cards were a Portal starter set. That was all I had until I met some people in my neighborhood that played around the time Judgement was released. I stayed with it until Fifth Dawn, and then everyone I played with moved away. A few months ago, I found out that some of my family had all started playing it a few years ago. Needless to say, I had about 15 years of catching up to do. Coming from a background of 60 card decks to a scene where that wasn't the main format anymore was a little shocking. The commander games take so long, it's like two hours to a game. It's kind of boring for me. Anyway, I just wanted to recommend Tiny Leaders format. It's kind of a hybrid of standard and commander. Keep up the good work.

Ignoring historical experience is not a good idea. Decision makers who ignore previous experience with cards that are basically the exact same are not decision makers.

We all know that the magic community as a whole isn't very good at card evaluation before playing. People said hogaak was awful. As foretold was gonna ruin modern. You gotta let a card prove itself. Any format that bans cards before it does, is a bad one.
I made my first pauper deck and played an event just last week. 12 Maw. A simic ramp deck built around Collasal Dreadmaw, dreadmask, and The blue one.

Pauper is freedom, I can brew which ever weird fun deck I want and just enjoy myself without losing an arm and a leg

Supposedly original MTG from the 90s was pretty close to this, from all the rituals, moxes, other power nine, etc
