The maternal side of my family settled in Frost around 1901; my grandparents and an uncle or two are buried in the municipal cemetery. When I was growing up we attended the annual “Homecoming.” The town was badly mauled in a 1927 tornado. I have an aunt and uncle buried on the Dawson Municipal Cemetery; so you were exploring my mother’s original stomping grounds. I enjoyed your video very much, thank you.

I'm in England. Love your videos. Great presentation and no nonsense. Video quality is very good. I've loved the 'wild' west and especially Texas since I was a kid reading those cowboy books and watching stuff like Rawhide and wagon train on TV. Love Nevada and Arizona too. Great areas to explore.

As kids growing up in the '50's when the series "Robin Hood" was shown on American television, we all wanted to be "Merry Men" and everybody wanted to be Robin except me, my idol was the Sheriff of Nottingham who was deliciously evil, self- centered, narcissistic and corrupt, all the virtues I embrace to this day. One fellow always wanted to be maid Marion, but that is a story for another day.

Drugs, guns, lack of policing and I notice the statistics are incomplete. The first town seems to be a "manufactured" poor town by that I mean the income does not reflect what you see. People have wealth that they are hiding behind a facade of decrepit front. That reflects on a dishonesty that doesn't add up in the data.

When you have a very small population of less than 1k, one bar fight can raise the crime stats by a few percentage points. Also if you have one or two rich families in the town, it can raise the mean household income stats as well.

Just an FYI you described Prop 47 correctly except for one thing, the governor didn't sign it. It was a ballot initiative so the government had no choice in executing it. Propositions become part of the constituion and the legislature and the governor cannot reverse it. So another ballot initiative would have to be voted for to repeal it. In other words we did it to ourselves.

I'm a retired Los Angeles area cop ( 88 to 07). Grew up in Ft. Worth. The dollar amount for grand theft was about half that when I worked. The exception being avocados. Farmers have a lot of "juice" in the legislature. Crime reporting depends on what neighborhood you are in. Violent crime is widely reported. Theft depends on the neighborhood. Middle class and above generally report everything. Much of Los Angeles is occupied by people in the country illegally. They will report violent crime but tend not to report theft. People in Burbank, Glendale etc...will report property crime.

Under Proposition 36, the theft of money or property worth $950 or less would be punishable as a felony for people who have two or more previous convictions for some theft-related crimes. Under Proposition 36, a person would still be charged with a misdemeanor for the first two simple drug possession convictions but on the third conviction, a person would be charged as a felony and qualify for jail or prison time.

Can’t be mad when citizens start taking the law into their own hands to protect themselves and their property. I feel bad for the business. Lots of people here are starting to move out the city to nearby suburbs in neighboring Sacramento counties because they have their own police force and seem to enforce crime and homelessness

My daughter lives in LA. Many crimes are not reported, even assaults when there is not a major injury. If you call and report it the police may not arrive for 1 - 2 days to get the report. They may not show up at all. Even if reported, the current (soon to be prior) DA's office would often not prosecute. My daughter was assaulted and ended up in the ER. A detective went to the assailant's apartment where she admitted it and her brother confirmed it - on body cam. The DA refused to prosecute. People walk into stores, grab an armload full, and walk out. No one stops them or reports it. The true crime rate in LA is at least twice what is reported.

As a resident of LA this is wildly untrue with police response time. Maybe it just depends on what station is dispatching? Also violent crime in the city has been down. Customers wouldn’t report retail crime but the stores sure do and police make arrests often not in public to make for a safer arrest (so bystanders aren’t caught in crossfire) Because of the security tags and serial numbers stolen merch can be easily trace when being sold.

Adds another dimension to your videos. You may have good reason and I as a subscriber would like to know. Many other TH-camrs that do the same thing do interact with the locals of the towns they visit. You may have already addressed this question as I imagine I’m not the first to ask or suggest it.

The only reason i support Prop 47 is so stores pay for their own security instead of off loading petty shoplifting to police and by extension the taxpayers. Additionally police have more important crimes to pursue, my taxes shouldn’t be going towards petty shop lifting cases. Most smash and grabs happen at major retailers, I guess the ones that don’t have security figure it cheaper to eat the cost. Alot of these thieves are stealing more than $950. Also the $950 limit is just for a felony, it’s still against the law to steal. (Edit: LA resident here)

Frosts downtown also looked like a time capsule from the 1920's, and the 1930's. It is amazing that these empty down town buildings are still standing despite being empty for decades. Bonnie & Clyde lived in the wrong era! I think their highest take was under $1.5k, they hit mostly gas stations and back country banks, of course that's in 1930s dollars so that would be about $28k today. But robbers and thieves can get a $950 deductible? Wow! I must not be understanding some of this, can a robber go to ten different stores and get $950 each, or $9,500 a day? If Joe and Nick's TH-cam earnings whittle they can always go the Bonnie & Clyde route or Nick & Joe in Cali. I don't think I would have the stomach to own a merchandise store there, blood pressure would get too high. One would almost have to sit on top of their store with a shotgun every night, or just let thieves take everything. I know I'm missing something legal element here.

I know I had mentioned something a number of months back while you were in Missouri, if you want historic and a pretty big city St. Joseph, Missouri but if you'd prefer small or dying towns, Dawn, Ludlow, Blue Mound, Utica, Gower, Easton, Stewartsville, Mooresville, Breckenridge, Sampsel, Lock Springs, Jamesport (great Amish stuff), Kidder, Trenton (railroad town with a museum), Nettleton, Wheeling, Meadville, etc. There isn't much left of these towns (the small ones); however, if you look up Livingston County Missouri history, these towns were booming for one thing or another. So if you want to provide the boom history and then compare that to what these towns are now, that may be of interest to some people. And depending, you may get a chance to talk to some very nice people who love to tell stories.

A midwestern town of 600 with a median household income of $78K would have a tiny but occupied and maybe cute downtown (see your vids from NE, ND, etc.). Texas small towns not close to a big city just hit different.

Very good video. I have several comments. First, I wonder why Frost is not doing better due to its proximity to DFW? As to Dawson, I went through this town on my way to Kilgore, Texas a couple of years ago. Also, Braniff International Airways flight 352 crashed near Dawson on May 3, 1968 after flying into a thunderstorm. As to Coolidge, the poles with the bird on top reminded me what was done in Martindale, Texas during the filming of "A Perfect World". Martindale is now a suburb of San Marcos, Texas, but still has an old downtown. The movie producers did not think the downtown had enough old buildings, so they put up poles and wrapped material around the poles that looked like brick. They also built a frame and poured a very thin layer of concrete over it to look like the entrance. Of course, after the movie was filmed, this stuff did not last long. The movie was set in the 1950s and several cars of that era were used. The ones in the close ups had great paint jobs. The others had a "paint the bugs and all" paint job.

Prop 36: California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36 to increase punishments for some theft and drug possession offenses. With the passage of Prop 36, California will now undo some of the key provisions from Prop 47, which voters passed in 2014 to address prison overcrowding by reclassifying some theft and drug-related offenses as misdemeanors.

It's so funny going on a rant about deprioritization of petty theft prosecutions causing crime in big cities while you're driving through a tiny town in a state that loves punishing criminals with a drastically worse crime rate. Maybe the answer is that it's not so simple as just being tough on crime makes communities safer.

When it gets to the point where reporting a crime is not worth the effort....crime is not reported. In addition, when you legalize things like drugs...or de-criminalize crime......then that makes the crime figures look better.
