Peter, I grew up by the Ramapo Mountain Indians which are also called or know as “Jackson whites” in Nj where NY,NJ,CT all come together. I might have a name I can get you. They haven’t been interviewed I’m pretty sure of that. They are only written about by word of mouth, like on Weird NJ magazine. Let me know if it interests you. There is 4 last names in the tribe. I will get you the name you need. They are very interesting…….

Sure, the government screwed them a long time ago, but now all they do is complain without trying to clean it up themselves and waiting on the government for handouts to fix it. They're reliant on casino revenue and passive income which they typically turn into booze and drugs.

For those interested in the field of Social Work, Cal Poly Humboldt's Bachelors and Masters program does a great job in incorporating the flawed history of Social Work in relation with the neighboring tribes. Many of the staff are Indigenous themselves and you learn so much about this balance of power between tribal and local governments. The history is very Traumatic but you learn so much about resilience from a community standpoint and how to build on it.

I grew up a bit east of here, and in middle school basketball the Hoopa were surrounded by a kind of mythos: "Watch out for the Hoopa." They were supposed to be super tough on the court, and we were all worried we'd have to play em at a tournament in Quincy in 7th grade. We never did, so I never got to meet them for myself, but I'm very happy to see a very humanizing portrayal here. It's obvious they're just like anyone.

They moved off the Rez so Dad could go to Carpenter school in Berkeley where I was born...we settled in the Sacramento area. Dad/we are Native Karuk and we have a lot of family history in that area. I have cousins who live there and one was on the tribal counsel for a while. Lot has changed since we used to visit growing up. Interesting to see some of the sights I recognize.
