Glad to see Humboldt getting some recognition, it’s a beautiful place with beautiful people. I'm an enrolled member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, and we lived on the reservation when I was a little girl. I recently worked for a different Tribe with very different circumstances regarding land and economic vitality. Thank you so much for this!
I love how no matter what is going on, or how deep you're into something, you always ask if it's ok before you do anything. You never assume its ok. Its a small part of trust building that has the biggest impact. Great video, once again! 💚
Such a complicated issue here. I admire the tenacity amid this. Honor, respect, tradition is still alive. Thank you for allowing these men speak their views.
How do you come to a land you don’t know see people there invent a contract with conditions you made and tell the people native to that land that you want to split half of it an your asking to split half an then when the natives agree to share there land you import more Caucasians an military force to threaten the natives with violence if they don’t move over until you take the whole land that’s the basis of all the treaties made by Caucasians how is that not white supremacy ?
Your videos are more honest and real than most "news" that is out there who all seem to have an agenda to advance. What you are doing is more than fun and informative, its very needed.
@michaelghgg do you dance around in a deer suit around a fire for good luck? If so, youre delusional too. Furthermore, it's no secret where they came from. We all came from the same place. We're all created by God. It's no crazy, mythological, hidden, pandora box secret.
The Hoopa are amazing and very cool, I got to work alongside Hoopa TCCC (tribal civilian conservation corps) during several Americorps disaster response team deployments. Deep, dignified, humorous, generous, hard working and occasionally hard partying young folks. I was coming from the WCC (WA conservation corps), and we all worked together to help people recover/repair their flooded homes, basically for minimum wage and educational credit
A lot of people make videos and try to vilify our area. They focus on small cases of violence instead of focusing on our beauty and our wonderful, welcoming people.
For real. It's hella surreal to see someone make a positive video about us. We usually only get vids made about us on weed, missing ppl and redwoods lol.
I truly understand the First Nation struggle, being Alaskan Native born raised. What upsets me is they are so land based, pick up the trash. Love the land they all say love protect the land. No one picks up the trash.
No One can pick up all the litter too much. Millions of people littered the lands it takes armies to clean it, also the people do try clean up. . go complain to the biggest litter bugs Government and Big Corporations. They are the solution right!
I would address that to the generational trauma, alcohol and drug use. Easy to say that's not an excuse, I know. If you look at places like India, where they place their priority in god, you see a lot of the same kind of mess.
They seem a lot like the blacks complaining about the ghetto. Sure, the government screwed them a long time ago, but now all they do is complain without trying to clean it up themselves and waiting on the government for handouts to fix it. They're reliant on casino revenue and passive income which they typically turn into booze and drugs.
My father was allowed onto the hoopa res in the 70s. He lived in Etna, him and I have always had an afinity with nature and our Native friends. This episode is the best way to start the weekend.
Yeah that guy he found by my town Arcata, I had no idea about his music or anything. And that guy was a great tour guide, he was a good representation of our area.
I assume nowdays many just approach him online because they know his great work. In the beginning it was way harder and mostly him just going there and talk to people.

Oh the hoopa they make and sell stuff from their tribe in Arizona or New Mexico I bought something about the grandmother hooba being a story teller. I love story tellers
For those interested in the field of Social Work, Cal Poly Humboldt's Bachelors and Masters program does a great job in incorporating the flawed history of Social Work in relation with the neighboring tribes. Many of the staff are Indigenous themselves and you learn so much about this balance of power between tribal and local governments. The history is very Traumatic but you learn so much about resilience from a community standpoint and how to build on it.
You need to come to my area in the central valley of california. We are at the base of the sequoia national forest and we have the Yocut tribe reservation here. It's an amazing place here.
I can't believe I just saw an Exeter wrestling T-shirt worn by Sam. That's like an 8 hour drive south to Tulare County. There's a story there in itself! Great video. Thank you.
I grew up a bit east of here, and in middle school basketball the Hoopa were surrounded by a kind of mythos: "Watch out for the Hoopa." They were supposed to be super tough on the court, and we were all worried we'd have to play em at a tournament in Quincy in 7th grade. We never did, so I never got to meet them for myself, but I'm very happy to see a very humanizing portrayal here. It's obvious they're just like anyone.
I played against them in a middle school tournament in Crescent City. We beat them but they were really tough then as well. They seem to peak in middle school. After that athletically they are no longer top contenders.
The Native Americans where I live (Great Plains) also have great HS basketball teams. Just watching them warm up, they're so disciplined and precise with their shots, you know you're in for a tough fight. They have won several state championships.
I’ve met a couple people from the Hoopa tribe on a few occasions and they always liked to talk and bring the other family members over to say hello. Very cool people. The women had facial tattoos.
This one felt like ten minutes. I was so engrossed. Thank you for these videos. You're my Saturday morning meditation routine. I genuinely look forward to seeing your videos all week. Thank you to the gents for being interviewed. His tats were amazing. The scenery was spectacular. Truly rich.
I always learn something new and interesting about other places in my own country because of you and those who want to tell us their story and enlighten us on what's really happening at a grass roots level. THANKS PETER!❤😊
It just dawned on me that I’ve been watching all your videos and never subscribed, I watch them so much that they’re always on my feed, I finally subbed
With TV comes fake reality, directed by people who know nothing outside oftheir Hollywood bubble. Stay the hell away from TV. Peter gets more views on his shows than the Discovery Channel, anyway.
I always enjoy knowing there's going to be something good to watch on Saturday. And the fact that your videos aren't heavily polluted with commercial interruption makes it even better.
After having seen loads of Peter's adventures, the essence I'm picking up is: If you are open (minded) to other people, there will always be people open to you. This vid is a prime example, just bringing some bakets of apples and getting a worthy view and opinions of other people's worlds. Thanks for taking us along on these adventures!
Sam is a wonderful guide and his ink work is superb. Samuel was also a delightful source of knowledge and realistic views on their tribe and reservation. Thank you for giving us this chance to hear their insight, Peter.
My parents grew up in Salyer and went to Hoopa High. Got married and lived on the Rez, my two older sisters were born there. They moved off the Rez so Dad could go to Carpenter school in Berkeley where I was born...we settled in the Sacramento area. Dad/we are Native Karuk and we have a lot of family history in that area. I have cousins who live there and one was on the tribal counsel for a while. Lot has changed since we used to visit growing up. Interesting to see some of the sights I recognize. Thanks for the adventure.😁😁
Sacramento area here too. Vast difference between there and here. I would much rather be there, surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of nature. We used to have it here at the river until it became overrun by the homeless and their trash. It was my place to walk my dogs, ride my horse, rarely saw anyone, now forget it.
When my grandpa retired he and grandma took their Airstream trailer upto Hoopa Rez on the Trinity for a good chunk of the summer. They got to know locals. When the trout ran mom and dad ran up there and even mom caught a 20+ pounder. Grandpa smoked the meat right there. Grandma made Hoopa berry jam. I got a large jar of both. Best meal ever, smoked salmon right outta the jar.
Around the 23:00 minute timestamp on this video Peter he is discussing how people who work for the tribe steals from the tribe or takes from the tribe and gets away with it I’m involved with another California tribe where the same stuff is happening and nothing is done about it same people running for a leading roll in the tribe or tribe finance it’s truly sad how still to this day us natives are taken advantage of
They are being taken advantage of by their own leaders. I hear the same story here in Canada as well. It’s not good but they will have to take responsibility before it will get better. Canada is doing the same. Our politicians are doing the same to us settler/ citizens 😢💁. Be the solution!
I camped there in the 70's and there was a huge sasquatch carving in the entrance to the tribal headquarters and grocery store and the peoole were so nice to me in the grocery store . Lots of bigfoots there .😊❤
Humboldt County has gone through incredible changes in the last 50 years. Beautiful resources. fascinating assortment of humanity. i appreciate your ability to draw locals people out where ever you go. you show the good, bad and ugly. thank you.
ya, lived on the Smith in 70' s. Hiouchi cabin. Then to Crescent C. Had 1st child on the beach '71. Hah, Hospital was on beach. Arcata is one of our stomping grounds. Mad River shout out..
Peter, Thankyou so much for showing us your viewers the rest of our world ! Sam’s second dad made so much sense! Your tour guide SAM was the best person to show you truly around his homeland. Sam your laugh is contagious … Peter… keep on keeping on
“You must have superior violence” no truer words have ever been spoken. Also to rely on your friends and family… so many people have forgot this message. They choose to not have community and unity. 😑 it’s rough
harold the carpenter built the house he was interviewed in. kitchen light hanging by the wire, back door foamed shut, outside generally trashed... i get that he's obviously disabled, but he has able-bodied people around him.
Loved this video. My mom was born on the Hoopa reservation in 1933 as perhaps the first white baby born there. My grandfather was a civil engineer working building the roads in that area. My grandmother told me wonderful stories about living there at that time.
Your interviews were very well done. You ask really good questions and let the people speak freely when they answer. My wife was born in Hoopa and I have to say you showed proper respect to the Hoopa people. Good job !
Fentanyl is a scourge... People are dying and their bloodlines are going with them... A harsh reality indeed... In a smaller community it must have a devastating outcome...with long term consequences... Sam has insightful knowledge about his tribe... And a ballet dancer too... Wow... The folks who spoke willingly across a broad spectrum of subjects are the most interesting people to listen to... Your host has a voice honed by life... Magnificent... God Bless your special hometown... 🇿🇦
I love you filming different tribes that we have in the US. I look forward to your posts every Saturday. I learn more from your films. Bless you Peter…never stop!
Peter please come to Port St Joe Florida. An old little fishing town growing rapidly. Lots of crazy history. Look up Ed Ball and the pork chop gang and Alfred Dupont, pirates and more.
Thank you Peter for taking us along another Saturday adventure of learning about one more amazing group of people and beautiful places in this beautiful country of ours, US of A🥰
Love how the elders put people on blast that needed to be recognized help all your relatives not just the chosen few if you want to stick to a tradition stick to it completely -definitely not afraid to speak their mind ✊🏽🪶
Gentleman towards the end lashed out and exercised a right we many feel left out or obscured from expressing. This video is so impactful. Thanks a ton, Peter for this, superb channel as always.
Wow, Inker read Mother Earth just right. Lots of civilizations existed before us. These folk know what true riches are. Love this Show so much. I learn so many new things. Videography is also fantastic and I really love the music.

@@Dookies172Come on man, we all know why he is there.

I live down on the coast and it is cool to see how good of athletes their youth are. They take it seriously for sure!
24:51 think about it, they work for the tribe and they have to pay rent . The tribe owns everything. It's a small version of the rest of the country
I love sams second dad. He speaks the truth. Love this man. Hope he gets better.
He was playing with himself the whole time .
I saw that too!!!!
🤮🤢
He was disgusting. He didn't want California's trash to come to them, but his house looked like a messie's house
Love these indigenous voices and videos learning more about them via Peter than anyone else cheers to everyone who let us learn about their heritage
Peter definitely needs to have his own TV show, he just keeps content fresh and always interesting and so vast! Great job brother!!!!
TV is going the way of the dinosaur...more people would probably watch him on YT
No stay independent ❤
With TV comes fake reality, directed by people who know nothing outside oftheir Hollywood bubble. Stay the hell away from TV. Peter gets more views on his shows than the Discovery Channel, anyway.
I appreciate that but this is the new TV. More eyeballs here than anywhere else and I can keep creative control.
@PeterSantenello you are absolutely right, keep up the great work we all appreciate the great videos!!!!!
Sam. Genuine and uplifting. Another perfect guide.
I always enjoy knowing there's going to be something good to watch on Saturday. And the fact that your videos aren't heavily polluted with commercial interruption makes it even better.
I am so grateful for you uncovering previously unknown humanity and history. thank you, peter.
Don't forget he's also coming with a camera
Sam is a wonderful guide and his ink work is superb. Samuel was also a delightful source of knowledge and realistic views on their tribe and reservation. Thank you for giving us this chance to hear their insight, Peter.
Perer is the man! Every Saterday the Family watches together. 🤟
Nothing better than start a Saturday watching your videos. Great work Peter.
Yeah it's great 👍
I love learning more about places we never hear about.
Thank you Peter, this should not be happening to the Indian Tribes.
God Be with them 🙏🏼❤️
My parents grew up in Salyer and went to Hoopa High.
27:03 $3500/mo. vets benefit is not exactly living poor on a Rez.

Thanks for this - once again, you find stuff nobody else does. Or, for that matter "can", Keep at it!
This channel really shows how lame the media and networks really have become. Excellent channel and a breath of fresh air. 👍
Best meal ever, smoked salmon right outta the jar.
illegal fishing no non natives are allowed to come here and fish or take anything off of the rez
I love his voice...like a strong warm hug! Luv from Ottawa Canada
41:48 spoken like a true American. Couldn't have said it better myself!!
Imagine these tribes back in the day before any urbanization of California. What a place it must have been
You get the best interviews. Thank you so much for your content.
I always find it amazing that people think freedom is associated with a physical location.
In some cases it CAN be.
Lots of bigfoots there .😊❤
I love it when you check in on our native villages, each one has its own story 🤙🏽
Humboldt County has gone through incredible changes in the last 50 years. Beautiful resources. fascinating
assortment of humanity. i appreciate your ability to draw locals people out where ever you go. you show the
good, bad and ugly. thank you.

Peter, Thankyou so much for showing us your viewers the rest of our world ! Sam’s second dad made so much sense!
Your tour guide SAM was the best person to show you truly around his homeland. Sam your laugh is contagious …
Peter… keep on keeping on
There's a book written about sasquatch in Hoopa land. Its written by former police officer David Paulides.
I’ve read it. Knew some of the folks in it
“You must have superior violence” no truer words have ever been spoken.
As someone who is Hupa can you interview other representatives, please😂 Inker was great tho!
Hupa and Hoopa. I learned something new today. Thanks!
Your interviews were very well done. You ask really good questions and let the people speak freely when they answer. My wife was born in Hoopa and I have to say you showed proper respect to the Hoopa people. Good job !
Man that part about keeping peoples energy with you! That’s so true.
For some of us, we are definitely much more prone to do that. That’s how I am. It can definitely be a curse or at least it feels like one.
What a great time to drop a video about a place like this. ❤
Sam's voice sounds like Billy from Predator, especially the laugh.

Sam seemed like a good down to earth guy with some great positive energy. Well wishes to him and his people.
Sam, his brother and Inker are awesome, thanks for sharing ❤️🙏🏾
Fentanyl is a scourge...
People are dying and their bloodlines are going with them...
A harsh reality indeed...
In a smaller community it must have a devastating outcome...with long term consequences...
Sam has insightful knowledge about his tribe...
And a ballet dancer too...
Wow...
The folks who spoke willingly across a broad spectrum of subjects are the most interesting people to listen to...
Your host has a voice honed by life...
Magnificent...
God Bless your special hometown...

Fantastic Peter, you always get the best out of people.
What a dude always smiling and gives hugs
Love how the elders put people on blast that needed to be recognized help all your relatives not just the chosen few if you want to stick to a tradition stick to it completely -definitely not afraid to speak their mind ✊🏽🪶
Thanks Peter, very interesting as always. Every video is an education to us all.
Gentleman towards the end lashed out and exercised a right we many feel left out or obscured from expressing. This video is so impactful. Thanks a ton, Peter for this, superb channel as always.
That last guy is my idol! I hope when I’m old and disabled I’m an angry truth-speaking Libertarian like him!
Wow, Inker read Mother Earth just right. Lots of civilizations existed before us. These folk know what true riches are. Love this Show so much. I learn so many new things. Videography is also fantastic and I really love the music.
