    I'm sure I'm not alone when I say, any time I do a search for a particular camera and your face comes up with a review video, it's the first thing I watch (and often the last thing I watch before I buy). You have helped innumerable people with your straightforward approach to reviewing, your great tips and tricks, and your overall production values. Keep up the good work!!

    Fantastic video as always Caleb!!
    I am speechless, the Panasonic S1H is truly a phenomenal camera!!! Has everything you could possibly want in an indie filmmaking camera!!
    The new flip out fully articulating and tilt up LCD is fantastic and so flexible, anamorphic, intuitive menu, amazing EVF, V-Log, Dual Native ISO, rugged weathersealed body (still am amazed they achieved this), unlimited record time, 4k up to 60fps, 5.6k, 6k, 1080p up to 180fps full sensor width with audio with full manual exposure control, and so so much more!!
    I personally think this is worth every penny! In a way, if one thinks of this as a cinema camera in the same league at BMPCC6K, this is an amazing option for a filmmaker that wants a more versatile and complete camera that has everything you need internally (except raw) it's much more flexible in terms of the cameras ergonomics and possibilities for where and when you can film (as this is weathersealed and rugged, along with being very user friendly)
    Sorry, long comment. I'm just blown away by what Panasonic is offering! And so happy to hear they are still continuing with MFT cameras, such as the GH6.

    I have the Gh5 and Gh5s, and a bmpcc4k. Gh5s is great for lowlight and 240fps, even with the crop. Gh5 has '6k' at 4:3. 6k is going to be used for cropping in by most people. Rendering and uploading 6k will be crazy. However; 6k full frame bokeh, looks amazing. All of that WITH IBIS and future raw? This would be a super easy buy, but I just want some lens choices. I have a library of m4/3 lenses and EF lenses. The L mount lenses are sooo expensive. The sigma MC-21 L-mount -> Ef-mount adapter doesn't support AFC for EF mount lenses. However; this still looks pretty amazing. But the c200 has amazing autofocus, 4k raw internal, NDs as well, no ibis, crap low light, canon color science, and it's huge. Also the black magic ursa 4.6k g2, 300 FPS 1080p, 120fps at 2k, and 4.6k fullframe raw, and, great low light, and nds, XLR outputs, but no AF at all. I'll be curious to see how the RAW of the panasonic does. 6k for a 'vlogging' type camera is crazy. I can't wait to see your review of it! It's hard out here in that gear world. Your job must be awesome :D

    • @AndyVNguyen
      @AndyVNguyen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Fluke so interesting to see #grindreel here! This camera has reached into cinema territory, and it’s probably much more accessible to go that route for video. This small-ish form factor is kind of overkill for vlogging or purely photo.
      For me I’d definitely prefer the GH5 for the body size and financially accessible lenses for everyday use.

      Many films are still being recorded in 2K, but what can you do...people want 4K and 6K and 8K, without realizing that it's not such a big jump unless you absolutely need to punch in and reframe. Arri Alexa cameras don't even have a true 4K sensor, they shoot in 3.2K and upscale (if I'm not mistaken on the values). Bit depth and dynamic range are a lot more important than resolution and megapixels, but 4K and 6K are pretty easy ways to advertise your camera as the best, and most people believe that. Playstation and Xbox did the same with their last generation; instead of pushing the consoles to achieve 60FPS, they went with 4K while most people were still using FullHD TVs and monitors.

    • @mrsilveri
      @mrsilveri 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Abe S Depends on what set you're speaking of. A lot do not need anything beyond 4k...hell it's not even really 4k as the Alexa was 2.8k upscaled until the Alexa LF. A lot of the need for 6K, 8K etc wouldn't exist back in the day as people had definite plans with their shots whereas now they'll often use the extra resolution to reframe the shot. So no, they don't "need" it. David Fincher however does use it (among others).

    • @vladimirtalijan
      @vladimirtalijan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    How come you didn't mention rolling shutter? From what I've seen elsewhere that's quite prominent in this camera, and for a LOT of videographers / cinematographers that's a much bigger consideration than high resolution, high framerate, and IBIS...

    • @carlraetzsch
      @carlraetzsch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohyehah I think there are typically two kinds of reviews: tech specs reviews and practical use. Caleb is definitely heavy on the tech specs for cameras. (Ironically, his light comparisons are 100% practical.)

    • @Ohyehah
      @Ohyehah 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carlraetzsch While I do agree with your division of these two types, I feel that rolling shutter is just a big of a tech spec issue as a practical one. The camera can't read the entire sensor for every frame, so you're not only getting weird artifacts, you're losing information. To me sturdy and realistic movement are some of the biggest signs of a professional cinema camera. Fine, even most of them don't actually have a global shutter, just a very fast scanning time, but what I've seen on the SH1 is so noticable I can't think about anything else.

  • @TheUlitamateStunt
    @TheUlitamateStunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the S1 is absolutely the ultimate hybrid, but for people who properly care about cinema production, recording 10bit h.265 at this price point is no longer competitive. You'd be better off buying a BMPCC4k/6k and a G9 for less than this and you still get best of both worlds. For me 6k is still out of my price point but ProRes or RAW is a massive deal, it's vastly smoother to edit and more reliable.
    It definitely comes down to the kind of workloads you're looking for. Wedding, interviews, more run-and-gun stuff, S1 is perfect.
    The BMPCC6K makes sense market and development wise but I find it to be a frustrating camera. I think BM should make an updated 4K with a more square formfactor and a full frame sensor. Nobody is hand holding their BMPCC. The key thing is the price. The 6K is twice the 4K and I don't think it's worth that much more.

    I'm a GH5 user & big fan of Panasonic. However, I need/want a better auto-focus system. I do move back and forth when recording to some degree, and I do most of my video shooting in lower light (lightboard training videos mostly). The combination of lower light work and lack of great autofocus in video mode has me considering a FF with better AF. After all the reviews of the currently available systems I'm still curious about Sony. I don't need another camera, but I'd switch or add another hybrid system that's great (in video mode) for low light, auto-focus & (stills mode) shallow depth of field for portraits. Great review - thanks for sharing your thoughts, Caleb

  • @AndyEngelkemier
    @AndyEngelkemier 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for calling out that crippling BS. I hope their response is just to fix it with a firmware update. Doing things like leaving off a mic jack on entry level is one thing. It's a physical object, and costs money and potentially size. Or losing features that require a bit more processing power where the lesser camera actually has a less powerful processor, well that makes sense. But doing things like, say, 1080p30 but no 1080p24!? That kind of thing just shouldn't be done. (did canon fix that, BTW?) Either add actual features, or find cost savings for your cheaper camera. Software crippling is a real NVidia move. (for those that don't know, the older Quadro cards were actually the exact same card, but with different software. They got in trouble for that).
    We are waiting for the "perfect" camera here. I use my Sony a6000 sometimes, because it can actually focus during videos. And then we use our Canon 60d for shooting images. It shoots nice video, but doesn't work well in situations where your subject is moving and it's live so you can't plan your shot.

I wish the S1 had shutter-angle and not crippled slowmotion, it would be a great compliment to my GH5 as my main photo camera and for video in low light and when I need the dynamic range. Those small changes to the S1 would make it so much better for video and make it a perfect partner to the GH5. Must be an easy fix, but sadly they probably won´t fix it. Hi Family of Tech, I was thinking same and got the S1 (upgrade from GH5) but the S1H has all the features of S1 except price, until I found a preorder deal around same price of what you mentioned. For $100 more, I got the XLR adapter thrown in so selling my S1 with Vlog upgrade included.
      As for the expensive lens, I agree with you on this but it can be solved for with the MC21 adapter. I can use my Canon EF lens (not all) and Sigma lenses which are less expensive until I can afford to get them. Or you can wait when Sigma comes out with the L mount lenses probably in next 2-3mos (I’m guessing).
      Depending on your video use cases, seems like S1 + BMPCC 4k combo or simply go with S1H and deal with only one system. It depends on your use cases. If you need cinematic only (no stills) and don’t care about Dual IBIS, lowlight, af, weather sealed, more gear to get started, and need BRAW 6k with free full Davinci license, then get the BMPCC 6K.
      I don’t see the need to get into pointless specs comparison and get brand struck.
      I focus on what I can afford for the entire system, the ramp up time to learn it, and my use cases. The rest of the debates are futile.
      Cheers!

      Nomad 24 Blackmagic seems a little complicated in my opinion. There is so many people saying how much you have to add on to make that camera work,’ it’s scary. Not including learning a new editing system. Another TH-camr was saying he was selling his Black magic camera because how much storage media he had to buy to properly store data . I don’t know . Currently i mostly shoot Sony but I also got a Z6 which I’m loving. But S1H seems like a great video camera to own. Just the price of camera and lenses it’s a little scary.
      However the S1 came down in price fairly quickly and Sony A7s3 seems will not come this year. So I’m guessing that if for Christmas S1H comes down in price I might have to get one for myself.

      The colour-matrix has been matched to the broadcast-standard EVA/VariCam lines, and the low-pass filter affords more naturalistic footage. The Photo IQ will be slightly better than the S1, albeit with the low-pass effects of less moire and less sharpness. The S1 in turn has better colour than the A7III, but is otherwise comparable, though the high-resolution S1R is at a huge advantage. Low-light performance exceeds the A7Sii IQ noticeably except for the most extreme ISOs.
      AF and response times are extremely fast - better than Sony, though not quite as fast as crop sensors which can usually scan faster. The weakness is continuous AF, which is slow and irregular, though it's clearly geared for MF, with many specialised MF features. The reports of bad AF are based solely on that setting. The X-T3 suits continuous AF scenarios better, with fast AF + fast colour turnaround.
      Imaging Resource has a Performance section of the S1 review with metrics - it will match (or exceed if the processor etc is stronger) them.
