    Thanks for these excellent videos. Hyper brilliant work, sir. Much appreciated. M4/3 had its day at the wonderful start of the DSLR revolution. Oh, how I loved my GH4. But those days are now gone. The S1H and the Lumix S5 are now FULL FRAME, 5.9k RAW Prores, 422, 12 bit machines. There are no more questions to answer. I am a pro, generally rent rigs for shoots, but I keep an S5 as personal just for fun ...initially. I was trying to spot the difference between the Alexa (90k buckeroos) and my S5 which I picked up for 1,400 bucks. You cannot spot the difference in terms of image quality, very similar, but the Alexa is supper 35. I can get more bokeh out of the "full frame" S5 if I want it. I can get more long lens compression out of the S5 for any equivalent focal length, My highlight role off is better, my low light is better. I can frame a shot in a shoe box with a 16 mm lens! These Panny full frame rigs are the second massive revolution in cameras. AND, Panny just gave us phase detect for anyone who cannot turn a focus ring!!! There is just nothing else to discuss save for one thing- rolling shutter, no fast pans for action sequences. If Panny gave us a global shutter it would be time to leave the temple.

    Outstanding review! You cover all the salient points and offer a great comparison to the BMPCC6K. As an owner of many generations of GH cameras including the GH5, and also the EVA1, I think the S1H to be a compelling product. I will wait to see how this product develops, but I am pleased to see this new direction from Panasonic. I would love to see internal ND filters on a hybrid camera, and better AF on Panasonic cameras, but for now I am pretty happy with hybrid cameras. Again, GREAT review, so thanks.

      Thank you so much Dave for the awesome words of support, indeed the S1H is a great camera, a huge leap in the right direction. Of course as we know all cameras have pros and cons which is why many of us end up owning more than one camera. I’m Also looking forward to get the camera in my hands and see whether it would fulfill my needs or not. I just wish they had a better price tag on it though which makes me think twice about it. @@THEDPJOURNEY Your review is very well done, and I subscribed before even finishing the video. You make balanced points, both pro and con, and your use of motion graphics and editing is top notch. It's great to see a video like this that gets to the point without a bunch of opinionated rambling, so please keep up the great work.
      I agree the S1H price is a bit "bold", and Panasonic was probably locked into that price while unaware about the pending BMPCC6K. It is a price point where one has to give extra thought to the return on that investment, or if a cine camera for a little more $ would better suit them. There is also the L mount, which may be a good or bad thing depending on the end user.
      Of course, there is still no "perfect camera" that meets every one's needs, but this is such an amazing time to shoot video. My minimum bar is set at 4K 10bit, and there are plenty of options already. Adding 60P, higher bit rates and better codecs...it's all good and getting better. Now if one of these camera manufacturers would just add built-in ND filters! Even better would be the variable electronic ND filter like on my Sony FS5. One can dream, right?

    Great to have someone keeping it real.... definitely an interesting and exciting camera. Will be testing and considering it as a B camera, but lets be honest- we’re all waiting for the A7s3 before pulling the trigger. If Sony decides to protect their higher end, it’s game on... I refuse to shoot in 8 bit in 2020. Done. This camera would REALLY benefit from useable autofocus for gimbal work to be a fantastic B camera... Exciting times, to be sure...

But let’s wait and see. It might be a long wait

    • @freddumartin7878

      I think we should not expect something big with the A7S3, if it ever comes... Sony just release the $10k FX9 with the 4k60 full frame that everyone wishes in the A7S3, imo it's not coming in the A7 series. Honestly a 10bit 422 hdmi output with the existing specs of the A7iii, a GoPro 7 like digital image stabilization and a fully articulated (and fully touch) screen would be just perfect.
      Anyway, I'm so bored of waiting now, my savings have grown in a year and I'm about to pull the trigger on the new URSA mini pro G2 (S35 4.6k120p no crop in 12bit BM raw and ProRes 444 internally - YES!), for $5,995 ... pardon me? yes it's 5 lbs too, but man...

    I agree with you that 14+ stops of dynamic range most likely refers to RAW photos. Kind of a marketing move. All the footage I've seen on TH-cam doesn't give me much confidence that we're seeing any sort of jump in dynamic range over what's already available.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY

      Exactly... I feel the filmmakers didn’t really shoot something that does the camera justice. And all of them were shot on a gimbal. Defying the whole purpose of how it has IBIS that can be used with Cine lenses.. let’s see when I get it then

      The DR as a specification can be tricky. You have a 8-bit Sony Alpha with 14 stops, then you have this 10-bit S1H claiming 14+ stops, it's 17 stops at RED, while we have the most DR with an Arri - claiming 'only' 14 stops. There is already a good S1H vs Pocket 6k comparison online shooting the same scenes, where it's obvious that the S1H falls short (though you can never be sure if the comparison was executed properly, so they can be misleading as well as the dynamic range on paper...)

    Canon's C500 MKII's image stabilization is not IBIS though. As for the IBIS without the "hybrid", from memory, it only loses 0.5 stop of IS, so it's still 6-stops, so pretty good.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I'm aware it's a Digital IS which is still considered IBIS by the way as it's generated in the body, not in the lens. It's just a different type (Digital IBIS not mechanical IBIS). The way it works is by countering the info coming from the Gyro and Accelerometer. but yeah thats not the point actually... what i meant is how that feature is being introduced in a pro cinema setting, regardless of the type. Ninja V + S1H add 4K 60fps 4.2.2 over HDMI. Though the BMPCC6K is amazing, to be used correctly still needs ringing, external monitor / EVF, batteries so this adds to the expense. S1H built like a tank weather sealing.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY

    The 14+ stops of dynamic range claim is true. Ite an incredible sensor they are using. Compared to the GH5-S, EVA-1 and Sony FS7, the S1H smashes all of them. ( I have not worked with BM 6k yet) Nice video you made. One important thing to remember. Bit depth and log curves are important factors but one that you missed is signal to noise ratio. That is another huge factor as to how much dynamic range a camera has. The signal to noise ratio of the S1H is truely spectacular. (Likely using a Sony sensor like the IMX410) The BlackMagic 6k does not use a great sensor (possibly CMOSIS) and its lower signal to noise ratio is what is hurting it from reaching the S1H's incredible lattitude. Dont get me wrong, they are both wonferfull cameras but everything starts with the quality of the raw sensor output first. Bit depth sampling is second. 12bit...14bit or 16bit sampling on a lousy sensor accomplishes absolutely nothing. (Not saying BM 6k is lousy) The sensor must HAVE the signal to noise ratio and dynamic range first. No bit depth sampling will never "ADD" to a sensors quality. Higher bit depths ony promise to lake less away from it. Lemme say asagin....that S1H sensor is phenominal. Its the easily best sensor I have worked with to date.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cliff, thank you so much for the comment. I do agree the S1H is a great camera, I just shot a music video with it yesterday and it was great. The DR has been scientifically measured actually to be 13 stops: you'll find the article here: www.cinema5d.com/panasonic-s1h-lab-test-dynamic-range-and-rolling-shutter-results/
      STN is surely a great factor in measuring the performance of any sensor. And surely the BM6K has a great performance on that front. The S1H also is performing relatively good. I need to do some comparison tests through to see how they stack against each other. And the bit depth, of course it all depends on whether it's 10-12bit linear or log. It'd be great to have it 10bit log... I wish :) Thanks again for the support Cliff! Hope to hear from you soon

      @@THEDPJOURNEY - Yeah, these IMATEST charts are always extremely strict and conservative. Every camera they test will give a rating that is lower than what every camera company will state. I guess the most important thing is that they state that the S1 and S1H have the second highest dynamic range score of any other camera they have tested. Second only to ARRI. That is the most stunning take away. For me , knowing the Sony FS7 and GHS+GH5-S and EVA1 very well?...the S1H has the most dynamic range "I" have ever seen. It still keeps supprising me! Noise?...I still cant get over how amazing 4000 ISO looks with noise reduction pulled all the way back. I dont know who's sensor they are buying yet. @@THEDPJOURNEY BM6K was measured by the same people as under 12 stops. According to their tests s1h has better dynamic range than ANY black magic camera. Even better than high end cinema cameras like RED, Sony, all of them aside from Arri. So what you say about DR in this video is a little bit misleading, s1h has better dynamic range than the cameras you mention regardless of bit depth and you can record 12 bit externally to take advantage of the superior DR.

    Wow... great review! Learned more here than any other review thus far on the Panasonic S1H. As well your education in HDR & colour depth, bitrate, and what and who this camera is really for. I consider myself a learning filmmaker moving over from 28 years as a Professional Photographer. Now I capture everything for tourism, document people & places, and still able to shoot breathtaking images. I come from the world of Nikon D and Bronica 645 series cameras into the GH series cameras and love them. Other than the obvious lowlight, AF, and limited image size for prints it's an all-in-one camera system that I can easily take anywhere and gives me most of what I need 90% of the time. Look forward to the future reviews on real world testing to see what the S1H can do! My end thoughts are, is it worth it for me to move into a much larger, heavier, FF camera spending this kind of money to start another system, or do I wait another year to see what Panasonic will come out with in the GH6? Ty 🍻

      Thank you so much for your awesome comment. Yeah I guess we live in a battlefield now between really great cameras. I feel lucky to be witnessing this amazing surge in the camera technologies. I feel really undeceive as well. now the S1H announced the RAW recording and I feel it's a very exciting camera. But again the price is pretty high RELATIVELY. So I'm really debating if I really need it or not. Gotta try it out. But in the meantime the GH5 with Speedbooster is still a very awesome camera. I feel the GH6 would be a similar version of the S1H, i mean maybe more 422 10bit formats, maybe higher speeds, maybe improved AI focus. Maayyyyybe RAW external.. God knows. It'd be wise to wait till NAB 2020 i would say

    I'm a hybrid professional using the GH5 and I'm tempted by the S1H but I can't see them selling too many of the whole S line to be honest, especially with the current price tags and limitations. There just seems to be too many market misses between the lineup for me personally and I think they could combine all 3 cameras into the perfect hybrid. Uhhhh, happily, your initial thoughts about the RAW output update option was partially incorrect :) Although it did turn out to be Prores, as you thought it would be, it is 12 bits @ 4:4:4 colour precision :) So no loss there, but big loss with Prores Raw format, because it's still under development, and is basicly still in a BETA version. No ISO or other control like with RedCode RAW- Yet ! I am hopefull this will change.

    As I viewed this video again for the second time I was again so impressed with how thorough you have been in your exploration of this camera’s key features and relevant comparisons to the main contenders from Canon, Sony and Blackmagic. One thing occurred to me as I picked up more info this time and that is the addition of a MFT to L-Mount speed booster and what that may offer.
    One of the drawbacks as you pointed out is that if you want to go native with lenses on this then you’d have to add a hefty chunk to your budget to include a complement of lenses which if you want decent glass would triple or quadruple the total investment easily. But if you can not only use existing MFT lenses and also gain a stop in the process this starts to get interesting given the possibility of full-frame and 10 bit 4:2:2 at base frame rates. Hmmm ...
    I am waffling back and forth between this choice, the GH5-S and the BMPCC 4/6K camera’s for a docu-series I’m producing here and wonder if you have any further thoughts on this since making your video. I know you said you’d be posting a further review and I wait anxiously for that release but in the meantime, do you mind telling me which option you would favor of the above mentioned choices?

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks again for your support to the channel and your appreciation of the details and research that lead to this thorough preview...
      About native lenses.. I guess whoever is planning to buy them is probably someone who won't have money as an issue. Maybe a rental house or a production company, I don't see an indie filmmaker buying this camera with a set of Leica lenses, especially not the first generation.
      As for your question... i personally now tend to shoot more on my BM4K as i prefer its look, and the fact it shoots 10 bit prores. BUT, i always miss so many things from the GH5, namely small size... super light weight... battery life... articulated screen... etc...
      So honestly if I were you, GH5 is more for run and gun, maybe Documentary where speed and practicality wins over final quality, not Docu-Series, where I assume you'd have a more controlled environment. Which is better for BM. Don't get me wrong... GH5 looks pretty good as well, but needs more work to look as good as BM.
      On another note I'm finishing up another analysis about the S1H and their new RAW ProRes announcement via ATOMOS Ninja V.. so stay tuned, it'll be interesting!

    • @reginaldworthington7558
      @reginaldworthington7558 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      THE DP JOURNEY I mentioned this in a comment on your other video but if you did set up a rig with an Atomos Ninja V and articulating screen off the rig and removed the BM screen from the back you could in theory use that inverse USB-C port for output to the Ninja for Prores Raw recording direct could you not? Provided BM do the firmware update for that?

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reginaldworthington7558 Well, the BM USB-C is used as a data cable to transfer data, not video signal. So sending data signal to ATOMOS will make you gain anything, as ATOMOS will see it as data, not ProRes raw Video signal. BM and ATOMOS need to agree on a protocol for that which is what's happening with the the S1H I'm actually about to release a new video covering that subject

    *Hi: As you probably know by now, the compromises you were originally concerned about in this video for RAW output have all gone away. As the output is 12 bit and not 10, plus the stated format of Prores Raw is a 4:4:4 colour space, so any so called, compromised colour information is also circumvented. Also the Ninja and S1H with the proper firmware update can also output 6K resolution Prores Raw, so you don't loose one of the main selling points of this camera either.*

    Interesting analysis. There sure is a Lot of information to process... So many choices today, and one has to consider the long term investment into a system... For me, a mirrorless camera will always be a B Camera for gimbal, handheld on the street shooting, etc. The L Mount system looks very interesting to me, assuming Panasonic's next EVA is L Mount, with 12 bit RAW, and ND and XLR. For me, the RF lenses Canon is making, combined with their best in class autofocus, looks extremely interesting. I expect a 10 bit 422 R Mount camera from Canon next year, so that should be kept in mind. A real shame the Canon C500 M2 is still EF, on the bright side, with EF lenses, on gets Canon's Variable ND adapter on R mount.... a lot weigh up... If Panasonic's autofocus was useable, there would be a lot more people jumping ship...

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah mirrorless could be B cams if you’re talking about cinema cameras as A cams. But again it all depends at what you usually work on. Keep in mind NETFLIX just approved the S1H as a camera they can shoot original content for them. Proving how awesome it is compared to Vatican. In all cases it’s just the first gen... let’s see how their next gen would be... not before 3 years from now is my prediction

      @@THEDPJOURNEY I shoot documentaries, so have need of ND and XLR. So I have my A camera that is the battle ready workhorse, and then small camera for being less conspicuous, or on a gimbal, in a vehicle etc. (and as a backup in case of disaster when on the road, which has happened). I have been using Sony cameras, and one advantage is that all their cameras- from a6300 to Venice-share the same mount, and that you can put any lens on the mount. This is huge. Sony are really falling behind with their video codecs (and their new full frame FX9 is less htan inspiring), so am looking at my options. The L Mount and the R mount will hopefully be the future of Panasonic and Canon Cine cameras. When Canon and Sony make 10 bit 422 mirrorless camera- probably in 2020, Panasonic had better of sorted out their video autofocus, or I don't see them succeeding... Having said that, I am thinking of getting the S1H for handheld shooting with the tons of old glass I have...

      I think its kind of a misunerstanding from his side. The hdmisignal is a debayered signal with baked in values för rgb. While a raw output would use the hdmiport as dataconnection to transfer the raw data from the sensor which would give you chices like whitebalance and tint. It is also not locked to 10 bit. It is probably 12bit depending on the sensor. The portrayal of 12 vs 10bit was also kind of weird and misleading. 8-bit looks great as a deliveryformat for sdr. And if you have ever seen a log signal it occupies say half to a quarter of the signal. Since 10 bit has four times the nuances. One could argue that 10 bit is enough for log to be streched out to a nice 8-bit delivery.

    I would love to chime in a bit about the RAW part.
    AFAIK, 16bit Linear RAW files from the Sony and RED are equivalent to 12bit log RAW files found on the Arri Alexa.
    It is a kind of data-saving method and does not affect the image as much.
    FYI Sony and RED are providing "visually-lossless" compressed RAW, while ARRI is uncompressed, I think that shows ARRI believes that it's better to have a 12bit log uncompressed.
    www.arri.com/en/learn-help/learn-help-camera-system/camera-workflow/image-science/frequently-asked-questions-on-hdr#accordion-44150
    We have to see what will Panasonic do on the S1H.
    EVA1 is outputting 10bit log RAW, I will be surprised if S1H could do 12bit Log RAW.

    10bit "linear" raw cant cover 14+ stops. This is where logarithmic mappings come into play. You CAN hold 14stops in a log curve in 10bit. Many people don't know that the EVA-1's raw is not linear. They only sample 10bit raw values but they log curve them and map them that way. Sony does linear FS raw in 12bit floating point math. The EVA-1 uses raw 10bit log integer math.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

About the dynamic range - I tested the S1 against the GH5 and found an additional 1 and 2/3 stops highlights before clipping. That for me is the reason I’ll be buying it. The highlight rolloff has dramatically improved from the GH5 which is my current camera. Thanks again.

    Hi DP Journey,
    Awesome and professional video. Well thought out and your efforts shows it!
    New sub.
    I’m just starting out so I have been playing around with A73 for stills, GH5 for videos, but upgrading to S1H to do both. It’s one too many system to learn even though there is some overlap in the basics.
    Was able to get on the preorder in UK and shipped to US (no VAT) and includes the XLR audio adapter which I can sell off, making the cost abt ~USD$3200, which is in striking distance to be reasonably priced, especially if you geared up the BMPCC 6k to be relatively close enough (at least for me). Also, the Sigma lens options available now reduces the overall cost of the body. I think it ends this month.
    Aside from the use cases and shooting style, I think the total cost of ownership needs to be considered here as I’m assuming as a pro, ease of workflow to produce quality work reduces the time cost. Other costs I think that needs to also be factored in such as crew cost, lighting and audio, computers/laptops, software cost, lens collection, etc. and really time honored skills and art (i.e. experience).
    Although it’s good times to be in with all the options and new tech, to start from beginning as I am now, it’s a lot to digest, let alone time the learning curve. Trying to average up by taking courses, sitting on countless sets from friends and pros in the field, unless you have a crew that divides the subject matter work and the clients pays for it, the costs adds up quickly.
    From purely video and value, looks like the BMPCC 4k is best value and if you need 6k, then that’ll be the option.
    What’s your choice between the 3 cams, BMPCC 4k, 6k, or S1H?

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, well I actually have the same cameras... I use the A7iii for photos. GH5/BM4K/S1H for videos. There's no camera that's good for everything... so i choose the camera based on the project honestly. I will be releasing a video talking about choosing the best camera for your project and guiding you on how to choose it. Maybe that would help you a bit. Thanks again for you comment and contribution.

    GH5's maximum dynamic range is 12.5 stops when shooting in Vlog. I assume - and agree with you - that S1H might have 13 stops tops.

    • @thebrothersthre3987
      @thebrothersthre3987 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In comparison to the Alexa's 14 stops, the S1 is getting just above 12 stops. The GH5 just under 11.

    Agreed with others comments on your thoroughness in your videos. I watched this one on S1H and the two on ProResRaw. Question ... Do you think the S1H using SD vs CF express is not a disadvantage? I suppose there is no need for the speed of CFexpress? ... but are the XQD with similar SD speeds more robust? It is good there are 2 SD cards with the continuous write and backup modes. Thanks again.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I see it as an advantage as the camera’s write speed limit is where SD card limits are. I do believe the next generation will have CFExpress... since they capped out the speed now and you can see that we need SSD now to record higher data rates

    Thanks for the breakdown. It would be nice to hear your thoughts on Open Gate. That is the feature that keeps me on the S1 rather than long for the S1H. I think the price is fair. Think of Canon 1DX II. It’s a perfect hybrid in my mind. But I think the value of the S1 with very similar results as the S1H is the clear winner for me. I do wish someone would talk about Open Gate on both cams and describe (the way you do so well) what exactly we’re getting with Open Gate compared to the 76mbs 4:2:0 of their beloved 6K. I just shot a whole College video on the S1 in Open Gate and I was stunned at the color, dynamic range and clean signal. Thanks for your work!

    I’ve been looking forward to this review! Thank you for going into such detail & conforming my suspicions. My first reaction was no Raw? 2 SD cards (no XQD)? only 10bit? and of course, the price. $4000 puts the S1H into a different category, with higher expectations, especially Raw & 12bit. If it had perfect autofocus, then it would be super appealing for handheld shots or low/no budget indie short films/ music videos. Sony will release several cameras, a9ii? for around the same price, perfect autofocus, FF & 10bit? 8k? as well as, a7siii, for ~$3000, 6k? 10bit?
    If you want to go hybrid, as many ppl do, autofocus is necessary. If you want to go full cinema, ZCam F6 (FF,Raw) easily beats the S1H. And, now, the ZCam S6 (Super35, Raw) is only $3000! The main point here is, all these smaller cameras have exceeded internal recording capabilities to SD cards. Full cinema cameras have 12G SDI ports for a reason and record internally to XQD, CFast2.0 or to SSD’s. Can the Panasonic S1H use it’s electronic hot shoe to house a new adaptor we haven’t seen yet with SDI? That would be the game changer that turns the S1H into full cinema camera, (recording Raw to SDI recorder). That being said, I’m loving the footage so far & can’t wait to test it out. I’m guessing an EVA2 will be out soon, with expanded recording options, Raw & of course built-NDs.
    I look forward to your testing of this camera, and ZCam S6 & F6 to your testing queue.
    Thanks again!
