Thanks a lot. It a chain alignment tool. You sit it on the rear sprocket, see the red dot on the chain next to the sprocket then turn the wheel a bit so the light is now shining further down the chain. The dot should be at the same place all the way down the chain then you know it is straight.
Thank you for the video...still getting views 10 years on! One thing, for safety reasons I tend to avoid running the motor to turn the chain. I don't want to tempt fate. - 2013 Tiger
DuPont chain lube and degreaser have worked great over my last three bikes for ~130k miles. Rarely need to adjust chain compared with others lubes I've tried. Always spin my wheel by hand though, as I'm not getting my hands near a moving chain/spokes. ;)
Good video very informative. I adjusted and cleaned my chain today on my Xrx as it had become loose since purchase in July 2017. The bike and chain are not as clean as yours, as I use it all year round in all weathers. I don't have a car so my bike is a means of transport on the daily commute. Cheers
I like the Motul C1 to clean the chain. It is a nice product, tough a bit expensive. I agree that it is dangerous to work on the rear wheel with the engine on but it is complicated to distribute the oil nicely if you spin it by hand.
Great vid, however, I would suggest NEVER have your engine running whilst working on your chain, I have seen horrific hand injuries in my time. (I work in x-ray)
Is the 20-30mm the distance down from the swing arm when the chain is pushed up, or the total travel between upper and lower level? I looked this up in the Haynes manual and it’s not too clear. Love the video. Great breakdown including the spanner sizes and torque settings. Thanks for sharing your skills!
Hi MuddySump, congrats for your tips and videos. I have some question about paraffin, you dissolves the paraffin in the water? Or buy liquid paraffin? thanks for all
Great job on these videos man! It is really helping me out with my Tiger 800 XCX. Only thing is I didn't understand what you said you where dipping the chain brush in?
Hi. Yes it's the same. Since it's on the paddock stand you've already got the tension taken up that you should have with both wheels on the floor so can set the chain tension to the proper spec
So if I got it right, the free play of the chain is bigger when on center stand ? So the 20-30mm is on center stand or side stand ? Nice video by the way ! Helps a lot !
20-30mm is when the bike is upright with both wheels on the ground. If you adjust it on the centre stand the chain will tighten when the wheels are on the floor
Hey @MuddySump - quick question. Trying to figure out exactly where the halfway point is on the swing arm so I can accurately check the chain slack. In the video you just say it's halfway between the front / back sprocket. I'm having a hard time locating that point without taking off the shifter mechanism so I can access the front sprocket cover so I can take an accurate measurement. Is there not some sort of mark on the swing arm? There is so much exacting information with NM settings, chain slack parameters (20-30 mm), etc. that I'm surprised it's not an exact mark. Is this an exact point for checking or is it more of a general eyeball halfway point?
I was wondering if you could show how to adjust the suspension on the rear ? I have a 2012 800xc and the book sais it has adjustable rear shock but I have no idea . it feels stiff in the rear . thank you again so much
If you look at it from the right hand side near the top you will see an adjuster that you can turn with a flat screwdriver or an 8or10mm socket. I haven’t got one anymore to show you
qBMOp I just went back to riding dirt bikes for a while but now have an air cooled bonnie as well. Don’t have much time to ride any of them anymore though 😅
@@MuddySump if riding is something you enjoy then I hope time comes again for you . your videos gave me the confidence to work on my bike and the confidence to go farther because I could change a tire and fix thins on my bike . it may sound silly but I believe I can and I normally am filled with doubt . thank you again for taking the time to make videos and answer questions .
Nice vid My DRZ's chain seems way too tight, i get about 35mm play between the sprockets on the lower part of the chain, (10mm down, 25mm up) with the bike on the side stand. But my back wheel is almost all of the way forward, meaning i cant loosen the chain much. Do you think i need a new chain or get another link put in? cheers
Could you explain why you put the spanner between the chain and sprocket while you tightened the wheel nut? I recently had a new rear tire fitted, and the mechanic did something similar, except he used a rag, not a spanner.
Depends what kind of riding you do really. If it’s looking dirty and full of road grime give it a clean and lube. The tyres were the standard scorpions that came fitted to the bike. I never had to replace them when I had it
Hi Muddy Sump. I tried the method you have demonstrated here and am finding my chain has accumulated significant wax build up plus it wasnt nearly as clean as your was in this video. My Grungebrush caked up much hot wax and was nearly unusable after about 5 minutes of cleaning. What am I doing wrong?
I'm changing the sprockets and doinng this of course. Can you tell me the torque setting for the front sprocket. I can't find a solid answer some people say 85 nm and some say like 100 something nm.
today, while adjusting the chain, after unlocking the axle nut and the 2 lockouts I got stuck when the offside bolt for the adjustment wouldn't move. I managed to turn it maybe at urn at best but nothing more than that. I'm worried I could end up braking it. Has this ever happened to you before? Do you have any advice for it? thank you
It's what I fear every time I go to turn them. They are known to seize in. Best to take the wheel off and try it with a socket instead of a spanner. Squirt wd40 on the bolt inside the swingarm and let it soak for a bit. There's holes on the inside of the swingarm and they let dirt and water in onto the bolt.
Thanks. I'll try it. Had both tires replaced with the pilot 4 trail and the guy didn't do any adjustment. So I did it myself but the bolt was stuck. Probably previous owner never checked it, considering what I've found on the chain too. I'll spray wd40 and leave it overnight then I'll take the wheel off and try with a socket. Thanks again.
there's one thing I don't get. when you move the chain up and down, it seems to me it moves a lot, let's say a good 6 7 cm. shouldn't it move just 2 or 3 cm max?
Why lube the chain from the side and outer side?. I’ve heard it’s not useful and only adds more lube on non fraction points which makes the chain collect more dirt
Your practice is ok BUT the thing you might want to edit out or never show is .....YOU DONT EVER work on the rear wheel with the motor on!!!!!! That sure is a quick way to lose your fingers. Lubing the chain in the video didn’t go down too well in the comment section. 10 years later and I’ve still got all my fingers though 🙂
Thanks for the video. Just followed the instructions and adjusted chain on my 1050.
Really well presented and easy to understand. Will look for more tips that I can do myself but nothing to complicated 👍
Another great video! Many thanks Muddy Sump for taking the time to put these up, finding them essential for a Tiger newbie.

Thanks for all the posts! Just ordered my 16 800 xca and these videos will come in handy. Cheers!
Thanks. It's all pretty much the same on the new models too
awesome channel. Thanks for the chain remove and adjustment videos. About to take my tire in to have tube replaced after hitting a nail.
👍🏼 problem with tubes, can’t just plug the tyre
Although I know how to do this it’s still great to watch, cheers!
Great video. One thing to note is not to spray the lube in the direction of tyre, that could be a slippery ride!
I also own a tiger and a DRZ. Thank you for your work and time. Have a great day.
Awesome vids. Definitely help with wrenching on my 800xc.

What are you checking with the laser a 6.00mins? Is it a special tool?

Yea, one minute you're merrilly cleaning your chain and then suddenly you only have two fingers left! not good.

It’s the distance from the chain at its lowest point to its highest point. I just use the swing arm to keep the tape measure in a set position
Thanks for the help. Excellent videos!
Thanks for watching :-)
Great quality vid. Would it be an idea to shield the spray from hitting the wheel? A little bit of card hanging from the swing arm would do it?
Yes can do. Could hold an old rag behind to coach the over spray
They make a good combination.
Thanks

Thank you
Think I'm going to have to have one of those chain alignment tools :-)
The tigers chain alignment points on the swinging arm are pretty accurate already.
Sadly they didnt bother to put those on the '15+ - What tool is that? I didnt hear it mentioned.
very good your videos. can show disassembly of the damper / spring assembly
I don’t have the bike anymore
Great video!
I assume it is ok to adjust the chain tension while on the side stand? As have an XRX Low that doesn't have a side stand.
Thanks!
Yes but just check the tension again when the bikes upright
@@MuddySump Thank you!
You could have explained counter vs clockwise in tightening the chain or loosening it.
Loosen the bolt to push the axle backwards.
Great vid. My Street triple uses a similar technique. Wondering if this can be done on a rear paddock stand as well?
Hi. Yes it's the same. Since it's on the paddock stand you've already got the tension taken up that you should have with both wheels on the floor so can set the chain tension to the proper spec

according to manual: 20 - 30mm of play on the XC, 15 to 25 mm on the road-model
There was a service bulletin out, cant remember what number it was but both models are 20-30 mm now.
MuddySump allright, thx!

Paraffin/kerosene.

+Tomek no. Needs to be checked with both wheels on the ground. It usually tightens when you put it down
