Excellent video! I know the youtube community love unity so it's cool to see you try it out and give honest opinions. The game looks awesome and has that nostalgic retro racing vibe.
I support everything that resembles F-zero, love those racing games :D This one looks like it has potential as well, who knows what the future brings :)
1:58 Thank you! So many devlogs on TH-cam skip the concept part. What's your game about? What kind of experience do you want players to get out of it? Often we don't know, it's just straight into coding and feature implementation.
This video is fantastic! It’s amazing to see how you make your games. The tips you have about testing are super useful. And the game looks sooo good! The post processing looks so polished. I’d love to see more levels come to this if you have the time.
Especially when you forget to set your canvas to scale with screen size, then you realise you forget and all you ui just goes off screen and you have to fix all of it!
Now this is Pod Racing! I completely identify with your feelings toward unity, I think its an awesome game engine that works super well for a lot of people, but it has always felt a bit clunky for my workflow. Great video as always!
I've been using unity for 4 years now and I'm proud of you for sticking to it and finishing your game. I have yet to finish ANY of mine. BTW I also started with construct 2. I made a lot of prototypes that were never released. Kudos!
Awesome devlog as always! Really liked the slick UI, it really pops. Interesting to see your point of view on Unity coming from Godot. I think the main selling point of Unity for me is the plethora of tutorials and assets available from the get go, but it can also be a rabbit hole! I’m keen to give Godot a go at some point too. It’s only by looking at different game engines that you realise what the underlying systems do and how to best leverage them imo.
Hey, that’s a pretty cool looking game! I was thinking… a couple ways to enhance the feeling of speed… a simple, very subtle particle effect in front of the camera that moves in whichever way your ship is pointed. Tiny little specks that turn into streaks. Also, go nuts with the motion blur as you hit those hard corners. Weird idea, how about a powerup that allows you to shoot a grappler cable when you go flying off the track. It could grab the track and sort of slingshot you forward, giving you a chance to keep going. Maybe it’s an expendable. Maybe it’s a core mechanic, who knows. I just kept thinking that it would be cool. Anyhow, keep up the good work
honestly simplicity is key. people keep forgetting that games where very simple and one note, but they had the one really great note that's why retro and remakes are popular and can even really surprise people I know the RE remake did.
6:22 also if you ever make more unity games in the future I don't recommend doing this with the UI since it decreases performance, you should get tweening assets from the asset store (I use leantween)
yeah made a wipeout clone on unreal few years ago. Although i m a long time coder, what I thought would be easy actually humbled me, took me a while to figure out the original one
It would have been cool if you had gone a little bit more in depth regarding how you implemented the AG system and driving mechanics and the whole evolution process to better understand why you ended up settling for the third attemp. Real cool looking project, nice work.
I believe having knowledge and expertise in more than one engine is a huge plus. This way, depending on your game, you can pick the kind of engine that suits your needs better. In my case, If I want to make a 2D game of any kind, Godot. If I want to make a 3D game of high quality, Unity. If I want to experiment/prototype, Godot. If I want to make a simple 3D game, Godot. Next time, if I want to release a game to Steam, probably Unity in 3D, since the experience of compiling Godot is a medicine I do NOT want to take. If I want to make a multiplayer game, Godot with Gotm. If I want to make a game for any console, Godot. Definetely Godot, I dont even want to touch unity for that matter. And Lastly, if I want to make a multiplayer, non-profit game, i'll use Roblox Studio.
Hey, great video as always, your video editing and art style are both super nice! You actually convinced me to try godot, any recommendations on how to learn it?
For someone that doesn't really like Unity you made an awesome looking game. I agree that Godot is far easier to get set up and running then Unity as Unity is quite bloated but its quite convenient to not have to download each plugin so I guess it depends on what you need from an engine.
I hope you return to this and maybe set up an online multiplayer version with more content. I really love this idea and I hope that one day you decide to come back to it.
Nice Game! One Mistake With The UI is that the Text Is Not Scaling With The Monitor So People With A Smaller Monitor Have Some Issues With The UI. The Fix Is Easy. Just Click On Canvas > Canvas Scaler > Check For Something Called 'Constant Pixel Size' And Change That To 'Scale With Screen Size', Then You Are Basically Done. Just Set Screen Match Mode To 'Match Width Or Height' Then Move The Slider Under The 'Match Width Or Height' Thing To How You See Fit. Anyways, Great Game, Better Than I Could Make in a week, Good job!
