Great stuff Starlo, here is a little tip for squidding from a kayak. When landing your squid maneuver the kayak (or control the squid with the rod) so that you are bringing the squid from the back of the yak. Net the squid as it passes your sitting position, the squid will "jet propel" into the net and its head will be pointing away when it lets go with its ink. Tight lines!
00:30 - Choose the right equipment 01:30 - Choose the right location 04:00 - Work your jig correctly 04:30 - Keep a tight line & steady pressure 05:49 - Be ready for multiple squid 07:00 - Use scent or attractant 07:45 - Switch jig colour and size
Great Vid mate. Those Shimano Flash Boost jigs really seem to do the trick. Have you seen the new one with Jet Boost and Flash Boost especially designed for long casting?
Thanks starlo! I reckon the fishing where I am in Coffs is pretty hard to beat, but the one thing we don't have anywhere is squid, well certainly not in any numbers worth targeting. Might have to grab a mate's tinny and head somewhere for a squidding session! Anywhere you'd recommend up this way? (General areas obviously, not secret spots!)
Very true! It seems a bit of a "squid free" zone up that way... Strange, as they get them in Moreton Bay and further north! I think you'll need to head south for consistency.
Cracking info and video mate. One question (I am going for a night sesh tomorrow). What colour would you start with at night (I have light off the boat)?
I suppose I could Google it but I've noticed when people are squidding in the UK they will often use 2 jigs on the one line, sort of like a paternoster rig. I've never seen anyone do it here though. It amazes me just how many different things you may have to try to get them to take a jig. Often they will take only one colour and last time we went they were almost on the bottom which was the first time I had struck that happening. Also they can fire up at a particular time and then seem to disappear again. Great video imo. Thank you.
Good one Starlo . Can you catch them off the beach in Darwin I have never really tried. I think they get them at night off the Mandorah and Nightcliff jetties at night. I have a small whippy 8ft rod and a small reel that usually sits idle 😊
Why do I suddenly feel hungry? 🙃 I have found dawn or dusk with a run in tide are the best times in my area, The most successful squid jig is white with a red head. A very helpful video!
Hey Starlo, thanks for the tips mate. Do you have any on cooking squid up? Do you do any sort of preparation to make them super soft to eat? Thank you! Tight lines 🎣
Not really. Just clean them well and get rid of that second layer of transparent skin under the coloured skin. That helps. If you check out my land-based squid vid (link at the end of this new one), I show an East Asian stir fry method. 👍
Try a tablespoon of sugar in about 2 to 3 tablespoons of oyster sauce. Mix thoroughly then lit sit for about 1/2 hr before cooking (no longer though). It breaks down the tough squid into tender delicacies much like the old kiwifruit trick, but without the hassle.
Hi starlo. Much appreciated. I cant believe i have only started following your channel. I kayak fish the oyster racks of the hunter to mid north coast with hb lures. Is it worth me trying for squid in the deeper spots adjacent to the racks?
Couple of different ones. Shimano Anarchy Light Spin and a couple of older, discontinued models. Anything 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 foot rated for, say, 2 to 4kg line is good. 👍
Varies around the country. As a rough rule, best in the cooler seasons up north, and the warmer times down south, but there are usually a few around all year.
You forgot 1 thing. They are great fun for kids, especially when they are learning and get bored. No spikes, teeth, or barbed hooks so a little bit safer. And it's always fun watching them get ink over everything and everyone, until the boat owner has to clean it, but that's what we do it for right?
@@sportsfanivosevic9885 That's unfortunate and rare. It can happen. I'm not entirely sure how, but possibly inattention or incorrect handling. We learn every day.

Thanks, Roger!
Thanks Starlo. Literally mouth-watering...
My pleasure 😊
It is good to hear your voice again Starlo ,brings back memories THANK YOU.
Thanks for watching & listening! Tight Lines. 👍
Nice one mate, I think the use of a good spinning rod helps immensely. Thanks starlo for another great one.
Cheers!
Nice production Steve! Great shots and edit! :)
Thanks mate. I’m working hard on lifting my production values this year. Time to take it to the next level. 👍
@@StarloGetsReel Yes I'm doing that too mate, more competition so got to raise the bar!

Thanks! Yes, the ones we were using here had that. 👍
love catching cooking and eating of course especially the arms and legs not the tubes. asian style with peppers and chilly with lemon and lime juices.
Agreed! I think that’s my favourite part and method, too.

I haven’t done a lot at night but my instinct tells me a dark pattern, for silhouette. 👍
i loved the new video format me myself caught my first squid the other day great advice

I know they get them off the jetties, not sure about the beach. As you say, mostly at night.
@@StarloGetsReel ok thanks Starlo I might give it a try off the beach early morning sometime.

does Shimano Sephia flash boost rattle in blue colors e.g t mackerel or t sardine work in your experience, Starlo ? thanks
Yep. Seems like they ALL work really well!

How long do you give the change up before the change? 1 hour or less? I normally give it 30mins if I dont hook up again after the initial catch
Yep. Sometimes even less. Maybe 20 minutes.
