GEAR USED: Reel is a 2500 Shimano Vanford spooled with 10 pound braid. Rod is a 10 foot Shimano Dialuna. If you'd like to learn more about this brilliant rod, check it out here: th-cam.com/video/UiToUDNCkqk/w-d-xo.html If you want to watch that earlier episode mentioned, about not casting OVER the fish when surf or beach fishing, here it is: th-cam.com/video/6Bq3LAe8FQs/w-d-xo.html
Starlo….I would never presume to question your knowledge of fishing but to a Victorian beach angler those conditions are sensational. Genuinely love your piece of Australia. Thanks for sharing Starlo.
Thanks Starlo. I have done exactly that mistake when I was younger. Not any more ! I have a boat now and that tip is equally relevant for ocean fishing - thanks again for taking the time to make this video in 'rubbish' conditions!
Watching your videos is causing me to want to go fishing. Many years ago when I lived in NZ, I twice went fishing with friends and caught fish both times. Now living in the U.K., I haven’t thought of fishing until I started watching you and Roger’s videos but the weather tends to keep me indoors.
Spot on Starlo, that's definitely my number 1 pet peeve. If I didn't have to wear glasses, I would have probably lost both my eyes by now, as it can get dangerous when people start wielding their rod around a small boat because they wound the line too much
Steve stirling I remember you when I was a child fishing for trout and as a guest of rex hunt days when he had hair lol you used to make fantastic movie for trout
Enjoyed the video. Tough conditions to fish though. But indeed, this was a problem with Alvey reels on the beach, if one was not paying attention. The grinding and gritty feeling when reeling in, was a dead set giveaway. PVC pipe was a godsend for fishos. I have a piece of 50cm PVC pipe with string attached to it. I have it around my neck if i have to move away from my rod holder. Keeps the reel off the sand if have to get hooks out. Cheers.
Another mistake i see most people do is when casting they point there reels up towards the sky and cast against the back bone of the rod , I have even seen a guy that broke his rod doing this . Great tip Steve 😉👍
So many people have learned how to cast from some older person. They take their hand off the reel stem and use very little bottom hand. They have problems casting to the edge and snags. There is no control. Because they have done it for so long they often literally can't stop doing it. Like right handed people winding with their right hand. A real handicap for cast and retrieve fishing.
I would extend that to being thoughtless with gear in general. I don't allow my rods to come in to contact with anything. Carbon and ultralight rings don't take knocks well. My reels never touch sand or water for obvious reasons. You see all sorts of things, sinkers on rods bouncing around in boat rod holders; rods piled up like firewood; rigs wound up to the tip ring etc. Then people complain when gear fails at a critical moment! However, the biggest mistake I see is fishing the wrong time of day. In my locality, a lot of people are launching their boats as I'm coming back in. By this time, the wind has usually picked up and the fish have gone off the bite.
That really surprised me. I thought it was common sense NOT to wind the rig up to the rid tip. And as for holding the hook/bait under tension....really? I guess that's how some people get themselves in trouble!
I was thinking that 💩 hawk as we call them ( seagull ) was gonna nick you camera there for a minute Starlo there cunning little Devils 😂 that’s very true I see a lot of people winding there rigs up high it looks so awkward! Some great advice and some nice fish to 🎣👍
When you lend gear and they say I thought it was waterproof 😢 One of the most dangerous mistakes I have seen fishermen do especially land based on piers or pontoons is that they lay down their fishing rod flat beside them to put bait on the hook and then someone walks past and then accidentally knocks the rod even stepping on reels and rods breaking them. The same applies when someone is baiting someone else's hook and then the other person decides to move the fishing rod. These are common mistakes that unfortunately end up with hooks in fingers.
20 seconds in I'm going to guess casting to the horizon but I'm prepared to be humbled. 7:00 Like I said, humbled. Honestly that never even occurred to me. I see people do it all the time but I learned not to wind right up so long ago that it is a lesson I've long forgotten
Yep, I think that's the problem... those of us who know NOT to do it just take it for granted that everyone else knows, too. But they don't! i see it SO often.
If you think that swell is big you haven't done much beach fishing,l prefer a bit of bump to a flat sea,and as far as braid on the beach it's not needed stick with mono.
Sounds like you've got all the answers. ;) I've actually done a fair bit of beach fishing over the past 50 years or so. I prefer a bit less swell than that. I pick my days and usually avoid those ones. I also prefer to use braid for most of my fishing these days. Personal choice. Each to their own, eh?
I noticed that Japanese shore anglers wear tights under their shorts and higher footwear. I got stung recently. 😂 It wasn't the pain so much as the itch later on.
Lose the reel problem get a Alvey the only reel for the beach if you really want to catch fish number 1 source your bait where you're fishing from and don't wash your hands with strong smells or put sunscreen on then touch your bait
@@stuartpinder3807 fair enough. I fished for many years with Alveys. Great reels. Must say though, these days I prefer my spin reels for those applications, but each to their own. 👍
The biggest mistake is people doing the same thing every time they go fishing. They think all they need is a secret spot. They simply don't LEARN how to fish! Fishing magazines are seen as eye candy , not reference material.
@StarloGetsReel Fishing magazines were 15 years ahead of anything one would see on TV. There is not much I see on TH-cam that advances my fishing as much as the magazines did.
@ I tend to agree although there’s also some pretty good stuff on TH-cam if you can find it. I miss the magazines too, but sadly, most have gone the way of the extinct do-do. 🫤
@@StarloGetsReel My introduction to you was in Freshwater Fishin and Fishing World back in the early 90s. I miss magazines and books, they really were the way to really learn. Bethune on Bass was one of the best things I have ever read.

The other big mistake is fighting against the fish. Let them run and don't fight them till they stop
