Your personality and your brain | Scott Schwefel | TEDxBrookings

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We all have a unique personality, but we also show up to others in ways we don’t know. Understanding how our brains become consciously aware of ourselves, and in turn, everyone else teaches how we can connect, adapt and ultimately influence others. It all starts with knowing when we are truly self-aware, and when we aren’t, how to get there quickly and easily.
    Scott Schwefel built and sold Minnesota’s largest technology training company. To get there he used personality assessments to help his people understand each other and understand clients and customers. His study of personality led to an awareness of brain science and how our brains enable us to communicate with each other. Scott has taught these principles of brain science and communications techniques throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and to over 1300 CEOs globally.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    I always internally scream in frustration. If I move too fast then my thinking process lags behind and I find myself doing some stupid things that could've been avoided if I thought about it a little more! #worst _nightmare

    I've known about MBTI for many years and studied it extensively. I often introduce people and new friends to it, partially to try and understand where they come from and partly as a party favor - it's fun and interesting. Over the years, I've come across the issue that many people don't like being "put into a box" and being "defined" or "confined." Indeed, most people don't like being told that they have limitations, having been told for their entire lives that they can do "anything they put their minds to."
    I put those concerns to rest by simply explaining that, "this doesn't define you - you define it." That is, you define yourself. What MBTI tells you is, where you are in relation to everyone else in the world.

I've become cold, indecisive...paralyzed for over 1 year trying to find myself and what I ought to do...I thought too much, I've abused what I do best and that can lead to depression. I believe, that we cannot be good partners, parents, managers, or friends without self-awareness and basic knowledge of differences in personalities. Personalities are influencing our value system, reactions, and perceptions and they deeply differ.

    I seem to be a cross between yellow and green, leaning more towards yellow but only slightly. Interestingly enough, this is consistent with my past personality types - I went from INFJ to ENFP. So this cross makes sense in that I remained Feeling, but moved from Introverted to Extraverted. Very interesting

    Surely we should be asking:
    What energy do I need to bring in this moment?
    It’s like love language, knowing who you are and knowing the energy of others so we can communicate more effectively in each moment. Be present, be more effective.

      But you might be from a certain type pace, and you represent none! In fact, you might want to separate yourself from that place ideologies/identities/cultures because you feel different. Some people feel they're born in the wrong body, some feel they're born in the wrong land. That's why categorizing them is like rooting them to specifications they don't represent at all.

      I think some people don’t want to be categorized in the wrong way and don’t know how to move forward. Because while some are hasty about assumptions of a persons character, that person itself feels that they are not truly being understood and don’t live up to expectations.

    I agree with what Scott says since this little talk teaches us many things, and one of them is self-knowledge, how we could define our personality even if it seems impossible. Scott also says that we should not judge people because yes, we must know them and know how to appreciate their personality, we must treat them in the same way that we would like to be treated and depending on their mood, we must know that our brain is a machine of ideas that works 100% daily.
    I, I identify with the color yellow since I consider myself a calm person in several aspects and I do not seek to harm others, rather I am a sociable person and I like to be empathized with the people around me.

    5:52, 12:53 The more I read Personality Type models and reflect upon the dynamics of social interaction, the more I come to realize the main issue with interpersonal relationships is one of lack of knowing thyself. As already suggested in this talk, reality is tightly coupled to perception, that is you can only truly know the other if you know yourself. The lack of compassion and understanding of differences is an accurate reflection of a culture that has become imbalanced by focusing on looking outwardly (analysing and judging others) instead of looking inwards (understanding yourself),first and foremost.

    The problem with a model like this could be demonstrated with a little experiment. If you let a group of people choose with what colour he/she identifies, on average you should find that 25% identifies with blue, 25% with red, 25% yellow and 25% green. Now if you let a different group choose between colours, but this time you leave 2 colours out and you only let them choose between blue and red for instance. On average you should find that 25% identifies with blue, 25% with red and 50% shouldn't identify with either. My guess is that this 2nd scenario wouldn't happen. I believe the majority of the group (if not all) would identify with either blue or red. You are given a certain amount of information and then you identify with that information, disregarding the possibility that you might not have been given all of the information. Who's to say that there aren't more colours to choose from with personality traits not included on this list? Stay critical beautiful people!

    • @ssj5goku999
      @ssj5goku999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      If you're forcing them to choose between two categories, people will pick which ever they identify with the most. This model isn't subjecting you to picking a specific group. In fact, it shows how the groups are not defined with bold lines, but blurry ones. At one point, the speaker labels the borders between each group, as well as the groups themselves. Humans are complicated, and everyone possesses traits from every group, yet its likely they'll primarily identify with one of the four groups.

    • @walterries7941
      @walterries7941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      JayBee, the problem with your experiment that if only given two choices, people will pick the closest fit. A green person might say, "Blue doesn't really describe me, but I am more introverted, so I guess I'll pick Blue". So, in your experiment 50% will pick blue and 50% will pick red. If you give them an option of "none of the above", then you no longer have 2 options, and you might find that people will pick 25%, 25%, and 50% (for none of the above).
      In fact, when asked, many people cannot choose between the four options, as they exhibit traits from all four areas. We all do. This is just a model on which is your "preferred/habitual" mode of interacting, not a categorical determination of behavior.

    One of the best TED Talks I have seen so far and I watch quite many...
    When I saw the first image I instantly paused and read all the field and was like: Yeah, obviously I am red!
    After a few seconds, it came to my mind I should think over this again because I also could be blue. The following graphics proved my point to me even further. It was alway that way, that the only thing I was sure of, was that none of the bottom colours fitted me even a little but my partner is that yellow kind of person that would make me totally furious if a person like that(except for my girlfriend) entered the elevator.
    Conclusion:
    60% Blue + 40% Red! I just love getting stuff done!

      In a way you can. Especially when you follow Jung's approach, who was opposed to absolute categorization. That was never his intention. He would probably say that it's likely you are either _more_ blue or _more_ green, but some people are more of a mix than others. Also, it's very possible that you shift at least to some degree throughout your life into one or more other type(s).

    Wow! This is extremely compatible with carol title's energy profiling work, child whisperer, dressing your truth, my beauty profile, it's just my nature, etc.
    Great ted talk.
    I'm a dominant earth green (carol tuttle calls it type 2), with a secondary type 4 (cool blue). She says we each have a dominant and a secondary, and bits of the others.
    Learning this about myself and now others has been life changing!
    And now my outsides represent my inside energy as well due to dressing your truth. If you're light and bright and happy,... or fiery red, you will feel so much happier if your outside appearance matches that!
    I also understand how to treat others according to their type now. I see people for their gifts, finally, and I understand their needs and faults more. I criticize them less.
    Thanks for this ted talk Scott Schewfel! It was a great insightful presentation. And a bit funny, nice jokes.
