    You never put grease in a pilot bushing cause they are self lubricated.

    The 1996 GM service manual is pretty clear: no thread lock on the flywheel bolts. Creates quite the dilemma.

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s interesting. I’ve only ever seen that thread lock should be used. The only difference I can think of between the early and late sbc for the flywheel is switching from the two piece rear main seal to one piece which changed the flywheel bolt pattern. Maybe they changed their stance at that point

    I'm just a do it yourself-er... Wouldn't it be best to put the pilot bearing in first ? More room to work and less chance to get spooge on the flywheel. Thanks, nice job on the video !!

      Yes, that actually makes a lot of sense. I’ll make sure to do it in that order next time!

    So I found the bronze bushing its ID is small the alignment tool wont fit , I am questioning the out put shaft will fit . So I am grabbing a re-emerging and opening the hole.

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several different sizes of pilot bushings. If it’s a large difference I’d just make sure to buy the right one

    • @scottherbert4558
      @scottherbert4558 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the bushing was crushed .... thus making the ID small. I have a replacement bushings already. It fits the input shaft no problem.

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would do it. Good thing you didn’t try to force it and make another problem

    thanks for the video man , i have a 73 Charger 400 big block with 4 speeds , i have a bad vibration , thought it was the driveshaft it wasn't .i have vibration when i raise my RPM standing still , could it be the flywheel ? also i have a very stiff clutch
    pedal and vibrating when launching

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be something loose on the flywheel or clutch. I think that’s probably the first place to look at

      I do t have that. I just got it from O’Reilleys. It’s a late block so it’s a one piece rear main seal too

  • @donkeydiehard879

    I think it's worth mentioning that the pilot should be pressed all the way to the lip. Reason being, that insures the pilot bearing is true and straight. Its press fit so it can be close but you're talking about thousandth of an inch that matter in this instance.

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, sometimes that extra thousandth of an inch can be the difference to be within tolerance or not. That would be a small mistake that would take a lot of time to fix!

      If using a pilot bearing which way do the needle bearings face towards the block or away?

  • @Tony-tk4ht
    @Tony-tk4ht 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should it spin inside?

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. A bushing should not spin inside the crankshaft. The input shaft of the transmission will spin inside the bushing though.

    Why not fix the oil leaks?

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m not really concerned with a spot on the floor and I check the oil every time I fill up with fuel so I’m not worried about it getting low. I’m also building a new engine for it now

      Looked like a valve cover leaking down, or the rear main seal. Nice truck.

    What's better a bushing or bering?

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Newer transmissions will typically use a bearing but older ones used a bushing. A bushing is very forgiving and will last for me as long as I have the car so that’s why I use a bushing

    • @iowadiy6361
      @iowadiy6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never used a needle bearing, but if there’s a flat side on the bearing that would be meant to be pressed in flat against a surface. A round side would be on the outside

      I’ve heard it both ways and I understand the logic behind both thoughts. I’m not sure which one is right, but I haven’t had a problem yet with adding just a little bit of grease
