Thanks. I saw this video a while back and hadn't really thought about it again. I ran into the same situation earlier this week. I work in plant maintenance and the line was ready to go back up soon. I was trying all kinds of stuff. I was starting to get worried until I remembered this video. This bearing was oxidized bad too. I thought there was no way this could work. I did it and it worked like a charm. You really helped me out of a bind.
Thank you so much for this tip, I tried it on a pilot bearing that is pressed into a crankshaft, and it worked like a charm! Amazing technique. Grease would never work, it would just be pushed out through the balls without doing anything. Great tip, one of the best I've seen in the automotive world.
Unbelievable, huh? I was so relieved when I finally had enough bread jammed in to finally see the bearing move. Yeah, this is the way to get your pilot bearing out..
This works 100 percent. You just need a TIGHT fitting bolt, or an old clutch alignment tool works wonders. I broke 2 pullers from autozone, and tried a grease gun...this was the best thing...since sliced bread.
This freaking works! Thanks for the video. Although I was so excited I told my wife about it and she said oh yeah I've done that before making this highly accomplished mechanic feel dumb but in all fairness she used to rough in electrical on houses and lay tile!
Mate i have to thank you. This video is absolutely brilliant and sorted our problem yesterday removing this bearing from a Subaru. Genius. Keep these types on f videos coming...
Works GREAT on pilot bearings that are too small for pilot bearing pullers. Also, it’s much easier to fill it behind the bearing with bread than it is with grease.
Dude - I owe you a beer! I have been struggling to get the pilot bushing out of my 1950 Chevy (engine in the car, bushing in the crank not the flywheel). Without success I tried two different pilot bearing pullers and even tried threading a bolt into the pilot bushing to use a homemade puller, bushing didn't even budge. I was skeptical when I watched your video, but I was also out of ideas. I ground the threads down a bit on a 7-inch long 5/8-inch bolt to match the ID of the bushing (I could easily rotate the bolt in the bushing but not wiggle it l back and forth). I think I pounded an entire slice in and then switched to a bigger hammer. Low and behold after a few hard blows with the bigger hammer it started coming out! And to top it off now my engine is fortified with 8 essential vitamins! In all seriousness thanks for a great video!
Anyone that thinks this might be crazy, it absolutely works. I remember my brother calling me for help finishing up a clutch job on his Jeep. We then realize we don't have a puller for the pilot bushing. I do some quick Googling, find this method, and my brother was like "I don't have any bread." I look over at the remnants of the Arby's sandwich I had lying there and pull the bread from it, and within a few minutes the bushing was out and we were going back together.
I tried the same thing with grease and couldn't get it. Watched this video and switched to bread. Worked just like the video! Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it!
WARNING!!!!! You MUST make sure your engine does not have a gluten allergy. If it does and you use bread with wheat in it ,your engine will have problems.
Brilliant !! I used this idea as far back as 1955 yes I'm an old dog. But so good that you have taken the time to explain it to the next generation If and only if you had a very accurate pilot you could use grease as I once did but cleaning it up away from the plate was a drag. Bread is good Thanks for the upload
there's another trick in a similar vein to this video, extremely useful for loosening or tightening crank pulley bolts: wrap the longest old v belt you have around the accessory pulley that's the shortest distance from the crank, then shove the excess slack in between the pulley grooves and the belt in the direction you need to turn the breaker bar in. you can then loosen or tighten pulley belts without needing any special tools besides a breaker bar, or a floor jack handle on top of a breaker bar.
@@AmosHayes th-cam.com/video/BTysmAxU_nw/w-d-xo.html skip to 0:27 though, it has an insanely long intro. when loosening with a breaker bar, try to jerk it, instead of applying constant force. Nuts and bolts are much less likely to break or strip with shock loads, which is why hammering/jerking/yanking a tool that's on a fastener is better than just trying to twist it off like you would a screw cap container.
If you look at that pilot bearing it looks like it's brand new it was just installed so it might be easier to come out but I've done it many a times and I had to buy the tool cuz it's the easiest way that breath it doesn't always work
haha love it, I tried this with grease years ago and failed as the grease was too thin and it just squirted out, I can see that moist bread is much thicker and doesn't escape when hit like the grease can! Using bread as a hydraulic fluid is pretty cool and I can name another use for soft bread for auto repairs which is pushing it into a LEAKING RADIATOR, it can stop the leak and get you home and I heard a story from someone who continued to drive the car for a few thousand miles without it leaking before the rad was replaced :-)
Old fart here, helping a youngster. I told him about the bread, he didnt believe me, so I showed him this, and filmed him accomplishing same. I told him to pre chew his bread a little...it was a fun day. thanks. your vid much better than mine. its amazing how cuss words find a camera.
The last time I had to do this job I grabbed a handful of paper from my shredder and put it in a bucket of water. I used the bread for my sandwich and when finished I packed the bearing cavity with soggy paper and followed the rest of your instructions.
To remove pilot bearing one can use candle wax the more harder the wax the better I tried this technique and it really works for my Activa Honda scooter which is in side the rear wheel assembly.
only if it's expired bread. I hate wasting food. This can be done using wet paper as well. soak em shred em and pack the hole and repeat the shown process
Years ago these bearing was called a spigot bearing, nothing as solid as your one but how we got the bearing out was fill the hole up with Greece same thing get a good fitting bolt and hit with a hammer, and the grease would push it out as the same as the bread, good video and nice to see different ways kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍
Do not worry,if they find out the trick, will sell and the bread to the garages for 1000$ a piece with 10 slices, that's 100$ per slice. plus you get a lifetime warranty,
I understand why the upload is needed. To educate those that DONT know this. Any technician worth their salt would have known this trick already. Good production though otherwise with clear instructions for the noobs.
In your comment you established a foundation of argument so that you could pat yourself on the back for allegedly knowing this "trick". You have a self-esteem problem.

As long as they're double sealed/shielded bearing. I've tried this bread method (or grease, wet paper, etc) on single shielded bearing (shield facing up obviously) and the bread just push the metal shield off the bearing.

Basically just a hydraulic piston. I learned this trick decades ago. Although it will work much better with something that fits better than a screw. Its also great for removing broken pins. Just need to drill a small hole in the center, and pound in a pin the right size.
Just used this technique to remove the pilot bearing from my 914 engine. Grease did not work as it shot out the sides of the bolt. Bread on the other hand worked perfect. Literally less than 2 minutes, a single piece of cheap garbage white bread. No mess, either.
Wish I had seen this 50 years ago. So simple but so effective! Thanks!
Is this for real, and does it work?
Gotta try this😀

Grease does work ive done it plenty of times. Spiggot bearings are sealed. Not saying that bread doesnt work though.
You can use candle also.
This actually worked! Bread is much cheaper than a slide hammer. Made my day
Unbelievable, huh? I was so relieved when I finally had enough bread jammed in to finally see the bearing move. Yeah, this is the way to get your pilot bearing out..
F-ING GENIUS!!! This alone made the entire internet worthwhile
I tried it and can't believe it. IT WORKS! saved me a trip to the tool shop and 69 bucks. only took a whole 3 min. WOW thanks for the video
Stuff with bread, hammer, and repeat. Sounds like my last 20 relationships.
yikes
Almost fucking choked on that one - kudos..

That was funny.

I've actually done this and it works even better than the old grease trick. Definitely worth the piece of bread 👌

Very clever technique, my father taught me that twenty-some years ago. Nice and helpful video, very rare on youtube.
Old techniques are the best very good demonstration
Might work be a cheap try.
Never saw it done with bread before, cool. The cavity also looks very clean after the bread was out
I tried the same thing with grease and couldn't get it. Watched this video and switched to bread. Worked just like the video! Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it!
Pack with bread, then bake at 350°F for twenty minutes. The bearing will slip right out and your work space will smell wonderful!
Kat Deville lmmfao!! Thats a good one
But the clutch will be toast.
Yep. Works a treat. Just did it to a 1995 G16B Vitara. Didn't even need a whole slice of fresh bread. Thanks very much.
Worked for me, easily got the bearing out. No sweat, thanks a lot.
Tried it on my sons scooter, was going to buy a set of blind bearing pullers ££££££ but the bread worked great : ) nice vid.

What kind of bread works best? The bread my girlfriend makes can be used as sandpaper.
Use dempsters lmao I cant help but laugh
so when you do a clutch job. just cut the crust off the kids lunch sandwich. Or your own. Thats recycling.
the more chemicals that make it soft the better

Used to use wheel bearing grease , works good . Never tried with MP grease
Sitting here eating bread while watching this vid 😂
this actually works, I used a cut off 1/2" drive extension and bread to remove the pilot bearing on my SBC. Alot cleaner than the grease method

great to have some old school skills for our young generation, great job
been wrenchin on engines for 30 years and had never seen this...now I bring an extra sandwich in my lunchbox just in case.
Doesnt work
Brilliant tried my own home made puller waste of time bread and a bolt 15 min had it out thanks for the info keep it coming. Used 1 wholemeal crust
Plasticine or play-dough does the job if there is no bread. Don't let the kids see you do this or every hole will be rammed!
Who has those items but doesn't have bread tho?
" ... or every hole will be rammed!"
My kids did so ...
... but they didn't fill them with bread
Why do I feel that you learnt that "not letting your kids see" part the hard way?
I used this method to remove GM OEM LS3 Pilot Bearing for my swap! I was very surprised! Took about 3 slices incase anyone is wondering.
Is there a chart showing how many slices would be needed for a 3.4L Toyota 5VZ-FE? ;o)
Ls engines have a hollow crank lucky you didn't press the bung and what ever your using into sump
I tried this but just ended up with a flock of pigeons tormenting me while I worked.
😂😂

Damp paper towel or napkin works too

Can the bread still be eaten when you are done?
Yes.
J Smith lol
Yes, best served with differential oil dip.
J Smith why bread use grease
J Smith can the boiled cassava still be eaten whe you are done
Bar soap works well too. Plus it leaves the motor smelling fresh and clean!!!!
That was awesome ! Which works best ? White or whole wheat ? lol
Doesn't really matter as long as it is moist. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Whole, because it goes into the hole easier!
I think white bread works best. It's a bit softer then wheat bread.
or a flour tortilla
Wheat bread so your engine can lose some weight
Damn I've been doing it wrong for more than 25 years!!! That's wayyyy less messy than grease!!! Thanks for sharing! 👍😎

What is the purpose of brea?
Diplacing the bearing by exercising reverse presure in out???
Pretty much. Bread, grease , paper towels all same concept gets behind it and as you pack it in the center it pushes the bearing out.
My uncle showed me this today, it worked great!
Now i know why my mechanic friend always have a loaf of bread on his tool box.

but soap has such a bad taste ;)

You can use wet cloth piece with same procedure.
This video just changed my life !
creativity on its best..people say im stupid when i stuff all the bread in the cavity..now they know how
Yes, to my amazement, it actually worked on my 88 BMW. I used a hamburger roll and an aluminum drive pin I made on my lathe.
That's a pretty cool trick...could be used for a few other bearing or bushings removals
Must be Wonder bread! Cool tech tip; I've never seen this done before.
Great idea. I think I will never have to use it but I like to know ways like this.

The wax of a candle too... cheers from México city
So cool! I’d lole to read the scientific reasoning as to why this works!
It can be summed up in one word: Hydraulics. For further details, feed that word to Google.
Heavy grease works as well used it for years.
