I wanted to add that some people found it weird when even strangers asked this :)
And here’s the recipe for the Kimchi fried rice I was making ( very simple)
    1. Fry some garlic and spring onions in olive oil
    2. Add onions and kimchi and some sugar, pepper (maybe a little bit of chicken stock if you have)
    3. put in the rice ( add a tiny bit of water if it looks too dry)
    4. sprinkle some cheese on top and a fried egg also!

Great video! Many Asians do this and my friends and classmates who were not Asian or have been 2/3/4th generation Asian found it weird that I used to say Hi and then followed by "have you eaten?" and if they say no I'd often follow up with a simple snack like a cracker that was in my backpack. My family told me that Asia had a lot of internal war which left a lot of people hungry. That was also why my family (and many Asian families) often over cook and have left overs because it was a sign that there was no shortage of food and that you won't grow hungry (and unhealthy). I really throughly enjoyed this video and learning why Koreans do this. It's interesting to see varying reasons for such a simply greeting. Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for this video Danny. I’m a second generation Korean Canadian and my family would always ask me this question. Growing up I would be annoyed they would constantly ask me if I ate rather than “how are you” as you would in more western cultures. But the background of this custom really humbled me and helped me realize how privileged I was growing up in a society where I never had to worry about being hungry. Now I want to ask my parents if they’ve eaten, hopefully they feel some care. I just feel sorry that I didn’t ask them sooner.

As soon as I discovered what was behind that "Have you eaten?", I was totally in love with your greeting. Food in our culture is quite important too. Gathering with friends and family around a table full of delicious food and crazy conversations is our day-to-day life. Not to mention that a good business deal is settled with nice meal and good wine.

It's same in India as well, whenever someone visit our home or we meet someone we always ask about it. Did you eat?? In India it's always asking someone in a same way, because of these same things. History i can't say but yes it's like a gesture to ask someone if they ate. My mom always asks anyone she talks on phone or any of my family. It is kind of taking care of them by knowing they are healthy. ❤️ that's why I love Korea, we share almost same culture 😍

  • @jessisikdar9979
    @jessisikdar9979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hi Danny,
I was actually surprised that asking someone have you eaten was so similar to our Indian culture, back in the time rural India was considerably poor and we also ask have you eaten was something equivalent to are you well or how are you. It is a gesture to show that you cared. To be honest I follow this as well as I have seen my family following it, whenever I speak to my family or friends I ask have you eaten, if people comes to our house we offer them to have a meal... It really feels warm when you show this gesture. Thanks for the post, really felt nice that there are other culture as well who feels the same way😊

This also exists in the Chinese culture as well. We ask if you have eaten as a way to show our concern about the person's well being.
When I was young, I always wondered why my parents never explicitly stated that they loved me. As I grew older, I came to learn my parents showed their love and concern through asking about my well-being, including inquiring if I have eaten yet.

Thank you for sharing these meanings and thoughts behind them. You just made me smile as I totally relate.
I grew up with a heavily food based Italian family and it's no wonder I love Korean culture so much. At breakfast we discuss what to have for lunch, at lunch we discuss dinner and at dinner we discuss the meals for tomorrow. It's always part of the conversation. This thought that being fed well is the number one show of love and health is so centered in our daily lives and well being as a culture.

I just love learning about different cultures. It is so interesting. When I first discovered Bruce Lee back in the day and have read his books, I love his idea that we should all learn each other's culture and respect them. I truly believe we are all humans and should love and respect each other at we are all the same no matter how we look, speak, how we worship or how we dress. We are the same and should be respectful of all people.

What a lovely way to greet someone. Thank you for sharing the history of this expression. It must be a universal way of people to greet and meet. Here in Central Texas we often offer a drink or snacks when someone drops by to visit or suggest stopping for coffee when unexpectedly meeting them away from home. Mom always made enough food for meals for extra people at the table. I can still hear her saying "stay for supper there is plenty". Thank you for causing those memories to pop up. ❤

I do this as well. It just snuck up on me once I started having kids. Of course I cant tell you the exact day it started but gradually bit by bit, it became a habit. It's mostly the moms in my southern culture. Southern soul food is big down here in the south (I'm in North Carolina) . I swear that it is so bad that if I visiting someone in the hospital and their jaw was wired shut, the first words out of my mouth would be "Are you hungry? Have you eaten yet?" It also doesn't help that I actually like feeding people. There is a satisfying feeling to see people enjoy the food I make.

I looooove this manner around eating and asking about eating or giving advice to eat well to everybody. I enjoy this from my K teacher and meanwhile I am asking him the same or as "older woman" I give him advice to eat well and not skip. He likes my true worries. In Europe its also the same but only if you want to invite somebody for meal. Never as a polite expression.

Really love this series - it's 2pm here in the UK and this popped up in my notifications and reminded me to take some time away from my desk, have something to eat and take a few minutes to myself. I was so intrigued to see the meaning behind this - its similar to my Irish family's obsession with eating/food which stemmed from the Great Famine, where eating well was hard but being able to eat meant you were surviving. Your bed talks are always so soothing to listen to. I would guess that the American equivalent, "How are you?" has become something we just say without thinking. It's also become a bit of a joke, because we have become a society that asks the question without really caring about the answer, so the answer is usually some form of, "I'm fine" or "I'm good." Is there a proper/common/polite/expected response to being asked if one has eaten? Does one answer literally, "I ate lunch," or figuratively, "I'm eating well these days"? Just wondering what the similarities and differences may be. Thank you again for sharing these little glimpses with us. I really enjoy watching and listening.

    Hi Dan,
Yes I thought it was weird to ask people if they have eaten yet, because in my culture if first meeting with someone they ask "have you eaten yet " it would imply they haven't and they are in a hurry to do so, I love learning cultural differences throught the world it is so interesting to me and confusing at times, Thank you for teaching us this stuff.😊

This world is so big, but so small at same time. In Spain, more specifically in North Spain, our family and friends time revolves around food too, and the first thing you would listen after arriving at someone's house is "eat this, or that, or should I cook something else for you". I think we are also are influenced by the civil War and its effects.
Thanks for explain this, it's really comforting that there are some feelings that are shared around the world.
By the way, your voice is so soothing and calm that gives peace to the ones listening you.
    Good night and good job

Indeed it sounds caring and worming! I learned for this greeting with deep meaning from the K-dramas. Usually it is our grandparents and parents who always care about us in such a manner. It's a normal thing in Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey. Even if you are a sudden guest in my country (Bulgaria) you will always be offered food and a drink, it's a part of our hospitality. It was more prominent in the past, than nowdays, but still.

Loved this! I think asking to eat is common in many cultures. While growing up in India I noticed this was a usual trend. We also asked everyone if they had eaten. Even if someone came to our home unannounced, they were always offered food. I miss this tradition in the US…
On a second note, I found vegetarian Kimchi so improvised this recipe a little bit. Kimchi fried rice a staple dish in my home now.

I think it such a great way to ask people how they are and care for them. When I meet my relatives, they first thing they notice is if I have gained any weight and they ask me about that which can be a little upsetting. If they had asked me if I have eaten yet, I would cry cause no one has ever asked me that and I would appreciate the care and thought behind those words. Thank you for sharing with us about this culture in Korea! I think it's great and it would make so much difference if the world practiced it :) I will also try to implement this in my life and hopefully, make a positive change in my community and the people around me!

We do the same thing here in the south of the US. But we ask, "You hungry? Want me to put something on?" It would be a natural transition for me to ask people if they've eaten... and even sit and have a chat and a snack. I'm always snacking! Great excuse to meet folks and try such AMAZING food! *making Korean BBQ for dinner tonight actually*

When I first started learning Mandarin last year, one of the first phrases I learned to say was "have you eaten"! I had to stop Mandarin for a bit to learn Korean this year, so now I'm going to have to start learning it all over again in Korean! Thank you for the World History of Korea lesson Dan, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It makes so much sense. Keep making these, as it brings comfort to many and is very informative as well. You've found your calling.

Thank you for this video. It was very informative. A Korean friend asked me if I had eaten and it was midnight here on the east coast of the US. And I said “yes of course I have, it’s almost midnight. I ate dinner around 6pm lol. Why do you ask?” And he said it was just a question. And I was confused but now I understand it’s a greeting.

Hi Dan. Thanks for clearing that up, it all makes sense now. I liked watching you cook, I didn’t realise that the item in the saucepan was chicken! Have you thought about investing in an Air fryer,! Much healthier for you. Also what was the tinned meat ( pork) and what was the dipping sauce.? Thanks Dan. Fun as always coral.

I'm so glad you clarified that because I seriously thought it was something only in KDramas...mind you, one of my best friends is from Korea and I've never thought to ask her the validity of this common phrase in KSeries. I guess I should've picked up on it since she always wants to cook banchan together. This is similar to my Hawaiian culture where we always start cooking as soon as family and/or friends come over.

  • @Maraaha55

    Just lovely.
Of course, as a KDrama addict, I've noticed "Have you eaten?". To be honest, I think I instinctively knew its roots. You don't need to look far into Korean history to know that even in the relatively recent past there was incredible suffering, some caused by wars, but also caused by the financial crisis when money lost its value and communities banded together for communal kitchens to feed everyone. Also, many cultural food practices are rooted in survival, such as the development of cold buckwheat noodle diners where North Korean refugees settled, and had no other way to survive, even physically. I too find the place in Korean culture occupied by "Have you eaten?" very warm.
Every culture is deeply influenced by food, and very often, that food is most interesting and creative when it is food for poor people. So, yes, I know you love street food, and that is always poor folk food. It's always interesting to me when I come across food in dramas and literature too. At the moment I am rereading Terry Pratchett, who writes about a fantasy universe known as Discworld, and food is much inspired by real down and dirty "working-man's" food. Working people used to say of the pig, "eat everything but the oink". In the UK we no longer eat ALL the cuts of meat, and many can't be found even in an "old-fashioned" butcher shop, which is, I think, a great shame.
I have never eaten Chicken feet, but I would try if I found them (cooked by someone who knows what they are doing!)

Growing up as a Hispanic every time we go visit or even get home from school my Tia or whoever was at home would ask us if we are hungry or have you eaten anything...so I never really thought about it and I saw it as a habit or routine.
