GARLIC SPINACH RED LENTIL CURRY(EASY & DELICIOUS) | Dal Palak Recipe | पालक दाल

  • Dal palak or spinach dal is a traditional Indian dish made with spinach, lentils, spices and herbs. There is nothing more comforting than a bowl of hot palak dal. Though I used a pressure cooker to cook my dal, you can even cook your dal in a pot but in that case more water will be required.

    Ingredients required for making dal palak -
    * 3/4th cup red lentils (masoor dal). You can even use yellow lentils (toor Dal)
    * 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder used while cooking the dal
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt used while cooking the dal. Add more later if required.
    * 1 medium/ 5.3 oz/ 150 gm onion
    * 1 medium to large/ 5.3 oz/ 150 gm tomato
    * 4 large cloves of garlic (3 roughly chopped and 1 finely sliced required for adding at the end)
    * 283 gm/ 10 oz baby spinach. You can even use large spinach leaves and chop them roughly. Didcard the stalks If using larger leaves .
    * 1/2 teaspoon kashmiri red chilli powder or paprika or 1/4th teaspoon cayenne pepper. Adjust the proportion according to your preference. Add less to start with. You can always add later after doing a taste test at the end of cooking.
    * 1 teaspoon ground coriander (dhania powder)
    * 1 fresh red/green chilli (optional)
    * Salt to taste. I used about 1 teaspoon of salt in total
    * 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
    * Coriander leaves. I even chopped their stem and added them.
    * 2 tablespoon oil
    * 4 cups of hot water. Add more to adjust consistency according to your preference.
    For tempering the dal (tarka) -
    * 1 teaspoon oil
    * 1 tablespoon butter. Can use only oil or vegan butter or ghee
    * garlic
    * 1 dry red chilli chopped (optional)
    * 1/4th teaspoon hing (asafoetida) - totally optional
    * 1/2 teaspoon kashmiri red chilli powder/paprika
    * coriander leaves chopped
    ** Dal thickens more as It cools down
    Serve this with hot steamed rice or roti.

    Even your rice looks perfect! Thank you for this delectable recipe. I’ve always wished for smell’oh-vision while watching your videos. I’m sure they’re on the brink of discovering it. But once they come out with that, I’ll need taste’oh-vision. I really wish that you owned a restaurant… down the street from me. I’d be there three times a week.     I didn't start making good dal & bean recipes until I started using a pressure cooker. I think you're right that making dal & bean recipes is so much easier with a pressure cooker.

    I had dal saag at whole foods market for the first time on their hot food bar and i have been craving it every day since.
    All these spices and ingredients are so satisfying in my tummy and my brain too!
    Although I still feel I need some protein from meat sources on occasion, but if i were to be vegetarian or vegan, i do believe i could live on indian cooking fairly easily.
    Ive been having a lot of upset tummy lately, but that dal was actually comforting and nourishing because I couldn’t hardly eat anything that didn’t hurt my stomach and I wasn’t feeling very hungry either. I think i had a flu and now is passing, but i still want to keep this food as a diet staple.
    Im glad i found your recipe for dal here so i can make it for less cost than going out to eat and also adjust the ingredients to not have any preservatives or chemical additives that was in the one in whole foods.
    Their dal had moong dal so i bought some on Amazon, can i use the mung bean in place of lentils? Also
    Can we freeze this recipe??

    OMG Bumbi, since discovering your channel a week ago I’ve suddenly started making amazing Indian food with no experience before! This dish was just luscious, gentle warm sunny spices and the spinach is juicy but not watery, and not overcooked. The garlic butter/ Kashmiri chili/ cilantro at the end just makes you want to gobble up a huge bowl. Thanks so much!! I also made your chickpeas and potatoes recipe with canned chickpeas and it was even better than the dish I love in Indian restaurants.

    Hi Bumbi, I have made several recipes of Dal as I just love the texture and taste of it - but I can honestly say - hand on heart - I have never tasted one like this. It was worth all the effort - simply delicious scrumptious. It was in a three step stage, but the result was phenomenon. I have enough for three dinners, one I will share with my daughter, whom I converted to lentils using Dal recipes, as she - like me loves curry and won't have supermarket bought or takeaways now. I didn't have any butter to hand so the only change I made was using ghee instead. Thank you once again for making this channel. Its superb.

    Thank you for your amazing recipe for dal, which really impressed me and made me fall in love with dal curry. Butter is an eye-opener. It gives the dal so much flavor with garlic. I will repeat cooking this curry as my staple dish. You have inspired me a lot. After having traditional Japanese dishes for the new year for about 3 days, I rushed to cook Indian curry because it's so good. Maybe next year, I will be having Indian curry as my fusion new year dish. Thank you again.

    Can't wait to try this. May I ask, how many whistles for stovetop pressure cooker?

      Unfortunately I never go by the whistle method but always rely on time. I always allow cooker to come to full pressure first on high heat and then reduce heat to low and start my timer depending on the type of meat. For chicken, 15 minutes should be fine.

    Sooooooo HOW LONG DO WE COOK WITHOUT(!) a pressure cooker?????, you stated we can cook in a pot yet failed to state HOW LONG TO COOK IN A REGULAR POT,,,, I personally believe tgat the OLD SCHOOL WAY OF COOKING MAKES A DIFFERENCE N IS BEST,,,, when hurrying cooking(?!) it takes away ,,,,,,

      I usually cook red lentils for 20-25 minutes in a regular pot with the lid on.
