The 7-11's were literally one of my favorite parts of visiting Japan! The huge variety of really good food items for CHEAP was amazing and we went multiple times a day! Family Mart is also the same way as well. Those egg sandwiches were a big hilight for me, SO good.
Tbh supermarket stuff in Japan especially fresh fruits and vegetables to make those food is bit expensive than eating from 711, a meal that makes you full cost 300Yen for a bowl of noodles or dish there. Which is impossible to make a dish there from scratch with same amount of money per meal, and also convenience
My favorite is going to the markets at the basement of the malls and shopping centers towards the end of the night. They start marking down all their precut meat, prepared sushi and sashimi around 630-7pm. Starts at 10% off and slowly gets up to 70% depending on how late it is and how much is left. Sometimes can have $70 worth of sushi for $15-$20.
I knew instantly that you will love the egg sandwich. When I was in Japan it was part of my daily breakfast (instead of having breakfast in the Hotel we went to a Convenience Store and got our breakfast there). And the egg sandwich was one of the best things I ate in Japan, it was simply amazing.

Same here! I spent a few months in Tokyo some time ago and while working many, many hours, I always had the 7-11 egg salad sandwich as the backup when coming back late. Can't explain how good it is.
7-Eleven Egg Sandwiches is one of the best thing I ever had in my life. Not only delicious, but also a best friend when you dont have time to eat outside and you need to eat fast while working or having lots of activities. I once have bought 6 Egg Salad sandwiches and my friend ask why you bought that much and I said "You will realized it when you eat this" and he ate one from mine and soon he get addicted to it, eating 3 of them at once. A simple convenience food yet recommended by everyone is the best word to say.

"Beikoku" is a somewhat rare, and often derogative way of refuring to the US. But the words, and the Kanji's translate to "Great Kingdom of Rice." and "rice" is basically just a reference to all food,. So America is the Great Kingdom of Rice./ food. Which...makes sense.

For the pudding. Usually the pudding cup have a stick-out nub at the bottom of the cup. What you want to do is flip the pudding cup, place it on a plate and break the nub. It will release the pudding onto the plate without breaking the pudding
As someone who went to Japan recently and ate at convenience stores like 7-11, Lawson, and Family Mart literally every day, I can confirm that the food they have is delicious!! 😋 Absolutely worth the price! The onigiri is so good too 🍙 and their breakfast foods

My thought is, the convenience store food is more stable in quality and much much cheaper. Btw, the custard pudding is steamed and the caramel sauce is intentionally made quite bitter to balance the sweetness. Looking forward to more videos from your time here.
I really hope you took some time to explore ramen on your trip. Japanese treat their ramen like we do our barbeque. Every region has their own style, and I never found one style I couldn't enjoy.
Watching Guga trying foods in Japan and seeing the drastic difference between the episodes here and videos from two months ago - he looks even healthier and younger ✨ My only pet peeve is when Creators say ingredients outside their Culture look like 💩 that's lame.
So, Japanese resident here, the thing to remember about Japan is palates and ingredients are much different than what you may be used to. I have heard stories about how some POWs were served some of the more traditional Japanese foods when they were caught during WWII and went home complaining about the war crimes Japan committed in serving said food. Basically though, the answer is if you don't know what it is, don't buy it if you don't feel adventurous. There are a lot of foods that use seafood you would never see in America, many organ meats, and of course a fair selection of insect based proteins. As an example, the prefecture next to mine is known for 蜂の子 (hachinoko) which is essentially bee larva over rice. The point being, there are likely to be some very exclusive ingredients used in some of those fancier bento that we just don't have a taste for. Especially if you don't know what it is. For all you know you could be eating Geoduck and whale (legit Japanese foods), which are generally more premium and expensive. That said there are plenty of premium products that fit the typical western palate, so when in doubt at the fancy place get wagyu and black pork katsu.

The 7-11, or other Japanese convenience store egg salad sandwich are pretty much the stuff of legends. Simple, cheap, delicious and easy to obtain. I probably ate a couple of hundred of them during my time in Japan.
When I lived in Japan, I went to the 7-11 around the corner from my apartment, and guaranteed, I got the egg sandwich every single time. Those are just the best.
The convenience stores in japan are true convenience, reasonably priced drinks and food. Good taste for the price you are paying. (I truly love the grilled salmon onigiri from the big 3, being Lawson, Family Mart, and 7-11)
Guga bein' real here. So many TH-camrs try to play up their experiences in Japan, but I feel like he was very honest about the (mostly) bad expensive snacks.
Sometimes asking the clerks will help you out with the context of the dish you bought, because there's a lot of unique things people in Japan consider as a gift and if you don't know what it is of course you're gonna say it's bad
Those ones he got in the beginning are meant to be gifts and not good ones at that strangely. I also looked like the department store in shibuya station that caters to visitors
i could be wrong but the pudding is supposed to be flipped onto a plate. pretty sure theres a part on the bottom that you tear off so that the pudding comes out. i think the most expensive bento i ever got from a department store was tonkatsu bento which was 1600 yen. usually i buy onigiris/rice balls whenever i go to a convenience store in japan

We went to Mitsukoshi a month ago, we got a few of the cakes/dessert which were really good and not expensive. I didn't like the look of those box things you got so I'm glad I didn't get them. On a completely different note, how much was your hotel to get that big of a room! Must have cost almost as much as your flight :)
The popularity of the egg mayonnaise sandwich in Japan is one of those rare examples of a food introduced from the UK. It's very popular here as well, especially if made with Heinz salad cream instead of mayo. A staple of the supermarket "meal deal" sandwich, snack, drink combo.

7-11 sushi and sandwiches for the win always, even the tiny towns in Japan have a 7-11. When traveling/touring Japan they're an affordable and good place to eat if you can't find any open restaurants or street food vendors to buy from. But on of the best places to eat is at the markets in the countryside - similar to USA farmer's markets - with so much great fresh food.

Hi Guga! Great video, I lived over there for 2 years, loved the food. The mayo used in that egg salad was more than likely Kewpie mayo, widely considered the best mayo anywhere. One of my favorite things was a rice ball, with salmon, seaweed and pickled plum. Oh, and their fried chicken is a treat. Take care!
Fun place for food from all that I've seen. That food from the 7-11 looked so well priced for the quality. I'm kind of disappointed the prices were not shown for the expensive store. Doing a video on the quality of the vending machines fare would be a neat idea.
Guga, you're supposed to flip the pudding onto a plate, there is a flap at the bottom that helps the pudding slide right off the container If you eat it straight like that then all the caramel goodness will only be at the bottommm😁
Convenience store stuff can be quite good there and lots of times they come up with things you cannot buy anywhere else. I enjoyed these “Japanese series”, would be awesome to see more😉 After having lived there for over a decade, now everything feels nostalgic😅 Keep it up Guga!
Guga, I currently live in Japan and if you ever travel back and eat at a 7-11 you need to try more of the meals they have there. Especially the beef bowls and the fried food they have behind the counter. They are perfect delicious snack when you’re short on time. Also try out the Lawsons and Family Marts food.
Moral of the story: Do not buy fancy food gift boxes from high end department stores. Convenience store food is awesome, I'm actually surprised Guga didn't try the famous fried chicken at 7-Eleven. Also the candy cheese is probably something to snack on in between beers or chu-hi drinks like Strong Zero. Bet Guga will go wild over the ekiben (train station lunchboxes) that are sold at the major railway stations.
Its always fun seeing people react to the expensive fruit in japan because they dont realize that the purpose of them is gifts for businessmen. Its quality fruit but its expensive for expensive sake.
The thing about the expensive convenience store is that in the case of those bentos, eating it is not the main purpose, its the presentation, because those are design as a "Omiyage" or present that you give to friends after a trip or to your newcomer neighbour. Omiyage tends to be colorful and asthetically pleasing, the flavour is secondary.
no i dont think your being harsh if something is more expensive you expect it to be better quality and it should be held to a higher standard. the fact that a cheep 7-Eleven had better food shows that the expensive place was charging for looks and not for flavor and it shows how little they care for their customers. if it was a popup shop you would likely have paid for their ticket to leave town. but its a convenience store.
Went to japan for the first time a couple months ago, 7-11 never disappointed. I miss the snacks already. Also the whole trip was surprisingly affordable. Very highly recommend.
I am a foodie and picky on food and it was a big surprise and I was able to not just survive but also enjoy the food from Japanese convenience stores for one week ski trip. They even have a lot of great stuff in freezer. I love more food from Lawson versus 7-11. Family mart was also ok for some ranges of food.
Guda's wife is the Ying to his Yang , a good balance to keep him on track. Nice . Have seen top foodies and chefs hit the convivence stores in Japan and not one complained about the food quality.

Japanese convenience stores are known for their high quality poducts. 7/11, Lawson and Family Mart are the big 3. There used to be the sushi place I go to with a chef would make rainbow rolls and the lemon wedges would still have a bit of the skin on them. The chef cut his lemon wedges paper thin though so it was very easy to bite through. The skin of the lemon contained a lot of the lemon oil and really enhanced the flavor. That lemon wedge didn't look very thin though so it probably would have been annoying to chew.
That sweet flavor is definitly from the avocado. My grandma had an avocado tree growing up and the avocado grew natrually. They were very sweet and watery almost that we had to spinkle some salt when we would eat them in slices. Home grown avocados taste radicaly diffrent from store bought. And those egg sandwhices were a GODSEND when I lived in Seoul. I ate those every morning on my way to school with a banana milk.
Guga, I currently live in Japan and have been for nearly 10 years. Some of the delicacies here are a totally different palate flavor than back in the US. If you went on a 新幹線 (Bullet Train) you probably saw all the little shops to buy bento boxes. I hope you were able to try some. You will find deep fried pork cutlets (とんかつ）but you might be surprised to find out its cold, on a bed of rice with a salty sour plum in it. Don't be put off that its cold, sure its different but once you get used to the differences, things just hit the spot. I can't deny it though, the convenience stores here, (7-11, Lawson Family Mart, etc..) have some amazing food right off the shelves. The Egg Sandwich (たまご）you picked up is a classic, you can NEVER go wrong with it. However, I'm sure, if you tried enough, you would have noticed that a lot of the sandwiches look like the are PACKED with food, but it's usually not. The ramen you buy off the shelves are also super flavorful too. Hope you enjoyed some real good food over here while you were on vacation. Im hoping you had a good sushi meal too. If you ever come back out to Japan, let me know! I can help you around!

The 7-11, or other Japanese convenience store egg salad sandwich are pretty much the stuff of legends. Simple, cheap, delicious and easy to obtain. I probably ate a couple of hundred of them during my time in Japan.
When I lived in Japan, I went to the 7-11 around the corner from my apartment, and guaranteed, I got the egg sandwich every single time. Those are just the best.
I'm a 7-11 & Lawson's spaghetti fan. I eat at least a few times while I'm there. Add a loaf of Japanese white bread and bam!

The convenience stores in japan are true convenience, reasonably priced drinks and food. Good taste for the price you are paying. (I truly love the grilled salmon onigiri from the big 3, being Lawson, Family Mart, and 7-11)
And don't forget that they offer to heat up any food you want hot.

Guga bein' real here. So many TH-camrs try to play up their experiences in Japan, but I feel like he was very honest about the (mostly) bad expensive snacks.
Sometimes asking the clerks will help you out with the context of the dish you bought, because there's a lot of unique things people in Japan consider as a gift and if you don't know what it is of course you're gonna say it's bad
Those ones he got in the beginning are meant to be gifts and not good ones at that strangely. I also looked like the department store in shibuya station that caters to visitors
i could be wrong but the pudding is supposed to be flipped onto a plate. pretty sure theres a part on the bottom that you tear off so that the pudding comes out.
i think the most expensive bento i ever got from a department store was tonkatsu bento which was 1600 yen. usually i buy onigiris/rice balls whenever i go to a convenience store in japan
Guga out there being real and actually telling if something isn't good. Glad you liked most of it, though. I never tried melon kit kat, but the apple pie one is amazing.
We went to Mitsukoshi a month ago, we got a few of the cakes/dessert which were really good and not expensive. I didn't like the look of those box things you got so I'm glad I didn't get them. On a completely different note, how much was your hotel to get that big of a room! Must have cost almost as much as your flight :)

7-11 sushi and sandwiches for the win always, even the tiny towns in Japan have a 7-11. When traveling/touring Japan they're an affordable and good place to eat if you can't find any open restaurants or street food vendors to buy from. But on of the best places to eat is at the markets in the countryside - similar to USA farmer's markets - with so much great fresh food.

Hi Guga! Great video, I lived over there for 2 years, loved the food. The mayo used in that egg salad was more than likely Kewpie mayo, widely considered the best mayo anywhere. One of my favorite things was a rice ball, with salmon, seaweed and pickled plum. Oh, and their fried chicken is a treat. Take care!
Fun place for food from all that I've seen. That food from the 7-11 looked so well priced for the quality. I'm kind of disappointed the prices were not shown for the expensive store.

Convenience store stuff can be quite good there and lots of times they come up with things you cannot buy anywhere else.

Guga, I currently live in Japan and if you ever travel back and eat at a 7-11 you need to try more of the meals they have there. Especially the beef bowls and the fried food they have behind the counter. They are perfect delicious snack when you’re short on time. Also try out the Lawsons and Family Marts food.

Moral of the story: Do not buy fancy food gift boxes from high end department stores. Convenience store food is awesome, I'm actually surprised Guga didn't try the famous fried chicken at 7-Eleven. Also the candy cheese is probably something to snack on in between beers or chu-hi drinks like Strong Zero. Bet Guga will go wild over the ekiben (train station lunchboxes) that are sold at the major railway stations.

I was stationed in Japan and let me tell you, 7-eleven, Family Mart etc were life savers. They have a lemon cheese icecream thats out of this world.

Its always fun seeing people react to the expensive fruit in japan because they dont realize that the purpose of them is gifts for businessmen. Its quality fruit but its expensive for expensive sake.
The thing about the expensive convenience store is that in the case of those bentos, eating it is not the main purpose, its the presentation, because those are design as a "Omiyage" or present that you give to friends after a trip or to your newcomer neighbour. Omiyage tends to be colorful and asthetically pleasing, the flavour is secondary.

and it shows how little they care for their customers. if it was a popup shop you would likely have paid for their ticket to leave town. but its a convenience store.

Went to japan for the first time a couple months ago, 7-11 never disappointed. I miss the snacks already. Also the whole trip was surprisingly affordable. Very highly recommend.

I am a foodie and picky on food and it was a big surprise and I was able to not just survive but also enjoy the food from Japanese convenience stores for one week ski trip. They even have a lot of great stuff in freezer. I love more food from Lawson versus 7-11. Family mart was also ok for some ranges of food.

I guess you were unlucky with the CANAPE boxes. Try some others next time you come over here. Japanese convenience stores are known for their high quality poducts. 7/11, Lawson and Family Mart are the big 3. The good thing about them is that they constantly release new products and most of them are YUMMY. 😊😊
There used to be the sushi place I go to with a chef would make rainbow rolls and the lemon wedges would still have a bit of the skin on them. The chef cut his lemon wedges paper thin though so it was very easy to bite through. The skin of the lemon contained a lot of the lemon oil and really enhanced the flavor.
That lemon wedge didn't look very thin though so it probably would have been annoying to chew.
A nice holiday in Japan, and you can write off most of the cost as a business expense. Love it.

That sweet flavor is definitly from the avocado. My grandma had an avocado tree growing up and the avocado grew natrually. They were very sweet and watery almost that we had to spinkle some salt when we would eat them in slices. Home grown avocados taste radicaly diffrent from store bought. And those egg sandwhices were a GODSEND when I lived in Seoul. I ate those every morning on my way to school with a banana milk.
Guga, I currently live in Japan and have been for nearly 10 years. Some of the delicacies here are a totally different palate flavor than back in the US. If you went on a 新幹線 (Bullet Train) you probably saw all the little shops to buy bento boxes. I hope you were able to try some. You will find deep fried pork cutlets (とんかつ）but you might be surprised to find out its cold, on a bed of rice with a salty sour plum in it. Don't be put off that its cold, sure its different but once you get used to the differences, things just hit the spot.
I can't deny it though, the convenience stores here, (7-11, Lawson Family Mart, etc..) have some amazing food right off the shelves. The Egg Sandwich (たまご）you picked up is a classic, you can NEVER go wrong with it. However, I'm sure, if you tried enough, you would have noticed that a lot of the sandwiches look like the are PACKED with food, but it's usually not. The ramen you buy off the shelves are also super flavorful too.
Hope you enjoyed some real good food over here while you were on vacation. Im hoping you had a good sushi meal too. If you ever come back out to Japan, let me know! I can help you around!
