Eddie Olmos changed the tone really fast. He brought a cultural awareness and a gravitas with him. No wonder he got nominated for two Emmys and won one for this series. Such a brilliant actor across the board.
Castillo is my favorite character. He talk brief, show little emotion, but he handles the bureaucracy so his people could focus on their work, the kind of boss you want.
Quite honestly my favorite character on the show was Castillo. He had a coolness about him. Spoke softly and carried a huge stick. Made me big time fan of Edward James Olmos. At the same time that I praise Olmos, I have to acknowledge the passing of his predecessor on the show Gregory Sierra. He played the first boss over Crockett and Tubbs in the early episodes and was killed off the show in the first season. Recently Mr. Sierra, who is best known for his role as Julio Fuentes on Sanford and Son, lost his battle with stomach and liver cancer. RIP Gregory Sierra.
I loved the cop duo and still you're right - a man that talks too much looses in these situations all the time - I was raised on Rockford & streets of San Francisco- this was the same level.
I always saw him as a more matured version of Detective Sergeant Chano Amengual from Barney Miller. In my head canon, Det. Sgt. Anmengual had retired from NYPD to go head up the vice division down in Miami, because the winters were mild.

My dad had one of those manual typewriters, when we got an electric one around 1986 or so, I thought that thing was so cool, but then we got an IBM with a dot matrix comptuer 6 months later and that was the coolest thing. But my real adult life, at least my pro working adult life that was post 2000, when the 80s were retro. But still, I miss face to face interactions.

Just a real stoic man of few words, yet everything that was needed was said and done in just a few seconds. Now compare that to a character like Kylo Ren, such a joke. Put Ren and Castillo in a room and Castillo would Force Stare him into oblivion.
My favorite character by far. There was an ep where a drug kingpin gave Castillo info on a rival. When Castillo didn’t lavish thanks on him, the kingpin whined about how he was doing Castillo a solid and didn’t even say thanks. Castillo says “I’m just doing what you’re afraid to do. And one day I’ll bury you too.” Eastwood in his prime delivery of the line.
Miami Vice, Literally a series that was ahead of it's time. What an era. The nostalgia is real man. Been re-watching the entire series these past months, and what a time. Don't think any show can come close too it these days. Sad that the era, is long past. Iconic storyline, themes, instrumentals, characters and so much more. Legendary. What makes me appreciate the show even more is that they used some of Collin's music, truly iconic. What a scene, one of my favorite, and one I'll never forget. Castillo is massively underrated, and so happy that casted him to play, because he nailed that role.
Hit the nail on the head with how you described this show. It was amazing. And still hold up today, imo. Redefined a genre, and was a clear trend-setter. Man I miss shows like this.

Something he had a history of doing in other projects. Which is one of the reasons Olmos is so interesting to watch. Apparently, it unhinged PMT and Johnson a bit. Still, it made for some great dynamics in the show.
Edward Olmos refused to do the show unless he had complete creative control over his character. They kept offering more and more money and he kept turning it down because it didn’t come with creative control. Finally they relented. True story.
From what I understand, the tension between those two was real. It End it actually made the dynamic between their characters much better. And as the relationship between the two improve, the dynamic that they created in the beginning was what they chose to carry for the most part through the series.

This show was one of the few things my family and I had to look foward to. Every Friday we knew we at least had that. The 1980's were simultaneously a miserable time period and the most hopeful "we still have the future" reserve of energy that is not now and hasn't been for 32+ years. I still don't know how it was like that. It really was though. It was a time period that I despised every minute of. It is the same time period that for many years at this point in 2023 I would do anything to go back to and say that with as God as my witness with 100% honesty and truthfulness.
I remember being completely wrong about him. Yes he was all business, but would also back his squad up if they all came out of the wrong side of hell covered in blood. LOYALITY. HONOR. TRUST. That's what I remember most about Castillo.
I was already a devout fan of this show from jump as a kid. It was the only time my Dad would let me watch a show that wasn't completely for kids. He loved Miami Vice and I did and still do. I was 9-15 when this show aired. It defined my childhood when it came to how I wanted TV/Movies to be. When Edward James Olmos joined the show, it was like Yoda joining Star Wars. He gave it eternal life and a depth that sustained it. I LOVED this show then and still do now. Even with some of the dated/corny scenes, it still holds up.

Love it. The Lieutenant was an instant hit by being so entirely different from what we expect in a show like this. And watching this now, you can see how the reaction of the characters builds this mystique, by being in equal measure bewildered and attracted.

I grew up in the 1980s and remember this show well, and looking back MV was a pretty shallow show. Not as shallow as today's reality shows but it nevertheless was. However, I can also understand how it was such a hit back then. Coming off an era of The Rockford Files, Kojak and Hill Street Blues, it was unique, fresh, colorful and modern (and very timely considering what Miami was back then), and therefore couldn't be denied.
Oh,and thank you! The coolest scene in a film is that gentleman on a walking stick in the rain. The coolest scene in a TV show is that man with a samurai sword following the laws of bushido.

I was mostly high when I watched these back in the 1980's. So I don't remember a lot of details. I remember Castillo as a no-nonsense, smart, hard-nosed but compassionate boss. And then there was one episode where Castillo goes full ninja, Spider Man, Rambo. I mean, I think he chopped a guy with a sword in that episode. Memories are all foggy now. He was my favorite character. The 1980's were surrealistic... Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs Part II and Miami Vice... a winning combination.
I always love when some actors are greeting me with eye contact (that dude reg'in) 0:00 I loved Miami Vice back in the day as a kid, it was so good and well-made. when you're watching it as an adult, you are definitely taking notice of the low budget that clearly was in play and almost laughable at times in some scenes.

In that very moment Miami Vice became the best tv show of all time.
I grew up in the 1980s and remember this show well, and looking back MV was a pretty shallow show. Not as shallow as today's reality shows but it nevertheless was. However, I can also understand how it was such a hit back then. Coming off an era of The Rockford Files, Kojak and Hill Street Blues, it was unique, fresh, colorful and modern (and very timely considering what Miami was back then), and therefore couldn't be denied.
Could you imagine if it had continued with the first police chief? No thanks.

I was mostly high when I watched these back in the 1980's. So I don't remember a lot of details. I remember Castillo as a no-nonsense, smart, hard-nosed but compassionate boss. And then there was one episode where Castillo goes full ninja, Spider Man, Rambo. I mean, I think he chopped a guy with a sword in that episode. Memories are all foggy now. He was my favorite character. The 1980's were surrealistic... Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs Part II and Miami Vice... a winning combination.
His celebrity impersonator goes by Edward James Almost. That's frickin' hilarious!

The opening of Miami Vice every week was great when it was on every week. Kicked the weekend off (when you were home rather than out).
Whenever I see Lt. Castillo I always picture him saying, "What were you thinking son! Who's that laughing, is that Selena?!"

I loved Miami Vice back in the day as a kid, it was so good and well-made.
when you're watching it as an adult, you are definitely taking notice of the low budget that clearly was in play and almost laughable at times in some scenes.
Yeah it was low budget and imperfect...but that is what makes this show perfect in my eyes.
