Perhaps the best portrayal of the modern samurai whether in movies or television ... the character of Lieutenant Castillo took the show into another dimension... Awesome !!!
The look which Martin gives Sonny after Sonny's question......conveyed a deep trust, respect, and realization of honor between the two. It was priceless.
You idiot! I have to clean fruity pebbles off of my computer screen now thanks to your comment! Don't you have any understanding of what you've done?! This crap better come off the screen!
In the episode, it's implied/suggested that Gretzky deliberately missed Castillo because he had terminal cancer and wanted to go the "suicide by cop" route to protect his family.
Gretzski missed on purpose. He was committing suicide but he wanted castillo to be the one. In return he left him a fortune for taking care of the wife and kid.
Edward James olomos translation of Castillio's character perfectly frames the Vice unit and the elements of the show. He's the straight man , serious beyond measure and as a result provides a serious HEAT surrounding the show. SO many tv shows and movies would use Miami Vice as a guide to character and show developement. Miami vice had it all, great cast, great writers, great visuals, great music, just great all around. i can honestly say this show influenced my life. It tapped a string on everything i loved. And it made me make a home out of florida. and i never ever regretted living their, in fact the place readily made all my miami vice fantasies come true. From the setting of the place to the hot cars the hot women the style all of it.
It was definitely a great revival vehicle for Jan's career. His pervasive themes were certainly one of the major ingredients that made Vice stand out from all the other "just another cop" shows.
he is only dangerous to the villains, this is a man who has a firm grip of honour and what he feels he has to do to protect the society. This was my favourite caracter in Miami vice and it is very good acting.

In that suit, Castillo looks like a top MiB agent. I grew up watching this show, it first sites when I was 12 in 1984. Castillo was my dad's favorite character on the show. Mine as well. To this day my father will reminisce about MV, and any movie or TV show he watches where there's a Castillo-like character, my dad will go into the memories of this show.
This is easily in the top 5 Miami Vice episodes of all time and one of the many pieces of proof that Edward James Olmos is the coolest person ever to breathe air

Greatest of all Castillo-centered episodes! Nice that there is so much of “Castillo’s Theme” in it - I have Jan Hammer’s Miami Vice: The Complete Collection, and for some reason Hammer never cut the theme all-by-itself, although it makes a couple of appearances in pieces from other eps. For those of you wondering how Gretzky could “miss” at close range with an automatic weapon, I suggest you watch the rest of this ep. Well worth the time spent! One of the two greatest episodes of the entire show, the other being “Out Where the Buses Don’t Run” (which also contains some great, typically-laconic Castillo scenes, even though he’s not the focus in that one).
Castillo was awesome. The 2 women in the program were perfect for the roles they were chosen for. All of them were pure perfection in the roles! Castillo never smiled. He was a tortured soul!
best show! The cinematography and use of music on a tv production is second to none and as never been duplicated. Just bought the complete series on Blu-Ray.
Gretzky was dying of cancer; it had spread throughout his entire body and he knew he was living on borrowed time. When he unloaded the Mac-11 at Castillo, he wasn’t trying to shoot him at all. He simply wanted Castillo to fire the kill shot, center mass; a mercy killing Gretzky wanted Martin to do for him in order to put him out of his misery. The way two modern day samurai, two brothers-in-arms, would honor each other. In combat. To the end.
I would have LOVED to have gotten more back story on Captain Castillos character, also the two females officers, they were not given enough story lines.
Kim, you need to watch the episodes “Golden Triangle, Parts One and Two”. Part One was originally entitled “The Score”. These episodes fill in a lot of Castillo’s history, although we never get to know “everything”. Castillo has a great deal of mystery surrounding him, part of which is his age: He has to be a *lot* older than he looks, here! I’d love to take up the subject with Edward James Olmos, who is the only person who “really knows” Castillo 😎🙂.
Jack intentionally missed when he opened upon Castillo. It’s real Samurai stuff. It forced Castillo to shoot to kill. Likely what Jack saw as a more honourable way out.
