Last year I was literally dying. I had lost roughly 40 lbs unexplained and people in my little circle told me how great I looked! My circle became smaller. I appreciate this conversation so much!

Thank you for discussing people talking about other people's bodies. We need to do better as a society. I have a friend on my SAR team who lost weight due to a painful stomach issue and I cringed when the president of our team commented on the change in his appearance.

Thank you for your chat on compliments. I have been told I looked great while struggling with an eating disorder. My friend’s husband left her for another woman, she couldn’t eat, and was told she looked better than ever. Well intended people can still do harm.
On a lighter note, don’t drink fuzzy water in my house. Probably means my cat has dipped her paw in it. 😸

I love your pants ideas SO MUCH! Bring on the hot coral/sulphurus yellow/sawtooth star print quilted barrel legs! I'm also loving a barrel leg trouser these days. They are so comfy. I wish I loved sewing, I can see but I don't want to. Perhaps some quilted barrel leg pants can convince me to sew again :)

You are hella good at tackling sticky topics with kindness, empathy, and serious realism. I am editing this to add that there is almost nothing better than wearing weird pants in an elementary school. I wear my run and fly dungarees to work and I am literally the talk of the school in the way that 5-11 year olds admire something.

Oh my goodness, please say it louder for the ones in the back! You approached the conversation of bodies and change so *chefs kiss* and I am so grateful to have listened to it ❤
I went through a massive body change (smaller) and the number of compliments I received confused me so badly. My body hurt, I was exhausted, lost all my hair and could barely walk 10ft without nearly passing out and people went out of their way to tell me how gorgeous I looked slim. My turning point was an old friend basically ran up to me in the store mid me having a panic attack looking for a place to sit down so I didnt pass out, just to tell me I looked like the bride he always imagined I could be. My body has since changed (bigger) and my hair has grown back, I can run a mile up hill and I feel amazing... Shocker the compliments have completely stopped.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind, thoughtful approach to the subject that is changing bodies. ((Hugs))

Thank you for sharing that about compliments. I have been loosing weight due to being ill for a long time - at the point now that I have lost so much weight I can’t wear my wedding rings anymore as they fall off - and people keep complimenting me on how great I look. Inwardly I am crying. I would love to loose weight normally (I’m a comfy sized gal) but this is not a good feeling to be loosing it by being sick for so long and the doctors being stumped as to what to do to help me. I refuse to buy smaller sizes in clothes too so now I am just swimming in the clothes that used to fit fine. Sigh

Great conversation about compliments. As a young teen in the 80's We were expected to be super skinny. It created a generation of people with eating disorders including me. I got compliments on how slim I was but then they started to be "you are too thin" "You have lost a lot of weight" etc which just made me not eat even more. Fast forward to my menopause and after I had a total hysterectomy I put on weight and became curvy. Yes I also got comments that I had put on weight. I was trying desperately to like my curves that I had never had and this didn't help. My body is now losing weight again post 2 years, so lets see where that goes.

Thanks so much for just being your amazing self. I watched the section at the beginning about commenting on someone's size. I was brought up in the same generation as you. I still feel icky when people talk about my weight. My mother in law does it all of the time. To me and my kids. I love her so much and have really tried to have that conversation but she just doesn't understand. I may need to send her a link to this. She is trying to give a compliment, I know, but it feels really odd. Thanks for talking about it. 😊

One thing that I heard that I really loved. The 5 second rule when commenting about someone. If it is something that can't be changed in 5 seconds, don't say it. Such as body type. If it is something that they can change in 5 seconds, such as food on teeth, skirt stuck in underwear go ahead and say it, but don't point it out to embarrass the person.

Ok, in case you would like some encouragement in your journey toward the quilted pants, I was in London with my daughter last month while she was studying abroad there, and we visited lots of trendy thrift stores and MULTIPLE ones had these quilted jumpsuits. Like they were created out of old quilts and were gorgeous. Granted they were between 350 - 700 British pounds each so we didn't get any but I too was thinking a pair of quilted pants would be amazing. If you make some I am certainly going to attempt a pair and we can virtually high five each other!

Eastborne Trousers by Scroop Patterns…I have them in wool plaid, denim with an embroidered floral hem, and linen. I also have a pair of pants I made from a kafta quilt…they are reversible WIDE legged based off a pattern from the late 60’s early ‘70’s. I’m empty nesting…that’s all I can figure cuz…oh let us not forget the wide legged navy blue quilt (fabric inherited from my Nana’s stash) that I plan on applying an appliqué garden. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your podcasts so much. I love that you’re not afraid to speak your mind, you make me laugh, and it truly feels like I’m just relaxing and listening to a friend, and, I love that you’re worried because you think your old house might be leaking because I think that mine is too. Your vest is wonderful and I can’t seem to find anything like that at any of the thrift stores I go to. I live in Indianapolis, too, and I mainly go to the Goodwills in my area and Thrifty Threads but, if you know some other ones to check out, I’ve loved to know. Good luck with your book club! I joined the long-ago book club at Barnes and Noble to meet new people and to read books I’m not generally drawn to (mostly relatively current books), which is good, but I am a vintage, classics, and cozy mystery girl at heart. I don’t knit, although I’ve tried several times, I quilt and I’m trying to get back into making clothes. I would LOVE to see those pants if you end up making them!! They would be so fun to wear! I have been watching your podcasts for years and I realized that I haven’t subscribed 😳 so I am pushing the subscribe button and bell today. Hi, I am 80 years old and I definitely remember the term golden. I didn’t hear chief until I was a grown-up, and whenever that happened. I also remember that flannel was called Alvin as in Alvin shirts, or Alvin pajamas. Another good one is the word ugly. My grandmother use that word, she was a southerner, to describe in the action by one of us that was rude or unjust. And another one was icebox, which I definitely remember. An icebox eventually became a fridge. And, oh yes, cars were called automobiles by everyone. And, when I use the word. And when I use the word kids, my grandmother always reminded me that kids were baby goat. I love how the lexicon has changed over the years. It’s kind of fun.

The mango/green pepper thing must have been regional. I'm from New England and the first time my midwestern sisters-in-law talked about mangos, I had no idea they were talking about peppers. I assumed it was the fruit which was very strange in the context of the recipe we were discussing.

Love the conversation about compliments and I learned something new. My (42 year old) daughter and I have had a lot of conversations about this topic and both have worked hard to reprogram ourselves from diet and weight cultural programming. I’ve changed a lot of my behaviors about this. However, I have never thought about the term “flattering” as being related or about someone’s body until you raised this in your episode. I might have even been one of the people who used that term trying to say I loved your jacket, sweater etc. I don’t know if I did, but until today, I might have. If I did, I’m sorry to have made you uncomfortable in any way. I appreciate you and I especially appreciate this conversation. While not a fat person, I struggled with body image most of my life. If I could go back and do one thing differently in parenting my daughters, it would be to never mention body image, weight, or diets the whole time they were in my care. I’m happy to report that the next generation of our family will never have those conversations within our households.

I am unlearning this phrase too (and the baggage it carries) because I often say "flattering" about a color suiting someone. I think it's okay to acknowledge that people look especially great in specific colors, but then I feel a little weird trying to figure out the right phrasing. I am definitely not into body commentary, but do love giving compliments.

I am still going to think you are beautiful. On days I catch a current podcast and I am super struggling and something that made you excited gave me a ray of sunshine I might tell you again. It has very little to do with your body and more to do with you being you. Oh yea. Make the pants because why not?

Thank you for an interesting and informative discussion today. I know I did that to you a few months ago and I am now very sorry for it.. if you deleted my post, that is OK with me. In the seven decades of my life, I have lost weight any number of times, and every time it got to the point where people started noticing and complementing me on it I immediately gained it all back. That’s how messed up I am. my friend, and I both agreed that we would not mention it to each other when we had lost weight because we both had exactly the same story. I appreciate the information you gave me today. I guess you can always teach this old dog a new trick. All that being said, fat chicks are fun. Not all of my friends are fat, but obviously we gravitate towards each other sometimes because of shared experiences.. onto a different topic. As a little 15 minute distraction on TH-cam, I watch a little video channel called cups and thoughts. Aesthetically it really plays me and it’s short. I bring this up because not only do I think you might enjoy it, but she just finished reading Yellowface. I think you might find that book interesting. I also find it fascinating that the person who makes cups and thoughts is a book annotator and that is endlessly interesting to watch so I’m glad she keeps it short. You talk about doppelgänger is what reminded me of this book. Going off now to Google barrel pants. 🤣😂

A couple of friends started a podcast called "Favorite Bougie Aunties" that I think you'll like. Pop culture focused. Smart but not too "thinky." And funny. That's so wild about nostalgia. I wonder how capitalism interfaces with that. It seems like we are "sold" nostalgia or sold items through nostalgia. Hmmm.

I actually just do straight line quilting on my home machine…I haven’t delved into free motion. I have sent a quilt out for quilting, and now my mom has a long arm, so she has also quilted one of mine for me.

It's SO rude to comment on someone's body!! I think it's an assertion of 'power over' because it's rooted in judgment. Also! wtf?! it's a bunch of patriarchal malarky to (try to) keep women focussed on their looks. Seriously! There are SO many other dimensions of a person, why not encourage those?
