I'm Aussie. For clarification - Slices are a type of recipe / cooking. They are not just "bars", they can be cheese cakes, pastries, fudges, cakes, layered sweets, even with jello.
Im an Aussie too, I think they also can be referred to as Tray Bakes,, (maybe thats england) so like anything made in a tray that can be sliced into bars or squares for lunchboxes or afternoon teas or church pot lucks.....
Another Aussie here - you’re absolutely right that slices are more than just bars. I think that we probably eat a lot of these types of things instead of cookies - I know that growing up if we had people coming over/we were going on a picnic or a road trip my mum would whip up a slice. From what I’ve seen of Americans that cook from scratch they’re more likely to make cookies or bars for those same instances.
@@soilandsazon Hi, not really because you could give someone a slice of pie or high cake and that would be called pie and cake. A "slice" is made in a low height rectangular or square tray or bake pan, rather than a pie dish or cake or bread pan. The finished item if then sliced to remove from the tray etc. Many types of food, especially desert, cake be made in a "slice" style. In my part of Oz I've never seen "breakfast bakes" done, unlike I see on a lot of US sites. Although depending upon ingredients, we might call something similar a baked quiche. Our breakfasts in general, seem to be much less sweet than the US breakfasts.
This is similar to my date honey bars. 2 cups of diced dates, 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/3 cup of water. Cook until it looks like honey then add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Add 2 cups of oats and 1 cup of raisins. Spread it all on a parchment lined 8x8 dish and bake at 350 for 15 to 18 minutes
Gidday Chrissy what a lovely surprise to see you on the other side in Jess' kitchen cooking a version of a slice. Yes I'm an Aussie who has been watching Jess & family on Roots & Refuge Farm almost since she started the channel.
She seems like SUCH a comforting person. For those of us who didn’t get to experience that I imagine she’s the kind of mom who would make you a cup of tea, bring you a blanket and snuggle you on the couch when you’re having big feelings and give you complete peace without saying a word. I’m gonna call it a “mug person”-Warmth, comfort, peace and kindness. I just want her to hug me! Lol
My goodness I feel silly. Several months ago my 20 year old son called me at 11:30ish at night. I had been asleep for hours. He was in tears and asked if he could come sleep on my couch. We hung up and I promptly located his favorite fuzzy blanket and threw a sheet on the couch along with some clean pillows. I turned on a kettle and brewed us some tea while I waited for him to get to my house and we sat on the couch and cried together over “big feelings” as we sipped tea together and the tears subsided and morphed into stifled chuckles so we wouldn’t wake the rest of the house. And now here I am this morning (at work) and I see this comment and think to myself… I am a mug momma. A kindred spirit on the inter webs gave it a name. And at that thought I started crying happy tears because I am so grateful that my children as adults now, feel comforted enough by my presence that they aren’t afraid to call me and interrupt my sleep to feel big feelings with me instead of feeling alone on top of the other stuff. Thank you for that little moment and the name. That really blessed me this morning!
Oh these are so delicious! Chrissy and her wonderful family came to help us butcher chickens last summer and she brought this dessert. I've been dreaming about it ever since. I need to go make this now!!!
Thank you! ❤ I used to make these bars and cookies all the time for my family with none ever being wasted. I was the mom who had vegetable sticks and fruit in her game bag, but in high school we’d bring a bowl of lollipops to keep the loud spectators quieter 😂
I would love this with maybe a shredded coconut and slivered almond situation (maybe some chia seeds or wheat germ) 🤤 this is great though because you dont have to heat up your oven!
That sounds delicious with coconut and almonds! I guess you could add pretty much whatever you like except the chocolate chips since she said they just melted. Maybe add them on top.
I love reading the comments on recipes like this! Every family has their own variations on favorites…. I made these right after I watched! I added craisins and pepitas to mine…. Delish!
Love these! My New Zealand version uses just honey and we like to add all sorts of different dried fruits depending on what's in the dehydrator at the time, sometimes chopped nuts and seeds, and once the mixture is in the tin press choc chips onto the top - YUM!
I've been looking for a oat bar recipe for years! My grandma use to make them for us when we were children and I would love to make them for my family! Thank you!
I’m LOVING this new channel Jess! I just made this recipe for the third time. For one batch I left out the raisins and added 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the mixture when it was simmering. Wow! That was so delicious too!
I loveeeee this! My family always jokes we are an ingredient household- so I’m trying to have better snacks this year and keep to cooking from scratch. I would love to see a snack series! Thanks for this!
Avoiding processed foods and having snacks for the kids can be a challenge. I really appreciate this and if that's the type of videos she'll be sharing, I will definitely check out her channel! It's so nice of you to promote your friends.
It brought back fond memories when you were talking about cultural difference. About 30 years ago, I worked as a camp counsellor at Camp Courage near Minneapolis, Minnesota. There was 4 of us sharing a room: myself a Canadian, an American, an Australian, and a woman from New Zealand. We were all English speaking but yet had a completely differences vocabulary
Adorable! Thanks for sharing your friend with us. Enjoyed the videos you shared with us at home with your newer friend visiting. God sure does know who we need in our lives. Xoxo
I loved her broth video, she explained why my broth tastes bitter, I always overcooked it in my Nesco much longer than 24 hours! Longer cooking is not better. Thanks! I am not using sugar or honey but when I do go back to eating honey, I will try these.
Thank you so much for the great recipe idea! Also visited Carrie"s channel yesterday and loved the video of your first snow! So awesome! Blessings on your day Kiddos!🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿ps thank you Jess for introducing Carrie to us!💕
What a joyful sharing of knowledge🥰. Thank you Jess for bringing your friend from down under on to share her knowledge and recipe with us! I don't have littles in the house anymore but if I stuff I would totally make sure slice 😉
Thanks for the introduction Jess. I am going to check her new page out. I have been following all along on Roots & Refuge and now the farmers table. Hello from Texas as well!
Great fun with you two in the kitchen; thanks for sharing! In western Canada, we called these “squares”, probably because they were often cut into squares 😅 Blessings to everyone 🤗🇨🇦
Yes! We totally need this stuff! I love how authentic you both are in the kitchen, its great to watch and is so encouraging for someone thats not use to cooking from scratch. Videos like this are gold! Keep em coming girl!
These are similar to flapjacks in the UK. Except, we use golden syrup instead of honey, and we don't put in peanut butter. It is also baked for about 20 mins.
In the US flapjacks are pancakes. But even our version of pancake is probably different. I know in France what they call a pancake is what we would call a crepe. It's so interesting hearing the differences.
Impeccable timing!! Was just starting to think I need to learn to make my kids homemade granola bars, as I was just at the store reading food labels and finding all sorts of nasty ingredients but yet the healthier versions tend to have large chunks of nuts that my kids wouldn’t touch. Thank you, thank you!!!
Simple hint for adding sticky ingredients, if there is an oil of any type in the recipe, add it before the sticky stuff and the oil will help the sticky stuff not stick to the measuring cup/spoon. If its butter melt it in the micro first to coat the measuring spoon/cup.
Lovely recipe! Thanks for sharing and welcome Carrie! Chocolate chip cookies will now be called chock chip bikky in my house 😅 love it! Subscribed to your channel 😊 blessings from a fellow Texan! We are in south TX ❤
Jess can you please do a show talking g about samples of what you and the boys eat for lunches and ideas of what normal suppers are for you guys? Needing inspiration to ideas so we don’t eat cheap fast food stuff!
So glad you introduced her to us, I’m definitely going to subscribe to her channel! At first I thought this recipe would be similar to flapjacks in England, in a way it is but we bake ours and usually use golden syrup instead of honey💙 I will give this a go I think but leave out the raisins 🙈
We have the same thing here but instead of in a pan to cut into bats we make them into drop cookies. Just drop by tablespoons on parchment and they setup and are ready to eat. 🇨🇦
So much fun watching you two and hearing all the Aussie things. Looking forward to making the recipe too. I've only ever made ones where nothing was heated.
Jess, I would love to know if you perfected the beet salad you mentioned last year and if (when your beets are ready to harvest) you would demonstrate what you do...
Yayyy! Love to see some Aussie stuff 😁 I make this with chopped almonds and walnuts and choc chips ontop once it’s almost cool, I’ve always known them as muesli bars growing up They freeze really well too 😊
The recipe looks like something I would love. I'm definitely gonna check out her channel if for no other reason than to listen to her talk haha! I'm sure she has lovely content as well! Thanks for sharing!
their channel is almost at 2k subs now! i was just under 1k when i subbed last night... awesome! this is how i make granola bars... minus sultanas/raisins... lol!
Thanks for all the love people! I had so much fun making this with Jess and then afterwards meeting so many of you over on my channel! Blessings 💛💛
It was awesome seeing you on the show again! So you use old fashioned or quick oats?
That is the sign of someone you’ve really taken to heart as a friend: You let her cook in your kitchen. 😅 ❤
Just made them using chocolate chips pressed into the bars at the end instead of raisins - my family LOVES them!!
Just made it. Had a mix of cherries, cranberries and pecans in the pantry - I think it was meant as a prepared salad topper… made a beautiful bar.

Yum ! Dip the bottom of the bar in melted dark chocolate

So we're gonna need more Australian cooking videos😂🫶 this was sweet to watch.

Love this recipe. Adding craisins or sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds amps it up.👌
Just made this with the unsweetened sun butter I bought that my kids hate. It’s delicious and they can take it to school.
I’m LOVING this new channel Jess!

This is so similar to how I make granola bars. So fun to learn how people/cultures can be different and similar all at once

What is golden syrup
@@loukrudewig3414like corn syrup
Golden Syrup has a wonderful flavour like really buttery caramel. I think you can substitute light treacle in the US or corn syrup.
Thanks for sharing Chrissy and her cooking skills with us.
love love love love this!!! Welcome to America, thank you for teaching us how to make Slice. I will be making it tomorrow.
Welcome to America Chrissy! May all your dreams come true while you settle in. 😀
This was fabulous! I just subscribed to her channel. What a beautiful friend you have. She is such a blessing and so much fun! Hugs❤

Awesome tutorial Ms. Jessica. One can tell that's a woman who knows her way around a kitchen. God bless you and her family's.

Delightful fun. Guest Bakers. I learned something, too. It was fun just hanging out. Thankful heart ❤
G'day mate. My favorite slice is the good old Jelly slice.
Looks like a lovely recipe! Love her accent 💕 Thanks for sharing!
You guys are so sweet! Looks delish!! 😊
This was wonderfully simple! I agree with more of these type of Aussie recipes.😋
These are probably what I'd call a granola bar. I am going to have to try this recipe!
Flapjack for me in 🇬🇧 🙌🏼
Ok this was SO MUCH FUN LADIES! I love you two together and have subscribed to Chrissy’s channel!❤❤❤❤❤❤

Just need some cinnamon for me. They look delicious!
You two are a delight!!
Thank you I’m definitely making this I think it would be easy to adjust like maybe with almond butter and dried cherries 🍒 to change it up❤️
Nice to meet your friend. The bars looked good and healthy
Jess can you please do a show talking g about samples of what you and the boys eat for lunches and ideas of what normal suppers are for you guys? Needing inspiration to ideas so we don’t eat cheap fast food stuff!

Sunflower seeds would be good and dried fruit. Yum.
So much fun watching you two and hearing all the Aussie things.
Looking forward to making the recipe too. I've only ever made ones where nothing was heated.
Awesomeness ❤
This sounds yummy, but with mini chocolate chips instead of raisins!!😁
Jess, I would love to know if you perfected the beet salad you mentioned last year and if (when your beets are ready to harvest) you would demonstrate what you do...
We love zucchini slice in the summer. Great for bfast, lunch or dinner.
Very nice and thank you. I might put the choc chips on top after you put it in the pan. Maybe some coconut. I will not be buying snack bars anymore ❤
Similar to our No Bake Cookies except no cocoa. Looks delicious.
That’s what I was thinking. FYI, try a little cayenne in our no bake cookies. So yummy.
this is interesting thank you for sharing❤❤❤
Oh Jess you continue to amaze me! Your friend kinda reminds me of you when you’re cooking! Of course you guys became fast friends ❤❤❤❤
