so great to see them together; i agree with those who miss the days of real "live" tv. and Mike Douglas was a square who knew talent and let them display it without interference! what a gem.
janejetsonbot Yes so true. Mike was so respectable to his guest. I loved the show. Mike always had icons on his show. That square always had the best people on his stage !!!*** I really miss that show.
I saw Sly & the Family Stone in 1974, and they were Incredible!! Bob Marley & the Whalers opened for them! This video is awesome with Pryor. First time I've seen it!
Hey all you ignorant people.!! Please don't rip SLY. So what if hes juiced.Hes a legend and made all of our days better because of his music. Its like medicine baby.He and JOHNNY WATSON gave us real music.Well i think so. And im a white cat who was affected by them and Maurice White as well. So just dig it .
Vintage footage of one of the greatest musical talent in the history of music and one of the greatest comedians in the history of comedy. I love shit like this!
Great clip! Get over yourselves with the drug bullshit. They were having a good time. Sly is Sly. And Richard, oh Richard, he was just wonderful Richard. They were having fun. I love it. Thanks!
What clip did you watch? Both were extremely high, and Sly seems genuinely perturbed that Pryor started goofing off during ruined the song. Maybe they had a half-assed bit planned, but clearly didn’t spend much time working on it
You know all jokes aside- if there was no Sly I dont think there would of been a Prince. Look at the fashion and the presents. I cant wait until the next super nova mega talent comes out; he or she will have the same natural serious but with a sense of humor gift that those two gentlemen had. Michael Jackson was more out of the James Brown Jackie Wilson vocal dance arm of our American talent. My childhood was spent in this era. I absorbed it just as the mega talents did.
Prince also got his style from Curtis mayfield also and kiss was one of the bands that prince liked . Maybe princes style of dressing could've been inspired from superfly sly . But it makes sense because all musicians got a few bands that inspired them . Some of my inspirations were black sabbath , kiss , hendrix and prince and Morris day had their parts in me becoming a bass player . But prince was a great guitarist
STRAIGHT HILARIOUS.Can you imagine soccer moms and joe public in middle america's watching this in the afternoon? I can tell it was semi-staged because Richard only called him a chump! LOL!! 2 legends.
SLY and RICH! In the same room! At their prime (nearly)! Looooove this. Just look at SLY and the way he just jam along with this novice drummer, this is true rhythm genius if you ask me.
Charlie Sheen had to try to top it in his own way, less talent though, so fuck the drugs, unless they help your talent come out, and that's a slippery slope as history shows...
Like it or not, this was REAL. Nothing is real anymore. Improvisation? Nowadays? Yeah, right. These guys were just riffing. Live. Real. Both men incredible talents. Who gives a rip about the drugs. They did them. Get over it. Was it good for them? That's their business.
Sylvester Stewart (born March 15, 1943), better known by his stage name Sly Stone, is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer who is most famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, playing a critical role in the development of funk with his pioneering fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia and gospel in the 1960s and 1970s. AllMusic stated that "James Brown may have invented funk, but Sly Stone perfected it," and credited him with "creating a series of euphoric yet politically charged records that proved a massive influence on artists of all musical and cultural backgrounds." Crawdaddy! has called him "the founder of progressive soul".
+Zack Kutler I really hope you get a grip and. talk to any and every artist James Brown influenced especially the rock artists you think are legends and pioneers.Jeff Buckley's never ever had a # 1 record ,only made one album before he died.
Sly had a stroke and around 1980 he and George Clinton had started working on recordings. George moved to Tallahassee Florida and they really did more records, Sly feld on hard times, but George helping the both of them get clean and get legal matters with their music to recoup money's worth millions that was stolen from their music !
Stevie Wonder should of joined them to play "Too High"....you know what I mean. Love Rich and Sly but damn pass the bong to the audience too...while your at it...give Mike Douglas a couple hitz.
EVERYONE who has done high quality coke in large amounts will recognise it in others when they see it. If you don't think they are high, well.............You ain't done the real McCoy ;)
I don't think they were high. I think it was unscripted, and they were just sort of winging it. Now, after the show was probably a whole different story.

I love how Sly slides into one of the best songs ever written so easily.

@@MrBiggin49 Sly is far from ignorant. One of the truly great influences in American music.
Got to admit.. for a minute there.. "If you want me to stay" was pretty tight
Agreed. Wish he had a whole band there to do a few songs from Fresh.
Tighter than my neighbor’s sister. That’s not an easy tune to play without rehearsal. Andy Newmark had his own fills that weren’t easy to mimic.
God I miss those days.

Sly's funky piano stylings take you higher
Richard could really think on his feet, he keeps the show goin throughout alot of back and forth from sly. They're both legends.
I disagree. He looked pissed and lost.
Agree
Wish there were more Mike Douglas' in the world.
4:00 "whatchu gonna do man, really?" jokes over for Sly, it's music time heh heh
2 legends. Loved watching this
Two absolute geniuses of their crafts! The funniest and the funkiest hands down no contest game ova!
Oh', and Mike was a damn good host as well!
Despite how fucked up both Sly and Richard are, this is pure comedic genius!

mike was visionary and out the box person and wouldnt get shooked or scared if every thing wasnt scripted.
Khaba Sahure' Mike had a great show tho , he always had icons on his show and showed them respect. Mike was most pleasant as a host.
He knew better than to put a non-drummer on the drums, but he was crazy enough to experiment.
Classic brothers with Mike. Beautiful....
Rock Short you are GENIUS! GREAT FIND! So much talent on one stage
mike douglas was a must see always for me.. of course sly and richard.. damn!
What a wreck! Amazing!
Fans love to see those kind of off the cuff appearances.
Mike was great
OK, Sly was so far gone even by 1974 but when he puts his hands n that keyboard the righteousness just begins.
Wow, I thank you so much for posting this.
Pryor is the funniest comedian there ever was
Along with George Carlin, yeah.....
Him and Gallagher.

A shame Pryor couldn't maintain the beat. Would've been cool to see Sly get into the song and finish it.
Trinidad James stole Sly's swag
Corey Adams I thought I was the only one that noticed that
