Hey Eugene, all your videos have been great and help me build a couple of bikes. First one I built, was for my dad, and I miss riding it so much that I had to build another one for myself. Now I'm building one for my girlfriend but this one's a four stroke the last two were two strokes. Some people just don't get it, on these builds, now all my builds are with huffy beach cruisers and I've had no problems. One of these days I'd love to have you build me a board track racer with a 4 stroke engine, with a in tank frame. Thanks for the videos Jason.
excelent way of tighten the bolts up, my Sprocket was bending a little bit makeing my chain go from hard to loose. tomorrow i'll try this way, thank you very much!
Thanks for the tips, I`ve got 4 tanks ran thru 40 to 1 keeps the plug clean , I also went with a 52 tooth sprocket I`m a little hefty, and used better quality bolts for my rag joint, so far so good
good tutorial. If you are in a hurry, or don't care about maybe replacing the rear wheel within the year, you can also simply remove the dust cap and throw it out.
This is like the 3rd time I've seen people having to grind out the center of a new sprocket and or the dust cap as well to get shit to fit on standard hubs and shit over years timeframe? Are you telling me they still don't just make sprockets inside diameters by the millimeter that just freaking bolt on? Geez, drag racers wouldn't put up with that shit for this long. God bless you. 😢
Pro tip, if you get rid of those cages you can fit all the bearings that should be in there. Just use some thick grease to hold them in during assembly, local hardware should have loose bearings same size as those in your caged ones.
I used about 6 to 8 small zip ties and Loosely sat them around the sprocket while the rim and tire laid flat. It went in perfectly and afterwards all I did was cut the zip ties as close as I could get to the sprocket
Thank you so much fam, you really helped me out, I'm about to build a motorbike and needed help with understanding the sprocket part and you helped me with that and more resourceful tips, thank you for taking your time out of your day to show us that :)
I never use a rag joint. I spend the 15 or 20 dollars for a hub adapter. Faster, stronger, and much easier to install. I have never bent a spoke, or had a failure. Good luck with your builds.
I'd rather spend the $20 on a good bottle of vino. However do what keeps you on the road. I went thru hell figuring out ragjoints but once you figure it out, they are solid
Hi guys, I ported and polished, plus give me more torque and my cnc aluminum adapter I paid $30 Buck broken my 12 gauge spokes so I back to the Rag Joints and worked perfectly,
I had problems installing the sprocket due to a few spokes being in the way and going off center when when starting to tighen the bolts followed the instructions. After a hour or so of being frustrated so I came up with a idea to use a socket that fit perfectly in the center of the sprocket hole and made sure that was centered, (it basically centered itself) and of course used the tire nut to tighen the socket down tight on the hub and then the sprocket was very much centered and I could tighen up the socket to the spokes with sprocket staying in the center. I'm sure it could be off by a millimeter or two but when I measured everything when done I couldn't tell if it was off centered. No problems peddling or running the engine at top speed.
Thanks for this video. I bought a 49cc bike off of craigslist for $60. Worked fine for a week and then the chain popped off. The rear wheel bearings got a little bit loose. Also the sprocket is at an angle. Wasn't sure how to adjust everything until I seen this video.
*So far this has been the best video walk through on youtube. Actually walking me through as Im doing it.. BikeBerry crap isnt very realistic.* So thankyou. I think I have seen you in the facebook groups..?
wpeople dont like the rag joint but i do..I didnt at first but after you get your method down its all cake and they are soooo cheap and work great..if im browsing and catch one for sale for 5 to 7 bucks i order it and just put a back wheel together for standby I have 4 standby a now..take care and peace
If you don't want to bend the brake arm you can exchange the bolts with round head hex bolts. Helped me! To verify if your sprocket is concentric with the wheel, measure from the center stud to the valley between the teeth at several apposing locations. You can tap the sprocket with a rubber mallet to help move it around, as your tightening the bolts. Great Hobby!
My bike doesn't have a brake arm and doesn't brake if I pedal backwards, but it can still coast without the pedals moving does this mean I also have to remove something from the hub? There is a bolt and then a slightly larger circle bolt behind it
the best thing to do when you put on your washer and lock washer is to dip them into the grease to hold them on also painters tape on the heads of the bolts will help you hold them as you put everything together
Hughes I have a beach cruiser but I have 3.0 tires on the beach cruiser and the chain is rubbing up against the 3.0 tire how can I extend the sprocket on the back so the chain will not be biting into my 3.0 tires
I was hoping someone would explain how to adjust the sprocket position by tightening and loosening the bolts. It sure doesn't seem to respond the way you think with the spokes. Can't find a video on that anywhere.
All I have with this so-called rag joint is problems, so I replaced them with the aluminum billet sprocket set up that perfectly centers the sprocket in alinement. I drilled the 3 bolt holes in the 50-tooth sprocket so I could use it because I don't need speed, I need power
Dont some rear tires have really small ball bearings inside the axel? If so how would you grease the axel without losing them? Because if they fall out putting them back is a near impossible task....
How can I contact you to do this for me I’m willing to pay whatever at this point I just installed my 36t and chain keeps popping off I originally bought the bike off someone
The easy way to align the sprocket , with small pipe the diameter of the outside hub and a washer with the inside nut diameter you can push and align almost perfect the sprocket,in my case my sprocket inside diameter was a about 1/8 bigger than the outside hub so I use electrical tape Araund the hub to fit the gap,the align was pretty easy. I’m not and English speaker but hope it help .
I noticed you didn't put the dust cover back on over the bearings. I had mine on and when I tightened down the rag joint, my wheel wouldn't turn until I loosened up the bolts because the rag joint sprocket was pushing the dust cover too tight against the bearings. So I guess it's ok to leave the dust cover off?
I never used the dust cover. Never had a problem. I do inspect the hubs every month or so. I've had bearing races disintegrate and once that happens the whole hub is shot.
Building my first one..looks like i gotta take the sprocket off and turn the cone out..my kit only came w/2 brackets for the back (all holes are covered) so I tightened in a star pattern..off topic does the intake really have to be parallel to the ground? Some bikes in your other vids don't look even close to parallel...
This was a good video. However the viewer who does not have experience with how to tighten bearings in would probably do better to leave them alone, and just trust the amount of grease in the wheel (if it's new). This guy is a pro and a newbie might do more harm than good.
3 fingers really needed, it can take a few minutes or a few hours to get this part together, put a hole in a box, lay the rim on it, t'll keep the screws from falling out.
I got a huffy wheel and the coaster arm is hitting the bolt heads of the sprocket .im going to put a spacer washer or bend the coaster arm to fix it but man it was a dissapointment interupted my plans
Why is there not a alignment disk that bolts on to the axle that keeps the the sprocket center when you install this on your wheel? When you buy a clutch /pressure plate kit for your car they include a alignment tool with the kit.
Im having issues with mine, when i remove the brake arn the whole thing comes out. the arm seems to be attached with the bearing. it doesnt come off like the one you have. Do i need to buy another wheel or how do i remove it? its a beach cruiser and it brakes by pushing the pedals backwards
I think the fact they call this a rag joint is kind of funny. It as actually a compression joint if you want a proper old fashion term. Rag joints where two shafts where they rapped rags in a direction opposite of the d direction was turning to join them with a friction hold. Compression joints where used on plates and gears if on cracked to hold a spare on or keep a broken one functional
Hi there great video saved me ton of time as a newby. Quick question I'm running 700c wheels what is your Recommendation for gear size I live mostly hilly area Thank you
The 12 gauge spokes and rim width make that heavy duty wheel appear to be strong, but how does the axle hold up against bending? Chromoly or regular steel?

You can use a 1 1/16 1/2 short well socket to hold the sproket center. While you tighten your sproket to the wheel. It also helps to make another ring to put over the 3 pieces on the inside around the hub. It keeps the 3 pieces centered and they wont over lap each other. On freewheel or cassette hubs, it's a 1inch 1/2 shortwhell socket (beach cruisers) mtb are uasllay 1 3/16 socket. Some axles are long enough to put the nut on to keep the socket centered. On some 64 tooth steel sprockets you have to use a round file. To bevel the edge. If you have a steel hub and steel sproket. You can take apart the hub. And spot weld the sproket to the hub. Just keep in mind if your running wide tires. 2.00, 2.75 etc the sproket has to be the widest spacer on the out side. Or you chain will hit your tire.
In need of some advice from some of you guys out there" or girls" I bought a Kit motor and it says to complete the pancake part of it you take the two pieces of rubber cut one in between the holes slide it in no problem then you take three pieces of metal put it up against that rubber on the inside of the spokes and press some up against another piece of rubber in there and connect those three pieces of metal to two pieces of metal two plates rounded plate with holes in them so that would complete your pancake but mine didn't come with that mine came with just the three pieces of metal you know the rounded curved metal with three holes in each one to make the nine hole pattern so do I go ahead and use just those three pieces or am I supposed to go out and buy some buy those other two plates somewhere else or some some other way to do this can somebody please help me with this I'm really stuck

dougsr8745 Just put mine together today (twice) and can feel an hear somethings wrong have boiled it down to dust cover. Sprocket has it smashed together an creating lots of friction. Watched a few vids an some get rid of it an this guy ground it off. Pick ur poison. Guess I'm getting ready for round three SMDH
Shouldn't the rear wheel be tuned first ? If the spokes arent correct I dont see how the sprocket can be. Im tune both wheels before I even look at the engine. 2 cents worth.
i am so glad adapters are a thing now. never again will i EVER have to deal with one of these rag joint sprocket installations. hate them hate them hate them
I've built at least 100. Never a problem once I learned the correct way to install it. The hub adapter ones can bend spokes and deform wheel. If on a budget or simply a cheapskate like me the rag joint works fine.
They both have their pluses and minuses. I'd prefer a steel wheel with machined in mounting holes as part of the hub. Expensive, so.. No go for me. Too cheap. But.... I'll go to Husky Bike's website. They sell Industrial bikes and parts. They sell heavy steel wheels w/ 11ga spokes and even a moped style front hub brake w/ 11ga spokes and heavy steel wheels and use a rag joint on the rear coaster one
Paul Metcalf, I weigh 180 pounds, I've used my adapter on two different wheels with no slippage, and those three bolts are 3/8" thick and are made of hardened steel. Almost everything you said is wrong.
why does everyone go fucking crazy installing the sprocket washers? it's not a make or break if the gear isn't centered perfect. put one bolt In at a time, follow by using a rubber mallet. it's not hard at all this way
Great video! In the old days,(I started building motorbikes in 1968 or so,8th grade) I never had trouble with the spoke's rings coming off of the hub!China bikes arent welded to the hub. They are pressed onto a fine 'splined' edge. Their brngs.are suspect,at best.Thank God for The welder. Most of my bikes are antique, but I do have some with cheap rims.Check 'em out! John wade, you tube.thanks.
Demitri Stepanian actually it will work with disc brakes but you need to get 120 millimeter rear rotor or use a rotor sprocket from the Mini Bike World I use disc brake hubs and build an adapter for the sprocket no disc brake I rely on the rim brakes for stopping if you get a narrow enough hub or used plenty of spacing you can put the disc brake and the sprocket together tight fit though

Also,he's correct, book says dish in,but then its to close to wheel.I had to switch mine like his here.FOLLOW THIS GUYS VIDEO!!!
Make it look just like shown in the video. If you still have issues, take some good pics and post on my facebook group facebook.com/groups/hughesmotorized
Why don't you just tighten the bolts in a criss cross patern like you do when putting a car wheel on it worked for me.
Does the sprocket has a direction? Or I can turn it over?
??
I'm glad I saw this video before the install. Thanks!
You don't need to grind off the dust cover cause the sprocket never gets that close to the wheel...the rubber keeps the sprocket off the wheel.
dougsr8745 Just put mine together today (twice) and can feel an hear somethings wrong have boiled it down to dust cover. Sprocket has it smashed together an creating lots of friction. Watched a few vids an some get rid of it an this guy ground it off. Pick ur poison. Guess I'm getting ready for round three SMDH
Why did you install the sprocket backwards?
no...not backwards
Excellent job, very thorough, very helpful thanks brother
Shouldn't the rear wheel be tuned first ? If the spokes arent correct I dont see how the sprocket can be. Im tune both wheels before I even look at the engine. 2 cents worth.
This is very helpful, sir
Glad to hear that
Wouldn't it be easier to put the washer on the outside?
lockwasher is to go under the hex nut
never ever will I use a rag joint. been there done that. cnc sprocket adapter is the only way to go.
built 100s. My daily rider for 4 years... rag joint. NEVER a problem
My rag joints are old do that matter
As long as the rubber part is still in good shape. Run it
What link?
i am so glad adapters are a thing now. never again will i EVER have to deal with one of these rag joint sprocket installations. hate them hate them hate them
are these 12 gauge spokes?
Yes
Thx so much I got it done
This is a hassle very old system, install the upgrade rear hub bracket n sprocket kit way better setup n performance.
I've built at least 100. Never a problem once I learned the correct way to install it. The hub adapter ones can bend spokes and deform wheel. If on a budget or simply a cheapskate like me the rag joint works fine.
He has it mounted opposite of the way I've been doing it
Hmm gotta be another way to mount the sprocket
The best way to use a rag joint sprocket is to throw it in the trash, then get a hub mount.
I've built 100s. Once you master a rag joint. You good. been riding my daily rider for 4 years now. Rag joint never an issue
HoustonMotorized, good point. I was using a rag joint on an aluminum rim.
Almost everything you said is wrong.
why does everyone go fucking crazy installing the sprocket washers? it's not a make or break if the gear isn't centered perfect. put one bolt In at a time, follow by using a rubber mallet. it's not hard at all this way
Thank you sir
Welcome
I have bike motor good great as clutch broke bolt lose need get new as order two clutch coming n g Wednesday 9th November.
Wtf i cant remove the nuts iff the sprocket theyre just on a free spin
48 people didn't register their brake arm now they have no license lol
Chamblizi The All Mighty! LMAO
John wade, you tube.thanks.
can this work with a disc brake
DK BMX no because it would interfere with the installation mate
Demitri Stepanian actually it will work with disc brakes but you need to get 120 millimeter rear rotor or use a rotor sprocket from the Mini Bike World I use disc brake hubs and build an adapter for the sprocket no disc brake I rely on the rim brakes for stopping if you get a narrow enough hub or used plenty of spacing you can put the disc brake and the sprocket together tight fit though
