Update: here is a much faster and easier way to adjust your wheel bearings.

Finally somebody has taken the time to explain it properly! I built my bike in 2009! And have more than 10000 miles on it, I didn’t rebuild the engine until it had 9000 miles on it! Regular lube jobs on the rear hub are the key! Great video👍
instablaster...
Thank you for this! I was ready to put mine on not knowing the obstacle I was about to hit! Thought I had it all dialed in and ready to mount lol You are appreciated!
Glad it helped! I later found a much faster way to do this btw. Link is in the description.
Been there ,What you need is one of those paper thin 15mm wrenches. Allows you to adjust the Hub tension easily when it's on the bike. The problem i run into is i get it perfect the way I want it, then once I wrestle with it to get it on the bicycle, it's already out of whack again. So you just go in with the paper thin wrench after-the-fact and adjust it.
Gonna grind one down tomorrow. I don't even want the damn brake
Cone wrenches nut necessary on coaster brake hub. Adjustment much easier on brake arm side. Can be done on bike also
This just happened to me today. I bought my first motor kit, took off the break arm, installed the sprocket and then realized the wheel wouldn't spin freely. Thankfully I noticed before putting the wheel back on and moving forward. But it took me forever to figure it out. And now I'm done for the night after I got it and now finally found this video
The one person who thumbed this down is still trying to find the sweet spot .
Keep trying Lil buddy you'll get it !!!!!
I've been rebuilding coaster brakes since 1976 .
You gave a simple and eloquent explanation of a marvelous masterpiece .
Don't forget high temp grease !
Probably thumbed down because he didn't actually put a sprocket on the wheel. I have no idea how you're supposed to do this without the sprocket rubbing on the brake arm. You have two pieces that need to move freely that are literally tightened down onto each other.
Geez after 3 years of building motorized bikes I know know why my bearing in my coaster break never last more than 2/3 month’s 😂 thanks for the info saved me 💯
it took me a while to get it adjusted right, I'm using a nel lusso as my first build, also went as far as removing the coaster brake pads inside the hub and repacked with grease while i had it apart, installed front and rear brakes on a dbl pull handle with kill switch with the stock throttle handle. used a cnc hub adapter for a 1.5in. hub. the build was fun, cant wait for the break in,, Love your content, VA laws here make it difficult for them on the paved roads, have to see DMV to see if i need to tag it, 50cc or less is considered moped but what i understand still needs a tag, 50cc or higher is a motorcycle needs tag title and insurance, so its a 48cc lol
Coaster break, a true love-hate relationship.
Just a tip, if you use a digital torque wrench you can see the EXACT inch or foot pounds the nut loosens at so you know what to tighten it to.
Gd that's smart as hell
You’re not tightening a nut. You’re tightening an arm
You saved me a hell of a lot of trouble, I was just looking up how to take the break arm off and I learned all thsi
Brother, again, you come to my rescue! Thanks for the video! I'm going to have to grind down my sprocket.
Thank you. I have done this on 13 bikes already and never knew what exactly it was that I was doing...but still got it done after many tries. Now I know the exact procedure
Anyway you could help me I have coaster brake arm on my bike and I’m trying to install sprocket
I found an easier way to do this. Instead of using your legs, use the corner of a wall to jam the coaster arm to stay in place (the wheel will be upright). I found that I was able to have more control and was able to adjust the tightness of the wheel bearings gradually.
I can't believe I seriously found this after 3 hours of dealing with it!
Thanks man!
You just saved my hub bearings :)
I had definitely over tightened mine!
Thanks again! :)
Who keeps putting these thumbs down on your videos??? They gotta be insane or breathing in too much exhaust.
you made my dad's day I appreciate the help, thanks again!
Gotta love that intro!🔥
I'm on my second build and I turned coaster into a freewheel and added caliper brakes interestingly
It's best to disassemble the rear hub coaster brake assembly and thoroughly clean, inspect, and relube it prior to adjustment. PS: If the bike's not going to be exposed to the kind of off road use that your bikes are, you can simply grind down the dust cover rather than hog out the rear sprocket, a vernier caliper makes it easy to get a perfect fit.
This is what you where talking about in discord lol 😆 I just took the brake arm off and put it back on without checking anything gonna go do this now on my nel lusso thanks for the video brother
Thanks man I didn't know that haven't seen a coaster brake on a bike since I was a little kid and I just got a bike with a coaster brakes drama to put my motor on and I was expecting the problem with it rubbing butt I would have totally screwed it up if I hadn't watched this video so thank you and you explained it very well so once again thank you
This has been updated. Faster and easier th-cam.com/video/_EdJpyIEqK4/w-d-xo.html
I am building a Cranbrook. Thats wild you mentioned it. Thought they were old and rare. I removed the arm completely or else it wouldnt work. The arm is in the way of all the bolts
Arm is essential to anchor hub from spinning on jam nuts. To convert to freewheel check TH-cam
Oh man, I need to try this in the AM. I started a motor install on my bike today but had to backout because I don't have everything I need. Now my rear wheel isn't spinning right anymore and I think this might be my issue. *fingers crossed*
Same here
I actually overtightened my bearings on my nell lusso and just ended up buy a new wheel the other day. I wish I had seen this video before I built my bike.
Please do a tear down video. Like a whole coaster brake hub assembly. You explain things so well but I need to put my whole hub back together
Sorry friend I don't know enough about them to help.
but if you search for "how to rebuild a coaster brake" a bunch of videos pop up :) good luck
That is the coolest wrench I've ever seen
Worst case happened to me. Tire locked up and threw me off. 😩
Yeah…I just rebuilt a rim, and the coaster lever is chewed up bad! If you’re planing on traveling far….get a phat motto back rim’ you will see them on Four stroke motto bikes’ you screw the sprocket to the hub, and you can convert to disk brakes….but you will need to weld a thick bracket to the frame….to hold the caliper.
Or you can put the old clamp brakes on it….WARNING! You’re gonna need to sand the paint off the sides…or you’re brakes will Perform terribly…..the coaster brake will fail eventually’ because the inners aren’t made for high speed stopping….this depends on a persons weight’ if you’re over 200 pounds’ they will wear down quicker….if You’re always flogging the hell out it, and make high speed stops’ they will fail’ a gas cruiser is made for cruising at 25-35mph….they last a lot longer.
You have a link to a faster way to adjust the brake, but I like this one better. The other one doesn't have the brake arm on it.
If you take the axle nuts and double nut against the cone side it has less chance to spin
Man I really like that Crescent wrench / vice grip
I don't get it the piece the brake arm connects to is supposed to spin freely? My arm just connects there and is tight, with the other side all the way loose it will turn but is hard to turn by hand to a certain point then it stops. Everything turns when the wheel turns whole coaster arm also even with the bearings loose.
Please tell me the size of the chain on the engine side.
410 bad, 415 good, 415H great.
@@LAHover Thank you
Dang man so last night I installed the rear sprocket that came with the kit and noticed it became loose after I removed the coaster brake I thought I tightened everything back up and everything seemed fine when I was done and put the tire back on. Anyway today I rode it to my job to pick up my check and I noticed something was all of a sudden wrong when I was riding back and the wheel was super loose and making noise. I realize now that what I did was over tightened everything and the axle wasn't back together properly now I'm about to take it off and see the damage and hope it's not too bad because it was a brand new beach cruiser I bought to install the motor on. 😬
Thank you for all the wonderful content man.
I got my wheel in a good place I think. Except the axle has more threads showing on the bicycle sprocket side. I'm not sure if it was the same when I took the wheels off of the bike I. Bought them from a huffy cruiser at a scrap yard it was the black girls bike with welded rack on the back. Anyhow. My question is this, if I loosen both sides shouldn't I be able to re center the axle to the hub . Also is it vital to the way the parts function that the axle be centered in the hub?
Removing the dust cover is generally perfectly fine. Why? The sprocket itself covers the bearings and acts a s a seal. What I do is clean the bearing up. Then re-pack it using CV joint grease.
So when I installed my motor chain sprocket and retightened back the chain break and put the wheel back on, the wheel became so difficult to spin and I couldn't figure out why the rear wheel could barely spin?
Had to switch my tires because the thread was blowing out. Realized I messed with the coaster break and didn’t want it to be too tight so here I am. Wish me luck
I wish I had seen this before I tore into mine. I had no idea it was any more than removing the wheel and putting it back on. Now my wheel will barely turn.
I ran into this issue with the Kent seachange... blew the bearings
Dude I wish you put out more recent content with jow much parts are going down in price, I got a yd 100 recently for 120$
I picking up, what you're putting down. Good instruction video !
this works betterattach the wheel to the outside of the frame brake arm facing out tighten then break loose
Those damn huffy cranbrooks have so many issues and no matter how many times you fix it, they keep popping up
Mine keeps loosening itself I can get ivti not loosen I tried everything in video .I even hollowed out the sprocket it fires right up I ported it cleaned it check the magneto hollowed out the exhaust a little bit and it's running I started it for the first time but the damn wheel will not stay tight my only thought is to go ahead and just take the coaster brake out
Thank you so much for this! Been stuck on this for days.
Great vid bro tips are sweet 👍👍 thanks boss man
can bolts with smaller heads be bought? for example: ones with rounded heads
Tighten till you feel a slight bit of drag when you spin the wheel, the. Back off a bit, then make sure there is no play in the wheel besring
Ugh my coaster arm won't connect cause the sprocket adapter makes the sprocket sit to high so it can't lock into that weird piece it sits flush against
Dude I'm building a nell lusso now. And am having this issue. The back tire will not turn. Is it just too tight? Or do I need to adjust the caliper on the inside
I have a nel lusso rn and I can’t get the dang coaster break off the darn hub
When i got my first motorized bike I forgot to bolt the brake arm and as soon as i touched the brake it spun around till it popped every ball in the bearings out and locked up
Happend to me before to
What's the harm if you leave the dust cover on and skip the dremeling...Does it encourage the sprocket to slip off center?
A bit more space between sprocket and bearings doesn't sound bad, as long as it remains seated. The load is on the spokes, not the axle.
My coaster brakes are so freaking sensitive. As soon as I push the pedals back the whee locks up. What can I do to fix it???
Maybe you could put a drop of super glue down the threads of the bottom adjustment nut after removing the first nut?
I guess my frames a little bit cockeyed cuz when I put the bevel out The chain rubs on the tire so I put the bevel in and it lines up perfect with the motor it's probably just cuz my frame though I wasn't saying anything bad
Yeah sorry, I thought this comment was on a belt drive video, my bad... But it's different for each bike. I find most of my builds need the sprocket set so that the chain is closer to the tire, but one of my 700c bikes needs the chain line closer to the frame.
Can you provide a link for the drill / sand paper for the sprocket so the dust cover can fit true?
I have watched this video so many times I’ve been doing this for the past 2 hours and it will still not tighten correctly
Pinned comment and video description. A much faster way to do it ;)
I always just hit the sprocket with a quick grinder
I would add that while you have the bearings exposed grease them up! Often times these come with very little grease but either way make sure they're greased properly!
STAY SAFE HOVER FAMILY ,IN OUR PRAYERS
I can’t even get the bolt off to take the coaster arm off. It’s super tight. Need help
6:06 Open up this hole... 7:14 Put it in the vice and bend it...
Think I'll go with non coaster options.
It happened to me on the road and a crashed going about 35
Other places I’ve seen gear wheel it’s placed other way….?
The bevel helps align the chain. Some frames run it in, others run it out.
Is there any mountain bike trails in your area? If so you should definitely try them on the motorized mountain bike.
I have a huffy cranbrook also! I adjust the bearings and it’s perfect but after a ride it loosens up every time and I can’t figure it out
I have recently found that due to the soft metal used on the new (2019-2021) brake arms they do not hold adjustment well and it's best to slightly over tighten them :(
@@LAHover yeah also the cone nut is eating away and rounding out the brake arm
Hay man I’m having problems with coaster break bike for my motorized bike you think you can help me
Sorry I don't know much about the internals of coaster brakes. But if it's something outside of the hub I might be able to help.
Great video thank you
what happens if the wheel locks up entirely
The "Bad Day" meter will depend on how fast you were going during the lock up.
Good video!
You the man!!
got here a bit to late, my wheel self disassembled the other day
Question for you. Ppl say don’t use the nel lusso for a motorized bike because it breaks at the weld. What your opinion on it? I found a nel lusso is the trash and I’ve been doing work on and as of right now I’m using it for a regular bike but I thought it was awesome cus it was a free bike and it would be good for a build. I also have a older cranbrook that I got for really cheap and I was thinking about making that into a a motorized bike instead of the nel lusso. Thanks for the time and be safe!
I have never owned one, but I have heard of issues with the rear triangle breaking at the rack welds.
Hey bud I know this is off subject but I messaged you regarding one of you're older vidios! You attempted to add lights and ran into trouble! Well I found a very small or medium small alternator that I would love to see someone convert onto one of these bikes ! If you Google John Deere alternator you will see the one I'm referring to! If one of these were mounted g believe it would offer up a great amount of power to run lights and charge batteries! Just my thoughts!
Thanks! I'll go have a look :)
Good video
This is another reason why you don't use rags.
Inbody have recommendations on the type of grease for coaster brake hub bearings?
Just use lite bearing grease
My coaster brake has no room on my Cranbrook it's not clearing the nuts on the sprocket
Chances are you need to tighten down the rag joint more. But in this video I explained how to deal with that.
Ok, what's a sprocket and what's a coaster?
sprocket is the peice the makes the chain move, and it moves the tire, the coaster brake is the brake on a beach cruiser..
add some more 3d credits after it sese la hover and showing other peaces of video going back and fourth to the credits this will make it more presentable it look alot better like a tv show or movie . ps just proper constructive criditsesum joke ideas alsome video always looking looking forward to the next one
Thank you
Random question? Can you use front tire as a rear?
yes, but the axel may be shorter and need spacers. I have heard of builders doing it in a pinch.
Welp my wheel must be busted because it won’t spin no matter how loose or tight I have it even when it’s super wobbly the whole wheel will just spin in my hands
Good to know.
or 4th senerio brakes lock up on you and you crash and then need to watch this video on how to fix a very wack and locked up back wheel 😭🤞
Definitely just saved my bike lmao
Wheere can i get a new rim, does a mag fit?
the one im using now. better than stock www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SU7IO08/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
oh out of stock... might fine it elsewhere
@@LAHover So a huffy cranbrook rim is 26x1.25?And if i were to be looking for a mag wheel for the cranbrook i can use bbr tuing ones or a different size mag?
I got a set of rims with 11 guage spokes for $150 from husky bikes. They’re awesome.
Thank You!!!
All due respect
I just removed the brake and all the parts inside and just made it a wheel
When I tried this a while back I could not get the bearings adjusted correctly, be carful.
I put the coaster on the other side 😬
Catastrophic coaster brake system and rim failure for me
Yo

I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU
Coaster brakes are the WORST thing ever invented.....
they really do suck to deal with...
@@LAHover (UPDATE) ......I'm removing my Coaster wheel and switching to a rear mountain bike wheel...wish me luck
