I have torn my ACL late Jan 2019 playing basketball, my doctor suggested not to go for surgery as my knee seemed relatively stable, after 7 months off physiotherapy and exercises I started to play basketball again with a knee brace alone with no competition just some shooting, dribling and small layups...I haven't felt any instability (Thanks god)....I know every case has it's own factors..but my advice is to take a small step at a time during your recovery, increase your range of motion slowly, once you see you are confident with the current activities add a new small challenge...don't rush surgery unless you are a paid athlete :)

9 Months ago on a Football game i had a major knee injury: MCL tear, ACL tear and a small rip in the miniscus. The surgery date was set 2 months forward so my MCL could heal before getting surgery done. 1-2 Weeks before the surgery my therapist was wondering that my knee seems very stable and send me to orthopedist again. He checked my knee and said there was no instability somehow. So we cancled the surgery. Right now i got around 80-90% of my leg strength back and can do sprints and jumps without any pain. Of course im carefull when it comes to stopping motion and landing out of jumps. The therapist called me a miracle :D

I've been living with a complete tear of the acl and meniscus for the last 10 years. Apparently they told me not to operate, because my muscles were strong enough. Sometimes my knee feels weird but it never gives way and I never have any pain. Despite this I am afraid that if I ever gain weight my knee will give way. I jog a lot and do lots of gym work like weight lifting and it has never been a problem at all.

About 20% of people who have "complete" ACL rupture will heal naturally. The odd is likely to be based on the location of tear. It is called type-I tear ( proximal tear ). By the way, even the best MRI today cannot distinguish correctly between type-1 and type-2 tear(upper mid portion tear). So even if the orthopedic surgeon says your tear is mid substance tear and requires a surgery soon, just wait and see first. You can alway proceed with a surgery later if needed. Google this: "Study Identifies Skiers Who Can Be Successfully Treated Without Surgery After an ACL Tear" I personally found out one of my ruptured ACL bundles was "solidly" healed within 8 weeks.

I had acl injury in the left knee 15 years ago from football, I didn't do any surgery and I still can play football, run and swim, BUT it is not healed, I have to be careful not to rotate on it, I have to run forward. it doesn't give away at all because I know how to move correctly. unfortunately I got sprain in the right knee acl last month :( and I won't make any surgery to fix it but I'll make a surgery to fix the medial meniscus. thanks for the video, it is so helpful. by the way I'm 33 years old now.

I just had arthroscopic surgery where they only cleaned up my acl and learned my acl has few fibers remaining. The only reason why I had this checked out was after recovering from a fall 6 months ago, I found I couldn't kneel and sit back. Every now and then my knee would buckle at work. Turns out I had a tear prior to my injury I didn't even know I had. I would like to avoid having another surgery. But have been so freaked out by what family and friends experiences have been with a torn acl I thought surgery was the only option. I really appreciate this video!! I am being referred to another doctor for my options and trying to find out ahead of time the possibilities so I can ask questions during my appointment.

I tore my acl skiing 2/18/22. My surgeon is saying I need to do 3 months of PT before deciding on surgery. He’s saying I may be better off without surgery. My quad and hamstring have atrophier and he says this will not improve after surgery, but rather worsen. He’s also saying the my ROM, strength, etc., may not be better after surgery vs. just doing PT. I’m 58, go for a week long ski trip once a year. Other than that, stay fit with body weight training, walking, swimming, x country skiing in winter. I’m in Germany. Next up is an mri on other knee, which may have a meniscus tear. Doc says repairing that would take precedent over ACL.

I torn my acl and have only a few fibres left on my pcl and have a medial meniscus tear. Not sure when it happened , never heard a pop, never had severe swelling. Last month I felt a good degree of pain after my first marathon and decided to have an mri and that is why I learned of all these injuries! But i can walk, run, jump, my knew does not lock or give way.
I am resting lots and hope to avoid surgery. I want to run many more marathons. I worry about the future implications and cartilage damage. Please tell me a brace will be enough...😥

I tore my ACL, PCL & MCL. MCL/PCL healed on their own. ACL didn't... but apparently it did attach to something internally... i'm back to doing big weights and a lot of mobility work. just feels weird when running. it doesn't give out on me... but i've the sensation i have a ''gap'' in there when i'm running

Hello Dr Geier. This is my full report:
“Unfortunately there is artefact affecting the superior slices of each sequence. There are some intact fibres of the acl, however there is intrasubstance oedema, thickening and some laxity of the tendon suggestive of a high-grade sprain. Linear high T2 signal is noted within the medial meniscal posterior horn but no extension to an articular surface is seen and this is in keeping with my kid degeneration. Intact lateral meniscus. Intact PCL, medial and lateral collateral ligaments and extensor mechanism. No significant effusion. The chondral surfaces of the medial and lateral tibiofemoral compartments and the patellofemoral joint are well preserved. No bone marrow oedema.
Opinion: High grade injury of the ACL. No meniscal tear.
Can you please give me your opinion ? I had the injury in November 2018 while playing football. I had done the physio exercises...should I have the surgery? Can you please tel me more about the risk of osteoarthritis ?
    Many Thanks !!!
    Cristian UK

how does your knee feel now? I completely tore my ACL a little over 3 weeks ago. All other structures in the knee are fine. All orthopedic doctors I talked to recommend surgery (shocker 😅), but I'm hearing alot of people tell me that I probably don't need it. I'm moderately active (easy cardio, some weight training, hiking, etc...). No high-intensity competitive sports. I'm a professional musician so occasionally need to carry gear up/ down stairs. I'd be curious to hear your perspective. btw, I'm 40 years old. Already back to performing and walking fine (mostly with brace)

I got my leg crushed under a dogpile of people at the Naha tug of War in Japan (50,000 man tug of war) when the rope gave way and we all toppled over. I couldn't walk at first and there was a lot of pain. Month later I didn't need crutches and some physical therapy was done (suspected knee sprain). 5 Months later I go and get an MRI anyway because my leg felt unstable running and jumping (active excercise daily). Turns out I had been performing with a completely severed ACL and a stretched and scarred MCL. I have Ehler's Danlos in my tendons (stretchy tendons and ligaments) so they denied me surgery, but honestly I'm doing fine. I'm a month into Bachata classes and other latin dance styles and I do just fine, other than my knee hurts sometimes and I take more frequent breaks than others. I'm not even mad about it, I just laugh it off now. I wear my leg brace for running and (light) activities involving shallow jumps and weight lifting isn't a problem, although leg day is a bit more tailored (no strength training and barbell squats are light weight with security bars). Still don't generate as much power in my left leg, but I plan to hit the gym harder in that area to overcompensate for lack of ACL. I hope other people know that they can recover from a completely torn ACL and live a relatively normal life. I don't even think about my lack of ACL anymore unless someone brings it up or a group activity involves something that my brain automatically recognizes as danger to my knee.

I torn my first ACL when I was 18 years old and I torn my second ACL when I was 43 years old. I don't have an ACL in both of my knees. As a result I am very careful what I do and don't do. I do not run or jog. I mostly sit, stand, or lay down. Bending down is very difficult because my muscles around my knees are very weak because I don't exercise at all. Tearing my ACLs has changed the quality and the way that I live my life. I am much more limited and sad as a result. I can no longer do what I used to when I was very young.

Hello, MRI said partial tear, surgeon said full tear. He didn't recommend surgery because I'm over 35 and only do sports like swimming, running and biking, he said to do 3 months of physio then a check back in again with him. This injury was 3 weeks ago and I still cannot kneel, crouch, fully extend or do many things, the swelling is still huge...is this normal? I've just started the physio today and the guy said I had very good motion for a recent injury. I can walk but not really at ease as my knee feels heavy...anyway just wnated to know if the swelling and heaviness was normal. Thanks for your videos!

I can walk and bend my knee.
      But can’t twist it inward.
If i delay surgery, will it make problem more worse ?
Doctor was saying that it can turn into arthritis, is it correct ?

I am 28 and had a ACL surgery couple of years ago. I did not do the exercises as I also going through a infection after the ACL reconstruction surgery. Hence my thigh muscle was weak the entire time but it did cause me any harm as I do a limited activity with my legs.
Couple of weeks ago, I fell off the stairs due to imbalance that lead to the same ACL tear again. Now I have a leg that is weak from the previous surgery and torn ACL inside the knee.
Should I do the surgery again or take therapy to recover?

I had an ACL surgery on 9th September 2019. A month later, my knee was infected and they had to remove the graft and the screws. now I don't have a ligament at all. what would you suggest me so that I could have a stable knee hereafter? Can I jog and run again?

    • @jacobsmith8009
      @jacobsmith8009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Sai Amogh i'm assuming you had a cadaver (which is a dead person's ligament) because your knee got infected, sooo.. i would ask your doctor about having a hamstring graft.Thats what i did because
i tore my acl mcl and meniscus on september 12 ,2018 and about a week ago i was cleared to okay sports as long as i wore a brace and it wasn't a quick process but in the long run it was 100% the better option

    • @jacobsmith8009
      @jacobsmith8009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Sai Amogh and i was also wondering.. did they give you any anti rejection medicine, if not that's probably why ur knee got so infected and they could be in a lot of trouble for that

Hello, I’m 35 years old and I tore my ACL 1 month ago at work. I will be starting PT soon before making a decision if I want surgery. I have a toddler and my wife is pregnant with a second child. I don’t really play sports on the daily, but would like to be there for my son and play sports as he gets older. Should I just go for surgery since I am still young? Even if pt strengths my knee I still fear I can hurt my other ligaments or meniscus in the future. What’s the down side of surgery besides the recovery period? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi (I just had surgery 7 days ago)
I hope your healing is going well.I am not telling you what to do I am just here to share my experience. I fully torn my ACL 16month ago (at the age of 35) along with various meniscus damage. Went to Hospital emergency hours after the accident to be looked at. Xray showed no broken bones and got sent home with a leaflet what to do to recover. They told me in the hospital nothing serious I`ll be fine just rest ,ice, elevate and do small exercises. After 4 weeks of struggle found a physiotherapist who helped and I started to improve slowly. (my lower leg pulling down by the force of the gravity on the joint was extremely painful, weight bearing was impossible first 2-3 weeks!!!) it took 3 month to get to walking okay but active full range of motion was achieved around 5-6 month mark. (I never felt so much pain in my life before even I had plenty to experience due to my love to extreme sports, and gymnastics.)
I work as a builder/carpenter since I left school. I am a well built but light weight bloke (70kg). My balance was exceptionally good but regardless how much I was pushing to get back to normal it never happened. Work got limited due to this and I was just doing minimal things in life and that`s it. (go to work after go home, and being with my children also took a significant turn because I could not chase them around the house and could not lift them up or play with them any type of game that involved with running, jumping etc.)
So after fighting for a MRI scan from the hospital through my GP the results were bad I we suspected and they put me on the waiting list. I waited and here I am today 7 days after surgery.
I had the Bone-Patella-Tendon-Bone graft ACL reconstruction along with various meniscus repairs too. I don`t know what the future holds but I am pushing hard and doing everything I can to improve.
About the pain: This is painful yes!! BUT NOT AS PAINFUL AS THE ACCIDENT AND THE WEEKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT!!!
accident pain level 9-9.5 out of 10. Surgery pain is different pain first of all and 7.5-8.5 out of 10.
I had a straight brace on my leg for 48 hrs after the operation. effectively I started exercises 5 days ago. Slow progress... BUT still progress. And NO!!! its not just sitting around... it is hard and painful work. Unfortunately sleeping is hard due to pain too.
But every day is a new day and now all I am aiming is to get the best result out of this now. So stretching, exercising , icing, elevating and all of the other necessary doings I must do.
Hope this little story of mine helps you to make the right choice for you in life.
      Good luck on your journey
