    I had an ACL injury playing rugby. Got tackled and the opponent stepped on my knee in the ruck. Strained my MCL, torn meniscus and grade 1 ACL tear. They aspirated my knee, twice. Did prolotherapy PRP on it and thankfully it's healing and responding well to therapy. I'm 5 weeks post injury now, still have a few more sessions to go but I've gained back a lot of my balance, strength and stability with the help of physio. Never skip physio! I have no problems squatting, going up or down stairs, no problems shifting, changing directions or twisting though i still avoid impact and reduce any twisting movements while healing. I don't wear a knee guard, either kinesio or rigid strapping only as i find that guards weaken my legs and slows down the healing. I do acupuncture and cupping as well for circulation and to control the swelling. I have no pain at all, just tightness from the swelling from time to time (especially when i overuse it like when i went to the beach) is the biggest cause of discomfort for me. I do yoga every morning even though i hate yoga. I cycle a lot too aside from physio. It's not fully healed but I'm optimistic, so far i have been rather responsive to the treatments. I hope that helps someone. I understand how devastating this injury is especially to ppl like me who built a life around sports. I talked to every Dr i could find until i found a course of treatment that was right for me. If this doesn't work, come to Malaysia. We have an excellent sports science hospital that does stem cell recon!

    I live in uk and yesterday when I turned it was like an electric band being snapped on the side of my knee. The pain was excruciating and I couldn’t bare my weight on it. Went to a&e and after X-ray they were unsure if it was an avulsion fracture or Pellegrini stieda. Will this heal natural. I’m having to use crutches to walk and taking anti inflammatories.

    I am very confused. I play baseball yesterday we was throwing the baseball getting some reps in and I was running to the ball and when I ran to it and caught it, it felt as my knee went somewhat forward. The pain didn’t hit right away it hit around 5 seconds after it happened but I knew something wasn’t right. Well eventually when I felt the pain I went to the ground, and it didn’t really hurt at all just simply felt like a little cramp. I’ve been walking on it all day today it only gave out around 2 times today. I’ve been limping all day as well, i’m not sure what’s going on. I want to know what could possibly be going on before I go get it checked out. Thank you.

Oh well Im I'm not sure, do you think its only hurting because of my other knee is injured and it will go away after surgery? or I don't know.

      Honestly it depends on the type of meniscus tear. Some meniscus tears require crutches for 1-2 weeks and some 6 weeks. Crutches after an augmentation for a partial ACL tear are usually necessary for up to two weeks.

    God bless you. I understand this is not individual advice and not written in stone as law.... but your opinions and experiences are way better than what I see in a google search. My daughters MRI report says "the acl is deficient most compatible with a chronic tear" and I do not understand what that language means. Can that mean she has a slight tear or an old tear? She walks fine and the immedicenter tested her knee and said "that's a good knee". If she had no acl at all wouldn't she be swollen and not walking or having her knee give out?

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not some people are walking around with chronic ACL tears. They are referring to an old tear. No, I would not expect a knee that is doing well to be swollen. Only a certain percentage of knees without an ACL will be unstable and make her knee give way. Other knees seem to tolerate it well. The issue you and your daughter need to discuss is sports participation. Class I sports, with cutting, pivoting, rapid changes in direction would put her at risk for giving way. Each giving way episode increases risk of meniscus or cartilage injury.

    • @chrisbiker4702
      @chrisbiker4702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowardLuksMD Thank you for answering. This answer was a bit late but still appreciated. She had the surgery because there was a bucket handle tear. They did the acl while they were there. Used a hamstring graft. They say the acl at the same time makes better outcome because blood in the area is increased. Also new acl will prevent risking another meniscus tear. God bless you and thanks for responding.

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisbiker4702 Glad everything went well. Your surgeon is correct, the chance of healing a meniscus tear increases when ACL surgery is performed at the same time.

    I think I might have a partial tear or a stretch from a repetitive strain situation. My knee is stable. It has never given way but it feels like it could, like it’s not entirely stable. My knee is still swollen and sore after 5 weeks of doing at home massage, foam rolling and knee strengthening exercises. It’s getting frustrating. I want to go for an MRI but I’m afraid of COVID. Hello, On your website you state that a grade 3 MCL tear can take 3-5 months to recover. Just wondering why almost everywhere else you look they say 6-8 weeks. @@thebankyard6283 Hi! No surgery, they don't do it for mcl tears where I live and literature also supports this... However...
      It depends what you mean by recovered completely. I did all the rehab but to this day I still feel some tightness there. It's completely fine for running, swimming etc.. But for martial arts, I still feel I have to protect the area and does become sore sometimes. For climbing it's ok too.
      Have you just done this injury?
      I've actually begun doing a program to bulletproof your knees (supposedly) so we'll see if I can make it as strong as it once was.

Doctor has called next week to see if the knee ligaments hav healed so that exercises n physiotherapy could begin. Umm though the swelling has reduced a bit as compared to a month ago. Still it hasn’t gone. I cannot bend my knee much, just a little bit. I wear a long knee brace. Very depressed n sad :/

      @@thebankyard6283 ouch, that sounds painful. But if you look on the bright side at least you don't have a full acl tear which would definitely require surgery.
      I'm no doctor but I have the impression that surgery should be a last resort. With correct physio you can usually resolve the problem even if it takes time.
      The beginning really sucks but once you start rehabilitating it, you'll start to feel much better. Plus you can still do plenty of upper body exercises, even now.
      I used to go (be driven) to the gym even though I couldn't walk, it certainly made me feel better mentally. Be patient with it, healing is a slow process.

      @Ali Ammar I was still facing the same prblm in long term also but I did not go for surgery yet because normal day activity is ok for me , and I am reviewing to go for stem cell surgery , that is totally different from normal surgery they don't insert rods like normal surgery instead they inject very small injectinon to treat the acl , and I am not sure from which country ur but in india regenenexx ortho sport does this kind of procedures , just google it out for ur country for stem cell acl repair , and they give gurantee that partial acl tears can be treated with the procedure but keep in mind it cost more than normal surgey , hope this help u out

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really relevant wrt partial tears. We are just starting to study it against a standard technique so it will take years until we can answer that question. Sadly the results of an ACL repair are showing a very high reinjury rate vs standard ACL reconstructive surgery.

    How long does a partial torn acl usually take to heal?

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on your definition of healing. To us as Orthopedic Surgeons, a healed partial tear is a tear that allows you to a have a stable knee without the need for surgery. many patients with partial ACL tears have a stable knee and do not need surgery. Some patients with partial tears have an unstable knee and require surgery to attempt to restore stability. It usually takes a few months of PT to restore motion and strength after the injury.

    I had partial ACL tear as per MRI and used long knee brace as per Dr's guide, took bed rest for around 1 month, though 4-5 days interrupted for walking. On that days, knee become little swollen. Then again took rest and seems ok. So, now my leg has become straight and can't bend. Now I am doing quadriceps by sitting (squeezing) and hamstring exercise either sitting or lying and leg ups and down. 10-15 Rep for 2 times a day. I dont use brace now and walk 20-30 ft max in a day. Am I doing rightly to come back in normal life? Do i need physiotherapy? How many days will it take to get full knee bending? Do I walk using scratch? I am not feeling any pain inside knee. Please suggest.
