Kawasaki Jet Ski sheared off the woodruff key...why?

It started out as simple starter bendix replacement, but after the repair the engine sounded terrible. It was spitting fuel out of the carbs so what happened? I did not torque the crank shaft flywheel bolt to spec and so it sheared off the key as soon as it started up.
