I think what really makes this movie is the family dynamic and the great writing. The family feel so real and relatable so you really care about them i feel like a lot of horror movies fail to accomplish this.

yeah.... after a certain point, it seems that horror movie writers just accepted that horror movie characters need to be complete idiots for a plot to happen.... loved horror movies, but too much dumb writing ruined it for me

The Star Spangled Banner was played by many TV stations when they "signed off" each night. TV stations had to officially sign on and sign off the airwaves every day. This is what you see in the opening shot.
I’m old enough to remember this. When the anthem came on, you had to go to bed.
This was why when some local networks decided to continue broadcasting till 4am on Fri/Sat it opened up more options for those working 2nd shift. It was just a matter of time till cable appeared.

House 2 the second story
One of the things that I loved about this movie was how much the family loved each other. Trauma and tragedy can sometimes tear a family apart, but this family was determined that they were going to get through this together.
There is a part 2. It’s really good. Answers slot of the “why?” Questions. And one of the creepiest villains I’ve seen in the last 50 years
Part 3 is still watchable. At least it had also Heather O'Rourke in it, who sadly passed away due to her illness.
The whole trilogy features actors who died too soon after the movies.

My parents thought this was a kids movie.. 10 year old me was scared of trees for years.. lol
Same. Also same regarding trees. Additionally, it was many years before I was okay sleeping in a bed pushed up to a wall on one side (because of that scene with the "mouth" portal in the wall). I would sleep all the way over on the mattress' edge farthest from the wall (inconvenient since this was the way my grandparents' guest room was set up).
But this totally WAS a family adventure movie! I watched it at 6 or 7 and the only scene my mom told me to look away was the face melting in the mirror 😅

What a perfect reaction. This is one of my old favorites and it is such a pleasure to watch a new generation reacting to these great old movies. To this day, the sound editing of the girl's voice projecting from the other side still gives me chills. Thank you!

I know y’all are way too young to know this, so as an 80s kid let me explain. It used to be common for over-the-air TV channels to sign off late at night, and they would usually do so with the US anthem. As kids back then we knew we’d stayed up way past our bedtimes if we heard the Star Spangled Banner playing.
Cable TV became more prominent by the mid 80s and things transitioned more toward the 24 hour broadcast schedule.
My favorite scenes in this are Carol Ann waking up covered goo in her mums arms in the bathtub, just the she said "Hi daddy!" just melted my heart. My other favorite scene is the giant ghoul skeleton and the massive ghoul head near the end.
I was about Carol Anne's age when this came out and it was rated PG (PG 13 didn't exist yet). I remember watching this when it came out on HBO or something and that clown doll is still the most terrifying part for me. To this day I still hate clowns and those kinds of dolls
Yup. Even my dad freaked out over that clown. He was a tough dude but that clown really got to him. LOL. I was just a kid and we were watching it on TV in the safety of our own living room, but I still vividly remember that moment.
This is the best haunted house movie of all time in my opinion and the mother was a real hero. When she screams "don't hurt my babies" as she runs up the stairs still gives me chills.
This has one of the best family dynamics ive ever seen on film. All their interactions are very natural and healthy
As a kid my parents would drag me to the movies more often than not, as I don't think I ever asked to go, at least not for the movies they ever picked, but I saw some amazing movies(Raiders, Grease, The Wiz). Poltergeist was one of them, and to this day I still have found memories of seeing this as a kid, as this was about the level of scary I could take at that age. LOL

Can you believe they used real human remains for corpses that rose out of the ground in this movie? Especially the scene with the mom in the pool near the end of the movie. Thats nuts!
They got skeletons from a medical supply store, the same ones that you saw in Dr's offices and hospitals, etc.
They didn't do plastic back then, so not as sinister as you make it sound.

_Poltergeist_ is one of my favourite films. Technically directed by Tobe Hooper, there's been years of speculation Spielberg did most of the actual directing.
Are you ladies aware sadly, both daughter actors in this film later died?
After the sequel, Heather O'Rourke (Carole Anne) died during a botched appendectomy; Dominque Dunne (older daughter Dana) was strangled in her driveway by her boyfriend.
The skeletons in the pool were _real actual _*_dead human bodies,_* not props. The production decided it was less expensive to use actual bodies than prop bodies. JoBeth Williams wasn't told this nightmare fuel until well after wrapping...
They were skeletons acquired from medical supply companies, from people who had willingly donated their bodies. It's not like they dug up an actual graveyard and took corpses out of the ground or anything.
Wasn’t a “botched appendectomy”, was septic shock after surgery to repair a bowel obstruction… she was only 12….

GREAT CHOICE girls!!! Saw this OPENING NIGHT in June of 1982. Scared the living SHIT out of everyone! Spielberg was never a greater Film God than the summer of 82. E.T. came out just a month earlier and only a year after Raiders of the Lost Ark. Great time to be a teenager!! Also? The unsung HERO of this film is the GREAT score by Jerry Goldsmith .. R.I.P.

A similar thing happened to me. I had nightmares about clowns scaling down the walls to come after me😮
I was seven years old when I first watched Poltergeist. I've been traumatized ever since. Fantastic film.
Fun Fact: Poltergeist was written and produced by Steven Spielberg. Due to contractual obligations he couldn't direct it as E.T was also being made at the time. But he was always on the set and had a lot of creative control over its making that it is widely assumed that he directed the film or at least co directed it.

I was seven years old when I saw Poltergeist. It traumatized me for life. I can't even think of this movie without having PTSD. That's why it is my absolute favorite horror film of all time. Stephen Spielberg is a genius.
2:02 That flashing was in every household back in those days if you left your TV on over night. Stations went off the air (stopped broadcasting) usually at Midnight.

I saw this in the theater at 12 with a friend, our parents took us. I’m still scared to this day from that experience, even just hearing the name of the movies creeps me out.
That being said, it is a classic in the genre, though personally I prefer The Thing from that generation. My dad had a super early VCR in the early 80’s, he’d take it to other people’s houses for us to watch movies. It weighed as much as a small car but boy was it neat being able to watch at home, saw The Thing first time with that same friend, that time in his basement on tv.
Fun Facts:
1. Spielberg wrote this film and it was filmed at the same time as E.T. This house was right down the street from the E.T. house so Spielberg had an easy commute to and from sets.
2. There were mad curses involved with the cast and crew during and after filming.
3. The face tearaway scene -- those were Spielberg's hands tearing away the flesh from the actor.
4. THOSE WERE REAL BONES FROM REAL HUMAN BODIES IN THE POOL SCENE!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!! ☠ 💀 🦴

Saw this on HBO when I was a kid……scared the crap out of me. Loved this movie, such a classic.
The skeletons used in the swimming pool were real, and no one, not even the actors knew they were real, which is one of the reasons why the film is cursed.
There is no such thing as a curse, and how precisely did they get the skeletons, which were procured from medical suppliers, without "anyone" knowing? Who purchased them? Who picked them up/received the delivery? Craig T. Nelson is on tape talking about how he was told they were real.
My old seventh grade science classroom had a real skeleton in it...was that class cursed, too? Seriously, stop making things up.

This has to be one of the absolute best reactions to this movie. Because this movie is so much about motherhood and female energy (the husband is completely useless, despite his bravado he makes mistake after mistake, he can't even get the car keys in the ignition) I think a movie like this, or Rosemary's Baby, or Carrie, or Gaslight, (or The Shining!),these are all movies that gain something when a female reacts to it. (I feel the same way about male reactors and some war movies and other testosterone heavy flicks). I hope you hit "Rosemary's Baby" and "Carrie", you guys would do fantastic on those two films!!! PS: None of the Jaws sequels are Spielberg but he did do the Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park series.
I'm so glad you and Steph watched this together. Seeing you two scared gives me life! I saw this movie for the first time when I was a kid and it scared the shit out of me to the point where it stuck with me for nearly a year. I think one of the scariest things about it is that it doesn't look like a typical haunted house. It's modern, it's cozy, and it's in a nice neighborhood, which makes it that much more jarring when shit hits the fan. The visual effects still hold up today too. I know this video is supposed to be a cut down version, but I kind of wish you'd shown the parts where the older daughter tells off those construction guys who are cat-calling her by just using hand gestures and the parents smoking weed. I'd love to know how you both reacted to those scenes lol. I hope you two watch the sequels at some point. They're not as well liked as this one, but they're quite good as far as I'm concerned. Might as well complete the trilogy.
20:35 - That slimey, gooey stuff is called "ectoplasm", which is supposed to be a physical residue left behind when an apparition/entity from another dimension/realm makes contact with our physical reality.
the second one is really good, too, in my opinion. It is different enough to keep you interested, but plays with the same characters and themes, and expanding from the first, so you get the feeling of a continuation from the first one.

This movie's still holds up except most people don't see snow on their TV anymore & of course we have 24/7 cable or streaming when back-in-the-day TV used to turn off & give you a service announcements or play the national anthem
There is a Poltergeist II and Poltergeist III. Both worth a watch in my opinion.

Sure is fun watching two young ladies watch a horror classic. From the genuine skeletons in the pool to the late, great James Karen, this one will never rust. It was sort of funny to see two people who were unfamiliar with the "They're here..." line. That's, like, right behind "You're gonna need a bigger boat" for epic movie lines. Great stuff, ladies!
The movie called "The Entity" is a good one as well. Also, it is supposed to be made from a true story.

I think all the characters are great and you really care about the family. I even really like the lady who was the paranormal investigator, her trembling so much she could barely drink her tea but she was so supportive to the Mom and really wanted to help the family.

Yes they made 2 more sequels ! The second movie was good , not too good on the 3rd . The only reason to watch the 3rd movie was because it was Heather O’ Rourke’s last movie ! She passed away before it’s release .

My little 4 yr old brother broke out in hives when my dad dragged us to the theater. I always remember the meat on the counter scene for some reason. I love this movie til this day!
One of the weirdest things about Poltergeist is it's directed by Tobe Hooper (Spielberg was involved too) who did the earthy/freaky/disturbing original Texas Chainsaw Massacre!
I'm 48 and this film was one of THE big ones from my childhood. An amazing time. Everyone was getting their first video recorders (usually VHS) so suddenly we'd all be watching all these films over and over again. Some people would get their hands on 'video nasties'. Many would watch loads of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas films. Almost everyone was watching Michael Jackson's Thriller or stuff like Police Academy. You'd catch odd comedy horror films like House or Troll.
After watching Poltergeist, I'd lose sleep as a little kid because it felt like I could see my Popeye wallpaper moving a bit on the walls amid the dark of my bedroom. I'd ask mum and dad to leave my door ajar and the landing light on outside it. Great days! Michael Jackson's Thriller or stuff like Police Academy. You'd catch odd comedy horror films like House or Troll. Awesome times!
This movie holds a special place in my heart. It sounds weird but this movie seems very realistic. The family seems real. And I appreciate the way they portrayed marijuana that you could still have a very good life successful beautiful family and smoke a little weed every once in a while, very realistic. Again, strange to say but the whole thing just seemed real. Thanks for the entertainment. Love your reactions.
Hey y'all, sequels aren't always the idea of the filmmakers/directors. In most cases, the studios own the rights to the movie, and like everyone else, the directors are simply an employee of the studio. So most times, sequels are the idea of the studios who are capitalizing on the success of the original films. That's why you often see many times that the sequels are directed by different people. Even though directors of the original films hadn't planned on any sequels to their films, they'll still be on board in some capacity as producers, or executive producers, and/or writers, likely because they don't want to see their "baby" bastardized by the next gen' director; so they'll try and make sure they have a hand in it. The only time you will see a director of an original film directing consequent sequels is if they had planned on making their movie a franchise from the get-jump. For example, like James Cameron with the Avatar films.

5:25 -- Yes! Younger viewers often fail to realize that clowns were generally NOT terrifying to 95% of all humans, for a long time. They were HAPPY faces/figures, for DECADES. As it happens, right around the time of the 80s, when horror was coming into a new age, clowns became a common trope, but this movie was kinda before all of that, so it wasn't SO obvious at the outset that this doll was going to wreak havoc on the kids. If you want to see another scary doll, check out Magic starring Anthony Hopkins. Scared the SHIT out of a lot of us back in the day.
This movie was damn terrifying in the movie theater all those years ago.
The Changeling (early 80s) is another, creepy classic that few ever review. Would recommend it as a slow burn creepy experience with a haunted house :)
This movie scarred me for years. My uncle took us to see it at the drive-in. I was between Carol Anne and Bobby's age when I saw it. I love it now for the nostalgia.

Poltergeist 2 is absolutely a great follow-up. It stays true to the original movie's themes and also explores some new territory as well. Brings back the core of the original cast and introduces a couple very interesting new characters. The later sequels fall off hard, but P2 delivers supernatural creepiness almost as well as the 1st film.
It's so funny when people keep thinking Carol Ann was in the TV. She was actually in a ghost dimension, but the TV allowed them to hear her because it was on a similar frequency, so you could hear her calling through the TV speaker. She was never actually in the TV.
I loved the 2nd and 3rd one - they're supposed to be weird and crazy movies - they're about supernatural fiction not penguin documentaries ; )

A fantastic sequel.
Spielberg shot this movie and 'ET' more or less at the same time (1981/82) , working at 2 different locations in California close to each other. In fact there was a black & white photo taken with the main cast from both movies with Spielberg sitting in the middle holding Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) at one hand and Gertie (Drew Barrymore) at the other - they were both similar age then. In the background, there were the 2 ET brothers (Elliott & Keys) and Freeling brother & sister (Dana & Robbie). However life had turned out to be very different for the cast from both movies. Dana (Dominique Dunne) was offered a supporting role in one of the long running 1980s sci-fi TV series 'V' after her appearance in this movie but she was murdered by her ex boyfriend in the same year (1982) before the shooting for the new series started in 1983. Her role in 'V' went to another actress called Blair Tefkin. Spielberg turned down the offer to make the sequel 'Poltergeist 2' which went to a different director. The creepy priest and the Indian magic man in 'Poltergeist 2' both died after the movie was completed. O'Rourke then got ill when she was shooting 'Poltergeist 3. It turned out that she was misdiagnosed and was given the wrong treatment which made her illness worst. She died unexpectedly at the age of 12 before the movie was released. Apparently, it all happened suddenly as she fell unwell the night before but was able to get up the next day to go to school. She got really ill over breakfast & emergency was called to take her to the hospital and the poor girl was no more before noon. Very sad. As for Barrymore, she goes on to become an A listed star, a movie writer and a producer.

Fun fact, the skeletons in the pool scene were actually real, at the time of production, it was easier to buy real skeletons than to have then constructed. she swam in skeleton soup...lol ❤❤☮☮✌✌

Horror Nights DID do a Poltergeist-themed house. Though this film wasn't directed by Spielberg, the only sequels he's helmed are: the second Jurassic Park movie and the second/third/fourth Indiana Jones movies.
RIP to the little girl actress. Also the actress who played the older teenage daughter also died (murder....but don't quote me on that part).

I enjoyed Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986). All the OG cast return, except for Dominique Dunne (Dana) who was murdered shortly after Poltergeist 1 came out. Poltergeist 3 (1988) only has Heather O'Rourke (Carol Anne) as the original family member but it's still an enjoyable watch IMHO. Sadly however IRL, Heather died aged 13 half way through filming no. 3 so they had to use a body double. Zelda Rubinstein (Tangina) is in all three movies.
As a kid I saw Poltergeist at the drive-in. Talk about a horror classic! Thus yrs later me & my siblings went to see Poltergeist 2 at theatre. Indelible 80's memories. 😂

Poltergeist 2 is pretty good, not as good as this one, but worthy of a reaction! PLEASE watch it too. It explains more of what is going on. I LOVE this move, because of GREAT characters, there is just the right amount of well placed comedy, scares, even a great family & a sweet love story! A PERFECT blend of all of those elements! THIS movie is the one that started the freaky, scary clown as a thing! Zelda Rubinstein as Tangina Barrons ("this house is clean" lady) RULES!!

Poltergeist is the best film, but Poltergeist 2 definitely has the creepiest villain. Horror films have never bothered me, but the preacher gave me chills the first time I saw P2
