It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff films, 2 crossover films, video games, comics, novels, toys, board games, novelizations, and an upcoming live action TV series, it's now considered to be one of the scariest motion pictures ever made.
Bilbo Space Baggins is a psychopathic/emotionless synthetic in this universe... and the fact that the cast didn't know about the chestbursting scene beforehand captured everyone's horrified reactions

It was in the script that they had all read before starting the film.
What surprised them was the sudden violent explosion of fake blood that burst from the table and the exact physical appearance of the chestburster, that's where those deer in the headlights looks came from.
It's one thing to know something is going to happen, it's another seeing it in gory detail 😅
And then Weaver was NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR for the sequel which is UNHEARD OF like the Academy NEVER gives these movies the time of day. Incredible.
@@mnomadvfx Wrong. “Everyone was wearing raincoats - we should have been a little suspicious,” Weaver told Empire. “By the time they take us down to the set, the entire thing is shrouded in plastic, they have huge big buckets of offal sitting around, the place smells like formaldehyde like you wouldn’t believe it,” Cartwright said in the 2003 DVD featurette The Eighth Passenger: Creature Design. “We were all wondering what the hell was going on,” Yaphet Kotto, who played Parker, told Empire. “Why is the crew looking at us the way they’re looking at us right now? Why are they wearing plastic shields?”
“It was a much publicized fact that the cast didn’t know what was going to happen,” Hurt noted in The Eighth Passenger. “Well, of course they knew what was going to happen; they knew that the alien was going to arrive that way. What they didn’t know is that it was going to be capped with little explosives, and that when it actually burst through there would be quite a shattering explosion and that they’d all get splattered with blood and stuff.”
Four cameras were running to capture the scene from every angle. There were a few false starts when the creature couldn’t break through because the T-shirt wouldn’t rip. (“There was quite a long time as one prop man underneath the table kept pushing this alien on a stick saying, ‘Is it coming through yet…. Can you see it? Is it coming through?’ Hurt joked in the featurette.)
Then all of a sudden, it worked - a little too well. As the creature burst out of Kane’s chest, jets of blood squirted everywhere, startling the actors. They had instinctively leaned over Hurt’s body as they tried to help his character, and now they jumped back, dodging the blood. Cartwright got the worst of it, and her genuine shock ended up in the movie. “They told me I’d get a little blood on my face. And they had an entire jet pointed at me,” she said on the Alien audio commentary. When she was hit in the face, she lunged backwards, tripped over a banquette and flipped onto the floor (which no doubt led to the urban legend that Cartwright fainted).
I love the sequel, “Aliens”, but “Alien” is the perfect organism.
Indeed. I used to go back and forth between which I preferred, but I think these days Alien has a solid place at my #1 spot. Honestly they're just too different to directly compare though.
"Aliens" is what established the franchise's subsequent action-horror tone, and it's a fine film. But "Alien" is still among the greatest intimate, claustrophobic horror films ever made, and that stuff is my jam.
The fact Jaby said Aliens is superior is filling me with pure anger.
They're both excellent, in different ways.

This is why Ellen Ripley has reached legendary status as a character, you can see she has real fear but she is a survivor, able to make the tough decisions in an overwhelming situation. She is easily my favorite movie character, shes not some stoic unkillable hero with an ego but a character that is very human.
No not this movie, the sequel.
Now, now. Please remember. According to the mass media, there were no strong female characters in film until about 3 or 4 years ago.
@@Lpace3 Sad thing is...Ripley from Aliens is still one of the best like top 3 (for most people) and that movie is mega old. Even with being woke the movies just aren't that good these days.

So a bit of clarification that may help, the crew of the Nostromo aren't astronauts or scientists as we would know them. They are basically space tow-truckers that were contractually obligated to investigate anything the company found interesting. You are correct in your assumption that the company put Ash there as the science officer to make sure the alien was brought back for study.
Also, this movie was written with no gender or race in mind for any of the characters. All characters were just listed by last name so that they could cast the best person in each role regardless of any other factors. Most people originally assumed Ripley would be a man. Sigourney knocked it out of the park and is one of the best examples of a strong female lead ever in my opinion.
I think the best way to describe them is that they are part of the merchant navy like cargo crews who carry millions of tons of different products on the seas each years.
And that is what made the movie (movies back then especially) so good. The people were characters first and foremost. No forced diversity, no “strong independent women”, just good characters. Miss those days before wokeness set in…
At 20:46 when you asked why didn't they "scan him before you broke bread again?" ACTUALLY. If you go back to that scene where Ripley questions Ash about breaking quarantine and looks into his microscope, notice how he turned off all his little monitors and stretched like he was sleepy? There was an embryo on the monitors! (It was an actual chicken embryo because they look rather alien-ish!) Ash knew about the embryo implant all along! He wasn't surprised when it birthed! He was excited, not scared! lol
One of the reasons why this movie holds up well today is because each character was written based on their role in the initial script, "Pilot," "Captain," "Science Officer," etc. They didn't even know if they would be casting men or women at first and didn't let that form a bias in how they portrayed the characters.

But then aliens was written by James Cameron with the assistance of Sigourney Weaver to be just as awesome. Modern screenwriters need to take notes on these movies for writing female characters.
This movie is a masterpiece. The set design and sound design created the perfect creepy environment and really heightened the edge-of-your-seat tension. And even now over 40 years later it still feels like futuristic sci-fi. I loved your reactions and I'm really looking forward to seeing you react to Aliens!
The reason the set design is so good is because they made a full scale replica of the inteior in whichnto film to give it that closterphobic feel, unlike modern films wherenthey just build 3 walls and film from outside

I'm old, but I had to get my mother to take me to a showing when it came out. The suspense was UNREAL in a theater.
classic movie, the scene where the Chestbuster comes out, none of the actors except John hurt, know fully what is happening, the script they got just said the alien emerges or something. None of them where expecting to get squirted with blood or how detailed it would be, so the reactions are pretty genuine.
It was originally meant to go straight through the shirt on the first blood spurt and when they all froze in confusion Ridley Scott was off camera telling them to keep going

Well, they generally knew. Sigourney Weaver and Veronica Cartwright had seen the chest burster puppet. The SFX guys had been showing it off proudly.
They also knew what was going to happen. The scene up until the point where Kane is on the table ready for the Alien to burst out was filmed. Then they broke for lunch while they the SFX guys set up the rest of the scene.
What they didn't expect was there to be so much blood. Veronica Cartwright gets hit right in the face with a stream of blood and slips.
They actually went a local abattoir on the same day and got a whole load of real blood to spray out where. Along with lots of offal and other pieces of raw meat.
So it was as much the smell, noise, and shock of the blood that they were reacting to. They knew what was going to happen, but they weren't prepared for how visceral it ended up being.
Ripley tried to stop the self-destruct sequence not to find Jones but because the Alien had gotten between her and the shuttle, but it was too late for that. That's when the Alien hid himself in the shuttle. Ripley was forced to run to the shuttle regardless of the obvious danger, and she initially thought she had gotten lucky that the Alien decided to go elsewhere (but obviously he didn't--surprise!).
If they haven’t seen it yet I’d love to see them watch The Thing (1982 of course)
“Take a sample, you guys are scientists, right,” Achara Kirk.
Actually, no, they’re not scientists, but so many people make that mistake because it’s so rare to follow people in space stories who are just working class and not military personnel or scientists, (maybe Dead Space and that Outland movie from ‘81.) Same thing happens with The Thing, the men in The Thing are mostly support staff for the station, (see Antarctica: A Year On The Ice.)

Yup. Folks tend to overlook that they're not out there to explore. They're out there to haul ore back to Earth. Maybe they're miners... maybe they're just shipping. But on point - they're all there to support a much more mundane purpose. There's only one scientist. And his mission does not align with the crew.
Space truckers.
Ash is the only true scientist on board, though I'd suspect Kane has some sort of scientific background before he became Command Crew. It would explain his curiosity and eagerness to investigate the beacon and to explore the ship. Brett & Parker are obviously the engineers, there to keep the ship running. Lambert is navigation, Ripley seems to have a mechanical background before she became Command Crew and Dallas is the Space Trucker Captain, ferrying his cargo from the mining fields deep in space, back to Earth.
The Expanse starts out as a good modern version of workers in space. It has a lot of nods to this movie.
@@zenarcher9633 Yknow that makes a LOT of sense. He spoke like a researcher and scientist and even used descriptive terminology that a scientist would use.
The Android didn't listen to Ripley about the quarantine procedure not because she was a woman, but that she was counter to his mission. He was always going to retrieve the subject onto the ship at all costs, even to human life. Ripley was fighting the creature half naked in the escape ship, and was impossible to sexualize because it tapped into some caveman survival shit in all of us. For 1979, this movie was KING of universal concepts, and Ripley remains my favorite heroine, and top 3 HEROES ever.
Originally,the actress Veronica Cartwright who plays Lambert was suppose to play Ripley but Sigourney Weavers audition was so good,she got the part of Ripley.

One thing that people seem to miss is that Ash is the only science officer ... the rest are just basically truck drivers who have to investigate because their bosses say so. They mostly just want to get on with it and get home ...
An undeniable cinematic masterpiece for the ages
in those times they thought more at the film than the sequels, alien wasn't suppose to be a franchise but just a beautiful movie, a thing that maybe today is missing
The space suites were so good it prevented oxygen to be breathed by the actors once the helmets were on. The actors passed out during some of the shots while in full gear.
They passed out not frkm lack of oxygen but heat exhaustion, they had cooling fans built in to help cool them down between shoots

This is my all time favorite horror movie. There are very few classic movie reactions I look forward to as much as Alien. Especially from people who have absolutely no idea what the Xenomorph’s are or what they can do. I saw it when I was WAY too young at age 11. The Xenomorph was literally the embodiment of my nightmares throughout my childhood.
Fun/Scary Fact: The Xenomorph is actually based on a real life insect, the Tarantula Hawk which is a wasp from the southwest United States. It reproduces by hunting tarantulas, paralyzing them with it’s stinger, dragging them into the spiders hollow, laying an egg on the spiders belly, then the egg hatches and the larvae devours the spider from the inside out.

@Big Chap Maybe yours can. I frequently don't notice when something is CG, and frankly, I expect you don't either when it's done well. We notice when it's done badly. You've probably seen tons of CG and never noticed, especially when it's something you don't expect to be an effect. Even seen Fincher's Zodiac? There's amazing effects work in that film, all in the service of making San Francisco look like it did in the 60s and 70s.
For me, it's a tie between this and The Thing!

32:15 the way she dies and you don't see it just the sounds of dying, was more terrorfying for me when I first saw this as a teen it's a great form of suspence that works really well.

Alien was the first of its kind, a haunted house movie in space. Aliens is a war movie in space, which was also novel at the time.
"Aliens is a war movie in space, which was also novel at the time" - Well no, Star Wars did the whole war in space thing proper years before. Aliens is more of a rescue mission gone wrong in space type movie. And really, Galaxy of Terror (which was ironically a ripoff of Alien), another rescue mission gone wrong movie, was the prototype for Aliens. It's really fascinating how that worked out. James Cameron was the effect guy for Galaxy of Terror (but really, he nearly did everything), and pretty much took a lot of inspiration from his experience working on that movie when making Aliens.
There was an alternative ending that was never filmed,which had the Alien killing Ripley and it then copies/mimics her voice and talks into the flight recorder as it heads towards Earth.
Yeah I was said that. It could be very interesting.
There were several proposed endings. Two where the Alien kills Ripley. One where it kills her, but they're both blown out of the airlock. One where it bites her head off, and then we see its shadow as it sits down at the console and then talks - but not in Ripley's voice, but in Dallas' voice. There's another ending that was filmed where there is an egg or cocoon on the escape pod at the end, but it was cut from the final film.
17:20 This is not an exploration vessel with a crew of scientists. This is a commercial transport freighter.
40:40 Films building on suspense and have a slow build up are always way more intense than movies that rely on gore and jump scares all the time. That doesn't mean that the second category can't be fun or good, but it is a completely different approach - and the suspense movies have you at the back of your seat all the time, way more than jump scare movies do.
Speaking of femininity or masculinity - one of the aspects that makes this movie so good is that it doesn't need to reverse gender roles of put biology at absurdum. Ripley is a really strong character not because she's more powerfull than the men - she's not. Parker (the black guy) can overpower the android and can even fight back for a few moments against the Alien, Ripley cannot. But that doesn't make Parker a stronger character or Ripley weaker.
Modern day action movies try way too hard to turn heroines into someone who can overpower men easily which is simply not the case. Granted, in some scenarios like superhero movies this makes sense because in these movies the gender is meaningless, its all about who was the stronger superpowers, however in normal movies women are always at a disadvantage in a physical confrontation. Women can totally beat men in fights, but only if they are considerably better trained and perform on a much higher skill level.
The really good movies - like Alien - acknowledge that fact. Ripley is overpowered by Ash and has to be saved by Parker, but that doesn't make her weak by any means.
Ripley solves problems by being brave and getting the job done even when in panic mode; she never stops using her brain, she sees what needs to be done and then she goes to work. She doesn't have to be physically stronger to easily be the strongest (in a general sense) character on the ship.

the practical effects of these movies delightfully freak out so many that aren't use to this degree of attention to detail seeing this for the first time. Digital effects are almost without limits, but it seems some of the true movie magic has been lost with so little of this being used in modern movies.
I saw this 2nd day out in theaters when I was 14. The line went around the building. Most people had no idea what this film was about and were expecting a Star Wars type film. Yea, people were pretty shocked when they realized they were watching a horror film.
The trailer is brilliant- It makes you want to see the movie without ever telling you anything about it.

Actors Jack Nicolson and Warren Beatty went to see this together in 1978, and said it scared the crap out of them!! This movie was so scary, that audiences threw up, some ran out of the theatre. Others had a form of PTSD after seeing it. I wish I had a movie experience THAT cool!!!! Hahaha
Fun fact, ripley's nose bleed when she confronts ash is due to scene that was scripted but deleted.
As parker goes to refill the makeshift flamethrower he encounters the alien by an airlock, ripley catches up with him and he motions for her to be quiet as they watch the alien by the airlock. Ripley uses the intercom to contact lambert and asks her to open the inner hatch. The alien hovers jn the doorway looking at the strobe lights, then just as they hit the button to close the hatch it darts back and catchs a limb in the door as the outer hatch is blown, the acid blood eats through the hatch and depressurises the corridor causing bulk heads to close trapping parker and ripley, ash and lambert arive and let them out. The nose bleed is a result of the vacuum she was exposed to causing damage to blood vessels
I used to live next door to a carpenter who worked on Alien, He showed me some pics of the nostromo set before all the details were added and completed .... All just wooden boxes .... it was surreal to see :)
Also the set had the various decks laid out vertically as in a real ship, they were fantastic and really interesting listening to his stories.
Ripley is one of my favourite characters of all time. Also by far the biggest badass female lead ever. I have Sarah Connor as a close second but Ripley is just a little more real for me. Great reaction guys!
One thing I love about this movie is how quickly it establishes Ripley as the sensible one. So many movies rely on characters behaving like idiots to drive the plot forward.
Whoever told you that "Aliens" was better was out of their mind.
"Alien" changes the game for horror movies, "Aliens" was more like "Well the first one was good box office, so what do we do for a sequel? I got it! More aliens, some guns and explosions, and kill a bunch of soldiers".
Loved this film: back in 1979 is was really unusual, very natural dialogue where people repeat themselves, stumble over words, as people really speak.
Sets a strange tone to the film unlike most others.
There are lots of little clues about how these events are 'supposed' to happen, and the company they work for has sent them there to either die (proving how dangerous the alien contact is) or perhaps survive with information on the creature, with a science officer who's job is to do just that, or even bring one back.
The ship receives a transmission that changes their course, showing that the company knew about the alien, and the computer's (Mother) is reprogrammed to make the capture of the alien priority one. This is in the form of a dialogue between someone and the ship's computer, which is overruled (just the tone of the messages on the screens and their sound).
A new science officer, who is a company robot.
A tired captain who is beaten down to the extent that he only wants to do as he's told and get paid.
Kane is one who acts to explore, investigate and volunteers to run into the strange; this would be known by the company from their records and psychological records of the crew.
Two smart women, navigator and second officer, who will probably succeed in getting back.
Two mechanics of no importance, both unruly and difficult, making them expendable to the company.
There are several versions of this film, I saw two slightly different cuts back on first release; the latest has a number of re-inserted sequences: Lambert alone on the bridge, the crew listening to the alien transmission, Lambert belting Ripley in the face, Ripley finding what's happened to Dallas and Brett, and the longest version of the ship and refinery's explosion.
Movie is one of the best ever made
Ladies, the cat caused no issues. Poor Jones probably did not what to take a space trip in the first place. But was "volunteered" to keep the crew happy. Jones is my MVP as you can probably tell by now, I love animals and have a cat.🤣🤣🤣 Love the reaction.
I've always loved that Jones isn't a sweet, cuddly kitty: he's a cranky SOB who's probably caught his fair share of space mice.
Now you need to watch John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982), one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
Sadly the acting and dialogue in that film are not the best, although the effects are brilliant. But in Alien, everything is first rate.

One thing to keep in mind is that apart from Ash, who was deliberately trying to secure the alien for return to Earth, none of the crew are scientists. They're crew on a towing vessel that's basically hauling a refinery back to Earth. Ridley Scott referred to them as "truckers in space." They're not remotely experienced with these sorts of situations.
Ripley goes back to try and turn off the self-destruct mechanism because the alien was blocking the way to the escape shuttle...it had nothing to do with the cat.
I really have no idea why young people consistently seem to think that older films won't be engaging or exciting...it's not like writing has somehow taken a huge upswing in modern times. You should watch the 1942 film Casablanca...it has one of the best scripts ever.
Lambert couldn’t move out of the way, because she was trapped in a corner. She even says, I can’t get out of the way. Ripley had to turn off the destruct system, because the alien was blocking the entrance to the shuttle.
I actually prefer the original as a sci-fi horror movie, but Aliens is an action classic, with scary moments. I saw Alien in theaters at the age of 11 and it’s a fave ever since. This movie has to be experienced on a HUGE screen, with the best surround sound.

When creating the characters, genders were not assigned, they just gave last names. So, it wasn't so much disbelieving the woman as they ignored the voice of reason. Also, the reason the alien is moving slow in the shuttle is explained partially in the director's edit as well as in expanded universe. The alien in this movie is a drone. Drones, if by themselves, will take a couple of victims and alter them to become eggs (as seen in director's edit; Ripley finds Brett almost turned into an egg and Dallas turning). The process causes the drone to eventually die.
Er… they don’t become eggs, the drone prepares the victims to be hosts to more face-huggers coming OUT of the eggs already laid.
These will birth soldiers followed by a queen once there are enough soldiers to protect her.
@@thescourgeofathousan No sorry, the victims were originally intended to be transformed into eggs. Look carefully at the scene in the directors cut, you'll notice that Dallas and Brett are disfigured and appear to be melting. they are not cocooned as in Aliens, but are becoming the "egg cases".
That was Ridley's original idea. There was never any intention for an egg laying machine.

I guess it is less crazy sounding on paper but with how the eggs were laid out in the crashed engineer ship vs how Dallas and what’s his name were cocooned it just doesn’t match up at all. Them being cocooned in drone snot for hosting face-huggers makes much more sense when watching the movie.

If they had stuck to the original idea I don't think we would have had the wonderful Aliens.
The crew were scared and arguing, but it was The Company, through Ash, who overruled her.
I remember as a kid my dad had the VHS and told me not to watch it. He told me it was too scary. The first chance I was home alone, I watched it. I was so scared I did not sleep for weeks without waking up in panic. And then I watched it again and again. I love Alien, but the second one is my favorite. Sigourney Weaver is amazing in this one, but in the second one she is ready to take them all down.
I was a little kid in the early 80s and they showed it on TV. I was also told not to watch it.

I'm really loving that a new generation is discovering this classic again and appreciate it, despite the fact that it's old AF. The slow pacing, the cast, the music score, the camerawork, the exquisite set design and the creative input from HR Giger all just blend together so nicely. And the huge story twist that Ash is a robot. Me and my best friend watch this movie at least once a year🙂
The ending from Scott was the Alien beheading Sigourney and replicate her voice in order to get rescued. Fox’s executives hopped aboard a plane and flew to London 👉 are u freakin mad ??
In the book- which was written from the original shooting script- Ash reveals that the company had intercepted and translated the alien message, and had known all along what they were getting the crew into, but apart from the expense and risk of sending a science expedition, they figured getting the alien back through customs would be easier if it were "discovered" by a bunch of prospectors who found it by accident.
I did not know this. Do you know this book name and other such works that expands the alien universe apart from the movies?

There are a bunch of other Alien books out there. Several of them are adaptations of the Dark Horse comic book series of the late 80s-early 90s, and others are original. I don't know the authors on those, but most books stores seem to keep them all together.

I had to settle for the book when I was a kid because nobody would take me to the theater to see a rated R movie! Yes, in the film, Dallas mentions that their previous science officer was replaced by Ash two days before they left 'Thedus', presumably the place where the minerals came from.
I think the logic was that the company had intercepted the transmission, and the nostromo crew were the most convenient ones who would be on a course that could bring them close to LV-426. Plus, if they sent a proper expedition, it might risk word getting out to governments or rival companies. They might not have known there was an Alien there. But getting their hands on Alien technology before anyone else would be a big deal.
Love watching your first time reactions, since I've seen this a million times :D One important thing to keep in mind, each sequel was directed by a different director, with a totally different feel and vibe. Thank God, Weaver was in all of them because IMO she is what keeps it real and solid.
One isn't superior to the other: they're two completely different genres. And they're both brilliant.

16:00 most of the crew is just “space truckers” or miners so that’s why they have Ashe there as a science officer to help them make decisions like quarantining an alien life form or how to approach a wrecked alien spaceship that’s emitting a warning signal… but problem is this particular science officer had ulterior motives programmed by the Corporation

One of the most iconics films out there, a classic film and one of the most influences films. The soundtrack was composed by the great Jerry Goldsmith. I remember the first time i watched this film on Tv in 1984, on a friday night and i was so fascinating but afraid aswell that i can't explain! Thank U Ridley!

James Cameron's Aliens is my favorite movie of all time, can't wait for you to watch that. But this one is very close too. Just perfect on every level. I especially love the naturalistic sounding dialogue. The crew of the Nostromo feels real. Glad you enjoyed it! BTW: Ripley tried to disable the self destruct sequence again, because the alien was blocking the path to the shuttle and she wanted to buy more time to get there. It worked out, though. I also love that Ripley is a strong smart female hero decades before some hamfisted people patted themselves on the back for "inventing" strong female characters. ;)

Haha this was fun. Alien does hold up extremely well! It still terrifies audiences like it did back then. One of my MANY favourite things about this movie, and Ridley Scott's earlier movies, is how atmospheric and real they feel. It's like practical effects work at it's peak. Today's sfx is dominated by cgi and feel lifeless, imho.
The thing about the crew is that they basically truckers/miners in space and weren't trained in this area. But Aliens flips this, definitely worth watching
No one ever point's out that when Ripley confronts Ash in the lab, he's watching a reptilian looking creature on screen which he instantly turns off, which is the growing chestburster
Tbh Aliens is perfectly understandable without seeing Alien, but it's so much higher stakes that it's hard to go back to the first film if you had watched it out of order. I'd say it's comparable to Terminator and Terminator 2, in the same way.

nah Alien is a masterpiece, pretty much perfect with better pacing, greater mystery horror and tension building verses Aliens is more of an action movie not horror so I can go back and forth between the 2. Yet can watch Alien over and over and over again unlike Aliens. But to each their own. Both to me are great but Alien definitely takes the cake.

Before "Alien" the heroes were always men. The role of Ripley was originally written for a man. Ridley Scott then rewrote them for Sigourney Weaver. She became the first heroine in film history. A pioneer of emancipation in the Hollywood film business, so to speak. It's even better - in my opinion - in part 2. Also absolutely worth seeing! I was just 17 years old when the film hit the cinemas in Germany. He's practically burned into my head. I have to see him again and again.
Alien is a slow suspense horror, Aliens is a fast action horror. Different styles but both masterfully done
The first two Alien films are just incredible movie making. They're so nostalgic for me I loved them growing up 😍👍
Personally, I prefer the first one to Aliens. Not that Aliens isn't amazing, it is, but Alien has this sense of dread it maintains troughout, it's more of a horror movie while Aliens is more action centered as compared to horror.
Actually, the same can be said about Terminator 1 and 2. The first one is more of a slasher with a killer android while the second one is more of an action movie and I do like Terminator a bit more than T2.
About the esthetics, the practical effects and miniatures used are absolutely fantastic and hold up extremely well even today.
Also I like the look of the Nostromo, it somehow feels a bit unkept, the inside doesn't look sparkling white and clean which makes sense because apart from Ash and Kane, the others are just miners and pilots and maintenance crew, they're basically blue collars in space which is also why they don't react like superheroes and make questionable decisions. They're just regular people caught up in a horrifying situation which does a lot to make the movie and the characters believable and relatable.
At first no genders were assigned to the characters, the one of Ripley ended up being played by Sigourney Weaver and this movie instantly created the strong and smart woman in horror and the character of Ellen Ripley became a role model for a lot of women.
Another parallel with the Terminator franchise who also created a strong female character with Sarah Connor, especially in T2 where she is the whole movie in badass mode.
For other movies with awesome and gross practical effect: The Thing by John Carpenter, The Fly by David Cronenberg (don't eat before watching this film) and the werewolf transformation in An American werewolf in London, still 40 years later the best onscreen transformation ever made.
I agree 100%. Also, Aliens went a little to far for me with explaining the nature of the xenomorph and took some of its alieness away.

The only thing i said is that i like the style of the first Alien a bit better than the sequel and that's by no means derrogatory.
I'm not saying Aliens isn't a fantastic movie because it totally is.
I'm just a bigger fan of horror than i am of action (though i absolutely love action flicks) and that is why I do prefer Alien to Aliens and Terminator to T2.
But I am by no means bashing Aliens or T2 who are both amazing movies.

32:14, that scream sends chills down spine each and everytime. I’ve seen this movie multiple times, recently in the theater for its 45th anniversary. Still good to this day.
When you get to ALIENS, make sure it's the Director's Cut.
The body horror in this is great but it's nothing compared to the work of David Cronenberg, who did some of his best stuff around the time of ALIEN. He doesn't only do body horror, but if you wanna catch him at his prime, you need to check out THE BROOD, THE FLY and his legendary VIDEODROME. NAKED LUNCH is also magnificent, but that one requires homework to understand.
I still have nightmares about Videodrome. 😳
Lambert was also in Hitchcock's, The Birds. Go watch that.

THIS IS MY ABLSOLUTE FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME! [...Aliens is my second fav. ] I LOVE these ladies' reactions! Nearly the same reactions I had when I was a kid and saw this for the first time with my dad (rest in heaven dad 💜). I spent many sleepless nights absolutely scared out of my mind but came to adore this movie for it's amazing character development, set design, and fantastic sci-fi elements. I'm so glad these ladies can appreciate these elements as well! It's funny because I am 41 now and still have the same reactions as if I've never seen it and can warn the characters!

"Alien" is the superior movie, no contest! It's really a haunted house movie, but, in space.
I think you guys nailed it: the movie takes its time. You know if this was made today they would feel like they have to show the alien kill someone in the first five minutes, before the credits even. They'd be afraid the teenagers in the audience will get bored. It's such a pleasure to see a monster movie that doesn't do that, that goes to the trouble of setting the scene first, introducing he characters and getting you involved in their world. It trusts the audience to get invested and rewards them for it with a better, more sophisticated movie.

The Facehugger scene still looks amazing and it's 44 years old. Ripley is right about everything. This movie also created the Bechtel Test.

Dallas and Ash make a lot of dumb decisions at the start until it's revealed Ash had been programmed and put on board to protect the alien. To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit, Ash isn't evil, he's just programmed that way.
There is a sequel which covers what happens to Ripley next. The sequel has different mood, but widely respected. A couple more sequels of increasingly dismal quality.
The game Alien Isolation follows on some things revealed in the sequel.
Alien 3 is great. Many people like 3 more than Aliens. It is more realistic, whereas Aliens is just an all American military movie with a sickly sweet happy family story tacked onto it. The 3rd movie gets back to the horror.
Great reaction girls. Interesting fact: When the crew members rode down to the surface, and returned to the ship, Ridley Scott doubled his children in smaller suites to make the set look bigger. He did the same when they investigated the fossilized "space jockey" inside the alien ship. Did anyone else retain their "You are my lucky star" button for attending the premiers? I kept mine.😁
Late in the production they were behind schedule and running out of time; Ripley's nosebleed is from an earlier scene which had to be cut for that reason, but the scene with the nosebleed had already been shot & there was no time to redo it.
Everyone should have been forced to watch this movie in 2020 to learn what could happen if you break quarantine and don’t listen to the people in charge telling you NOT TO.

After seeing this movie for the millionth time, not really, but A LOT, I realized how Ash's voice sounds robotic from the beginning. Almost the first autotune voice in history. Autotune for singers is to mask how horrible their real voices are.
His voice sounds different from the other crew members. Also, picking up on a lot of his clues on how he sabotages the crew throughout. How he opened the door to let them in after the face hugger attached to Caine. Didn't stab the creature when it came out out of Caines stomach. And more.
Now I see why he is an android.

The crew aren't scientists or explorers. They're commercial transportation people. The situation is kind of like the crew of a FedEx or UPS flight being re-routed to an airport-- that eerily seems to be deserted-- to pick up a mystery package that contains something that escapes its box and proceeds to kill them off one by one.

Ripply was the first of the “boss chicks” to be introduced to modern society in movies like this. Imo there hasn’t been a real woman thriller like this ever since Ripply character because she shows her venerable feminine side as well as her boss chick side to perfection

I’m old enough to have seen this in the theater in 1979, and you’re absolutely right. We were in brand new cinema territory, with all the white male characters dying first, leaving Ripley, Lambert, and Parker, then eventually just Ripley. Nobody knew Sigourney Weaver, and the closest thing we got to a movie star was Yaphet Kotto, who’d played a James Bond villain, which is why he gets the “…and Yaphet Kotto as Parker” credit.
We were on edge the whole time, and people kept screaming, “It’s in the cat!!!!” It was like being locked in a haunted house.

This film is the template for moody atmospheric sci-fi thriller. Still one of the best ever and in my top ten fave films of all time. I'm glad both of you enjoyed it as much as you did. Ellen Ripley is the GOAT of the intelligent woman reluctant action hero.
You simply cannot fathom the gravity of effect this movie had in 1979. I managed to get to see this in my first year of college thinking it sounded cool etc. Not much pre-knowledge and no spoiler trailers. Just hearsay. Watching the film in the theatre among hundreds of other people was the most visceral experience I have ever had. Most people literally shit themselves halfway through the movie & there were audible gasps from pretty much everyone during the chest bursting scene. That simply cannot be repeated in this day and age. The only other time that happened to me was the jaw dropping opening scene on Star Wars, which I watched at the same cinema, 3 years earlier. That shit can never be topped....ever.
