Excellent video. This has been my go-to way of doing things for ages in FCP. The random clicks are there because FCP doesn't cut to zero crossing in the waveform hence resulting in a very audible click on every random cut. Audio is the biggest FCP's achilles heel in my opinion. More than anything else, we should have proper audio plugins handling by now (e.g. adding a simple reverb is such a chore if your audio event is not long enough)- keep the roles but add bus processing the is *not* clip-dependent. Sadly, there are not many FCP editors that are audio-savvy enough to explain all these to the team but they should have merged more options from Logic by now :) Love your videos Rafael! 🤘🏻
Thanks Dom! There are so many things I love about fcp - and a few things that are frustrating, audio handling being one of them. Mostly love though! Thanks for watching and the comment Dom!
@@nagual2335 yes and this is a limitation of the clip-based effect editing. But what if you want to add a quality peak limiter inside a compound clip and then want to edit it outside? Clicks and pops in every cut point because FCP cant deal with non-zero crossings or latency introduced by plugins. This is basic audio stuff and FCP is way behind. Even for a consumer app these things should be there.
@@DomSigalas I did some experimenting yesterday. To my astonishment I found that I can apply global effects on the rolls, and a Master effect on the compound. Means: after you “ extent audio parameters “ on a compound, You can apply effects on the Master, and “track effects” on the rolls - and they Pass \ Sum through the master in realtime. That pretty much solved most of my problems. Especially when I want to mix into a Mastering Limiter, for example. To avoid the issue when FCPX freezes when you tweak a plugin (builds the audio WAV too soon) - I found that you can disable that annoyance by changing the timeline to show video parts only without their audio. Then FCPX stops re-buildings audio waves every time you tweak something, and you can edit faster
WOW I considered myself a pretty advanced FCP user (I edit on it to pay the bills) and I DID NOT KNOW THIS! This is a huge game-changer for me. Thank you for sharing!
FYI I just discovered that you can apply a Mastering plugin like limiter or any other on the Main compound region, and process the extended rolls in realtime. they will be routed to the Master in realtime! Game changer!
Can't wait for Buses and effects on roles to get added! Great "work around" also at 7:39 you can just click the audio meters right below the video player to turn them on and off ;)
Apple has a lot of UI, ease of use considerations given the potential number of directions, roles roles-based mixing can go. I have a hunch that's one reason that is slowing them down. One could be an easier way to make a compound clip including the selection process. Another might be how a compound clip follows changes when going back to make changes. Perhaps it's finding a way to make easier selections in the Index. Perhaps a button in the index for a role to behave as a compound clip. So many variables. Perhaps also deal with issues around expanding component audio as well. The assignment of roles needs to be as easy as the assignment of audio tracks.
@@RafaelLudwig my big question is can I put a Master effect (Like limiter) on the compound clip - and then mix the the bottom layers “Into” the master effects. I’m gonna try it 👌
@@RafaelLudwig To my astonishment it did work. Means We have a Master Bus ! We can apply audio processing to the rolls, while the Master can have a limiter or a mastering plugin in realtime. GAME CHANGER ! It might even be possible to use this method for more busses in realtime, but I need to try and see how to do this. Can't thank you enough!
@@nagual2335 Now if only we can add it directly to the Role in the index panel, so we don't have to use compound clips that would be amazing! Glad I was able to help!
Good tip. It's too bad FCPX got rid of Soundtrack Pro or some easy way to roundtrip between something like Logic Pro. As someone that loves FCPX, I am finding that they are falling behind pretty much all the other editing systems even though this particular lack has been missing since FCPX as you mentioned. FCPX is just so good at editing smaller projects really quickly that we still use it for those kinds of projects. If Davinci makes their cut page more like FCPX, we will probably switch over completely.
Yeah I know, the unfortunate side of the TH-cam game. Many don’t know about it, and try to mix in the main timeline. Thanks for watching and the comment Gabriel!

You can compound the clip, extent it, and apply reverb on the compound. Still, I agree that the audio editing features are limiting

This was the missing part for me! 🥰 Thanks so much for the explanation, this helps me so much! ✨👍🏻

10 out of 10 … any lower score I would not add one 😊…And, thank you.
This isn't a fix, it's actually the official way to mix audio according to the Final Cut Pro User Guide.
