If you want to save 8 more seconds throughout the next 15 years, just option/alt click the video clip instead of unlinking for the J cut. It will just temporarily ignore the cut without you having to hit the button or shortcut you created to turn it on and off for every time you want to do it. Great video!

3:15 there are few ways to do the same in Resolve. You can either use Swap Clips towards left or right and use the hot key ctrl+shift+, Or you can use which I use mostly is to hold down ctrl + shift and drag the clips to rearrge it, and it basically moves the clips in the timeline to make space for the clip you are moving, it also spits the clip if you try to move a clip in the middle of another clip, very handy. The J & L cut workflow seems a bit slow and counter intuitive IMO. You can easily hold alt to select either the video or just the audio and the make a trim to do J and L cuts very easily and fast.
Yeah I learned about these after as well 😅 Need to make a follow up because they are good options. That being said it still isn’t as “easy or intuitive” imo. But again, I use resolve daily and have been using what you called out and it isn’t that bad 😊

Hey Philipp of course!!! You don’t HAVE to switch , but just trying to help those who are or want to learn both since as a huge editing nerd I use both 😂😂
Coming from fcpx the thing I miss the most is Favorite and Keyword certain ranges of a clip. I know there is subclip in resolve but nothing beats the cross reference power(locating a clip thru multiple different keyword) of fcpx. If you know a work around in resolve please let me know❤
totally agree with this... haven't really found a good workaround other than to just try and be as organized as possible with bins ahead of time (and even then it still just kinda sucks and isn't even close in comparison)
What part is making you “wonder”? I have reached the point where the magnetic timeline isn’t faster. Because I’ve gotten used to track based I now am just as fast and then add all the new tools and you can save hours on projects. Took a long time to get there, but you can. I love this video. Most of the power and stablilty in Davinci FCPX is currently missing. Now if you can find a way to organize like in FCPX with keyword ranges of clips and creating selects with favorites i will have to really reconsider alot lol.
I need to look at this closer. I'll be the first to admit that even i never really fully utilized the feature in final cut. I might be missing out big time, but in some ways it made the learning curve on resolve less because the file management system in my opinion felt much better haha. So I should go study and try and see how to compare this and how to think about it. you think DR isn't as stable? i mean i guess it isn't. but the difference hasn't ever been enough to bother me. Also FC has gotten a lot more buggy lately which is really frustrating.
Great tips however, when swapping clips left or right, for example, audio tracks can be over written inadvertently even when tracks are locked and disabled, therefore, it's recommended that you have eyes on all layers when performing shortcut maneuvers in Resolve.😵😳 When moving tracks up and down, empty tracks are created which is a major pain in the butt as well. Also, the timeline view constantly changes, zooming in and out, as these edits are made causing me confusion and disorientation. Man, Davinci has a lot of work to do before it can come anywhere close to the elegance and ease of to use that is FCPX.
Agree with all of this. Definitely none of this makes it “better” than the magnetic timeline. But it gets you closer and helps you understand some more complex moves you can do in track based editing :)
Bro legit u spoke about everything else except scrobbling. What this is just previewing content via just hovering ur mouse on timeline on fcp and u can see it in the monitor without clicking anything or specific area like in resolve. Is it possible in da vinci? Thats the main con for me not to switch to resolve.
It is unfortunately not possible.... guess what though. Part 2 launches today and I try to tell you my best ways to address that very problem ;) and if we get it a bunch of views maybe BlackMagic will watch and consider adding the toggleable skim playhead
@@jakefelzien thanks a lot. I'll be waiting. yeah that skimmer is just perfection. also I saw the cut page does that in a way but then you cannot zoom out from the timeline there and its just so close and when you slide left or right it acts like a skimmer but it moves like few seconds.
Guys... Can I not hover around the timeline and skim through footage? Also... is it possible to just click anywhere on he time line to move the playhead?
I have start to trim and End to trim as G and H on fcpx but for some reason DR does not let me use G? I get an ! mark and cannot figure out how to change it. I fly through my trims to end and start by just hitting one key and No option or other Key stroke needed. And way of doing this? Thanks!
You gotta turn off default G behavior. (I forget what it is) but if you click G it should show you the other hotkey and then just take it off. And then yeah using “select under playhead” should help you do what you’re saying for trimming down a roll
Thanks for the fast response, yes it was assigned to something else but I said to change it but did not work? Might be a 19 final release bug since I just updated to the final version. Thanks
Since you are my main source now hahaha, any way the play head can follow my cursor like FCPX or do we always have to click and drag the cursor or timeline line thingy, cannot remember what it is called. The red line parked over the time line, it does not go to where I click and have to always grab it manually and drag it.
Yes, you are correct. This is arguably one of my biggest frustrations and I don’t know why they haven’t added it. So no, doesn’t exist in resolve and I’ve been trying to for many many years. Find a solution that feels anything close to it.
@@jakefelzien What the heck? Yes I agree. I have another question. Since there is NO fast way to hit I/O F and then make my timeline from those selects, DUH Davinci, so easy to make timelines, Can I make all my selects in the cut page or where ever then drag all those selects to a Bin or folder and then build a timeline just off those selects in a Bin? That is actually one of the only reason I cannot try and move over to Davinci. Thanks!
@@jakefelzien Are you playing with the 18.5 beta? Starting using Davinci for the first time after watching your videos yesterday after almost 10 years with FCPx. My mac doesn't cut it anymore and I've got a beast of a PC so thought I'd give it a crack rather than fork out double the money for the same specs haha. Not sure if there are some new bits and pieces but when you first open it it asks you whether you want to copy the layout/shortcuts-ish (I can't remember the exact words) of FCPx! So far it is absolutely mint. No trouble on the cross over whatso ever. Clips push out of the way, can be drags on top, spaces can be deleted. Its pretty much got a magnetic timeline option which I find barely different to FCPx. Super interesting.
This was great. How are you liking the transition. There are so many logical things in Final Cut that just feel "right". But then I love the media organization with bins in Resolve and all of the advanced features/fx/color grading (nodes are actually awesome) in resolve. I'm not fast on the edit page just yet although the speed editor helps a lot. The playhead is so strange from what I'm used to like having to click the top of the timeline to direct where I want the playhead to go is maddening!
Oh and as far as the destructive feeling of resolve I was losing my mind until I realized you have to utilize auto track selector disable/enable some for the clips you want to stack etc. Final Cut handles this way better in my opinion. You don't really have to think so hard but there are positives to the way DR handles with locking tracks etc.
Dominic great thoughts!! I agree. Don’t like at all how the Resolve play head works. It sucks in comparison. Otherwise I feel like generally speaking I am equally capable in both at this point. Few annoying things here or there. But that is also for Final Cut. For example doing the smart a-roll cutting saves so much time and you don’t have that in Final Cut. Just two different tools and I can’t seem to settle on “just one” indefinitely
Well honest answer! :) I do! Haha. I use both. Haven’t ever really switched away from one or the other. But I am a gigantic editing nerd and therefore love playing around with editing software. So my goal is to hopefully give people the info they need if they wanted to switch and not use both. Resolve in every way except the magnetic timeline is now significantly better than Final Cut. The tools are faster/newer/more powerful than anything Final Cut has to offer. So that is why you might switch. But also, just like anything in life, if Final Cut is working for you and has all the tools you need, don’t switch 😊
I’m having issues with slow motion. Making travel videos I use it a lot (probably too much tbh)… with FCP I just bring my footage in select everything and automatically retime them. If I change my mind I can switch individual clips fast at anytime. In DaVinci it is a headache. I have to bunch all of the High Frame rate clips together retime the first clip in cut page, copy, and move all the attributes the other clips. I end up with all my High FPS clips together, but out of sequence with the story. Idk feel there has to be a better way, but haven’t been able to find it yet.
This is a toughie. I definitely don’t have a great solution because the way Final Cut does this is phenomenal. Maybe start to play around with multiple timelines to play and tweak them?
@@jakefelzien okay interesting I will give that a shot. I watched someone named Alex something and found out that you can retime them in the media library so I think that will help a lot as well. At least for it to get onto my timeline already slowed down will be a big help. Thanks again for all the help. Really trying to buy your course or rather be a member. Hopefully TH-cam will give me the option again soon. I’ll stop bugging you for now haha. Have a good one.

@@jakefelzien I hope not, but pretty sure they did. This is my personal account, but on my channel in the Studio they said something about putting a pause on memberships. Maybe they let you keep the ones you have, but not add new ones for now. I can’t find the membership on your channel. Currently editing my first video in DaVinci. Still not sure if it is worth the switch from FCP, but kinda like what your latest video was saying.. for whatever reason I am enjoying the experience. It feels fun again, even though I still suck with DaVinci. Idk if it is the look, feel, or just the novelty of the process. Maybe I am just tired of looking at FCP for awhile lol.
@@KindHappyLove I’ve got no indication and I’m still seeing that they are there so I wonder if it’s something on your end I’ll have to look more into it. And I totally agree often times just being in a different place really inspires you to make new stuff. I felt that way when I first switched to resolve. At same thing switching back-and-forth. As someone who just loves editing, I’m not sure I’ll ever not switch for that reason
@@jakefelzien I’ll look into it more as well. I hope I can join and get that course. Any advice on my other comment and dealing with multiple high frame rate clips. In FCP it is soo easy to automatically retime and back again. My work around in DaVinci sucks so far. Throws all my clips out of sequence.
Thanks for the video, If only DR would be as easy and fast for making selects I would also give Davinci more of a chance. Nothing is as easy and as fast as FCPX to rip through clips Hit I/O Hit F and move on and then make my timeline from that favorites. As it is now with DR there are too many extra steps or Keystrokes to do something even "similar". Only if they would they would some how allow me to do something like that. I have been asking for years in the DR forums. The double timeline way a lot of DR make there selects and build timelines is just too cluttered. Hopefully one day. Seems like something they could add no problem. Yet it's a no go for me. And color grading is also a no go bc of the Sony mismatch files and timecode problems. Which is a Sony problem. OH well.
Yeah there has to be a better way but i think fundamentally Raf that is just a tough one. Trying to think of a metaphor here but it is like wishing that trains could turn onto highways. the fundamental "design language" just doesn't allow for it without it feeling insanely clunky
L and J cuts are simple in DR. Just hold down the option key on the edit, either video track, or audio track and move left or right. That way only the video track or only the audio track will move and not both.
@@normanlang1 Norman someone else suggested this and I need to try it that sounds pretty sweet. That being said, even if you’re moving clips and such though, it’s still is kind of a pain.

Bro this was so interesting and it’s gonna be so useful when I do make the shift 😂
You use Final Cut still?? That is sick ☺️
Guys... Can I not hover around the timeline and skim through footage? Also... is it possible to just click anywhere on he time line to move the playhead?
It isn’t 😔
You could only hover scrub when the blade tool is active
Thanks
Somehow the second option doesnt work on PC. Assuming Command is Alt. Its doesn't behave any differtnly
Probably is a PC thing 😬
Just google the hot key or whatever the alternative for “option” is
Since you are my main source now hahaha, any way the play head can follow my cursor like FCPX or do we always have to click and drag the cursor or timeline line thingy, cannot remember what it is called.
Thanks!
You're a legend mate. This is gold. Had me laughing hard.
Thanks so much 🙏
@@jakefelzien Are you playing with the 18.5 beta?
My god your edits are so good
Thanks Bax 🤘🤘 so kind of you man
Excuse me! Honest question: why not just simply stick to Final Cut Pro?
@@KindHappyLove Joseph you are the best don’t even feel bad about bugging me. I love this stuff!!! If membership doesn’t work out DM me and we can try and figure something out
Can not figure out how to change start to play head and end to play head. I’d like Q set to start and W set to end. But so confused
Like how to actually change the hot keys themselves?
@@jakefelzien yeah man. I'm trying. But even the Custom keyboard is not as simple as final cut lol.
@@Soul_Visuals_Photography i'll add this to my to-do list for a short, but yeah it is more complicated, but the idea is relatively the same
@@jakefelzien ok. I still can't figure it out. Subscribed and notifications on. I'll try to find you on the gram too
Looks like TH-cam nuked memberships. Any other way I can access your course?
They nuked memberships???? I don’t think so 😬
@@jakefelzien I hope not, but pretty sure they did.
Place on top you can make in a hot key. What are you talking about?
Yes. Corrected in second video
Extremely entertaining video.
Thanks Lucas ☺️🤘🤙
Man, it sucks that Apple isn't keeping up with Black Magic. They need to update FCPX to meet modern standards,
It’ll happen. Just probably pretty slowly
The way you weaved a story into this video too is awesome
Haha thanks Ben ☺️☺️
noice and very nice
Hey thanks so much 😌
Perfect!
Perfect?!? No way 😂😂
you did not tellhow you achieved the number 2
Huh?
OH well.
Fair points for sure 👍
Thumbnail goes hard
Mr Beast of Editing 😂🤣
Hahaha for real
The thumbnail! L & J cuts FTW. (Still feels sloppy in DR)
