Hell ya brother 🤘🏼 Save them by hitting save effects preset and you should be set. Usually I'll add my custom preset to a new audio clip of mine and then make sure the compressor needle is pumping up about 3 to 5 dB.
I have watched several voice audio editing in FCP videos today and yours was the best! I was amazed at other videos that only provided numeric values verbally (no titles) and were produced using audio of the speaker that had some bad frequencies and room reverberation. Your advice is great, on-point, well-conveyed and your audio mix sounds terrific.
This literally just made me confident enough to start putting out vids. I've hated my voice audio for years but I now have a drag and drop effect that makes every voiceover perfect every time. Love all your vids but this is invaluable! Thank you!

I mad the mistake when FCPX came out with the voice isolation feature. I mistakenly uploaded my FCPX to use voice isolation. Only to find out Color Finale hadn’t updated yet in short I’m back to using it again. You have made some great tutorials! Thank you. Yet this tutorial was so giving & informational. It’s going to make me follow & study your tutorials even more. I’m going study your Luts tutorial farther. I use the X-Rite video target. I want to be a bad ass using FCPX & Color finale for my color grading.

Quick additional tip: in addition to pressing forward slash to start a clip from the beginning, if you do this first View > Playback > Loop Playback (or press Command-L) then when you press forward slash it'll actually loop the clip indefinintely or audio selection indefinitely so that you can just concentrate on the audio editing.
Changing the audio to 'dialogue' was a simple and super helpful tip! I am not sure what the difference is between that and changing it to 'dual mono' but I seem to get clearer dialogue with that change. Thanks so much!
Hey man, I know this video is old but it was SUPER helpful! I just had one question. What should I do if after zeroing out my computer and setting the threshold and ratio, the compressor still isn't hitting in that 3-8db range? I find myself having to crank the threshold above 30 to get it there.
Hey man! That is correct. Once you zero it out and you find where it's sitting, bump the threshold till you get it within that range. Usually mine's around that area as well.

I just got the sense after reading the Apple website about the limiter, that its features are a little more fine tuned, for lack of a better term, than the compressor's limiter (however I could be wrong). I did a little research on the appropriate way to set the FCP's limiter, and now it's just become a part of my workflow (especially because I've saved presets for different scenarios, so I seldom pull it up anyways).

Hey Dylan - I've gotten some great results for my clients now with this video with some fiddling - I tried the trial for crumplepop and it sounds great but their pricing model is kind of insane now - they don't allow individual purchases of plugins anymore. do you have any alternatives since this video?
Hey hey! Interesting...ya I've heard they've parted ways with FX Factory. FX Factory sent me a plugin called, DeRoom I think and that' works very similarly to Crumplepop. Give that a shot.
@@oliverw.1187 That's a tough one. If you're doing a lot of client work, hands down Artlist. Once you download that song you can use it whenever you'd like and as far as I know, you're free to use it for client work. With MusicBed, you can only use the song when you have a subscription. So if you download a song and months go by after your subscription is done and you try and use it, you'll get a copyright on your video. You can't use MusicBed for client work as well (I think you'd have to pay quite a bit of money to get a subscription to use songs for client work). Both have great music though.

Great video, thank you. I have a problem that I cant get around, when doing a multi cam and adding the effects to each audio track, whenever the camera switches there is a noticeable pop in the audio. No idea why, tried to even reinstall FCPX, nothing. Anyone know a fix for this?
Hey Dylan, I used this approach to create an audio effect and it perfectly worked for a few weeks but as soon as I updated my Final Cut Pro today, it wrecked the entire effect. Did you experience the same problem? What do you recommend to fix it?
Yep yep! I experienced the same issue, Sam. I think it's because they updated some of the interfaces of those effects so they're just not linking. Unfortunately, I'd recommend just making the presets again from scratch. I know that sucks, but that's a better option than waiting for them to release an update to fix this bug.
Thanks so much! Question: If I'm editing a long video and have lots of cuts which result in several individual clips in the storyline, do you suggest combining into a single clip before doing the audio edits you pointed out? Or would it be better to apply all the effects BEFORE cutting into clips and editing the track?
Absolutely do it before cutting the clips. What I do is add everything and then throw the clip or clips into their own compound clip. That way I can enter the compound clip to make any adjustments to the original clip at any point in the edit.
@@ThePianoSenseiWay Because what happens when you cut up that clip a bunch and then realize that you actually need to change an audio setting or video effect? You'd have to change all of those cut clips. Whereas with the compound clip, you can just double click one of the cut clips and see the original clip in there.

Thanks Dylan. Your detailed instructions helped me understand a lot of the sound editing process. Especially the EQ sweeping. Having the target settings was very helpful in all the different tools.
This. Was. AWESOME! I've been meaning to brush up on my audio game and just happened to come across this thinking, "Meh, whatever, quick review I guess..." Nope! Totally taught me some new tricks (namely EQ Sweeping)! ONLY suggestion for future vids would be to have a brief explanation of attack/release on the various filters. Fortunately I'm familiar with them, but I think it's important enough to mention to people coming in fresh to the topic. Thanks for the vid!

What does the make up gain do?
Thanks so much! Question: If I'm editing a long video and have lots of cuts which result in several individual clips in the storyline, do you suggest combining into a single clip before doing the audio edits you pointed out? Or would it be better to apply all the effects BEFORE cutting into clips and editing the track?
Absolutely do it before cutting the clips. What I do is add everything and then throw the clip or clips into their own compound clip. That way I can enter the compound clip to make any adjustments to the original clip at any point in the edit.

@@ThePianoSenseiWay Because what happens when you cut up that clip a bunch and then realize that you actually need to change an audio setting or video effect? You'd have to change all of those cut clips. Whereas with the compound clip, you can just double click one of the cut clips and see the original clip in there.

This. Was. AWESOME! I've been meaning to brush up on my audio game and just happened to come across this thinking, "Meh, whatever, quick review I guess..." Nope! Totally taught me some new tricks (namely EQ Sweeping)!
ONLY suggestion for future vids would be to have a brief explanation of attack/release on the various filters. Fortunately I'm familiar with them, but I think it's important enough to mention to people coming in fresh to the topic.
