I was told "THE SECRET" to better GOLF SWING BALANCE

  • An old golf professional told me the secret to better golf balance and why an older technique is better than a modern approach. The secret to better golf swing balance puts the golfer in the correct athletic position with the point of balance where it should be not where you're told it looks like it should be?
    All will be explained.

    This one tip is fantastic! I did not realize I was getting too much on the balls of my feet during the swing, I was drifting forward toward the ball. It was very subtle, so I couldn't figure out why I was striking the ball poorly. This was causing me miss-hits and to shank it every now and then. I tried keeping my weight more on the heels during the swing as suggested in this video and eureka! I immediately began to strike the ball better and with a much better balance. This is hands down the best golf tip of the year for me, thanks.

      Literally a "eureka" moment for me too. I was either shanking or hitting pull hooks!

    Thank you!!! great information. Many times I hit the golf ball on the heel of my club because of a forward weight shift towards the ball on the downswing.

  • @HVACKABOOM
    @HVACKABOOM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Wow. Such s subtle thing that would never be discernable watching slomo videos.
    I was hitting balls at lunchtime today. The pro went by and we chatted for a moment, he pointed out something about my swing, the subtlest of details. Big improvements followed.
    Your comments about counter action(s) is such a lightbulb moment for me.
    If you are too weight forward you have to bring your arms in during the swing or you will topple slightly at the moments before impact. How can we possibly swing smoothly with that happening? Also we will loose some component of the forward energy it will be vectored off to the inside adding some slice spin to the ball.
    Amazing stuff. Thanks.

    Good lesson Steve, I have had problems with finishing on my toes after every swing. I feel stronger with more knee bend and that means for me more weight on the balls of my feet. I have struggled with loss of balance most of my golfing career even though I have been a low handicap player for over 40 years. Not quiet getting the new feeling you have suggested but will work on it in my net when the weather warms up here in St Andrews.

    This is something I’ve been working on a lot and this video just confirms it for me. I am about two years in and found myself feeling like I’m falling forward and a lot of time hitting fat. Focusing on getting the weight back has helped my balance a ton.

  • @roeydaz
    @roeydaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’ve been waiting for some pro to talk about this. To this I’d add my two bits and say that in order to achieve good balance throughout the swing you need to find that slot at the top of your swing where you are able to stay in that ball to heel balanced position. Which generally means being a bit flatter so the club weight doesn’t upset your balance. From their shifting forward is much easier. Comes naturally. But it needs practice as it upsets your timing! Thanks Steve for touching upon this interesting aspect!

    • @WendelltheSongwriter
      @WendelltheSongwriter ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah this is well said. Getting in that slot at the top of the backswing with the briefest of a pause and resisting the urge to lift the heel up In the downswing really helps my balance. I mean geez I was in shankville and couldn't figure out why. The right heel.

  • @jesseruiz9257

    Steve, I thought about this tip a lot and it made me think about my posture when putting. So, armed with putter, golf balls and a bedroom carpet I set work, aiming to shift my weight back towards my heels. Results? Lower body felt much more stable, leading to more consistent strike and "feel" when hitting the ball. Many thanks

  • @WendelltheSongwriter
    @WendelltheSongwriter ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah due to an injury I've had balance issues, in particular in my lead foot. So the compensation for that is kind of to get down on your right front foot and toes and kind of push. But that was lifting my heel off the ground and that was resulting in all those problems you've talked about.
    I started putting about 65% on my lead foot and keeping it relatively still and then keeping my right heel on the ground and I've had just tremendous striking and direction control. It's good to have my swing back thank you.

    I have noticed to stand more on the heels making my swing much more stable and easier on plane however I could not always achieve this position. This tip is really great.

  • @windhamhornby1593
    @windhamhornby1593 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is absolutelyspot on and has been a "light bulb" moment for me as it at last helped me overcome a serious problem I have with shanking. I have been told in the past to have a more dynamic posture by getting the weight on the balls of my feet. However this never really felt comfortable as it throws me forward and as a result I developed a bad habit of hitting the ball out of the hosel. Transferring the weight much more to the heels as your old pro suggested now gives me the space to swing round my body and hit it out of the sweet spot. Thanks Steve for sharing this. Some of these old pros really did know what they were talking about!

    • @fraserlawson8522
      @fraserlawson8522 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same for me too. Weight too far forward means the risk of the clubhead moving forward during the swing and the inevitable shank.

    This is perhaps the best advice for setup and posture ever.(not trying to be too dramatic) the way you explain is excellent and easy to follow. I would always setup bending from the hips but I would always cant my weight towards balls of feet. Your setup provides opportunity for controlled balance and helps me not to early extend.

  • @stumpjumper1dc
    @stumpjumper1dc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice tip. I have been working on it before I saw this video. Like anything you have to adapt it to your swing but I am liking the concept. Weight in the toes can cause a lot of problems as you describe. Just look at the left foot of any (right-handed) pro through and after impact. You can almost always see a whole lot of spikes. Cheers

  • @miker5502
    @miker5502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is certainly good advice, when I first started playing golf I was quite often pulled off balance by the force of the swing, resulting in mishits and a terrible finish. Sure enough as soon as I placed more weight towards the heels my swing improved and once you get the feel of it you can swing much more aggressively. Great video and gem of a tip. Cheers from Nova Scotia.M.

    When I feel weight towards my heels I feel more bending in my ankles with my shins angled a bit more forward. Feels like the angled shins direct force back and down through my heels into the ground behind me and I do not come out of posture and my left hip moves out of the way on its own. A very strong position and move into the ball. LOVE IT!

    Brilliant. Hope this helps someone else (particularly former athletes) ..... Having worked at this dilligently over the last 2 weeks on the range I'd hoped to see some impact on my scores. Did I? Naaah! My head got in the way again. Now, I hear you saying "Obviously doing something seriously wrong with the club there if your head gets in the way". Let me explain... Despite all the best practice on the range it wont work if, when you're down on the course, you go to it with the attitude "Done the practice, paid my dues so right let's get after this ". You'll be back on the balls of your feet just that split second before you start your backswing. It needs a different mental approach, too. Having Joseph Parent's book, Zen Golf, on the bedside table won't help unless you read it. Which is what I started doing again last night. I loved this video. I hope to do it justice.

    Interesting. In just the LAST lesson I had, I mentioned to my instructor that I was working more on keeping my weight in the middle of my feet as to not get it too far forward, and he practically scolded me, saying that he wanted to weight more on the balls of the feet. I definitely DO NOT feel comfortable with my weight that far forward.

      Yeah don't do it!!!!! I went from shooting a 70 on a par 72 course. White tees. In the last year I have struggled mightily to stay under 90! Why? Yep you guessed it. Weight more on the balls of the feet. My dispersion pattern became very inconsistent. One left (pulled). One straight. One right (blocked). It was like I played as a beginner really. Balance is so much better now. Turn is bigger. Hips clearing easier. More lag. Baby draws again. Time to make the swing feel smooth again.If it ain't broke don't fix it!

    I stumbled onto this working on my full-finish position (a weakness in my swing). To achieve and hold a stable balanced full finish position I found I needed my weight set into my left heal. However, I couldn’t get there without my weight being in my heals during the swing. I do it a little differently to help everything feel more dynamic and fluid. I start with my weight under the arches of my feet. In the takeaway-backswing I shift my weight into my right heal while pushing my right hip away from the target line. In the transition-downswing-follow through (after shifting towards the target) I drive my weight hard into my left heal while pushing my left hip back. I found shifting my weight into my heals eliminated my early extension issues and freed up my rotation. Wish I had figured this out years ago.

Never reading another golf article unless its from this secret " old" professional. Thanks Steve for confirming an intuitive motion similar to throwing a ball. Like you said we are propelling something not reacting to something moving! And I have to add if you have more muscle or mass in your legs than an average person you need to do this even more. Great advice.

    Very important balance tip, thank you. If you check weight is back before taking stance with club on ground. !. get nice straight back 2. bend knees slightly 3. place club in position with forward, straight spine waist bend. Then the balance stays back on the feet and the back stays straight. Lastly you may have to shuffle forward or back to get club in right location behind the ball. This order means the back does not change its bend to position club.

    There are two ways to find ideal posture and stance width for an individual.
    One is to jump up in the air as high as you can and then land into a golf posture. If you let it, your brain will automatically give you perfect stance width and weight distribution.
    Two, is to slide our hands down your thighs until your finger tips touch just above your kneecaps. Then flex your knees.

    Always been told to rock between my heels and the balls of my feet and then find the center so everythings centered between the two.

    Heel and toe and away we go. It's like a dance lesson. We've been getting dance, I should say golf, lessons for years and the golfer or should I say the whacker still can't get it. Most golfers should be bowling or playing checkers. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
