I love it! This is the idea behind the physics of why the "whip" of a regular flex shaft produces more clubhead speed at impact compared to a stiff flex shaft, if it's swung at the same speed. Or, an American football quarterback using their front leg as a post to throw against to produce maximum velocity and distance on a pass. On my next trip to Scotland, I'm going to swing by and have a few pints and sips.
Steve, this is a brilliant video which shows how the snap of a a whip or the casting of a fishing rod , both of which require the sudden stop of the forward motion of the hand, applies equally in the golf swing. As I worked on this today on the range, I was not quite sure if I should maintain the bow in my left wrist and the bending backwards of the right wrist until the nano second before I the ball or if I should naturally release the wrists sooner. Any advice would be appreciated.
I would say when you hit the brakes on your swing you transfer angular momentum into the outside of the swing aka the ball. I’m very keen to get this to work. Thanks man, cheers!
Ya know this actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve always wondered why I can hit an iron shot (and sometimes driver) better when I don’t try to have a long elegant followthrough. I have a hockey and baseball background so a feeling of stopping before the target object (and not so much through it) is a weird one for me. But you present some clear evidence of its benefits here 👍🏻
Excellent, Steve! When folks watch this video they will finally understand what the old masters referred to as the "release". Modern teachers have no clue! You can tell when they start their explanation of the release with words like, "I feel or I think" or they talk about the body release. Total nonsense! Keep up the great work!
Hahaha 1983 swing smooth, that's when I learnt how to play golf at 13. Constantly told don't try to swing out of your boots. Great video cheers from Australia.
The analogy I think of that I never hear anyone say is.. have you even been fly fishing? you have to stop the shaft of the fishing pole to release the line that has been loaded up on your "back swing".
@guitarMonke, smart analogy! This video is gold for those who look for speed !! I understood this physics truth when I had to play a 6i very close to a tree to fly over a water hazard at 150 yards. I had to stop fast and the ball flied amazingly. The same day a 7i to reach a green stayed stuck just after impact in a muddy soil, ( so no follow through) and it didn’t affect the shot. Since this day I’m focused on the ball contact hammering it and stopping fast and the follow through doesn’t matter anymore.
This is the same sensation as hitting an impact bag right😊. The feeling I get with the bag is that my swing literally stops at impact - I’m trying to make the smack as hard/loud as possible
This is a personal feeling to you, a teaching pro. I don’t think high handicaps who already probably chunk or thin the ball enough will benefit from throwing everything they have at the ball. Ball speed comes from quick hands I agree but the people you’re referring to are the literally the best in the world
2 thoughts. Put a golf ball on the hood of your car. Go 90 mph. Or 120 kph. Stop. The ball will continue At The Speed You Were Going. Also the split hand stop drill is a popular speed drill. Last week I was doing that and the shaft broke in my right palm. Goodbye B21 Callaway. All that said I agree that slowing the hands is necessary
If you stop you will cast the club it is simple physics, try it at home, swing and stop, see how your body gets push back, in golf you are done if you do this, because the body will push back and your arms will go, not good. Just a thought, also I taken lessons with a touring pro, and no one does any stoping no one, . Not even matzuyama, if you look he is always moving he is has not stop, also you can not create speed from an ecstatic position, is very simple.
Yeah, if your golf club shaft was out of one of those orange ball trainers you would be correct. However, the shafts in real clubs don't flex that much and you will have almost zero chance of timing what little flex you would get.
Thanks for this Steve, It added a significant amount of distance to my driver.

I'll give this a whirl next time I'm at the driving range, thanks Steve, awesome video!

Glad it made sense 🙏🏻👍
I experienced this myself a few yrs ago amd it is most important feel in the golf swing bar none.
Fantastic once you understand it👍

Yes,I try to stop the arms at 4 and let the wrists take the club to 8 and then follow thru, same I think.

That’s the one 🎣
Another likely analogy IMO is the 'swing' of javelin, discus, shot put, hammer throw.

gloves look amazing!!!!
They are! 👍🙋♂️🙏🏻
Thanks Steve
You’re welcome👍👍
Centrifugal force.
This is the hit impulse
Just watched James Wiltshires latest lesson, this is exactly what he is being taught.

Proof ? numbers numbers numbers = GC quad, trackman etc what is the difference ?

This is a drill for stopping the swing abruptly. Not throwing everything you have at the ball. It's a feeling at the bottom?...
@@paulcarrigan691 how do you get speed if you don’t swing hard from p4 and stop at impact?
Your getting as technical as Bryson now Steve.....😅😅 makes sense same theory as cracking a whip....
I don’t think I understand the mechanism going on here but the results seems undeniable
He explained the mechanism
🙋♂️
So what extra distance are you getting ??

I just want consistent distance
My ball pops up everytime, when I do this.
Imagine hitting a sledgehammer into the base of a wall - you will stop as you know there won’t be a follow through
