    I've never fixed anything on a car by myself before. I always feel so helpless and afraid to go to a mechanic. But thanks to you, I replaced the switch all by myself! Thank you so much for saving me money and boosting my car-fixing confidence :) I didn't have to remove the metal battery bracket either, my lady arms fit around it with only a few scratches lol. Now I just have to replace my upstream oxygen sensor and I'll be in good shape!

    Thank you for taking the time to record your work! My D light started to blink in the last year but didn't seem to affect shifting nor did it set off check engine light. However, I've already ordered the sensor and will be replacing it this weekend!

    • @ricardocarrasco4629
      @ricardocarrasco4629 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Larson did you replace it? Did it fix the check engine light ?

    • @bamboosaint
      @bamboosaint 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ricardocarrasco4629 I replaced the pressure switch with the part from the video by clicking the link below about 1 week ago. Afterwards, I did a 3 quart transmission fluid change w/ Honda ATF and so far the light has stopped blinking. I've probably driven about 150 miles. Seems to have worked! I went thru the driver side wheel well, without taking off tire- just turned it to the left, removed the 2 fasteners and splash guard. It took 20 minutes.

    Glad I found this I was about ready to take my Element to the dealer and see how much they would going to work me for to fix this ... I am sure there are a few good dealers but when the manager makes a bonus for sales its Neve tin the customers best interest.

    The lower bolts of the battery bracket only need to be loosened and not removed entirely. Once loosened the bracket can be lifted up and out.

    Great Video. I obtained the part from amazon as well and replaced it from underneath by partially removing the splash shield. It's easy to access this way. The only drawback is the risk of breaking and needing to replace some of those plastic clips holding the splash guard on.

    • @taylorhunley3650
      @taylorhunley3650 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also replaced mine underneath. Found it way easier than taking out the battery and battery holder. Also my splashguard was already gone.

    My 2003 CRV just started to have the Drive light "D" blinking when I put it in park... the car is parked but the D light blinks. I think it is the same issue as yours and just want to say thank you for sharing the video on TH-cam. I am going to get that switch replaced :)!

    Thank you, I was able to access the switch behind the driver front wheel and plastic cover just like Frieder Hafele below. after 5000k the blinking light has not come back. Before I found this video I changed the transmission fluid which needed to be done but did not fix the problem.

  • @friederhafele2803
    @friederhafele2803 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    A much easier and faster way to get access to this pressure switch is:
    1. Jack the car up and remove the front left wheel.
    2. Detach the plastic cover, which is covers parts of the wheel well and the front bottom of the car just partly.
    3. Bend this plastic cover carefully down to access the pressure switch from the wheel well, which is just behind.

    • @Rupterr
      @Rupterr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thanks for posting. Just wanted to add that I did not have to jack up my vehicle and remove tire. I turned wheel all the way to the left and there was easy access to remove the plastic cover and get to the pressure switch.

    • @sw201444
      @sw201444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for this. So much easier to pull the shield and go through the fender. Don’t have to remove wheel. Just turn it left and you can get it.

      My original plan was to follow this video and go down from the top. The five bolts holding the battery tray on my Honda were a bit rusty. The top three were easy to remove but the bottom two turned into a big pain. I changed my mind and decided to remove the splash shield and go up from below. I busted a bunch of the push-pin clips as they were very brittle after being exposed to the elements for 17 years. I was able to find those clips very inexpensively here on Amazon. I also opted for a Honda OEM pressure switch instead of the aftermarket one mentioned in this video. Here are the links:

    Hey I went to AutoZone to get the part and the part I took off my car looks like the part you have, but both of theirs had two things in the middle and the lady ended up finding me the piece I needed, but it wasn't under the name third clutch transmission Oil pressure switch. It was just called the Oil pressure switch, but it looks just like it. Do you think I bought the wrong part? It has a lifetime warranty so I can take it back. I have a 2002 Honda CR-V

  • @albertkelly8515
    @albertkelly8515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No need to remove the battery because you can easily access the switch from under the car by removing the plastic shroud under the front bumper. I started to do what you did by removing the battery and what a big waste of time not to mention the headache of having to reset the radio. So for anyone watching this video please don’t go this route and access from the bottom. You’ll not only save you knuckles but also tons of time.

    I don't know if you mentioned it in the video but those two lower bolts on the battery holder don't need to be taken all the way out. I learned that after losing some skin off my arms. They just need to be loosened and the metal bracket can slide right up.

  • @elmecanico4943
    @elmecanico4943 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the video. The worse thing one can do when doing this job is cross threading the hole where the sensor goes. I have seen people doing that because they overtightened to the point of damaging threads. There should be a torque spec for that vehicle.

    Hello...great great videos...Thank you! This is probably an obvious question, but I noticed in my 2004 Element that there's a so-called "flare" (slipping) between 2nd & 3rd gear (going into 3rd gear)...would I be looking at replacing the 3rd gear pressure switch or the 2nd gear switch? I'm assuming I need the switch for the gear that is being shifted into, in my case, 3rd gear...but doesn't hurt to double-check. Thanks!

    • @frugalberry
      @frugalberry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry J. I'm not the one to help you. I'm just a back yard mechanic who happened to find that there were no clear videos on how to fix this problem at the time that I posted this (I needed to fix my own car and thought I would share my experience). I'm guessing that the 3rd clutch switch does not necessarily affect 3rd gear. You may be barking up the tree sideways in getting your terms mixed up. Just guessing.

    Good video and well explained. I too have seen a couple of other videos on youtube and yes they changed the 2nd pressure switch which is why the old one had a green colar but they said not to worry.
    One question though. I have this same problem on my CRV. Would this affect the gear change and mood of the engine? I also noticed that I don't see or feel any difference when I I press the O/D OFF switch. Is this also due to the third pressure switch?

    • @frugalberry
      @frugalberry  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Paulo Caetano Yes, it will change how / when the transmission shifts, but it probably won't be noticed all that much. Don't know about the O/D issue.

    • @DarynHughes
      @DarynHughes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I have a 2003 CRV (with the blinking drive light, which I am now going to have a go at) and I can tell you that the O/D sets the gears to change at lower rev limit. When you toggle the O/D it will allow a higher rev to be reached before the gear change. I rarely use this, but have done a few times when I needed more 'oomph' when overtaking.

      The Frugal Berry thank you for the tutorial, can I assume the flashing D light will be the 3rd clutch pressure sensor fail? I have the same year car and I don't have the diagnosis tools. Cheers.

      Transmission fluid may leak from the sensor if you don't use a washer

    Many thanks for your video. Today I repaired my Honda CRV 2004 D flashing issue. The new part from Honda dealer is 28610-RKE-004 (3rd Pressure Switch sensor), but wired for me is that no code inside, car D light will be flashing after some driving. I feel not very smooth, anyway I replaced it. After 50KM test driving, no that issue. It is not too easy remove battery bracket due to two screws below it.

      So did it really work for you? I have the same 2004 crv, flashing D, and NO code so im not sure what to do.

    • @frugalberry
      @frugalberry  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it really works. Not sure why you don't have the code yet, but it will show up eventually, I'm sure.

      This is the way it starts. It will likely come back again and get worse over the next few months if you don't replace the 3rd clutch pressure switch.

    Don't buy this cheap and junk part as it'll break sooner or later. I bought one and the plastic connector broke from the metal part a year later causing the flashing D problem. A Honda OEM part costs roughly $60 (28610-RKE-004).

    Much easier to do from underneath th-cam.com/video/CCFLMCGCILY/w-d-xo.html
    And I'm pretty sure it could also be done from the top without removing the battery & tray.

    D Light continues to flash even after replacing part. Should I flush transmission fluid as well?

    • @frugalberry
      @frugalberry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt a fluid flush will help things. Did you do an error code reset on the computer? If so, I would try it again. Otherwise, no suggestions. Sorry.
