  • Situated just east of the Mersey Estuary in the county of Merseyside is the city of Liverpool.
Founded in 1207, it spent several centuries as a small port town whilst the nearby roman city of Chester had been the northwest region's principal port on the Irish Sea. As the River Dee began to silt up, maritime trade shifted away from Chester and towards Liverpool.
The 19th century saw a surge of growth with the introduction of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, allowing it to thrive as a trade city as well as a key port for transatlantic travel. The impressive early 20th century architecture seen around Pier Head (after the 8 minute mark) demonstrates the prestige associated with the port of Liverpool in pre-aviation years.
Liverpool is of course the birthplace of The Beatles, with references abound all around the city. Just after the 19 minute mark we take a walk through the Cavern Quarter, named in reference to the Cavern Club where the Beatles famously performed from as early as 1961 shortly after returning from Hamburg. Other Liverpudlian musicians besides The Beatles are referenced in various forms, including Cilla Black, Billy Fury, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Echo & the Bunnymen to name a few.
The name comes from old English "lifer", meaning thick/muddy water and "pōl", meaning pool/creek. People from Liverpool are typically referred to as "scousers". This is derived from the name of a stew (lobscouse) commonly eaten by sailors in the area.

OMG how empty and wide desolate place by the river and Pier Head. Nothing there to bring people in other than a museum! Needs some attraction to have a reason for people to go there regularly. It's just empty concrete and steps a d iron, yet again City Planning gone wrong! This contrasts with the City Centre and the liveliness and bustle of people. Liverpool has some beautiful architecture the Town Hall, St George's Hall even Lime Street station and what was the hotel, the Musium and City Library as well as some fantastic beautiful pub that the city offers but still one of the better videos I've seen. Would be nice to see a night video and the night life there...the crack! Show the bars, resturants or clubs scene also around Duke street etc. Maybe another video?

Well to be fair, it's hard to make an estuary look that pretty. I mean, look at Grimsby for one thing (I'm from near there so I can say that! ;) ). But yeah, an evening walk would be interesting. Mind you, I spent one night in Liverpool where a guy in the Cavern Quarter casually offered me some coke. And I don't mean the drink!
