This is truly a pickup truck for non-truck people. I bought a Tacoma and wasn't prepared for how truck-like the drive and handling was and just couldn't live with it. I traded it in after six months to get one of these and couldn't be happier.

I would do the same. I am hoping Toyota upgrades the Tacoma as well as it has the Tundra. I am guessing the next-gen Tacoma, Ranger, and Colorado will be very nice.

I was looking for one of these 2 trucks (Santa Cruz or maverick). I was not willing to pay more than the manufacturer says it was worth. So on Saturday, July 23rd 2022, we pulled into the local Hyundai dealership, and they had a Santa Cruz just parked there in the lot, right beside a 2023 elantra. They just got them in on Thursday. We bought them both with no dealer markup.

As a mid sized truck owner I love both of these little guys. I think Hyundai dropped the ball on not offering a hybrid but I think Ford dropped the ball on offering a hybrid without AWD. To me, not offering AWD in the hybrid is egregious and horrendous as no truck should be on the road without an AWD system in probably 70% of US states. Santa Cruz is a clear winner in my book.

Plenty of pickup trucks are sold with rear wheel drive only. Front wheel drive would be better than that in snowy environments.
Although I imagine if you're towing something near the max limit rear wheel or AWD drive might be preferred. But none of these trucks really have a huge tow rating that I think it would be a problem. It is odd that Ford did not offer all-wheel drive. It's available in the Ford escape Hybrid which has essentially the same powertrain. Definitely kind of weird.
I definitely prefer the Santa Cruz in most ways.
But that 40 MPG in the Ford hybrid would be pretty difficult to overlook.
In the Hyundai I don't understand why they continue to not have wireless carplay in the higher trim stereo.. This is been the case for a couple of years now at least and I thought for sure they would have fixed this glaring problem before now.
The 10-year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty certainly is a plus on the Hyundai side.

The Maverick is FWD, with snow tires it would be more than fine. And I think they didn't offer AWD w/ hybrid because they couldn't fit/package both the hybrid system and AWD system in the same vehicle.

I was cross Shopping the new 2023 CX50 Turbo Premium Plus, the 2022 Passport Trailsport HPD, and the 2022 Santa Cruz Limited. After finally getting to drive the CX50, I was surprisingly disappointed by lack of power from a stop, the somewhat high interior noise, and feeling that new offering needs at least one update to get everything just right. I feel like the CX50 with some focus on sound deadening and upgrading the transmission to at least a 7 speed (with lower first two gears) would really make that SUV perfect for the price.
The 2022 Passsport Trailsport HPD is amazing and by far has the better AWD system for offroad use....but it is a bit too utilitarian looking for me. I decided to go with the 2022 Santa Cruz Limited AWD for the overall styling...LOVE IT! I also absolutely LOVE the interior styling and the center stack and drivers instrument cluster design...SHARP! The Santa Cruz is loaded with Tech and many great features for about $41k total....heck of a great deal! Last item, I applaud Hyundai and their 3 year//36,000 Hyundai Complimentary Maintenance program which was icing on the cake for my purchase decision!

I've had the same load-leveling dampers in a 98 Grand Caravan of all things, and it's a terrific system.
I really like the looks of the Tucson and the Santa Cruz, but also the Santa Fe. I'd have to drive them to decide. A Ford is just not an option for me.

Having seen both the Maverick and Santa Cruz in person (I own the Santa Cruz) - these aren't as small as people often think - they are bigger than say the old Ranger or an S10 or even a previous generation Colorado - in fact when you watch some reviews where people are some what small in stature they appear to be pretty large. The average 1/2 ton pickup has grown in size over the past 15-20 years and a modern one looks almost cartoon like compared to trucks of a couple decades ago.
I think that if auto makers really went back to the small (mini in the US) truck size they likely wouldn't sell and may not meet modern safety standards.

I am really liking my new Santa Cruz SEL Premium with the Turbo and AWD.. This might attract people who have never had a pickup before but that is not me. I have always had one but also often had something smaller and quicker for having fun in. That is no longer necessary with the Santa Cruz as it does it all. People are stopping me at gas stations asking me what kind of car it is and really liking it. I can be a little irritated at some of the tech such as it letting you back right into a light pole or anything that is not moving without even a single beep, or the non passenger seat height adjustment, or the questionable lane control systems, no place for sunglasses, and no memory seat buttons on the 2nd highest trim at least. However this thing is really great to drive. Quick and so maneuverable in traffic, but also comfortable and quiet. When you want to pass something it feels really powerful. I beleive it would have a better 0-60 time if it were quicker from a dead stop. Sport mode actually makes a big difference when you want it and it also has awd and great ground clearance. Looking forward to seeing how it does in the snow. After 2 months I am really happy with the purchase.

Good ones (high mileage is likely but not a problem) cost less than any of the three options, I can upgrade the electronics if I feel like it, maintenance is reasonable, and MPG is as good as the Santa Cruz. I've carried 4X8 sheet goods in ours, half a pallet of paving stones, 20 bales of hay (some on top), and pretty much everything else I've wanted. When it gets muddy, dirty, or full of straw, we just hose it out when necessary, and sweep it out when that would do.
Modern auto-makers don't understand the concept of practical. Pickup trucks are just fancy cars with a third of the roof missing (I fantasize about forcing most of the over-compensating pickup drivers to take a front-end loader of gravel in the bed of their truck followed by a ton of manure). It would make alot of truck owners look twice, most people don't use their 6ft beds to max capacity anyways, no one likes getting 15-25 MPG when gas is getting so expensive. Even tho its a Hyundai and only comes with a 4ft bed I shockingly really like it.

Was looking forward to the 2 door concept for production even though I knew it would not be made, but this looks good. Disappointed in all the pastel colors for exterior. Give us a real blue and a real green. Also not a fan of the 2 spoke steering wheel, it needs a 3 spoke. I wish Hyundai would have done something to dress up the interior to fit the style of the truck, maybe some contrasting colors? But overall I’m glad this truck/suv exists.

Regardless, I am glad to see unibody trucks catching on. Plus the haters seem to not be dissing a 5k tow rating now that it has a Ford logo. Funny that we Ridgeline faithful were right, the truck bros just hated the Honda on the front, not the idea or capability. As I have pointed out alot, many people are just fine with old rangers and s10s, which had about 4000 and 5000 lb max tow ratings respectively as well.

I think hyundai likely have overpriced this vehicle for what it is at least in Canada. The santa fe/tucson phev is only few thousands more. They've banked on the fact that suv buyers who want a bed with towing capacity would pay similar amount of money for a vehicle with less features/luxury amenities/passenger comfort. If santa cruz was about 6-8k less than current this would do well, however at its current price I don't know. I test drove the santa cruz and I think it's a good vehicle but I'd pick the santa fe/tucson over this as the advantages it has over them - bed & higher towing capacity- is not enough for me. It's a niche product and for some it will do well but for the majority people will pass on this.

The warranty on the Santa Cruz would easily have me getting it over the Ford Maverick. Also Ford never does a good job on first year models as far as quality goes. I think you might be overestimating the hybrid in the Maverick as most truck/SUV buyers want awd and not fwd. I could be wrong but especially up here in the snow belt states, awd is a must on most shoppers list. I will say the all black/dark grey interior on the Santa Cruz is disappointing and a bit dreary. I specifically didn’t want that bed cover and the loss of bed space, a hard trifold I can remove easily when needed is another $1k. I'm a "Ford Guy" and reserved both but bought the Santa Cruz - several reasons but I was looking at each a bit differently - in the Maverick I was going to buy the XL with no options - it was going to be my "go to the warehouse / home depot / car for the kids to drive" - with the Santa Cruz that was (and is) my primary car to drive similar to what I would have bought in a Ford Edge or mid size (two row) crossover - it fits in the garage and gets decent MPG. They really are two very different vehicles although they are in the same class. I actually can see that Hyundai like Subaru discontinues them after a few years like the Baja. Ford will make them for many, many years although they'll be careful about not eating into Ranger sales so no Maverick Raptor or even Tremor editions - the prices will creep up too - just with a lot of new vehicles - if you don't buy the first year the prices won't be as low in the second year.

You should probably be talking more about the Hyundai here as this IS supposedly a Santa Cruz review. Personally, I'd be curious to see if any other manufacturers decide to get involved in the future as neither of the vehicles discussed here is quite right for MY needs, and both Ford and Hyundai seem to lack in quality and reliability overall. It's true about the price vs. the Maverick _except_ for when you add in factory options on top of what you choose for a trim level and any possible dealer mark ups - The Limited trim there wasn't (at the time I ordered) any factory options at all - I would have liked to have added the hitch but no dice - compared to the Ford where they've been doing select a trim and then add on option packages forever now base price and trim levels seem a bit misleading. When I purchased my Santa Cruz I reserved it online and didn't pay a penny over MSRP (in fact I was able to get a good discount, again for the time we're in). I am pulling for the Maverick as I've been a "Ford guy" for about 30 years now and I think they will be a good little truck - I did have concerns around actually taking delivery (I reserved one too and almost instantly the dealer started playing games) - Ford said they wouldn't be building any initially for "inventory" so you would get the "Bronco Effect", what the end price was going to be (I've heard some really bad stories especially for XL trim ones), and honestly I have some quality concerns as well. I felt better about a first year model in the Hyundai compared to a Ford. Styling is where people will largely be divided. If you're looking for a small truck then you'll go Maverick - if you're looking for a small SUV with a bed then the Santa Cruz. We will see longer term - I only have 1800 miles on my Santa Cruz - thus far I love it - and it fits in the garage - something I couldn't do (easily) with my 2018 F-150 XLT Sport 4x4...
