Hey Joshua, the front connector must be installed to the other way. That 's why you could'nt close the shell and the tip is not contacting perfectly! Please check it again. Nice video keep doing the good job!
@ Georg Roukounakis,Yep i noticed that too and was going to add a comment saying so too,but as you and a couple of other people spotted it and made a comment saying so i won't bother. ;-)
"How hard could it be..." (3x wardrobe changes later) Famous last words in the hobbyists world. I now have a wonderfully large craptastic collection of one-off drivers, USB program adapters and other such nonsense from all my encounters with "how hard it could be" Cheers JB, and keep up the great work!
So frustrating to see that @Joshua Bardwell puts the front connector the wrong way around (see 12:14) , and then pleasantly surprised when the manufacturer thought about that, when designing the upper case so it did not close that way (at least without force). There is clearly a lip that is supposed to sit in the pilot hole, and the solder mask alignment would also give a hint. Happy Holiday!
Cheers Joshua just completed the firmware update, bit late to the Ts100 and I'm new to the FPV hobby your guides have helped me so much when it comes to understanding this hobby. Thank you
I took the back off my unit for............ kinda no reason. Seeing your push that metal tab back to get the back piece back on helped sooo much I would have never thought of that.
One of the best videos I've seen! LOL Seems like you ate your words. LOL Thanks for the entertainment and info. I got one of these little soldering irons today at a thrift store for $6!!! Works perfect! I've been wanting one for a while but couldn't convince myself to let go of $60 or so. Glad I went to that store today!! Well worth the trip! One of the owners knows me and brought it to me and said, hey can you use this? My eyes got real wide and I said YES I SURE CAN! He said here you go. probably the best find in a long time. I brought it home and hooked it up and tested it out and it works great. I'll check out the firmware. Thanks again.
VERY useful video, loving the updated firmware, I might make my own GitHub fork of it. BUT some of the links are now expired and case color choices are now limited or discontinued right now (2022)
While watching this I realised that I hadn't changed the firmware on either of my TS100's for ages, So I just upgraded them. While doing this it dawned on me what a weird world we live in these days. 20 Years back if someone told me that they would be adding features and increasing the maximum temperature on their soldering iron by plugging it into a computer I'd be checking the way to the door was clear in case this obvious idiot suddenly turned violent, But now (In certain circles) It's a perfectly normal thing to do. ...... Strange. :)
Ts100 is great. I have had mine since they came out and had the 450c firmware as soon as it came out on github. Your ts100 will catch fire/melt if you don't reverse that last clip @ 12:12, The barb pointing down goes in the hole.
I subscribe to two mottos in life. The first is "KISS". The other is " There is no price for Sanity". Anyone that likes to tinker with things in life and doesn't own an IFIXIT toolkit. Well, they get what's coming to them :)
Josh, I don't own one of these irons, so I'm not sure about the following suggestion, but after enjoying your vid, it occurred to me that you may be able to make the installation easier and the end result more distinctive by only replacing the back (easy) half of the case. You wouldn’t have had to disassemble the iron all the way, and you’d end up with a more distinctive, two-tone case (you wouldn’t have had to buy the additional T3 driver - less grief). Just a suggestion.
Really nice job, JB! 😊 But I was thinking... What about hydro dipping the original case? Could be a great idea, because then it would be really difficult for anyone to have an identical one. 😉
Yes it appears to be backwards. It also moves the contact off center on the contact band of the tip. This can be seen by comparing the image from the beginning of the video 3:43 and end 12:51. Now more stages of grief and denial as Joshua decides whether or not to fix it. Joshua, please let us know your decision. 😂 Thanks for the video, I think I will do the firmware update. Colored phase tape on the original case seems simpler for ID purposes.
never seen you like that before, that project seemed to sucked the wind out of you but it happens. You still prevailed and thats the inpotant thing. thanks for all that you do for the community.
I laughed way more than it is socially acceptable 😂The 7 stages of grief could very well be the funniest part of a TH-cam video I've seen in a while. Came for the TS100, totally stayed for the humor
Thanks for making this vid. I do have to point out that the clamp or whatever the two pieces are called that holds the soldering tip in place, you place the second one backwards. One side has a little prong that goes in the tiny hole. You placed it facing the wrong direction. Don't know it it will matter in the long run but I did notice that.
Michelle just got me one for Christmas and I put the custom firmware on it. Next time I see you I will show you a 3d printed case I remixed for it. perfect fit in the small lopro pouch.
just change my case for my TS100 in 2020. You no longer need a T3 or T4 bit only a small phillips head driver. I used my tiny whoop driver . Not sure the size but often found in glasses repair kits. you still need your hex driver for the outside of the case though.
Thanks for being so humble about losing the battle to the bit driver set. I personally hate those as well, but I still have like 3 sets I use along side my individual drivers.
I actually bought that same driver kit in green when I bought my TS100 last week. It has every security bit I could think of in there, so theres a plus at least.
I bought a TS100 through the RotorRiot store after watching LeDrib's review. I laughed watching your video above dealing with the nuisances of the TS100's case while reassembling it, as I had to figure out how to get the case to snap back down (that dang brass metal tab under there..used a mini-screwdriver to push it forward just enough..) I happened to stumble upon the TH-cam video by Ralim the other day, and did the firmware hex edit mod. Now you need to do the Custom BootLogo mod! It's not that hard, as the TS100 LogoEditor executable is also on the GitHub link for the firmware. I used Microsoft Paint to create my logo, and saved it as a monochrome bitmap. Then using the Logo Editor software, and a few tweaks to get the logo to fill the screen, success. It looks great and really personalizes your TS100. kh2pm.dynip.com/TS100-KH2PM.jpg Link to the custom firmware and the Boot Logo executable for those of you that are curious: github.com/Ralim/ts100/releases
it happend so many times to me that at one point i tought i was stupid ! lol , don`t feel embarrased josh , it only happend to people that try , not to people that never try anything !!
I feel your pain JB.... took me two attempts to complete the case swap on my TS100 after realizing how many different drivers I needed. Also, for some reason, where yours has the t3 torx screws inside securing the tip holders, mine were in place with phillips head screws instead. What a project for a shiny little piece of plastic. My next step is the firmware update.... hoping it is that easy on a mac. :)
I ended up getting a multi bit screwdriver from MicroCenter to do the swap as my multi bit set was apparently on the slower boat than the case. Thanks for the heads up on the firmware, can’t recall if I updated the firmware to the newest version but I did swap to the orange shell right off the bat months ago.
The amount of content you put out is amazing, all the great information you share for the people in this hobby is much appreciated. I would love to see you review more brushless whoops, hopefully you can do a review on the eachine trashcan. Thanks again keep up the great work.
And THAT is why I shop at Ifixit. Because you don't normally need a kit with a bazillion tips that you have to keep changing tips out on.... BUT WHEN YOU DO....... Damn, you feel smart!
lol, this is why the bits are good to have. They have numbered increments and metric. If you are in a pinch, the best solution is to use a slotted. Often times they don't hold up when they are so small. Torx can remove phillips but not vise versa. Invest in a screw assortment and change those little turds out.
I loved mine for about 45 minutes before the screen decided to go out and I bought four tips for it that's pretty much useless now. I'm too scared to buy another one because then I'm just throwing money away at that point. So I wish they would have made them a little bit better. At least make them work for a couple weeks . I was hoping it would.
The problem is the rear connector is backwards and also make sure once board is laying flat in case push the ring terminal that power plug goes into all the way back b4 tightening screw. Hope this makes sense. There should be really no gap between the plastic case and the ring terminal. That is what is hanging up when shutting.
I suggest in your next video you should do a review of one of those kits that has multiple bits. You could explain the downsides of having to swap out the bits for each size of screw but sing praises of not having to wait for Amazon Prime to deliver a #3 Torx.
Awesome video. I just purchased a $20 solder kit from Amazon which seems to be working well but plan on getting the TS100/TS80 once I recover from the holiday spending lol
Joshua, as a former mechanic on various objects I don't question myself on tools to work on various objects, I immediately think that the engineer who specked the fasteners should be either horse whipped, and or shot. With a new iron I allowed myself as a longed for nifty alternative to an already operational soldering iron (or five), they had the foresight to include an appropriate sized hex wrench to install the tip which ships unattached for size requirements. The fact that they don't include a micro sized torques wrench makes the company a group of bumbling idiots. Taint you my friend, it's the manufacturer. They could spec a fastener that uses the same friggen size driver in all locations to make everyone's life easier. I frequently use very descriptive language referring to their familiarity with their product and the inevitable need to service or repair said objects. Glad you showed everyone that it does happen and the required work around to solve. Great video!
You are awesome. What a great video. I do not own a t3 or t4 and i will now include those as a part of the purchase. And i will get a stiff drink when i start.
I got a TS100 this week, and decided to flash it today. I plugged it in with no hubs or anything. File wouldn't transfer properly at all. I didn't even get an extension changed file that said it failed; it just disconnected and got real weird every time I tried. Wouldn't boot anymore. Tried flashing the latest OFW instead. That did the same thing. I got real scared, and plugged it into my tablet to try on that device. Worked first time I tried on there, *.RDY and all. My desktop is a Ryzen system with a B350 board, but idk if that's where the issue was cropping up from. I guess, for anyone who has issues flashing, just try flashing it from a different device. It worked for me, at least. Oddly enough, though, I edited up and flashed my business logo onto it with my desktop, and didn't have any issues. Maybe flashing functional firmware fixed it? Or maybe the issue is firmware-specific, and doesn't include logo flashing. I seriously thought I'd broke the thing on Day 2, I guess that goes to show how much of a tinker nut I am, both hardware and software-wise. Definitely better than my college's iron, which was the older slug-tip design. And infinitely better than my first two irons, cheap $20 from-the-wall pencils with no tempurature control. Even on OFW it's super nice, though the interface is a little clunkier on OFW than it is on the Ralim CFW. Also can't recommend the TS-KU tip enough. decent for drag soldering, able to transfer heat better than conical and the tip can be used in a conical tip-like fashion if need be. The TS-K is probably better for thermal mass, though, if the listed specs are right. But I got the TS-KU so that's what I'm recommending.
Does it have an led on it? Ive been using a cheep orange 700degree Weller that has leds on it and it's just awsome. Cleen the tip and go. Tips last long time. I've had it for years. For 18 bucks it just works.
Very entertaining video. Painless 360 also recommended this iron some time ago which is why I bought one. I find it the most irritating iron I've ever had. Every time I put it down to prepare something (or just to sneeze) it switches itself off. so many times I try to apply the iron to the work, only to find it's cold again. Is it just mine or doe's everyone but me like switching it on continuously? My thumb's up was for the video, not for the iron.
Any reason instead of RDY my hex from this exact site goes to ERR? I’ve tried 3 USB cables, 2 different computers and the same result. The first time it bricked my iron but I was able to reclaim the stock firmware on it and am still having the same issue EN.ERR Also why does one computer show no files on my iron from factory but another has -_-Trash file folder on my other? It’s a SQ-001 not a TS-100 but I’ve seen they are the same iron and firmware. Also watched people flash both of these with out issue
@@JoshuaBardwell I just thought it was a funny comment when you didnt have the right tools and mounted it wrong, we all make mistakes..atleast i do. I didnt mean to be rude dude.
Updated my TS100 with the new firmware last night. Fluctuates sporadically (roughly) between 419° & 421°. Also, that's the highest it will go, with being set at 450°. Any opinions on this?
literally I only ever use two screwdrivers. One has a phillips head that i use for pc building, and one is a little point six-sided star that i use for teeny tiny hex screw like on quads! :D
I just got one of these.. seems newer models have small Philips screws for the element connectors opposed to the t3. I searched all over for my t3, only to realize I needed a ph00 Philips.
Haaaaa mate the 7 stages of grief I love it , wow that cracks me up I LOL so hard I cried we all have these moments as hobbyists.. I just had to make a comment... so so funny and unexpected from your videos to make crack up like this ... thank you now I have cramps of laughter.. your a legend!!!
Miniware would have a big seller if they made a TS100 type bench model with shorter handle to tip distance, silicone cable and stand etc. I do electronic service and don't think the TS100 would hold up to the rigors of daily use. And like you said, the ergonomics aren't the best.
Now 'everyone' comment 'I have the orange case', lol. Just dickin' round.. Nice and comical vid Josh.. ;) Edit, (just for fun) Get some coloured 3m vinyl wrap and never open the case. Less hassle and when something better comes out "best condition TS100" lol for sale" lol
hey Joshua you have always been quick to help in past so I figured I would ask you this question. In your experience what stores carry good quality silicone wire like 20 awg I just need some to extend motor wires and Don't wants to wait for amazon I just want to go to a local store and pick some up. any answer would be appreciated thanks!
Hey Josh, I had this idea for a video. I saw that it is possible to use solar power to charge our batteries and since I'm as budget as it can get, do you think you could elaborate on the topic?!
If budget is your concern then solar is not the way to go. Solar cells, battery, charge controller. You'd be better off getting a deep cycle marine battery for a hundred bucks and charging it at home.
I know a few years late, but I have a question that I can't find any answer for. Question: the latest F/W is now 2.19. I download the .zip file and there are many .DFU and .HEX files, each representing their respective languages. I know that the .HEX files are the firmware file(s). What are the .DFU files for?????? I see no mention of them anywhere. Cheers.
Hey Joshua, the front connector must be installed to the other way. That 's why you could'nt close the shell and the tip is not contacting perfectly! Please check it again. Nice video keep doing the good job!
I was about to say the same thing. Glad I'm not the only one who caught that (especially since I'm watching it 3 days later)
@ Georg Roukounakis,Yep i noticed that too and was going to add a comment saying so too,but as you and a couple of other people spotted it and made a comment saying so i won't bother. ;-)
I thought he realized when he checked the connection repeatedly, but continued on.
Came here to say this.

Mate, this just made my day!! Funny af
Son, on just the honesty and humor alone, I had to Sub. Good stuff. Look forward to further adventures.
Hahaha Joshua you’re so funny! 🤣🤣
No frigging T3!!
I’m so glad you didn’t edit all that out, these are real life problems!!
The power plug is probably loose.
Fecking hilarious....... Sooo the story of my life as a hobbyist
I just ordered this with the red shell from team blacksheep. Looking forward to it!
Any reason instead of RDY my hex from this exact site goes to ERR?
I’ve tried 3 USB cables, 2 different computers and the same result. The first time it bricked my iron but I was able to reclaim the stock firmware on it and am still having the same issue EN.ERR
Also why does one computer show no files on my iron from factory but another has -_-Trash file folder on my other?
It’s a SQ-001 not a TS-100 but I’ve seen they are the same iron and firmware. Also watched people flash both of these with out issue
The comment, Im reasonably smart and should figure this out, was wrong..lol
The grief stages was funny.
Happy holliday JB
Well, in the end, I did figure it out.
@@JoshuaBardwell I just thought it was a funny comment when you didnt have the right tools and mounted it wrong, we all make mistakes..atleast i do. I didnt mean to be rude dude.
This is definitely a time to clean/ replace a table mat.
Ha, ha! The iFixit kit does it again! That screwdriver set has saved me many a time!
Loved your scale banding.
That 7 stages thing was actually very interesting! :D
I just got one for Christmas! Perfect timing 😃
Updated my TS100 with the new firmware last night. Fluctuates sporadically (roughly) between 419° & 421°. Also, that's the highest it will go, with being set at 450°. Any opinions on this?
Your power source is insufficient. Whatever you're powering it from can't keep up.
@@JoshuaBardwell I'm using the supplied "24V" psu. What would you recommend?
You can use a micro flathead on small torx screws or even the tip of a knife.
I have never used that holder screw for the tip never had a problem lol
Thanks for all the great videos Joshua! They have really helped me out.
literally I only ever use two screwdrivers. One has a phillips head that i use for pc building, and one is a little point six-sided star that i use for teeny tiny hex screw like on quads! :D
The 2nd connector for the iron was installed backwards there was an indexing tab on the connector that fits into the circuit board.
Invest in a Wowscrew driver with the bits. It's amazing...
Such a great video! The part about stages of grief was amazing. You looked so defeated when you got that last set of drivers 😂
Glad to see you have perfected some human emotions. Great vid mate
I just got one of these.. seems newer models have small Philips screws for the element connectors opposed to the t3. I searched all over for my t3, only to realize I needed a ph00 Philips.
excellent vid Joshua and very entertaining :-))
This video made my day. Thanks Joshua!
That's when the micro flat head screwdriver comes in handy. Lol great video!
when something easy turns into the hardest thing in the world. I know that every well!
Now 'everyone' comment 'I have the orange case', lol.
Just dickin' round.. Nice and comical vid Josh.. ;)
Edit, (just for fun) Get some coloured 3m vinyl wrap and never open the case. Less hassle and when something better comes out "best condition TS100" lol for sale" lol
I learned something today... Your humor is awesome... Had me laughing out loud when you reveiled the bit set and driver to the camera
Joshua... Just love your style..... You drama queen.....
What it really needs is a pistol grip attachment that doubles as a stand and/or battery holder to make it wireless.
hey Joshua you have always been quick to help in past so I figured I would ask you this question. In your experience what stores carry good quality silicone wire like 20 awg I just need some to extend motor wires and Don't wants to wait for amazon I just want to go to a local store and pick some up. any answer would be appreciated thanks!
No clue. It's a fairly specialty item. Definitely won't be at your local hardware store.
Cheers.
