Garage Door Opener Install - Low Ceiling DIY HACK

- I installed a craftsman garage door opener ( model CMX ) in a garage with a very low ceiling by making a extension using long metal brackets and hanging the garage door opener as far back as possible so it wouldn't be in the way. I also installed the garage door opener slightly off center so the extension wouldn't make contact with rail or chain. I haven't seen anyone else try this. Let me know what you think!

Well this is just a perfect example of what not to do. The top section of this door will be cracked in half within a month. The chain is so tight on the motor that you will destroy the sprocket in no time. This is just terrible all around, this is exactly the kind of thing that keeps the professionals busy. For anyone watching Do Not hang your motor like this.
This is coming from someone with 22 years in the industry, having installed approximately 10,000 openers during that time.
As a door guy, I'm curious how long did this last before the top section of your garage door cracked and caved in? 1 week? Maybe 2.. I could write everything that was done wrong, but I'd need about 2 hours.
This video made this Christmas one of the best for my daughter. She has a older detached garage and without this idea I never would have been able to get a door opener installed. I used the same model, that was on sale at Lowes, and it worked out great. Had to move a few electric boxes and things around to gain more clearance but this video was priceless. Thank you.
Hey I tried this today but I guess the springs that keeps my garage door open is too strong so it bent those angle slots. Just wondering which angle slots did you buy? Maybe I need stronger ones.
This is a hack job alright. Just spend the money and hire a pro so you dont destroy your door.
This is really cleaver! I am still hoping I can do a wall mounted opener for my low ceiling garage, but if I cant, I will probably end up same as yours
If there's not like 8 in over the torsion bar it wont match up with the sprocket

Holy smokes, you can see the flex of the top section and the strain your hack is causing. Please stop advertising these "solutions."
LMAO do NOT do this. You'll destroy the top section of your door after a month or two. Hire a door guy for the love of Christ before you do anything like this

Could you please link the angle slot bars that you bought? I tried this and the ones I bought bend on it's way down. I think it's pushing against the garage door springs that keeps it in the open position and the metal is not strong enough. It did close it but at the cost of bending.
My God fathers please don't do this for anyone else.
Where did you get the L brackets for the motor to hang? I have the exact same issue. Piece of wood was already placed from the previous opener

I hope I can find someone to do mine gives me hope I hate my open garage if mine goes well I know my neighbor across the street the street that has a low clearance as well will get a door he’s had a guy in his garage at 4 am looking around and I have lawn equipment in mine as well as two cars I hope I can find someone to do it
