Looking for Hysterectomy recovery stories, I found this podcast. I am 6 days post-op after surgery performed by Dr. Schmit and recovering well so far. Thank you, Dr. Schmit.
These videos have been great prep to watch before my surgery, thank you! I am two days post op, off the meds, and walking two laps down the hallway of my condo building every two hours. I am feeling really good except for the giant gas bubble that seems to be rolling around my abdomen causing more pain than anything in my pelvic area at this point! 🎈
It's been 30 days since my hysterectomy. Today I was walking up and down my driveway about 30 feet one way, i did this for about 15 minutes. It kicked my butt, i ended up taking a 3 hour nap afterwards. 😮 will i ever not be tired
Glad to see you are feeling better! The fatigue can be big for some. Usually at this point, I would recommend starting to increase activity as long as you are staying within the restrictions. It will help with the fatigue long term. But as always check with your Surgeon.
Thank you so much for doing this series. I'll have my procedure soon. I thought i would've been grossed out by the surgery videos but they were actually helpful. One of the things my doctor mentioned is dissecting the fibroid because it was too large to be removed vaginally. Not sure if you've touched on that in other videos. Thanks again 🙏🏽.
Thank you! And we are happy it helped. Yes sometimes the uterus or fibroids are so big we need to make it smaller to remove it and keep the surgery minimally invasive. We call this morcellation and it can be done in a number of ways! I will try and touch on it soon in the videos
@@newschoolobgynThere is a video out about a woman getting a morcellation done and it had spread cancerous cells throughout her body and she eventually passed away.
@@mar8888 Yep, this is why we put uterus or fibroids into a bag, so that every single microscopic piece of the specimen is removed 🙂 this way the 1 in 10,000 risk of undetected uterine cancer doesnt spread to the body. Since I have been practicing, we have been doing contained morcellation. Im very happy it is done this way, to avoid this very sad situation. I should make a video on this to help show how its done🙃
Had my hysterectomy four days ago. Everything was good. No bowel prep, had clear liquids, and went home the same day. They gave me a pain block. I kept ovaries. I was fine until day three with constipation. So then I took laxatives and that was horrible. Had diarrhea the rest of the day. Slept and tonight I went for a walk. I’m tired but feeling fine otherwise. I did have some terrible back pain. Hoping everyday is a little better. I really hate opioids so went off those after two days. Everything went pretty well otherwise!
Love your videos. Ill have my hysterectomy in 3 weeks and i havent heard anyone talking about the belly binders. Would you recommend the use of it at any point diring recovery?
Yes it can help some people. With minimally invasive surgery, it’s needed less but may be nice to have on hand for the first few days after surgery. Best for when you are moving!
I think my large fibroids contributed to my chronic GI issues all these years. Now it has been 3 days post-op from having total laparascopic vaginal hysterectomy (kept ovaries) with a slight bladder lift and the gas in the colon area is the most intense part honestly. Every time I eat or drink water, I start spasming with gas. I think my stomach nerves are just irritated from years of chronic issues. Pain is minimal at the scar sites. Can walk and bend without much pain. The binder made the gas pain worse for me so I stopped wearing it for now. GasX and Colace and Miralax all helped me have #2 pretty soon, like day 2. But I also backed off that due to hyper-irritation of colon. Urinating caused some slight spasm at first but not now. #2 is worse with causing spasm for sure. Resting has made the most difference of all although I am getting bored LOL. Thankfully husband is home to be my caregiver. Hoping to have less gas pain as the days go on. Other than that, I feel decent for having my organs removed 😂
Hi, I just had my hysterectomy 5 weeks ago and I feel very fine since day two. I’m actually walking 6 miles per day and feel great. Is it possible that I’m pushing my body too hard and not feeling it?
You would need to talk to your doctor regarding your specific surgery. But if I am talking to my patients about recovery after hysterectomy, yes of course ☺️
I think it can be good for some fibroids and avoid an abdominal surgery. But it has downsides. Maybe higher pain than surgery, higher re-operation rates, not for people who desire pregnancy. I plan to talk more about it in a video soon!
My operation is coming up soon and it seems like there is a wild amount of women writing about cuff tears (I guess that's the suture?). It almost sounds like a common occurrence and an pretty high risk. However, according to my gynecologist it's very rare and they never even heard of the term. It's quite terrifying, especially because these women often say they were not informed of the risk and how common it is. Can you shine some light on this? What % of women actually experience this and can you prevent it?
Luckily, this is extremely rare! Maybe 1%. Sticking to your restrictions, especially no vaginal penetration. But I wouldn’t let this concern you too much!
I think you are referring to the procedure for stress urinary incontinence? I wouldn’t do this unless someone was proven to have urinary incontinence. Hope this helps
Abdominal laprascopic is two different things Abdominal is a large c section cut Laprascopic is keyhole ie small holes Having a cuff means the cervix is removed and stitched up
14 weeks post total abdominal hystorectomy and so over gyns that just reqd textboom and say there is no side effects. Women suffer sometimes a long time If a woman keeps her ovaries great. But you also experience side effects hot flashes dizzyness fatigue mood awings nausea. Nerve damage is always going to happen with a large incision but drs ignore this.. Im suffering severe fatigue and dizzyness as well as dry mouth and nausea and the terrible nerve damage
Im sorry to hear. We definitely need to keep challenging our prior thoughts to take the best care of everyone. There is now good information since recording this to support what you are saying. It’s worth another visit to reevaluate options with your provider!
Thanks for the information! I had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago and my healing process was exactly like you described. Very reassuring!
Also I'm nonbinary so it was nice to hear the neutral language

Sounds like you are doing it perfectly!
Absolutely i did the same and I'm now almost 4 months post op and feeling like I should have at 2 days post op
Gas!! Its been the worst and I wish you talked more about it
Keep moving and get back to a normal diet. It’s definitely a tough part of it. But hopefully better soon!
